The annual Taste of Mt. Greenwood will be held on Aug. 15 at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St. Crafters and vendors are wanted. For more information, call Darlene at (773) 238-6103

Cruise Night

The first Mt. Greenwood South Side Cruise Night will be held June 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature beautiful custom autos and hot rods along the north side of 111th street from Whipple Street west. Parking lots are located at 111th Street and Albany Avenue and 111th and Whipple. People are invited to cruise on out with their auto.

Two additional South Side Cruise Nights will also be held on July 13 and Aug. 10.

Music will be provided by Mt. Greenwood Sound.

Golf Outing

The Mt. Greenwood Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing will be held on Wednesday, June 23, at Silver Lake Country Club, 14700 S. 82nd Ave., in Orland Park. Sponsorships and foursomes are available. The event is a shotgun start and will offer food, refreshments, prizes and raffles. Dinner- only tickets are available. For more information, call Darlene at (773) 238-6103(773) 238-6103.

Another blog has been destroyed by jackasses that are bent on destruction and spreading lies. The 19th Ward blog has shut down because of false comments put up by a "reader." This is total BS. My comment to you commentors bent on destruction is simple, "F U."

After much thought and consideration, I decided that this blog has run it usefullness. When it was started, it was meant to be a useful resource for community news. It has become a gossip rag. There are neighbors airing private laundry, people spreading lies using other people's sign on names, and 75% of the comments coming in are not making it through because of lewd and crude content. I have had people call me at home to discuss this comment or that one. People coming up to me to talk about what is posted. Threatening emails regarding comments, posted by others. It's not worth it. Freedom of speech may be in the Constitution, but we all know that the Constitution no longer has a place in this country of ours, especially when it comes to blogs.

All comments have been removed. However, I will leave up the blog for the links, as many people find them useful. In a few months, I will completely shut down the site. Thank you to all the readers and commentors.

3 Hole Golf Course at Ag School

In the southwest corner of Chicago, something beautiful was born....
In fact, a new three-hole golf course was the creation of many students at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.

"We did actually make good use of the land," said Dr. Robert Bush, a teacher at the school.

The land near the school was in bad shape two years ago.

"I started out when it was just weeds and car parts all over the place, basically." said Minor. And fallen trees, boulders and trash. "It was an area that was not used for anything productive and actually that because of was unsafe," said Dr. Bush.

With help from an architect, the students themselves designed the golf course, and then went to work.

They used heavy equipment to clear the land and put down sod. "I remember putting a special attachment on the Bobcat to lift an entire tree off the ground, to put it on one of the piles," said Mark Taylor, 17.

It was a lesson they could not have learned just sitting in a classroom.

"I looked at that as an opportunity to actually allow them to use earth-moving equipment and surveying equipment, and things that would have just been theory in a classroom," said Bush.

At a time when we've hear so much bad news about students at Chicago Public Schools, the agriculture high school students did something extraordinary with their minds and their hands.

"It feels amazing just to see the before and after," said Jasmine Lucas, 17. "It just makes you feel emotional cause you started when all this was just dead land."
The golf course, near 111th Street and Pulaski Road, is free; anyone can play there.

And it was designed to make special needs students feel welcome.

Officer Densey Cole who worked/lived in 022 Dist. returned from Colorado today to Chgo. to continue his rehabilitation. Colorado gave him a glorious farewell, but did any of you in 022 hear of him returning? Here was a guy who just a week before his injury caught a burglar who was doing a number on the citizens of 022. Its bad enough that this dept. does not appreciate the work of our police officers, but we as citizens of Chgo. & his neighbor cannot forget him. I found out from an officer that he will be 39 years of age this halloween & that sending him a card would be great. Well my family & I will be sending a card each week to him. He told me to send the card to the 001dist. at 1718 S. State St with his name on it & they will get them to him. The time has come for us to do the right thing & show our appreciation.

