Opening Day in Chicago

Baseball
season begins
on a cold afternoon
as blankets warm cheering fans and

the first pitch soars across home plate
stinging our catchers hand
frozen inside
his mitt.

Hoorah, hooray!
The best of reasons
Is Opening Day.
And cheering the players
And counting the gate
And running the bases
And touching the plate.
And tossing the ball out
And yelling Play Ball!

Let nothing sour
This sweetest hour;
The baseball season's|
Back in flower!

Thome swings the maple,
The Cell is aroar,

the long
winter season is no more.

7 Days to Opening Day !!!!

Boat launch in Ottawa, under the bridge and then go to Starved Rock. Starved Rock Marina and Ottawa Boat Club good too.

Anonymous said...

Starved Rock is a little tricky, you must know the water. Swift current and rocky bottom. Lake Michigan is good. Nice launch at 63rd and lake shore drive in the harbor, just look for the trailors, you can't miss it. Then go out of the harbor, head south and fish along South Shore country club from 67th st. to 71st st along the rock piles, about 50 to 70 feet off shore, nice rock bass. Or if you just want to take a nice ride, launch at 127th and the bridge in Crestwood, just follow the launch ramp signs and you can go all the way downtown, very, very nice on a warm day. Pack the cooler and have fun!!!!!

MIRACLE MAN":
An Original Poem
by Holly Russcher

The night of July 24, at Comiskey Park, some said
A flame would be rekindled that had long lain cold and dead.
Fans hoped to shout when all was done "The White Sox are on track!"--
But so far, they simply whispered "Robin Ventura's coming back."
That left-handed home run hitter with warm smile and matchless heart
Four Gold Gloves he'd won at third base with defense that looked like art
Nearly crippled in a freak mishap on March the twenty-first,
Now back eight days before schedule, flouting all talk of the Worst.
The Texas Rangers would oppose the Sox as Chitown twilight fell;
When the home team's lineup was announced there came a joyous yell.
Behind the plate the ump cried "Play ball!"; the game duly began
With disconcerting fashion: a hit for Texas' leadoff man.
Doug Drabek was a-pitching, gold of hair and steel of eye,
A no-hitter was beyond his scope, but for shutout he would try.
He'd also pitched the night when Robin had been stricken down--
Did that memory now haunt him as he stood upon the mound?
Nothing-nothing was the score when Robin first came to the plate
And received a standing ovation which for a full minute did not abate.
He acknowledged it with a smile and wave, which made the fans go wild;
So glad was he to play again that his face shone like a child's.
"We love you, Robin Ventura! We know you'll make us proud!"
Cried the matriarchs and lasses present in that evening's crowd.
Men, rarely so demonstrative, rose on their feet to say
"Come on, Robin!" But he grounded out, and walked--not limped--away.
In the still-scoreless seventh inning, Rangers hurler Ken Hill tired.
With Frank Thomas on, he walked Albert Belle, and then his luck expired
For Harold Baines, the quiet DH, drove Frank home without a word.
The Sox led, but Robin had grounded out a second time...and third.
Matt Karchner came in next to pitch and gave up a home run.
A worried hush fell on the fans who knew the score'd been tied at one.
Already the eighth inning: did the Sox not have a chance?
Would this night of joy instead be one where Texas got to dance?
Dave Martinez ignored Hill's pitches, and at last he drew a walk.
Ozzie Guillen bunted him to second; announcer Ed Farmer began to talk.
"Durham next, then Ventura, who so far is oh-for-three."
Ray Durham hit into a groundout. What now would the Sox-fans see?
Robin sauntered to his rightful place; this was his last at-bat.
Facing a dreadful situation, in his comeback game at that!
With one swing he could put the Sox ahead if things went well,
But if he was the last out? Such a disgraceful tale to tell!
Hill stood on the mound in silence, wound up and pitched the ball.
What occurred in the next instant was a shock to one and all.
Ed Farmer's voice broke in wonder as these words his lips did yield:
"Hill with the pitch...Ventura lines it, deep left center-field!"
"It's gonna get down, and go to the warning track! Picked on a hop by Rusty Greer--
VENTURA DOUBLES IN MARTINEZ!!!!" And the crowd took up the cheer;
Praise for a valiant hero who'd won hearts across the land.
As Robin left the field in the ninth, he tossed his cap into the stands.
That night in other ballparks spoiled superstars had played,
Ignoring fans and only caring for how much they're paid.
And on the cheeks of their heartbroken fans, tears of loathing burned...
But happy tears flow at Comiskey, for Robin Ventura has returned.

