What a great neighborhood.

Thank you! In one month this blog has had over 4,000 hits! It just shows what a close knit neighborhood this is! I never thought it would take off like this. I am proud to call myself a 60655er. I started this blog and sent the link to 10 people and it has spread from there. There is no reason that when united we cannot get things done in this neighborhood!

I think the best park is Mt. Greenwood Park, especially for some of you that lost your job. You can earn extra cash by picking up beer cans, pop cans, plastic bottles etc. Just think, you will be helping the eco system plus making extra cash, but a word of caution, you better carry pepper spray or a club because you might be attacked by a unleashed dog, plus wear rubber boots 'cause there's tons of dog pooh out there!!

I do think this blog is a great idea. I dont think it should used for political attacks on anyone. The previous crack against Ginger is a cheap shot that doesnt belong here.

If we as 60655ers are not happy with our aldercreature, as I am most certinaly not, this is definitly the place to talk about it. Do you work for her? Is that why you are offended? She is just as much of a political hack as most of the other aldercreatures. I sure wish someone from the neighborhood, who cares about us would run against her this time. I'd vote for them, I certinally did not vote for her this last time!

Darn right it belongs there! Her office will not respond to us individually, maybe this blog is what she needs to see to how much she has been neglecting the "Red headed step child" of her precinct.

Any criticism of Rugai is well deserved. 111th & Kedzie has been talked about for 12 years. 115th & kedzie only gets talked about at election time. Mt greenwood park is a swamp if we get a 1/2 inch of rain. Crime is increasing in 60655 Ginger ignores the city workers that live in the area while giving herself a 6% raise and her staff a 5% raise. Central park is unsafe to drive from 103rd to 110th from sewer work the street is rising in some spots and sinking in others. She is a lap dog for Daley.

I thought this was going to be a nice blog about neighborhood things. Political bitching should take place at some other blog, not here.

How come every time you look at the Southtown that every community but ours has a police blotter? What is the city trying to hide?

This is the problem with the neighborhood! No one wants to talk about the problems in it. With out bringing these things up the neighborhood will never improve and will continue to head down hill.

Wake up Mt Greenwood, WE need to start improving things around here

I also enjoy the blog and thank you for starting it. I agree that bashing of anyone should be kept to a minimum. We're here to help the community, right?

Seriously get your head out of the sand! This blog is a great place to talk about the neighborhood! Talking about the BS politics around here has EVERYTHING to do with the neighborhood! I LOVE living here and if I keep my head in the sand as many people like to do this great neighborhood will end up like all the other crap neighborhoods in the city. Believe me, I see them everyday!

The more we choose to not talk about the obvious the quicker we will slide downhill. Change is uncomfortable but in this day and age the old and comfortable is draging us down. We have to figure out how to preserve 60655 and Rugai is not going to do it!

Sometimes the truth hurts.

As long as the discourse remains adult, I think this is a great place to talk about our elected officials as well as other community matters.

I love these liberals that post their warm and fuzzy view points on this blog. Just keep turning your back on the problems in your neighborhood and country, they'll go away eventually. This is the reason the criminals and our politicians are so out of control these days, certain segments of are society do not want to get involved. Stand up for what's right ya' slackers!

Dear anonymous:
Or not enough PC? I am loosening up on my censoring, but if it is too much swearing or just too racist, i will not post. It is one thing to express your opinion, but please do not use totally derogatory names. I want to post everything, but somethings just CAN'T get posted. Not sure if this is the case with you, but more comments are getting through as I realize that I can't censor to please everything, as you cannot please all of the people, all of the time. Thanks.

I would love a dialogue on why people who choose NOT to shovel - especially those who live on the busier streets. Where are kids supposed to walk to get to school?

Clean it up Honkey! Whoops, I mean Pasty, oh oh, White boy, oh shizzle ma' whizzle, I'm out!

It's great to see the neighborhood getting serious about its concerns.

The whole area - Mount Greenwood, Beverly and Morgan Park - provides a top-notch quality of life in the city. That's why I launched www.southwestobserver.com a couple years ago, to bring the neighborhoods together and give a voice to people who don't always feel like they have one. And boy have we heard a lot from our neighbors.

I think that criticism of our elected officials (as long as it fosters meaningful discussion) is a good thing. But let's also remember to offer praise where it's deserved (whether it's a well-run local business or a successful school).