Officer Safety Alert: There have been numerous interactions between the Latin Kings in Garfield Ridge lately and its citizens. This has culminated in an attack on a fellow Policeman behind his garage at 2:30 am on Sun the 4th around 57th and Austin . The off duty copper went out to investigate a loud domestic behind his garage and ended up being surrounded by 5 Latin Kings. He asked them to leave and after they told him they didn’t give a fuck he was the Police, commenced to attack him. The fight continued until the 008th District arrived and placed all five in custody, two charged with Agg. Batt. to the Police and 3 charged with mob action. Copper had a trip to the emergency room for a possible scratched cornea and had taken multiple blows to his face and the back of his head. The good commander of 008 put a “Just Cause” on the Latin Kings.This is ridiculous where we have come in this city in regards to respect. The event culminated in the Copper being ha nded a CR# by the visiting Watch Commander (not from 008) because the piece of shits said they were just pissing in the alley and were attacked by the pajama wearing copper.The probable cause hearing for these vermin is 13 Oct 09 in Br. 48-4. If you have the time please show up and support this copper as I’m sure friends of the Kings will be there.

In my personal opinion, he pulled a fast one...we all knew Daddy Stroger was not going to fulfil his term if elected, a real gentleman would have pulled out... Claypool could have won that election. Father Perez Knights of Columbus Council 1444 on Chicago's Southwest Side both gave and received during its July meeting.

Grand Knight Rich Doyle presented BJ Moonan, chairman of Perez's Drive for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, a plaque from the Illinois Knights of Columbus State Council recognizing Perez for raising the greatest amount of money per capita throughout the 2008-09 drive among all Illinois councils during its drive.

Doyle then presented Pat Lynch, chairman of the General Assistance Fund Drive, with a state plaque acknowledging Perez for raising the greatest amount of money per capita for the assistance fund throughout the 2008-09 drive among all Illinois councils. These funds are distributed to Catholic parishes and schools that are victims of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.

Moonan, in turn, presented the proceeds of Perez's Drive for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities to representatives of 14 community-based organizations that provide services for persons with intellectual disabilities or organize Special Olympics programs.

The recipients included secular organizations and religious organizations, some Catholic and some other denominations.

They included Davis Developmental School, Mount Greenwood Elementary School, Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, Elim Christian School, Manteno Veterans Home, St. Christina Special Religious Education, Misericordia, Garden Center, Covenant Enabling Residence, Mount Greenwood Special Olympics, Stevenson School, Grimes School, St. Cajetan Special Religious Education and Mark Twain School.

"When my brother knights enter the order, they commit to performing charitable works in their community," Moonan said. "This evening demonstrates that commitment very vividly. God bless you people who continue to provide quality services to our brothers and sisters with intellectual disabilities."

Father Perez will kick off its 2009-10 drive Sept. 18.

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to males 18 years of age and older who are practicing Catholics. The Knights of Columbus is an organization of 13,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

The time has come to no longer allow ANY negative posts about any businesses! My ass is in a sling as to the negative comments, and therefore, will no longer be allowed. You might not like the business or their practices, but there will be no place for those comments here. There may be freedom of speech in America, but not on blogs. State all the postive comments you want, but the negative cannot be allowed. There is actually a long story behind this post, but needless to say, if I continue to allow these posts, the blog will be shut down.

Seven Holy Tombs

The majority was right. Mt. Greenwood was formerly called Seven Holy Tombs.

John R. Powers wrote three books about growing up in Mt. Greenwood, which he calls Seven Holy Tombs in the book. If you have never read them, go to the library and get them. They are hilarious. Last Catholic in America, Do Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? and The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice-Cream God.

Here is a little history of Mt. Greenwood from Wikipedia:

...Even though there were a small number of settlers in Mt. Greenwood, the origins of Mt. Greenwood began in 1877 when it was surveyed by George Waite. Mr. Waite established an area where he could trade with the local Native Americans. Mount Greenwood Cemetery was established around this time by Mr. Waite. With the cemetery came the saloons and restaurants and eventually tracks for horse and greyhound racing. Mt. Greenwood became part of Chicago in 1927. It was not until 1936 that the Works Progress Administration finally laid sewage systems, and paved and lighted city streets. As late as the 1960s, the Mount Greenwood Civic Association was still fighting the city for curbs and gutters. By the 1980s, Mount Greenwood was home to the last surviving farm in the city, which was developed as the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences at the southeast corner of 111th and Pulaski...

