Baseball post

I know that some of you like the baseball history and trivia that Life's too short is posting, however, some of you don't.

So, I am asking Life's too short to post his baseball facts and such on this post. That way the people who are interested can read it if want to and those who don't want to read it don't have to.

It's only what 14 days until the White Sox' home opener.

Mark Buehrle was born on Friday, March 23, 1979, in St. Charles, Missouri. Buehrle was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 16, 2000, with the Chicago White Sox.

"You don't want to make that one mistake and give up a hit. I could feel my knees a little bit, a little shaken, a little extra adrenaline going for the ninth inning. I can't believe I did it (threw his first career no-hitter). Perfect game would have been nice, too." - Mark Buehrle

1933 - Babe Ruth, another victim of the Depression, takes a pay cut of $23,000 from his previous salary of $75,000.

Gee I wonder if any of today players would take a pay cut as a result of the economy ...

Listening on the radio for play-by-play,
I hear, "Welcome to Opening Day".
Despite cold temperatures for today's game,
A sellout crowd has came.
I turn my attention to the bullpen.
The starting pitcher is number 10.
Managers present line-ups
Pitcher throws warm up.
Umpire yells, "Play Ball!"
Fielders heed the call.
Innings one, two and three,
No score too be.
Inning five,
Visitors come alive
Back-to-back singles down the line.
Sacrifice fly - position nine.
No one at fault,
But one run results.
Inning eight,
Still not too late.
The home team takes their swings.
A base hit and stolen base, leadoff would bring.
Will this one get a hit?
No, second base smothers it.
Fly ball and a play at the plate.
A perfect throw ends the eighth.
I review the pitcher's stats,
As the visitors come to bat.
Four straight balls and a walk,
Pitching coach comes out too talk.
A new pitcher trots to the mound.
Three feared sluggers shut down.
Bottom of the ninth,
Climax at its height.
An error on a bad hop.
Line drive over shortstop.
Fans express belief,
Even with the closer now in relief.
Double off the fence.
The crowd is in suspense.
Rounding third, anxiously awaiting the final word.
This is what I heard.
"Here comes the winning run",
Safe! and "That's a winner" 2-1.
Spectators approve with a deafening roar,
Seconds later, fireworks would soar.
Baseball and America's pastime is my reason,
I think I'll go to another game this season.

OPENING DAY
by Garret Craig

SIX months have past; 25 weeks, with the length
Of five long winters! and again I hear
These cheers, filling the stadium
With a spine-tingling rush.--Once again
Do I behold these steep and lofty bleachers,
That on a wildly busy scene impress
Thoughts of more craziness; and connect
The landscape with the quiet of the sky.
The day is come when I again enter this structure.
Here, under the shade of the upper deck,
And view the spectacular greens of the infield.
These bases of white canvas, these perfect squares,
Which in this season, are sacredly unused.
The players all in uniform, sporting the home team crest
Amidst the wood and leather tools of their craft.
Finally I see the pitcher, approaching his glorious mound
The umpire gives the nod and speaks those famous words...
I hold my breath and anxiously wait...
At last--The season has begun.

1902 - The nickname Cubs is coined by the Chicago Daily News, when an unbylined column notes that, Frank Selee will devote his strongest efforts on the team work of the new Cubs this year. In time, the Cubs will replace the Colts as the nickname for Chicago's N.L. club.
** Maybe they should have stuck with the Colts **

Opening Day

By Bill Burns

And again it is time…
and you know it.
Without looking at the calendar
you know it’s the time
because you can smell it in the air
and feel it on your neck and back.
You hear the rising voices of the young
as they begin again
to toss the ball around.
So…
you get ready one more time
for that first trip to the park
to see the boys play the game
again.
It’s baseball.
BASEBALL…
Not more than life,
but pretty damn close.
Something you can love
eat
breathe
taste
& hold onto…
a language all its own
that you can share with friends,
your wife,
your children,
strangers even.
And so you must go
once again
to feel it and hold onto it,
to savor and be hurt by it…
to jump for joy and cry in deep despair…
to make it a part of you
before it’s gone…
or you are.

Baseball Is
by Greg Hall ©

Baseball is grass, chalk, and dirt displayed the same yet differently
In every park that has ever heard the words play ball.
Baseball is a passion that bonds and divides all those who know it.
Baseball is a pair of hands stained with newsprint,
A set of eyes squinting to read a boxscore,
A brow creased in an attempt to recreate a three-hour game
From an inch square block of type.
Baseball is the hat I wear to mow the lawn.
Baseball is a simple game of catch
and the never-ending search for the perfect knuckleball.
Baseball is Willie vs Mickey, Gibson vs Koufax,
and Buddy Biancalana vs the odds.
Baseball links Kansan and Missourian, American and Japanese,
But most of all father and son.
Baseball is the scent of spring,
The unmistakable sound of a double down the line,
And the face of a 10-year-old emerging from a pile of bodies
With a worthless yet priceless foul ball.
Baseball is a language of very simple words
that tell unbelievably magic tales.
Baseball is three brothers in the same uniform
on the same team for one brief summer
Captured forever in a black and white photo on
a table by the couch.
Baseball is a glove on a shelf, oiled and tightly wrapped,
Slumbering through the stark winter months.
Baseball is a breast pocket bulging with a transistor radio.
Baseball is the reason there are transistor radios.
Baseball is a voice in a box describing men you've never met,
In a place you've never been,
Doing things you'll never have the chance to do.
Baseball is a dream that you never really give up on.
Baseball is precious.
Baseball is timeless.
Baseball is forever.

Baseball Season to Begin

by Erif Forgaard

Today I share a snow-dusted lawn
with my father
and the smell of leather
a season removed from the shy promise of spring
a lifetime removed from a youth without baseball
Today we're having the game of catch we never had
catch we should have played 25 years ago
huddled under thick jackets
there is a healing here
Back and forth
the mitts pop -
the times he was there for me
the times I wasn't there for him
amid the rustle of pines
there is a rhythm here
Back and forth
the ball floats -
across the lawn
across the years
Perhaps winter is not the time for this
perhaps his arm is not what it was
but this morning beneath the cool gray
under the white silence I am young,
and this man who walked with giants stands
breath rising,
snow falling,

a giant still

Opening Day in Chicago

Baseball
season begins
on a cold afternoon
as blankets warm cheering fans and

the first pitch soars across home plate
stinging our catchers hand
frozen inside
his mitt.

Hoorah, hooray!
The best of reasons
Is Opening Day.
And cheering the players
And counting the gate
And running the bases
And touching the plate.
And tossing the ball out
And yelling Play Ball!

Let nothing sour
This sweetest hour;
The baseball season's|
Back in flower!

Thome swings the maple,
The Cell is aroar,

the long
winter season is no more.

A Day At A Game

Buying peanuts and cracker jacks
and not worrying if they ever get back
are words that you might hear,
in that baseball park
that is never dark
and has such energy in the air.

Programs here!
or souvenirs here!
is what you might here someone yell,
along with baseball hats
and baseball bats
there's so much they try to sell.

While watching the game you love
with your baseball glove
you just find yourself waiting there
for that home run hit
to where you sit
it's the perfect souvenir.

A day at the game
is never the same,
you'll always see something new,
so take a day
to get away
Americas favorite pastime waits for you.

Oh Yeah by the way APRIL FOOLS !!!