Appreciate the answer and truth. I like the site and its a great tool to share things good and bad with your neighbors. I will work on being less negative, its a bad habit

60655,
I really appreciate your work. The idea of this blog is a great one. It gives people a chance to speak their mind. In today's society people are afraid to do it because of the ramifications that follow. Everyone looks at you as if you're racist, or against their political party, etc. I agree with many of the people on here, this is the place to talk about our elected officials. It's their job to answer to us. We put them in that office. Many need to be voted out. This city wastes so much money everyday on nonsense, then our mayor has the audacity to lay people off to fill a $450 million deficit. All the while giving these alderman and himself raises yet they fight the firemen, teachers and police officers tooth and nail for every penny each time a new contract is negotiated. If I could move I would. I love this neighborhood, but I can't take this politcal crap anymore. The whole state is sickening. Thank you for what you do. Mt. Greenwood is the best "neighborhood" in this city by far.

Could not agree more that Ginger needs to realize that there is another zip code in her area-60655!! Why can't 111th Street look like Western Ave with all the new sandwich shops & restaurants, etc? Also, what is going on with Walgreens on 111th Kedzie? Do we have to wait for the next election? When this project can be creating jobs. They want the business owners to clean up their properties but they are not doing anything with the vacant lots on 111th street. Now who will want to develop this property with our bad economy and with all the businesses closing down? Thanks Ginger!

Why don't we create our own ward? Ginger obviously does not want to fix up and help our zip code!!

The problem with Beverly (and Morgan Park) is that you can't tell if the kid in the hoodie is a neighbor or an opportunist from Englewood.

By the way, Beverly actually ends at 107th Street. South of 107th, it's Morgan Park up until 119th Street.

I do believe that Mt. Greenwood is a neighborhood that deserves the attention that Beverly gets from Ginger. Just because some of us have to live in the city does not mean we are ghetto trash. A lot of Mt. Greenwood residents have degrees and careers and money to spend in the neighborhood in which they are forced to live because of perhaps the requirement of their spouse to live here. It is just a shame that that fact is not recognized by those that have the power to bring change to this community. There are so many of us who would spend our money in the neighborhood if given the chance. This area is a viable retail outlet; however no one is willing to take a chance and lend the resources needed to improve 111th Street and the surrounding retail areas. There is no hope of improvement if we do not have the backing of our local elected officials. In time, you will see more and more people start to give up on the neighborhood because there is absolutely no support from those that hold the power to make decisions and bring about positive change with regard to the economic growth of our community.

It seems like no one realizes that the 60655 zip code goes all the way up to western. It's not just a Mt. Greenwood zip code. And I am not a supporter of Rugaii nor am I connected to anyone in the ward or city....but I can't help thinking that all the people bitching on here are people who only know how to Bitch and do nothing to make our area better. I have personally walked into the ward office a couple times in the last few years. I never once saw Ginger but her staff followed up on my requests or in assisting me each and every time. A few times I need to follow up until my request was completed but always addressed.
Stop bitching and try being a part of the solution. And yes I know there are some development projects, etc that it would be difficult to have a say in but there a ton of great organizations in the Beverly/Mt. Greenwood area that could use volunteers, new voices, creative ideas, etc. Stop complaining until you have actually tried to be a part of positive change. We are not living in a ghetto, poverty area and if you want the advantages they obviously get because they are at the poverty level then move in and take advantage....I'm staying in 60655 and working with the organizations who try to bring in the same resources for our families.

Great blog....you are doing a very nice thing for the community.

Elected officials should be doing the job they have been elected to do. And our alderman does nothing. Oh, wait a minute, Rugai was actually appointed by big dick Daley. That's too bad, had that not have happened, we may have been allowed to VOTE in an alderman that would have made a difference in our community. But instead she gets put into power by the Daley machine and ever since she has been sucking the votes out of the "non-tax payers and leftover hippie liberals in this ward. And to the blogger who said "St. Xavier will get whatever they want," that's not entirely true. Rugai has blocked St. Xavier on many expansion projects. Most recently on building a new book store at 104th & Pulaski. She also is blocking plans to build a assisted living community at 100th and Central park that the Sisters of mercy are trying to get approved. It doesn't matter who you are, if there is a plan to make an improvement in Mt. Greenwood, Ginger will be there to step in your way. Thanks for nothing.

Ginger,

Please make the MGLRC an open to the public forum on a regular basis. We are tired of the vacant lots and have heard that many businesses are going under. "Coming Soon" is a term we are all tired of hearing. If you want us to become involved, give us access to the tools to improve our community. MGLRC, TIF and any other funds, how much is there, who can spend it, who authorizes its use, etc.......Hear us when we say "an organization is not performing its duties adequately." Change some of the leadership.