To add to the above, Mt. Greenwood also had quite a few brothels. People would travel by train for drinking, gambling and well, you know. Guess the neighbors buried in the cemetaries didn't complain too much.

A fund has been established to cover future expenses for the children of Cari Lyn Cook, the Countryside woman who died May 19 after being struck by a vehicle while crossing 47th St in La Grange.

The children, two-year-old Ellie and four-month-old Carson, were with their mother at the time of the accident. Carson suffered a fractured leg; Ellie was unharmed.

Monies collected by the fund will be used to provide "education, child care, medical needs and any other costs related to the needs of the children," according to information posted on the Cari Lyn Cook memorial website, cookfamilyfund.com.

"Although Carson and Ellie will have the love and support of many friends and family, life will not be easy as [Cari's husband] Matt tries to raise two young children while providing for his family," the website said.

The website also contains a guest book and photo album where visitors can share their thoughts, stories and pictures of Cari.

I am getting mentally exhausted reading all the negative comments. Do we all really hate EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING so much...geesh. The issue with BBQ's in Mt. Greenwood Park

Recently the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood raised close to a hell of a lot of money to re-new the old Mt. Greenwood Park. In many Chicago neighborhoods the park districts pays for the whole project but in working areas of the city where taxes are being paid big time, it is up to the local residents to pay for the park to be re-newed. Now that the Mt. Greenwood residents worked their asses off and personally paid for what many areas of the city get for free, guess who is now taking over the park? And before the flaming liberals jump all over me and call me racist (and I don't give a fuck if they do) for the last couple of weekends large groups of blacks from other neighborhoods have set up BBQ camp and coolers in the fenced in area surrounding all the new park district swings and playlot.

Now people from all over come to this park and BBQ and enjoy themselves but not on the fenced in playlot area. Smoke from their BBQs are going into the faces of the kids playing on the new playlot - which can get kids with Asthma sick and they are openly drinking alcoholic beverages on the kid's playlot too. You can see all the coolers in that picture. Filled with beer and alcohol. Now just imagine a big group of whites going to a all black Park, setting up smoking BBQs next to their brand new swings and playlot and drinking a bunch of booze. What do you think would happen? And the worse problem is that the park district employees are afraid to say anything to any person of color at Mt. Greenwood Park. They have no park permit, they are in an area that doesn't even allow cooking and drinking and littering their ass off. Can you please post this and see if anybody knows what I can do to stop this behavior and illegal activities?

The City of Chicago will be raising property taxes for the 13th time in 14 years to help bail out the budget of the Chicago Public Schools.

Okay, I have a CRAZY idea to save some money, how about they stop paying all that money to advertise that school starts the day after Labor Day. How dumb can someone be? It ALWAYS is the day after Labor Day for the traditional public schools (not including year round).

Here's another one, how about you no longer offer incentives for going to school, like "show up on the first day of school and get free Bulls' tickets" or "get $100 for every A." Or, free lunches only for the student, not the whole family, all year long. Or, stop giving out free uniforms, school supplies, backpacks, and G-d knows what else the give out. If you do the math on the free giveaways, that will be probably balance the budget, please leave a little extra as a cushion.

Meteor Shower!

Don't be alarmed if you see hundreds of necks craned to the sky tonight through Wednesday morning.

Up to 100 meteors per hour are expected to paint the sky with fiery streaks as the Earth passes through the dust trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, according to the Adler Planetarium. The display could be the most vibrant in years, the planetarium says.

