Not to scare anyone, but this was close to home. We all shop over in that strip mall. This actually happened back in October, but it was in yesterday's paper.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of a career criminal wanted for robbing an elderly woman in October in Merrionette Park.

Authorities on Tuesday announced the reward being offered by Cook County Crimestoppers for the arrest of Juan E. Landa, 46, of Calumet City, who with an accomplice attacked the 70-year-old woman near 115th Street and Kedzie Avenue on Oct. 25.

Police said one of the men grabbed the woman by the throat from behind and threw her to the ground. She suffered two broken vertebrae in her neck and a broken ring finger when one of the men violently tried to remove her wedding ring, according to police.

The woman remains traumatized by the event, Merrionette Park police Sgt. Anthony Ferenzi said.

Landa's alleged accomplice, Charles Hughes, 52, of Harvey, is charged with felony robbery and aggravated battery on Dec. 7 and is being held on $300,000 bail.

Landa has a 21-year criminal history of both violent and non-violent offenses, according to court records. Authorities believe that he might be in Harvey, where he has family, or Dixmoor and warn that he should be considered dangerous.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Merrionette Park police at 708-396-3170. Tips can be anonymous.

Hopefully as these men are "career" criminals, they will go away for a long time.

60655, thank you for the blog but I have a serious problem with the comment below.

Robbery is one thing, but targeting and beating up on an old woman, that's just totally wrong. Hopefully as these men are "career" criminals, they will go away for a long time.

This is one of the problems going on in our area. Why in the world would you say "robbery is one thing, but targeting and beating up on an old woman, that' just totally wrong"!!!!!!!!!!

Do not get me wrong, this is a higher crime than just a robbery but people need to stop thinking that way. A robbery in the first place is wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Do not except the robbery just because it was not a senior citizen. IT IS WRONG NO MATTER WHAT.

WE NEED TO STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND COMPLAINNIG ABOUT THIS STUFF AND START DOING SOMETING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!

Let's start to make a difference and take ACTION. No matter what the action is, do it. No more talking about it in our back yards with friends. No more bringing it up at work. No more whispering about it while picking the kids up at school.

TIME TO TAKE ACTION!!!!!!!!!!

For the commenter above, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I have corrected my post. This kind of crime is wrong no matter who it happens to.

I cant think of a better word than "Savage". Not knowing the race of the offender , not caring either. This mutt needs nothing short of death. Jail does NO GOOD. He will learn newer and better ways to commit crimes, he will eat three square, work out , not be allowed to add chemicals into his body such as alchol drugs etc. and come out years later healthy strong and more determined to get "his". I am catholic , but there is no place for this beast than a hole. God bless the senior he attacked and beat. May she get real justice, not C(r)ook county justice of 8 months in jail!

I think that the Catholic churc h would better off without the membership of Anonymous 10:46 AM. Its very wrong to bring the church into this.

point is......arrest were made...
"Dat a boy" to Merrionette Park Police....

The only reason this case actually mentions names and arrests is because a member of the community got involved, intervened, and provided the PD with viable facts...

These are tough days in the entire city and surrounding suburbs....Please be vigilant, watch out for yourself and your neighbors....Don't hesitate to call 911 for everything. we like being dispatched to your neighborhood....The more calls that are placed, the more police will be in your neighborhood, and the greater potential you will have to continue to live in one of the safer communities in Chicago.

Also: Congrats to Sergeant lee bieleki; recipient of the new CPD DSNUTS ribon.

May be if the merrionette Park police cleaned up the rear entrance of the closed restaurant this would not have happened. People go behind the pawn shop, restaurant and get high. On any given day the place is littered with needles, junkie galore.

That pawn shop bring in undesirables along with the section eight living in the apartments.