First of all, I am a proud union member, I think unions are the backbone of the American workforce. I also appreciate the thankless efforts of our police officers.
But, why are they choosing to picket when the Olympic committee is here? Do they not want the Olympics? If Chicago gets the Olympics, wouldn't it mean overtime for a lot of police officers. Wouldn't the Olympics help the financial mess the city is in, even just a little?
I think the police DESERVE a raise, but I think picketing in front of the committee would be slapping the city of Chicago in the face, not Mayor Daley.
Why not picket on the day the host city is being announced? It would not affect the committee's decision, and the media of the world would be in Chicago.

I dont mean the police union or firemens union, I mean other unions. Building trades and Teamsters.

Whats there to be proud of? Corruption?

Anonymous said...

Why are they choosing to picket when the olympic people are here. I dont know the police cant strike, so they have to do something to get attention. The Mayor has given contracts to all the trade unions the day the old contract expired, He gave the teachers a new contract the day the old one expired. The police and fire have been forced to wait almost 2 years now no raises not when gas was $4 a gallon not when stroger raised sales tax, not when property taxes went up. not when the kids tuition went up. I think the Olympics would destroy Chicago. Name one project mayor Daley has completed on time or on budget. Milinium Pk. (sp) over cost behind schedule. Ohare airport new runways overcost behind schedule. Midway airport rebuild overcost behind schedule. Wacker dr. rebuild way over cost. Soldiers field over budget. The olympics will be nothing but corruption on an even larger scale than usual. The police deserve a fair contract. The mayor has stopped replacing officers as they retire leading to large shortages and unsafe work conditions and now his nephew is being given contracts to waste police pension money by the pension board the mayor appoints, the mayor is criminal but thanks to the largely ignorant vote as Im told citizens of Chicago the only hope is the US attorneys office.

The IOC is not picking a city until Oct we have been waiting 21 months for a contract its time to picket now. Yes the economy is not doing well but it was doing grat in july 2007 when our contract expired along with the teachers, electricans carpenters teamsters laborers and other city workers but we cant strike and they can so the city gave them all contracts and has ignored us for 21 months saving alot of money and collecting interest on money that is do us.

As for the city being broke BS. there is hundreds of millions in TIF funds from all over the city . TIF funds are property taxes that are supposed to pay for schools, street repairs and city services instead Daley uses this money as a slush fund for his developer friends to build condos no one is buying and offices and Malls nobody wants (Block 37). property taxes are being misused by the city by being diverted into TIF funds and then the city has to raise your taxes to pay for the city services.

But, why are they choosing to picket when the Olympic committee is here? Do they not want the Olympics?

NOT SURE, BUT MAYBE BECAUSE DALEY WANTS THE OLYPICS SO BAD, THEY ARE TRYING TO EMBARASS HIM AND SHOW THEY THIS IS HOW THE MAYOR TREATS CITY WORKERS, POLICE ETC...IT WASN'T TOO LONG AGO HE CALLED ALL CITY WORKERS LAZY....MOST COPS I TALKED TO DON'T WANT THE OLYMPICS & THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IT (PROTESTS, POSSIBLE BOMBINGS) ETC...I DON'T THINK DALEY GIVES A RATS ASS WHERE & WHEN THEY WILL PROTEST, BUT MORE POWER TO THEM....THE NEWS DOESN'T REPORT THEY HAVE HAD NO CONTRACT IN 2 YRS, THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM. AND DALEY PUSHED THEM IN A CORNER WHEN HE CHOSE TO TELL THE MEDIA HE'S PULLING AN "OFFER" OFF THE TABLE & THAT DALEY IS TRYING TO USE THE BAD ECONOMY AS AN EXCUSE TO GIVE LITTLE OR NO RAISES...WITH THAT LOGIC, SHOULDN'T THEY HAVE GOTTON A BIG RAISE WHEN THE ECONOMY WAS GOOD - LIKE 2 YRS AGO...?? MOST SAT THAT THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES THAN JUST THE MONEY... I FOR ONE SUPPORT THE COPS....HELL DIDN'T THE ALDERMEN JUST GIVE THEMSELVES A HUGE RAISE..