The comet, discovered in 1862, is a giant iceberg made up of ice, rock and dust particles. Dust particles the size of sand slowly have been eroding away from the comet every time it approaches the sun, leaving a trail of debris that the Earth's orbit intersects once every year, according to the planetarium.

That means sky lovers can expect quite a show tonight and Wednesday morning.

The particles, known as meteoroids, create a meteor shower when they collide with the Earth's atmosphere and burn up, creating fiery streaks across the sky, according to the planetarium.
Mark Hammergren, an astronomer at Adler, said the best viewing time in the Chiocago area will be tonight before the moon is expected to rise at 10:09 p.m. and Wednesday before the moon rises at 10:40 p.m.

And the best viewing place? Get away from the city lights and look northeast while the skies remain dark. As Hammergren said, the darker the skies, the better.

Hometown Hero Gets the Ride of a Lifetime!

Monday was "way overwhelming" for Brian Otto, a rescue diver for the Chicago Fire Department who was honored for "doing my job."

That entailed saving the life of a 2-year-old boy who had fallen into Lake Michigan last year.

For his efforts, Otto got to ride in an Air Force Thunderbird F-16 fighter jet.

"This isn't why you do what you do. You do what you do to help people, to save some lives. It's a bit over the top, but it's once in a lifetime," said Otto, of Chicago's Mount Greenwood community.
During his flight, he soared to 15,000 feet at 600 mph and briefly endured a 9.2 G-force.
Otto got to ride in the jet because he had been named a "hometown hero" in a contest held by the Thunderbirds and WBBM-AM (780).

On a blustery April 18, 2008, Otto was the diver who pulled the boy out of frigid lake waters. High winds had blown the boy, still strapped into his stroller, into the 42-degree water at Belmont Harbor.

Otto was at the scene in moments thanks to skillful flying by Chicago fire department helicopter pilot A.J. Lisanti, of Chicago's Beverly community.

The crew had been doing training that day and had landed at Midway Airport to get more fuel when they heard the emergency call.

Lisanti figured a strong tailwind helped the copter hit about 180 mph.

At Belmont Harbor, with the assistance of fellow firefighter Bill Davis, of Chicago's East Side, Otto gingerly searched the murky waters. He finally found the boy and pulled him out.
Miraculously, the boy survived and suffered no ill effects, Otto said.

"Bill did an outstanding job. He was my tender. He put one hand on the wall, had me on a line. We searched the first area, and then he let some more line out and we got (the boy) on the second pass," Otto said.

Otto, 45, said it was "a long helicopter ride home because we didn't know what the results would be."

"A lot of your thoughts do go home," Otto said, saying he thought of his own son, Devin, 6.
Otto felt humbled Monday by the large media turnout at the Gary Jet Center, where the Air Force Thunderbirds are stationed as they prepare for the weekend's annual Chicago Air and Water Show.

"It's unbelievable. But there were 40 guys out that day on that run, and all 40 deserve to be here. I was one link in the chain," said Otto, a firefighter for 20 years.

Two of those links, Davis and Lisanti, were there to witness Otto's flight.

Lisanti joked that if Otto climbed out of the plane holding an air sickness bag. "that photo will be up in the firehouse tomorrow."

No bag was needed, but Otto was nervous.

"The last plane I was in, they gave me a drink and a movie," Otto said.

Otto did "get weirded out" when the flight reached a 9.2 G force. That means the pressure on his body was nine times normal, causing his eyesight to experience tunnel vision. But a few deep breaths got him through.

Air Force Major Tony Mulhare was the pilot whose flight plans included four rolls in five seconds.
"That one will spin your gyros a bit," Mulhare cautioned Otto in a pre-flight briefing session.
The highlight for Otto was the takeoff. With the plane 50 feet off the ground, Mulhare cranked it up to 350 mph as the plane flew straight up for a mile and a half.

"That caught me by surprise," Otto admitted.

The takeoff remains fun for Mulhare "because you have a speed rush from the ground."
"Most people either shout, scream or laugh because it's sensory overload. He was saying lots of 'Wows' and 'That's really cool.' He was making me laugh. My job is easy when the passenger is having fun. He will never forget this day and for us that is mission accomplished," Mulhare said.

