Most of you know this from other sites, but just in case anyone has been out of the loop lately.
From the Southtown:
At least 50 members of the Chicago Patrolmen's Credit Union have been targets of thieves who have used their debit card numbers, authorities said Tuesday.
Investigators suspect the thieves are stealing the card numbers when the cards are used to make online payments. Police don't think credit union employees are involved in the thefts. About 12 financial institutions, including the credit union, have been hit.
Investigators suspect the debit card numbers are being sold. Thieves use the numbers to electronically manipulate gift cards to purchase items and steal money from the victims' credit union accounts. Thieves have used the manipulated gift cards to purchase items worth a few hundred dollars to about $1,000, officials said.
Suspects in Rockford, Lansing and Crestwood have been arrested using the gift cards. Police are trying to identify who stole the debit card numbers. The retailers will suffer the losses from the scheme, authorities said.

Being a victim of the credit union scam, understand one thing--whether you use a credit or debit card the same thing can happen. Some where my card was copied and duplicated along with many others. These cards were physically used @the stores to make their purchases. My Debit/credit card was used at many stores in North Riverside, Oakbrook and Downers Grove. The bottom line is do not let anyone else process your card if there is not a scanner in front of you it is up to you to say no. this was not a fun experience since the card comes from our checking acct. Be careful and remember you have the right to question and stop all transactions!!!
I went to the Credit Union to question what was going on and they lied right to my face and denied any problems. That's all I needed to withdraw my money and take my business elsewhere. I can't trust the Credit Union if they can't be upfront with me. Thanks but no thanks.
A few years ago, the credit union was taken over by businessmen. I have no idea where they came from, but somehow, they were suddenly in charge. They visited roll calls and talked about all the good things they were going to do. I still think it was much better when it was run by the police for the police. Dan Mahoney was in charge. They were at Lake and Wabash.
Here's the problem, too many people who are not the POLICE banking where the POLICE bank. Shouldn't happen at all, being the POLICE is an exclusive job, nobody really wants us unless their the victim of a crime or wanting of a favor, then it is still our rear ends on the line. I say make the credit union exclusive to the POLICE again sorry civees but your not one of us. A member of the real POLICE!! If this offends anyone, too bad try getting sued for just doing your JOB, it can be most.....LIBERATING!!!