Is it not true that every Olympics has lost money for the host city ... There was a special on the last Olympics held in China where the "The Birdsnest" state of the art stadium sits unused and is nothing more than a tourist attraction ... yet the host city has to pay for it's up keep. As for Jobs it would provide. True ... the kickbacks it would provide to Daley would be enormous. How much of that money would go to the people? Think realistic people, by protesting Daley and the Olympics and succeeding to stop them from coming here .. you will be taking money out his pocket. Go FOP and the cops ... Let them take the gloves off to fight these gang bangers and take back the city

Jim McMahon said...

Picketing while the Olympic Committee is in Chicago is not only a good idea, it a great idea and the only recourse Daley has left our Policemen. He has got to learn not to play around with other people’s money and it would be poetic justice if this were to cost him the Olympics because he wants them so bad. While I agree that Chicago could sure use more jobs, it’s my understanding that although the Olympics will create short term jobs in preparation for and during the games, those jobs will end with the conclusion of the events. You’ve got to ask yourself if it’s worth all the headaches, congestion and crime it will bring with it when the only ones that really make any money are the corrupt politicians that will be lining their deep pockets by swindling money for contracts.

The Police contract has been expired for around 2 years now, why should they have to WAIT? Their bills won’t WAIT, taxes won’t WAIT, the politicians don’t WAIT, Welfare doesn’t WAIT, Social Security doesn’t WAIT, why should any of us have to? These jobs are their livelihoods with wages earned by regular hard working people, not Wall Street executives. These people are our family members, our friends and neighbors who risk life and limb on a daily basis, not charity cases or recipients of some kind of government handouts. Don’t forget that they have families and bills just like everyone else does and I’m sure we all can relate with that.

Just like everyone else, our Police and Firemen deserve a contract with a fair raise and should also insist on being paid 10% interest on ALL their back pay. This has evolved into a sick and twisted little game that Daley plays with the Police and Fire Departments. He gets to use all of THEIR money, interest free, and refuses to give them a contract until the dollar amount owed gets so high that he is able to give them insufficient raises while cutting their benefits, and effectively bribes them with their own money. Who wouldn’t want access to the millions of dollars to invest and earn money with, interest free? I sure would. Where can any of us get interest free money? In fact, at this late stage of the game I believe the Police and Fire Unions should be negotiating their next contracts now, and demand an 8 year contract instead.

And when they do finally settle, they give them their OWN money back and make the percentages of the raises lower on the front end of the contracts so they don’t have to give them as much retroactive pay. 1% for the first year, 2% for the second, 3% for the third, and 10% for the forth year may total up to 16% over 4 years, but it’s NOT a 4% annual raise. 4% the first year and 4% compounded every year thereafter is a 4% annual cost of living raise. That’s how inflation works, so that’s how raises should work. For the life of me I can’t figure out how the FOP or Local #2 has allowed this kind of nonsense to go on, but this will have to change if they ever plan on getting a contract for their members in a timely manner. As it currently stands, the City would be fiscally irresponsible to be fair with City employee’s.

I stand firm with the Police on this issue, at ANY cost, you can decide for yourselves.

I guess you want the Olympics so that they can beautify the ghetto even more while our neighborhood looks more and more like a ghetto. You mopes are soft in the head. Give the Olympics to Tokyo or Rio, we have to many problems here that need to be taken care of. The Olympics will break this city even more, just like the bean (over budget), the Millennium park (over budget), Millennium Park Parking garage (over budget). So what is going to change now? They will hire Minority contractors just because of skin color not quality of work, who will bilk the system the same as they do the welfare and social security system. Then we will be in even a bigger hole and you mopes that think your little house is worth 400K will be crying when the City nosedives and turns into Detroit when you can only sell your shanty for 110K.

No Olympics.

GOOD LUCK to all you 60655 Chicago Firefighters who are going to take the Fire Lieutenants test this coming Saturday. Your chances of getting promoted are as good as George W. Bush being re-elected in this corrupt town. If the chosen few are not in the top 100, they will probably lose the results like they did 15 years ago. Why do you think the Captains exam is still in the justice dept.? Whether you pass, fail or get the shaft you are still Firefighters, the best in the country and don't ever forget it!!!!!!

Sour, not Bitter said...