Devin was relieved his Dad was OK and told mom, Carrie Otto, during the flight, "I'm anxious to see if he's alive."

"Oh, Daddy will be OK," she assured him.

Moments after Mulhare safely landed the F-16, Devin ran up and gave a big hug to his father, the hometown hero.

Mulhare then handed Devin a tiny American flag that been in the cockpit.

"We'll take good care of that," Otto said, adding he now has "coolest story on the block."

This coming Wednesday, August 5th, the Chicago Olympic Committee will be hosting an open meeting for community residents that are interested in learning more about our city’s bid to host the 2016 summer games here in Chicago. The meeting is in the “Butler Reception Room” at Saint Xavier University at 7:00 PM.

In my opinion, hosting the Olympics is a losing proposition for the taxpayers of Chicago . Mayor Daley is cutting jobs, salary’s and benefits for city workers under the guise of being broke, yet is still going to guarantee profits to the Olympics using OUR money. If he refuses to listen to the will of the people that oppose this and insists on having these games here, let him and the City Council guarantee these profits personally using their own homes, bank accounts, other personal assets and pensions to back it up. The only ones that stand to benefit from any of this are the “Clouted” Contractors and the corrupt city officials that will be getting kickbacks under the table in return for huge contracts being awarded. Besides, Mayor Daley made it quite clear that the only people that are even allowed to bid on some of these city projects are “Minority Contractor’s,” which as of last week includes special status for “Gays.” What happened to the EQUALITY everyone wanted so badly? Personally, I don’t care what race, gender or sexual orientation anyone is, discrimination is discrimination in any color. To give ANY preferential treatment to ANY group of people under ANY name or description, is nothing more than plain old “discrimination.”

Regardless if you’re for the games or against them, here is your opportunity to let the Olympic Committee, Mayor Daley and all the other politicians in Chicago know how you feel about the 2016 Olympics. Whining about what’s going on won’t make a bit of difference, come on out and express your opinion……….LOUD & CLEAR!

About 20 homes and businesses in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood were evacuated for about a half hour this morning because of a gas line rupture, officials said.

A contractor hit the line in the vicinity of 111th Street and Spaulding Avenue on the Far Southwest Side despite the area being marked, said Peoples Gas spokeswoman Bonnie Johnson.

The Fire Department declared a hazardous materials situation about 9:15 a.m. and ordered the evacuations. But the line was capped and people were allowed to return to their homes and workplaces by 9:45 a.m.

But as of noon, 70 customers remained without gas, Johnson said. She expected service to be restored later this afternoon.

I found this interesting and also a little ridiculous in some circumstances. I understand controlling your kids, but I cannot and will not have my teenager leashed to me. A "parent" can be anyone exercising parental authority over the child, but typically refers to the "custodial" parent. Parental liability stems from the custodial parents' obligation to supervise and educate their children.

Types of Acts by Minors for Which Parents May be Liable

Many states have enacted laws which hold custodial parents responsible for delinquent acts of their minor children including:

Vandalism

Theft and shoplifting

Automobile accidents (especially if junior throws a party and someone left drunk, gets hurt, kiss your house goodbye)

Fights and assaults

File sharing (e.g., music industry copyright cases)

In general, individuals who are injured or harmed by a minor may be able to file suit against both the minor and the minor's parents.

A co-worker's daughter was caught shoplifting (14 years old) and was arrested and sentenced to community service. Okay fine, good, she learned a lesson (hopefully). Well then mom gets a letter from the store stating that the mom has to pay $130 in restitution. WHAT??? There were no damages, the merchandise never even got of the store. What are you paying for. Maybe I am wrong, but when I drop off my kid at the mall and they do something SO STUPID, why do I have to pay?

So with the fighting at Mt. Greenwood, parents be forewarned, if someone gets hurt, YOU can be liable for DAMAGES.

