I like them because they're in Indiana and Michigan and I travel to those states often. Normally, I use the atm's on the tollway (three at each oasis). (The link, also attached, will direct you to the article with photos you should see.)

From what I remember hearing stories from my father, this hero resided in 60655. I wanted to post it for all the Firefighter and Police bashers to see what these heroes and their families live with day in and day out.

God Bless all of them!

http://www.suntimes.com/news/obituaries/1515034,richard-sheidt-dies-our-lady-angels-040709.article

Our Lady of the Angels firefighter dies.

Captured in famous photo carrying boy's lifeless body out of deadly 1958 school fire

Richard Scheidt, the Chicago firefighter who cradled a lifeless boy in an iconic photograph from the 1958 fire that swept through Our Lady of the Angels School, has died.

"Here was a true hero," said Bill Kugelman, former president of the Chicago firefighters union, who worked on a downtown squad with Mr. Scheidt. "Here was a true servant to the city of Chicago, a guy with heart and a guy who really did his job and lived for the Fire Department."

Firefighter Richard Scheidt carries John Jajkowski out of Our Lady of the Angels School during the 1958 fire that killed 95 people.
(Steve Lasker/Chicago American file photo)

Surrounded by family and friends, Mr. Scheidt died Monday at his home in Oak Lawn, a day after he was released from a monthlong stay at Advocate Christ Medical Center, relatives said.

"He was just a wonderful person, just a generous person," said his wife of 32 years, Frances. "He was always there, helping everybody."

Mr. Scheidt, 81, was a shy man who was never comfortable being the public face of one of the city's worst tragedies, Kugelman said.

Despite his reservations, he understood that the powerful photo, seen around the world, helped strengthen fire codes to make schools and other public buildings safer, Kugelman said.

"Who knows how many kids were saved by the laws changing?" he said.

Kugelman called Mr. Scheidt a "fireman's fireman" whose three older brothers were also firefighters.

"It was in his blood," he said. "That's what he lived for."

On Dec. 1, 1958, fire swept through Our Lady of the Angels School on the West Side, killing 95 people -- 92 children and three nuns.

In the photograph, which appeared in the Chicago American and Life magazine and was shot by Steve Lasker, Mr. Scheidt is seen carrying the body of 10-year-old John Jajkowski Jr. from the school. John was one of more than a dozen dead children Mr. Scheidt carried from the school that day, according to a Web site devoted to the tragedy, olafire.com.

His daughter, Nancy Coughlin, said her father never talked about what he saw at Our Lady of the Angels, or any day he worked as a Chicago firefighter.

"That generation of people, they were really just all heroes," she said. "They just took care of business."

She said her father, who retired from the fire department as a captain, had a great sense of humor and loved to work hard, both on the job and at home.

"He just did what he did," she said. "He had a bunch of kids, dogs, was fixing our bikes. He was just a great dad."

In February, Mr. Scheidt's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren celebrated his 81st birthday with him at his home.

"A lot of people knew him, and everybody loved Dick Scheidt," his daughter Susan Imburgia said. "No one had a cross word to say about him."

Mr. Scheidt's first wife, Nancy, died in 1975 after 26 years of marriage. A son also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, nine children, 28 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Thompson & Kuenster Funeral Home in Oak Lawn. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Gerald Church in Oak Lawn, and internment follows at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-39630509913247557432009-04-08T06:58:00.000-05:002009-04-08T06:58:00.000-05:00a while back someone was talking about 2 brothers ...a while back someone was talking about 2 brothers having an auto shop at 111th and cicero, I never wrote it down......help ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-3275417088582733772009-04-07T16:23:00.000-05:002009-04-07T16:23:00.000-05:002001 Gmc Safari van 97,000 miles 3100.00 Dark gra...2001 Gmc Safari van 97,000 miles 3100.00 Dark gray conversion type, great runner new tires all aroundAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-352105844958286332009-04-07T01:03:00.000-05:002009-04-07T01:03:00.000-05:003;39 see the mighty rowans in west beverly they ar...3;39 see the mighty rowans in west beverly they are into that business,Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-86799419137557765652009-04-06T19:13:00.000-05:002009-04-06T19:13:00.000-05:002005 chrysler 300 $8000, 40000 miles, not exactly ...2005 chrysler 300 $8000, 40000 miles, not exactly a clunker but maybe you're interestedAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-59548044914259461052009-04-06T15:39:00.000-05:002009-04-06T15:39:00.000-05:00I have a teenager looking for a good clunker, anyo...I have a teenager looking for a good clunker, anyone know anyone selling a used car cheap, but in decent running condition?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3637815564696693043.post-44474338755047247132009-04-06T12:44:00.000-05:002009-04-06T12:44:00.000-05:00just got through reading a book by a beverly guy M...just got through reading a book by a beverly guy MIKE HOULIHAN, WHAT a colassol ass, name dropper , look at me, i know this guy , i kicked this guys butt etc etc you get the picture, what he dosent say is how he had the Mccourt bros, of ANGELES ASHES sign a contract that screwed them in that they had to perform for free due to fine print in contract, this is the type of guy that unfortunately Beverly is loaded with, lace curtain wannabees,Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