I am a 60655 FF taking the test this Saturday. I believe my luck has been enhanced by putting in 200 plus hours of study in. That's not much, I work with people who have done a lot more. I have also not done anything that would put me up on the radar of "The Man", so I feel I might get a "fair" shake at the oral interview.
That being said I know quite a few people who have gotten the shaft. I know a lot more who had the same approach as me, and it worked out. They waited a lot longer to be promoted because of race norming and "merit" appointees, but they got there.
I may or may not make it, but that will not give my life more meaning. I have a good job now, a great family, friends, neighbors, etc.
I support the CPD in their protest of Mayor Daley. The protest is not about the Olympic bid. The timing of the protest ensures publicity which is what any protesters desire. This will not affect the bid one way or the other, Chicago 2016 CEO Pat Ryan said so himself.
It will piss off the scummy, thieving, parasite Shortshanks. Good. I don't give a rat's a** if we get the Olympics or not. It will create jobs leading up to it , but it will definitely create an ocean of debt that will be paid by the taxpayers of Chicago and Illinois. Shortshanks loves spouting off about how 85% of the budget is for Police and Fire(EMS), but how much of that is salary and benefits? You want to begrudge a raise in pay commensurate with other city employees fine. How many other City of Chicago employees, besides Police and Fire, have not recieved a raise in the last two years? I'll bet zero, unless you are Shakman exempt. In the meantime I'll continue to stand on the right side with the CPD and await the day that we will get the same consideration as other employees.
Hey Daley, GFY.

Since when did so many 60655ers become police haters. They bust their ass everyday putting up with pos and they can't even get compensated for it. Do you work six days a week plus overtime? Do you have to get up on your day off to go to court? My husband is a p/o and yes he choose that job but why shouldn't he fight for a raise/contract, you do at your job. With the economy in a slump and crime on the rise, why should the police get screwed, their the ones tryng to clean up the city.

Are you going to work seven days a week if the Olympics came here? Look what happened at the Taste of Chicago and the SSI parade. We do NOT want the Olympics. Whats going to happen to all the homeless and section 8 downtown...oh wait Daley will move them our way

Initially, I would have said I agree 100% with this guy. (So maybe there are 2 people on this blog feeling this way). However, Jim McMahon you helped clarify a little bit of what it is you guys want. Could someone concisely put what it is your looking for, (not what a crook Daley is, that I know)
Not a percentage.

Not ALL union officials are corrupt, yes there are some bad ones. UNIONS set prevailing wage. Unions got cops and firemen (brotherhood of the barrel) where they are now. It is because of labors ability to organize any advancements have been made for any of us.....cops, fireman, trades, nursing, etc.

We hate Daley, we put him where he is, whether or not your were one of the few ones that didn't vote for him. 60655 and the city has made some foolish choices. You guys voted your FOP in, a MAJORITY voted for the FOP. It sucks that you don't have a contract.

ALL workers deserve to have safe working conditions, decent pay, and decent hours, and certainly a prevailing wage. I want the city to do right by all of us. You have the right to picket, I hope it helps you reach a fair agreement.

But, yes I do believe while the olympics will stroke the stroke Daley, it will be good for jobs. God knows I don't want to see another neighbor's house (not a mcmansion) foreclosed on. Good Luck.
To you Lt. test takers good luck, and keep making us proud, hopefully some of you will break the glass ceiling.

Thank you cops and fireman, they will never in reality pay you enough, but hopefully fair.

Dear 60655 Firefighter, I can appreciate your optimism about your chances of doing good on the Lieutenants test because of your study time and I hope you are right, but if you think because you didn't ruffle any feathers with the oral board officers think again. They already know who will pass or fail, just look at past promotion lists, it's always the same quys right on top. 15 yrs. on the job and they are Battalion Chiefs, coinsidence or clout or the smartest men on earth. Don't kid yourself, it's all fixed, always has been and always will be. Why didn't the police and fire unions get together for this protest / rally today, aren't you all in the same boat as far as contracts are concerned? Channel 7 last night talked about taking your clothing allowance and duty availability pay away. Some alderman said the city could save $80 million dollars a year, that's $4,700.00 that the police and fire will lose annually, yet the alderman vote themselves a huge raise. Be careful our great public guardians, as far as the mayor and alderman are concerned, you ain't worth spit. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND THANKS.

