The CPD did a good job yesterday. They seemed to be deployed differently.

1900 - At an A.L. meeting in Chicago, Ban Johnson announces that an A.L. team will be placed in the Windy City to ensure the stability of the league. Other franchises are in Kansas City, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo. In an agreement with Chicago N.L. officials, the A.L. club will be situated on the south side of the city and will be permitted to use the nickname White Stockings, formerly used by the N.L. team. However, the White Stockings will not be able to use the word Chicago in their official name.

Baseball holds so much of the past, pulls me back to it each year, to the soothing unclocked unrolling of the innings, to the sound of an announcer through an open car in May, the sweet attenuations of late summer afternoons, my father bringing us Ted Williams's autograph, my brother, his ear to the radio, suffering a late-season loss. The sound of cleats on an asphalt drive, a bat cracking a ball, delirious cheers for the team that's held me in thrall all my life, the raw power of its line-up, the charisma of the Green Wall. Batting averages, home runs, earned run averages, absorbed unwittingly over the seasons, call out ot surprise me in easy conversation with strangers, in a southern city, in a stadium, in spring.

Yesterday's Parade was a sucess for some ... and ugly for other's... The Police I saw were flying around breaking up fight's and the underage drinking and disrespect to people's property was and should be unforgivable ... It's one thing to have a few beer's but some of these kids were so drunk that one yound man fell and hit his head on the edge of the curb ... Is that fun ??? On 115th St. it was total no parking for residents on that street ... well you know why ??? So the buses from the northside bars could have a place to park !! The Placards were from Durkins Bar, The Wrightwood Tap, and McKee's. These young people exited the buses and began to run into people's gangways to unrinate. One girl even was taking a dump. The language was unrepeatable. One bus driver even warned a lady to be careful when picking up plastic cups because they contained urine not beer. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE SPIRIT OF THE PARADE WAS INTENDED TO BE !!! It was mean't to be an enjoyable day for families ... Nothing wrong with having a few beers and enjoying Friends and family ... But it is turning into nothing more than a drunkfest. I would call on the alderman to do the following for next year. No Bars allowed to be open until 1 hr after the parade ends from 111th to 119th St. 4 o'clock would be a good time. No Buses or parking for buses allowed. If you are going to allow them. Then designate an area as not to interfere with the residents. Charge a parking fee, say $200.00 dollars a bus to keep the riff raff away. Again I am not anti party ... I was at a house party where all had an enjoyable time ... we had a few beers, ate lots of good food, and enjoyed the day ... but looking at what was happening around the neighborhood made me wonder if this is all worth it ...

Dear Village Voice, Now you know what it is like living by Mt.Greenwood Park. You have it only ONE day a year, try it spring, summer and fall. Softball teams have St. Paddy's Day all summer long!!!!

Sorry inandaround60655 for causing people to leave the blog ... One the season starts I will be done anyway ... The main reason I put the baseball facts and have the countdown is primarily because its get people thinking about the warmer weather, good times at the ballpark, whether it be Sox Park, Wrigley Field, or just your plain old neighborhood little league. To me there is nothing like the smells of Sox Park on Opening Day ... The aroma of the brats and hot dogs cooking, the smell of the onions, The taste of the beer, (somehow beer always tastes better at the ballpark) no matter the cost we gladly force the money into the vendors hand. The look on the kids faces when they know they are missing school for a memory that will never be forgotten. I remember the very first time I took my son to the opener. He was seven years old in the second grade at St. Christina. I did not tell him we were going to the ballgame. It was a 3 o'clock game. I showed up at school office at about 11 and told the principal and the secretary the plan. He was called to the office and when he arrived he looked at me said "What's wrong Dad?" I told him that is was too nice a day for school and that I took off work (A day much like today, when the sun is so bright it hurts your eyes). I said "Do you want to stay in school or go to the White Sox Opener?" No need to tell you the reply. How much money or value can you put on a smile that big. I do not the answer to that question. But it is a tradition we have repeated every year since. He is now 14 and about to enter High School, which I know is going to be a little more serious than grade school. He may make a sports team and the coach may not go along with tradition. But hopefully we will be able to carry on. And someday, when he has his own son, he'll show up in school on Opening Day and ....

Life's too short, maybe the people that left found somewhere else to whine. You are fine, and one still has free will to skip your post if they want to, but it is probably more to their liking to bitch. You are harmless and entertaining. And I am not really a baseball fan.

Thanks 1050am we did deploy a bit differently, and if you noticed a difference good for both you and us, but after 25 years of working this event, it's time has come...I too live and work in the neighborhood, and am more disgusted year after year...You could have had every CPD Officer on duty working this "family parade" and it still would have not mattered.

The Ward Office seems to think that it is a great event and that there are no problems....Please express your concerns to save our neighborhood

I will let the ward office know, maybe it will take one of you guys getting hurt to make the ward office know it's gotta go. Thanks for all you guys do.

do away with the parade. I stopped on Kedzie a 16 year old laying on curb at 109th covered in vomit.

Why doesnt any one remember the fatals from the parade? Four people killed over five years, at 115th and Central (2) dui offender coming from St. Walters, the man on the bike at 111th and central, dui offender from Countryside, the dui on the motor bike killed himself and I believe there was one more. May they all rest in peace, but for the goood of the community lets stop this now.