I took some vacation days so posting will be sporatic.

FYI - Went camping. If you like camping, you have to try out Potato Creek State Park in Indiana (near South Bend). Huge lots, SUPER clean bathrooms with hot showers, nice lake for fishing with beach, pets welcome, playlots, hiking, biking, and much more...$17.00 per night for tent camping. I'm not so much a tent camper, but with a good air mattress, I didn't want to go home. The stars were unbelieveable. Two hours away and I felt like I was in another world. Then I came back, ugghhh.

Water park tomorrow. This is my staycation. Yeah me!

Dozens of graves have been dug up in historic Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip and the bodies dumped "in a massive pile on cemetery grounds," the Cook County sheriff's office says.

No details were immediately available, but Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart plans to hold a news conference at the gates of the cemetery in 4400 block of West 127th Street in the south suburb at 5 p.m.

His office says Dart will discuss the results of a financial crimes investigation at the cemetery, where many famous African-Americans are buried, including Emmett Till, Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington.

For at least the past four years, employees were excavating entire burial casks - including the concrete vault that surrounds the coffin - moving them to the area on the north end of the property and then smashing them into pieces, Dart said.

The sheriff's department started investigating the cemetery six weeks ago when the owners contacted the department, Dart said.

"It seems some people have some consciences and it bothered them," Dart said.
The investigation started as a financial crimes probe, but it soon took a turn, he said.
"What we found was beyond startling and revolting," Dart said.

He said the employees taking part in the scheme would bury new bodies in the plots, but would do so off the books so that the cemetery's records would not show their treachery. From the outside it would appear the bodies were never moved, he said.

This One's For Gina Benefit ~ July 11, 2009

On December 6th, 2008, Chicago Police Sergeant and long-time Mount Greenwood resident, Gina Dwyer-Meliska, suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of a condition called Apical Ballooning Syndrome (ABS). Although she was fortunate enough to receive CPR moments after her collapse, Gina was without oxygen for several minutes and remains in a minimally conscious state, changing the course of her life.

Although Gina's condition has stabilized, her biggest concern remains to be any neurological damage that may have occurred due to her loss of oxygen. Gina initially spent 17 days in ICU and has transferred to acute long-term care facilities. Unfortunately, Gina has faced many setbacks that interrupt her therapy. At this point, Gina faces indefinite, long-term care which will put a financial burden on the family.

Through this ordeal, it has become increasingly obvious how many hearts and lives Gina has touched throughout the years. First and foremost, Gina has always put her family in the number one position. Gina has a husband and three children all of whom Gina adores. Although they have been devastated by her illness, the family has been surviving with an outpouring of love from family, friends, and community.

With that being said, Gina is a remarkable, dedicated individual that has always contributed her time and efforts to others, working on countless benefits and in organizations going above and beyond the call of duty. Gina has been a dear friend and mentor to many, always seeing the good in a person and pushing those she knew to do their personal best, all while achieving her own personal goals: whether it be running a marathon or working towards her Masters degree, Gina has always been an inspiration.

Mt. Greenwood Bank Robbery

Chicago police were investigating a bank robbery that occurred this morning at a TCF bank branch in the Mount Greenwood area on the Southwest Side of the city.

The robbery happened about 9:55 a.m. and the man left with an unknown amount of cash, said Chicago Police Officer JoAnn Taylor.

She said the man appeared to have fled on foot.An FBI spokeswoman said the robbery happened at the bank branch located at 3128 W. 103rd St. (Jewel?) The man was identified as an African-American. No other details were immediately available. FBI officials were investigating along with Chicago police, officials said.

Two Beverly Restaurants Robbed

Two fast-food restaurants in Chicago's Beverly community were hit by armed robbers in the same day.

Robbers stole undisclosed amounts of money from Burger King, 1701 W. 95th St., and KFC, 10421 S. Western Ave., police said.

The first robbery was at Burger King at 12:41 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

After an employee took out the garbage, he was approached by two gunmen in the parking lot, police said.