One of the MAIN reasons Daley NEVER gives the Police Dept a new contract on time is very simple. The longer he makes them wait for their raises, the longer all of that money sits in the city's (Daley and friends) bank accounts earning HUGE amounts of interest. And the City NEVER pays the Police for interest on money that those particular individual police officers would have made if they had it when they should have, ie invest it, etc. Think about it this way~ let's say you owed someone $1,000,000. You have the money! But, you have a choice~ you could either pay that person the one million that you owe him (because you have it) OR you could leave it in your account and collect the HUGE amount of interest for a few years and keep putting off giving it to the person who rightfully should have it. This is, of course, what the City does. Makes sense, right? Why pay on time when you can put it off for years and make a killing off it in interest? It's all about money, people. Don't believe anything the powers that be tell you. They're all lying money-grubbing criminals. And please, please, PLEASE when it comes time for the mayoral election, let's wake up and do what's right. Daley has been here for too long and ultimate power corrupts absolutely. It is far and away time for him to go! We cannot allow him to retire and go out on his terms! We HAVE to vote him OUT next time! No matter who is running against him! And the Olympics would be terrible for the City. Don't be naive and believe what that rich old man Ryan tells you on the News. He's a rich old man that wants more money. I truly don't believe the IOC will choose Chicago (they would be crazy too! LOL!!), but for all of us regular people here, it would NOT benefit us at all!

Village Voice said...

To answer the Rita kid / sex offender question once and for all ... To ask for the kids name is irresponsible. He/they are juveniles and therefore their identity is protected and cannot legally be revealed by the school or the police. If the alledged incident occurred then you run the risk of not only identifying the offender(s) but the victim and the victims family and the offenders family, who may be good people and are trying to cope with the situation the best they can. Counseling would be the first recourse and trying pry the name out of a police officer or detective is also irresponsible. People, things happen in this city everyday. Terrible things that never get reported in the paper or on TV because the people involved are not rich, politicians, policemen, firemen, or sports figures. Why, because it does not make good print or promote ratings. The key thing in this alledged incident is that some children need help, guidance, and support. Our children are exposed to way too much, way too early in their lives now. Things are commonplace on TV that would been rated R when I was a kid. Think about how we live our lives today people and what we accept as routine. When I was a kid the "F" bomb was never said. Now it is part of the everyday language. I once witnessed my Dad knock a guy on his keester because he said it in front of my mother. I suppose many people are appalled by this. If you feel St. Rita's actions in this matter are inappropriate, then you can make a choice and transfer them out of there. But rest assurred that you are only hiding from the truth. This has and does go on in every school in the city. So maybe if you want to protect your kid from the real world. Home school is your option. If you want to do something contructive, know where your kids are, what they are doing, and who they are hanging with. Help them make the right decisions. It's hard I know because I have raised three and have one more to go. and once they hit those teenage years they look at you like you are from outer space. But find the time to remind them that you love them and you care about them and with Gods help, a little luck, and their good common sense they hopefully learn from you, they will turn out to be good people.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to know what is going on with the whole molestation issue at Rita. If a sexual predator, of any age, is identified, the public has a right to know and protect themselves from being victimized. Would you let your child play with a sex offender? How about knowing a sex offender is hanging around the park? What if your daughter was asked to a dance by this kid but you didn't know he was the offender??? Get real. Molestation and sex abuse of any form is UGLY and you had better believe I would want to protect my precious little ones from that. I'll pray for the victim and victimizer, but this is serious.

Very well put "Village Voice." Most people who don’t live or work in the "inner City" will never hear even a fraction about the "goings on," that's going on here. If everyone knew what happened day in, day out in Chicago, they'd never set foot inside the city limits. There would have to be a new highway built to completely bypass Chicago because out of towners would avoid it like Beirut. The only thing confusing to me is how policemen and firemen got categorized with the rich politicians and sports figures. While they’re all good jobs, especially during an economic downturn, the police and fire departments certainly aren’t overpaid and I can’t believe anyone would consider them “rich.”

The two programs are eons away from each other. Rita is way way way better and well coached. Marist is a girly mixed bag 90210 school. Do you want a man made of your boy or a metro-sexual? Hit em high hit low go Rita go!

WHAT??? Is this the 1950's. Come join us in the 21st century. This comment sounds like it's from someone who was probably picked on in school.

Of course St. Rita will deny the fact that a freshman pleaded guilty to a sex offense. They are allowing him to continue going there for free on top of it all. They have a bleeding heart for this boy and his family. I know both families, the victum's and the attackers. I can not give out the name of the boy in order to protect the victum and her family.
Shame on St Rita for allowing him to stay in school and expelling kids for having a drink on the weekend.
I hope all of you parents think long and hard before you send your child to St Rita. Since you do have to pay full tuition.