You Irish folk better keep the parade alive as long as you can because in the near future you will be marching in the St. Obama Day Parade. Remember, according to the polls, the majority of you voted for him. By the way, HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY to everyone, enjoy it while you can!!!

With regards to the political people, they may be out of touch on this issue. They are busy at the parade and dont see whats going on between western and kedzie during and after the parade.

I hope others take your heed and let the Ward Office know that this is out of hand....we expect to get hurt..... not your daughter, neice, toddler, pre-teen.....by a drunk either from the neighborhood or not...There is only so much "X-Amount of Police" can do versus 350K "Revelers"

WRONG. 60655 was the only area Obama didn't carry. I am 60655 and voted for Obama. I was waiting for some disinfranchised to play the race card, thanks for obliging. You wanna keep the parade, go back to making the drunks dump their coolers, and start charging HUGE fines.

How could the city ever handle the olympics, we can't handle suburbanites, wait till we get eurotrash.

1942 - Two black players, Jackie Robinson and Nate Moreland, request a tryout with the Chicago White Sox during spring training at Pasadena. Manager Jimmy Dykes allows the two to work out but later dismisses them.

How Many People Knew That ????

1984 - White Sox coach Charlie Lau, renowned hitting instructor, dies at age 50 after a long bout with cancer. Lau, whose major league average was .255, earned his fame as the Royals batting coach from 1971-78, where his star pupil was George Brett.

This one is for those "around" 60655. There is a blog for parents of students in St. Catherine's school. I guess there have been some conflict between the parents and the principal over there.

Thanks "60655" and keep up the good work.

o the person who gave the blogspot for the St.Catherine issues could you please find out the real blogspot as this web address does not work. I'm really interested in the issues they are having as I'm trying to decide there or MT. Greenwood.

OK, it is Spring 2009! Where's Walgreen's? Can we expect another delay in the decade old promise of a signature corner?

There is a Benefit Party this Saturday, 03/21/09 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Bourbon Street. It is being held for a young Oak Lawn woman by the name of Becky Clifford who was tragically paralyzed last June in a fall outside of her home. I'm asking EVERYONE to all come together for a worthwhile cause and come to this event in support for this fine woman and her family. She really needs our help and support, so let's show Chicago what the Southwest Side is all about, and how we take care of our neighbors. Also please be kind enough to pass this on to your friends, relatives and neighbors........Thanks

I want to know why St. Rita H.S. still has a teenage sex offender still is school. Many students have been expelled for under age drinking or fighting and the sex offender comes out smelling like a rose.
As a mother of daughters I am outraged that nothing has been done! Our community needs to be aware of all sex offenders. With small daughters, I want to feel safe in our community.
Why St Rita condones this behavior I'll never understand!

Well of course St Rita accepts a sex offender. Isn't that the way of the catholic religion? Maybe he is in training to become a priest or brother.

You claim to know a great deal about what goes on at St. Rita.

What's this kid's name? What specifically was he accused of doing? Does he even live in Mt. Greenwood?

Exactly how many kids have been expelled from Rita for drinking or fighting?

Put up or shut up! I'm guessing that you have absolutely no facts to back up your statements.

If you have small daughters I advise you to keep a close watch on them!

The police can't give out the name of a juvenile, but there's nothing to stop you from giving it out if your statements are factual. But I really have serious doubts about the truth of your statements.

The days of lynch mobs are over. What do you want us to do as neigborhood? St. Rita won't give up the name of the kid, you won't tell us who it is, and frankly I can't find anything about this anywhere. It's not that we don't care, but what do you want us to do? Hunt down every teenage boy in the area?

With no information, there is nothing to discuss, bottom line.

The posters statements are true. I'm a 3rd party to your bickering disbelief. Believe it, or do like so many others and close your shades and your eyes and pretend nothing bad is happening outside in your perfect little world. There are actually 2 sex offenders, him being one of them, and one other that live very close to one another, EXTREMELY close to St. John Fisher school. One assaulted a girl and the other assaulted a boy. Both stories are true. But hey, who am I to make a believer out of you. Close your shades and your eyes. And oh, by the way I cannot give out either of their names. Catch my drift?

Anonymous said...

We live in the day and age of the offender being protected, like he's the victim. It is horrible that we can't post names of juveniles to let everyone know what kind of kid lives next door like we can adults. You may not see it this way, but by posting what you can on this blog, the word is getting out, in a twisted kind of way. Get my drift? A blog is the best kind of forum, because you won't see your information in the paper. My eyes and blinds are open, but as one person, my hands are tied. Your voice is heard.

I don't know anything about a second offender but I do know the freshman drummer from St. Rita is a recent graduate of St. John Fisher and lives very near SJF. It is true that he molested a child a few years ago but due to our justice system, he was recently brought into court. I have heard conflicting stories about the outcome, one being that he was cleared of all charges and one that he was convicted as a juvenille. Not sure of the actual outcome. If anyone knows for certain I would appreciate an update. As for a second molester, that is new to me and I would appreciate any news on that also

Anonymous said...

Yes I know it's a true fact that a freshman at St. Rita H.S. was charged as a juvinile sex offender. I would like to know what steps the principle of St. Rita is going to take. I believe the parents have a right to know what is going on in their school. If any of your faculty has a daughter, granddaughter or neice, how would they feel if you have a sex offender in your school?