The gunmen told him to open the restaurant's rear door and then demanded that a manager open the safe, police said.

The gunmen then ordered the manager and employee to lie on the floor while they stole money from the safe and from three cash registers, police said. The men fled on foot, police said.
At 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, a lone gunman stole an undisclosed amount of money from KFC, police said.

The man entered the restaurant, asked for a job application and then pulled out a gun, police said.

The man ordered two employees to put money into a bag, police said. After they put the money in a plastic bag, he grabbed the bag and ran from the restaurant down an alley, police said.
The gunman was described as a black man between ages 40 and 45, 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds. He had a beard and was wearing sunglasses. He wore a red baseball cap, dark blue shirt, black jeans and white gym shoes, witnesses told police.

This is why I don't go to the restaurants on Western. Hasn't the KFC been robbed numerous times? Why did the Taco Bell close again? Oh yeah, robbery gone bad. Western is easy pickings, young kids working. Thank the Lord that nobody was hurt in these two robberies. What's next? Metal detectors at the entrances of all restaurants? A pat down?

Another Racist Graffiti Incident in 60655

Black and white. Young and old. Residents and visitors.

All were angry Tuesday afternoon at Chicago's Kennedy Park, 11320 S. Western Ave., site of the 19th Ward's latest incident of racist graffiti.

Swastikas were painted late Sunday or early Monday on a Dumpster and a fence at the tennis courts on the south end of the park, Chicago police said.

This comes a week after racist graffiti, including swastikas and the words "Go home niggers" were found on the garage of a black family in the 10800 block of South Whipple Street, and another batch near 110th and Troy.

The graffiti in Kennedy Park was removed Monday morning by a city crew shortly after police investigated, said Terry Neary, a hot dog vendor in Kennedy Park.

"Graffiti alone is bad. I didn't know this one had a swastika. That bothers me. I know what that symbol is about," said Neary, of Alsip.

"I know there's freedom of speech, but graffiti is wrong. I hate the 'N' word," said Neary, who is white.

A call to the ward office of Ald. Ginger Rugai (19th) was not returned. Police did not say if they think there's a link between the graffiti incidences.

"It's probably kids," one officer said.

If police do find whoever is responsible, jail may be too strong a punishment, said Terry McEldowney. He has something else in mind.

"They ought to slap the (expletive) out of them. Take the cuffs off the cops' hands and let them slap 'em around," said McEldowney, of the West Beverly neighborhood.

"I'm offended that somebody's that stupid to do something like that. It's gotta be kids, right, acting like a fool? I mean the swastika represents everything that's wrong with the '30s and '40s. It's horrible. This is absolutely uncalled for. It's wrong. You can't do that stuff," said McEldowney, 63.

McEldowney, who is white, noted that the 19th Ward "is pretty well integrated."
When black and white children were leaving a summer camp at the park, Melissa Wilson walked up to pick up her son and daughter.

Wilson, who is white, was shocked to learn of the graffiti "especially after that incident with the lady's garage."

"It's disturbing, especially if it's kids doing it. They may not know why people would be upset. Or they're doing it for a reason.

"This is a neighborhood park. We're lucky to have this park," Wilson said.

Tom LePretre, president of the Kennedy Park/West Morgan Park Civic Association, was not available for comment Tuesday. His wife, Jennifer, called the graffiti, "very unusual because we are a diverse community."

Elizabeth Whitehead, who is black and due with her first child in August, took a break Tuesday to get a cool drink at the park.

"I'm not really scared unless they try to put their hands on me. That's a different story," Whitehead said.

Graffiti "does concern me. I didn't know people still did things like that. I'm kind of not surprised because, usually, police are on top of things. They'd make their rounds when the park closed. I thought they were still doing that," said Whitehead, of Beverly.

Sade Scott and her husband, Deandre Scott, stopped at the park for lunch.

"It's not going to be good if kids see it. Basically, it's not a positive influence," said Sade, who is black and lives in Calumet City.