Do you know the facts ??? Do you really know the facts ??? So what do YOU want to do ?? Expel him ... yes lets do that ... Because that WILL help him after all ... No lets burn him at the stake ... or lets stone him him to death as Irish and English ancestors did in the old days. No my friend the key to this question is WHY did he do this thing? And what can be done from keeping from him doing this again. You want him out of St. Rita, and cast where? Where would you suggest??? Mo Po?? No, lets put him somewhere where he cannot hurt anyone ... Lock him in a cave somewhere... banish him from the neighborhood I say. If you know who this boy is, then I say run and hide ... something made him do what he did and that is the real question. Currently you have 13 registered Sex Offenders in 60655, one is still in Illinois Dept. of Corrections / 3 are sexual predators, look them up at http://www.isp.state.il.us/sor/offenderlist.cfm ... I do not have all the answers to this problem... and neither do you ... but unless you have a solution ... you need to stop the hate mongering and Rita bashing... and to Jim McMahon, I was not implying that police or firemen are rich, But that rich people are media targets.

My gut feeling is that this whole St. Rita sex offender story is a fabrication.

The first time I saw the post, I got the impression that it was written by the same poster who (weeks ago on this blog) questioned the quality of St. Christina's academic program. (There was a similar unmistakable whiney tone to both posts).

I think the poster is just some Catholic school basher with an axe to grind. If she is so knowledgeable, she should provide names, dates, locations, specific acts, names of police officers involved, court dates and court locations, etc.

The police cannot provide the kid's name, but a civilian can provide it IF THE STORY IS TRUE. (The truth is always a defense to a Defamation claim).

Stop slandering Rita on here about a fictional story. Tere are too many people on here spreading non-sense. DONT SEND YOUR KID THEE THEN, period. Make no mistake, Rita is the top sports school in this area. The campus is un-real and the field is awesome

Wow !!! Genius what's your answer ??? If you were paying attention ... I said his identity could not be revealed because he/they are juveniles. And of course play the race card. Because that solves everything. Maybe someone from Special Victims could post the statistical breakdown of sex offenders by race for this poster. I think it would be 1. African American 2.Hispanic
3. White. or better yet go the the sex offender website and select Chicago and you count them up yourself. And what your answer be. I remember a case concerning a star basketball player at a westside high school who was 16 and who "juiced" his 9 yr. old neighbor. Made to Division One College on scholarship. Never made the papers. Gee wonder what race he was ?? And lets not forget the great Teddy Grubbs who played for Depaul during the Ray Meyer era. Poor guy could not stop playing with himself in the library. If front of the girls ... he got a full ride too. What a hypocrite. It affects every race, creed, and religion. Wake Up ...

The Catholic Church covered up the adult rapists, why wouldn't they cover up for one that is a kid.

I have yet to here anyone say I hope the little girl is ok or I will keep the little girl and her family in my prayers tonight. No, everyone is quick to dismiss this because St. Rita is supposedly a great school and a great sports program. How many people actually went there went there when it was in the ghetto? Not many, everyone from around here went to either Br. Rice Mt. Carmel or Marist. But now that it is just on the edge of the ghetto and your kids are back in the safe part of town in a mile now Rita is some great school. Face the facts your kid goes to school a molester, someone who took advantage of a young girl repeatedly and still lives a normal life (i.e. goes to a good school, gets to participae in after school activities and go around unknown.) While this little girl has to cope with ordeal for the rest of her life. But so what St. Rita has no metro-sexuals or girls from 90210...Just a rapist.

. Agreed. There sure are alot of "catholic bashers" on here. maybe just the same two people, not sure. Scary though. I got the feeling they would not feel the same bashing Jews or Muslims!Catholics are fair game by hollywood and the fair and great Omedia (obama owns them now so I call them the omedia)

they are not catholic bashers....they are bashing a school that is letting a child molestor staying in the school..

dont you understand

It is not catholic bashing, it is the fact that a school is allowing a sex offender to attend. It so happens to be St. Rita. My problem with this whole situation is the boy who did this unthinkable act is NOT getting the prof. help he needs. What will keep him from duing this again? Nothing!
The little girl still remains the victum. Our jud. system has failed her also. The sex offender is protected because of his age.
It seems most people like St Rita is sticking up for the sex offender and making this sweet little girl the victum all over again.
Any of you with daughters, what would you do if this happened to YOUR daughter? Your hands are tied because of the jud. system will not allow you to give out his name.
Quit denying this happened and keep this little girl in your prayers.

I cann't believe all of the police bashing. I do not have any family members who are police officers but I feel they deserve more respect and better pay. Anyone who is bashing them would you do their job? You couldn't pay me enough to do that kind of work.
I'm sure it is also hard on their spouses and children every time they go off to work. I could never be married to a police officer because I would worry from the time they left until the time they got home.
Thank you, to all of the police officers! I hope you get a GREAT raise soon.

the Rita kid is not a lie. He will not be traveling to Italy with the band however. The school is obviously protecting him and tehmselves. The incident occured 3 years ago when the student was in 6th grade. He is a molester. If you want a name, ask around SJF, most people know who he is.

Anonymous said...

Do you honestly think the blog owner would allow the name to be released, putting him/her self at risk.. If you are so offended picket the school bit also picket Sutherland because they too have a 8th grade molester. The same SA that prosecuted the Rita kid is prosecuting this kid. I do the Rita kid, I know his home circumstances and I know the situation with the Sutherland kid. You can bury your head in the sand if you want, that is your choice, but the fact remains that this has occured in our neighborhood, in my parish. I know who the boy is and no I won't allow my son to hang out with him and yes, I would speak up if some kid I know where to accept a dance date or such with him Do I think he has a right to his privacy? No, but his victim does and I am not willing to risk being sued to please strangers on a blog. Ask around SJF, you'll quickly learn his identity.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure everyone of these high schools has a child molester (caught or not caught, public or catholic). I can step out my house and throw a rock at TWO registered sex offenders houses! What can I do? move? sure, and where do I go where there aren't more? These are the registered ones over 18 that I know about...how many more are there? I read something a few months ago that there are over 100,000 unregistered sex offenders in Illinois. I educate my children about this issue and "stranger danger," but we cannot live under a rock. And of course my prayers go to this little girl and ALL victims of the same sort of crime. My question is though, what about child abuse or spousal abuse??? What about the woman whose husband comes home and beats the crap out of her and the kids? Is that okay because he's the neighbor and over 18??? Does anyone ever call the cops on their neighbor for that? Probably not.

Anonymous said...

Illinois, especially Chicago has become a "safe-haven for all types of illegal activity, that's why crime runs rampant here. Sanctuary city thanks to out liberal leaders. The criminal is protected more than the victim, and in court the victim is sometimes made to look as if they provoked the attacker, that is why so many rape victims refuse to report the crime because of the humiliation they receive in court. Feel sorry for the misguided? BULL, they know what they are doing and know they will get away with it because of their age, race, gender, etc. They are very keen when it come to the law and because of our liberal society and judges their crimes go unpunished. So next time you go into the voting booth, keep this in mind and vote out the ones that allow this to happen. Things are out of hand now and will only get worse unless he act and act quickly.

Dear Open Truth, This blog is a open forum where people can express their opinons and concerns. Some might not meet your approval but thats called freedom of speech. I agree some comments may be a bit harsh but most of us are not college grads. with a degree in expressive writing, we just speak our minds. We are all middle-class Americans that work hard for what we have, a nice house, a school system that we can send our kids to without fear, a neighborhood that we can walk, day or night, without worry. When these things become threatened, we begin to show concern. Where else can most of us go? If you are so concerned about truth, as your title suggests, then sit back and enjoy this blog, then you won't lose any sleep.

I know both families involved. What the above man's comment claims has been thrown way out from what really happened. Wonder why no one prays for the girl/family? Because you talk down on a catholic school. What was it you said..."they can burn in HELL" It seems prayers wouldn't affect you. You may not think it, but some of us know who brought up this topic on this blog. Yes, it is a bad thing that happened, and Yes, I will keep both kids in my prayers, but the Judicial system didn't fail her as you claimed...It went to court and was settled. What, are you not satisfied? Obviously not, because the personal vendetta you have seems to be whats controlling your comments on this blog. Its over, ok? It's over. You have nothing better to do but get up at 4:00am everyday and talk bad about a teen and a school? The school wouldn't let him stay if they weren't providing some professional help for him. Why don't you think at all? You speak so bad about this teen at Rita, yet you continue to enroll a kid at Sutherland....what about their 8th grader?

At no point did I say "burn in hell" to anyone. Sorry that you don't like me getting home from work at 4:00 a.m upsets you but not everyone works mon-fri 9-5. Also, I have no kids so therefore I don't send anyone to Sutherland, I don't even know where it is. If the school if the school is getting him help, fine, I hope the victim gets help, too. If no one prays for the girl/family because what I say about the Catholic Church then your priorities are out of whack. All I did was comment on posts about this subject from previous weeks.

BY NEIL STEINBERG Sun-Times Columnist
Opening shot...

Being a charitable sort, I think of religion as neutral; you can do with it what you wish, for good or for evil. That's true for all religions -- some Muslims were inspired by their faith to build Istanbul's beautiful Blue Mosque, others were inspired to blow up the World Trade Center. Some Jews were inspired by their faith to pen the sublime Talmud, others to write the droning "Dreidel Song."

Neil Steinberg

That's just a fact, you can't really argue about it, except of course for the ooo-you-touched-me, ooo-I'm-injured swoon zealots do whenever you puff cool, dispassionate reason over the raw, festering wounds of their belief.

E-mails geysered up last Friday, an Old Faithful blast of opinion, after I wrote about the cardinal, the president and Notre Dame. For those reading this online in 2033, the leaders of Notre Dame, under the impression they are a big university like any other and not an overgrown parochial school, invited the president of the United States to be their commencement speaker.

He accepted.

But rather than bask in the glow of reflected power, the "men in funny hats," as one reader dubbed them, vented their displeasure and stirred up protest, because Obama reversed the Bush administration's restrictions on stem cell research and supports a woman's right to run her own body.

The e-mail outpouring bracingly reflects the complexity of Catholic reality in 2009. Stop the presses, but they don't all have 12 kids, they don't all skip meat on Fridays, they don't sit cross-legged at the feet of the cardinal waiting for him to concede that, yes, OK, the Earth might indeed revolve around the sun. Most of the students at Notre Dame welcome Obama; most Catholic voters cast their ballot for him.

A few e-mail writers, alas, do seem to assume that everybody's opinion flows solely from hatred, the way it does for them, and to believe that to register an opinion on a Catholic issue that isn't written in Latin is to "bash" it. And, needless to say, No Jews Allowed. Or as J.P.N. wrote:

"A guy named Steinberg trashing the Catholic Church. What a surprise."

It's hard to be offended by that, not when the writer uses his full name, and you realize he doesn't even have the good sense to be ashamed. (I substituted his initials, because he eventually apologized, after I made clear the error of his ways; I like to be kind, even to the undeserving).

The irony is that I'm more positive about the church, generally, than many Catholics are, perhaps because I'm free from both the thorny blessing of a Catholic upbringing and from any residual belief in the teachings, so can guiltlessly gape at the marvels it has wrought, from The Divine Comedy to the Sistine Chapel to Misericordia.

Frankly, after a few e-mails like Michael Fox's -- "Please notify me when the Grand Wizard of the KKK is next invited to speak at the NAACP or the Jewish Anti-Defamation League" -- I began to suspect this flap isn't really about the Catholic church so much as it's about anti-abortion fanaticism, which is definitely not a Catholic monopoly, but cuts across the Christian sects.

Of course they'd turn on Obama, for failing the simple zero-or-one test that is the entire extent of their political thought. Either you support their fantasy about going back to some imagined Eden where women took their gynecological instructions from the church and the government, or you're a blood-drenched murderer who can be treated with a full blast of the compressed contempt that is built up inside them.

Rather than give examples -- trust me, they're nasty; having exhausted their small store of compassion on the fetuses of women they've never met, they often have none left for actual human beings who disagree with them, politically -- I'd prefer to end with this exceptional message, from a physician in Grayslake. It is, as they say in Latin, sui generis -- a thing unto itself:

"I am a Catholic, Pro-Life, Notre Dame grad, and I agree with you regarding Obama's visit to Notre Dame. If Catholics are so strongly pro-life, what better opportunity for a 'teaching moment' with the Prez; Our attitude should be, if we are so passionate about this, let's use this moment to touch the [president's] heart. . . . He is quoted as saying that knowing when life begins is 'above his pay grade.' Maybe we can educate him."

That attitude of respect, the feeling that one should explain and persuade rather than complain and condemn, is alien to those who would wield their faith as a club.

I urged the doctor to let me use his name, to add weight to his remarks, but he wouldn't, he said, because he deals with Catholic organizations and fears retribution. How sad is that, when extremism boldly signs its name, while moderation hides?

Today's chuckle . . .

Friday night I took in "Rod Blagojevich, Superstar," Second City's delicious skewering of our wacky former governor. Joey Bland had Rod nailed from the moment he paused to shake hands and make earnest eye contact with each and every audience member in the front row. Many good lines -- "That stupid truth they keep reporting about us," a frantic, foul-mouthed Patti Blagojevich wails, "it makes us look bad."

My favorite quip was when Rod, desperately trying to rationalize extorting money from Roland Burris, says:

"There was a time in this country when the bribes of a woman or a person of color wouldn't be taken seriously -- not in my administration!"

I like the part where he starts to explain that he really is a nice guy.
