Year Round Schools

I was reading an article the other day that got me thinking about year round schools. The article talked out the different programs that the CPS and Park District were going to do over the clean up week (this week) to keep kids out of trouble (in certain areas). Do you seriously have to keep them busy for a week to keep them from killing each other??? What is the CPS going to do when they are off for 2 MONTHS STRAIGHT for summer???

There are quite a few CPS schools that are year round. They work on different schedules, so some may have 3 weeks off in November, while some schools are in session. They still do the same amount of days of school, just different break schedules.

Now I will be happy when, next week, my kids will be home on Easter break. No school lunches to make, don't have to worry about uniforms, etc. Woo-hoo! However, a week or two is all I need and want because then I am ready for them to go back to school...See ya later, don't let the door hit you on the way out! Seriously, get out, you're driving me nuts!!!

Personally, and this is my opinion only, I would rather send my kids to school year round. I think they will retain more knowledge with shorter breaks, it would make it easier for parents to arrange daycare, etc.

What do you think. Public or Catholic. Would you prefer year round rather then the straight 10 month calendar our schools have now in 60655?

This will cause more problems for the police that have to babysit these Cps animals as they fight and beat each other all over the southside. Daley just wants to keep em locked in the "safehaven" school all day so that the homicide rate doesnt rise. His olympic dream is so near, he cant keep having inner city kids murdered, lock em up in school all year.

The school year in the U.S. is based on an archaic system that was designed so kids could work the family farm during summers. Most countries have gone to year-round curriculums, but the U.S. system, which is dominated by the largest union in the country, refuses to make our schools competitive.

It would work easily enough - every 12 weeks are split - 9 weeks of school and 3 weeks off. Teachers would get the same time off, they just wouldn't get their summer vacation all at once. Countries following this schedule are way ahead of us in every subject.

As long as the biggest Daley- & Obama-supporting union refuses to cooperate, we will continue to fall behind. 4 or 5 times every summer I come home to see my useless overpaid liberal twerp schoolteacher neighbor sitting next to a table of empty beer bottles. He laughs at me in my uniform and yells that he became a teacher for 3 reasons: June, July & August.

YOU. The Dummycrats love new and fun ideas that limit your income. Funny 90 percent of the programs we fund are not even for the working class whitey. I never used a public school in my life, yet I have paid for them forever. My kids ahve health care from my job, yet I pay for Illinois kids to get theirs. I hate the Sox , yet I paid for the new staduim to be built. I dont like GM or own one, yet I pay for them now, as well as warrant them. TEA PARTY TIME FOLKS

Cps can have year round school, but I see many problems with funding and families. Many Hispanics go back to Mexico (their real love, their home)and take the kids with them for weeks and months, they wont like that. The security and police that are used to contain these schools, if you want to call them that, is un-real! Most are more like...prison camps. daley can give a rats ass about scores. He will gain somehow from this. Federal monies will double.

Interesting idea. Supposedly same cost. My friend it ST. Louis (60655 transplant loves it). Call me old fashioned, some of my best memories were that long summer break, and looking forward to it.

I agree, we would only be changing things to babysit the animals...rewarding their bad behavior. It makes it hard to look at this objectively for me

I heard a rumor that Mt. Greenwood School is considering go year round. Any truth to that?

Its kind of sickning that our fearless leaders, congress and the pres as well as daley like to constantly measure us up to their hero's the Chinese. Daley "China has high scores, they go to to school year round" They also have sweat shops and slave labor. We are Americans we need a break

That's the problem, we as Americans are always on break....I want everything for nothing...I want full day's pay for 3 hours of work, because I need my break.

I posted this as to 60655 schools only. This poll and post does not pertain to the rest of the City. If Clissold, Cassell, Mt. Greenwood, etc., the Catholic grammar schools and all the high schools in 60655 went year round, the "animal" issue is irrelevant. I am talking scores and such. I meant babysitting issues as to our younger kids. I have always been a working mother and summer day care was the hardest to find. Hope that clarifies what I was meaning. Thanks!

Then home school your kids the rest of the year! Leave us alone!

I have friends who teach here in the city - year round. They love it because their breaks are split up throughout the year. The kids also retain more and therefore, scores go up.

Problem, they are on tracks - tracks are the sessions they arein school (i.e. what days they will rotate) schools will have multiple tracks depending on the number of students. Some families may have their children on different tracks which would make for a nightmare to have your children on different vacation schedules. I don't know if this can be worked around.

That will be another reason for St. Christina to gouge us working folks some more.

Anonymous said...

What do us working moms do with our kids for 3 weeks at at time?.....

How did we manage to retain and get good test scores?.....

Anonymous said...

what do you do with them now for the two weeks at Christmas? How do you manage the 2 1/2 months in the summer?

We didn't retain much after summer has the first month to two months of school is review of what you learned the prior year.

St. Christina is the cheapest Catholic school in the neighborhood tuition wise. They also do not have mandatory fundraising nor do you have to sell so much in Manna/Trip or make up the difference. Your getting off cheap for a Catholic school.

Absolutelty no truth to Mt Greenwood School going year round.

Why have kids if you cannot care of them? Work out your family scheduling on your own time and not on the school's time. NO to year round schooling!

I agree with the last guy, no to year round "daycare" schooling! Some parents actually love theri kids and love to be with them for extended periods of time.

So, because I think year round school is better, I must want the school to babysit them and I don't love them. Hmmm, maybe I could come back with the fact that I love them more because I want them to retain what they learn and idle brains make for idle hands. Do you work? If so, then are you really spending more quality time with them when they are not in school versus when they are?

The point is that it is a preference, there is no wrong or right. It's horrible for someone to say that I must love my kid's less because I don't like spending every minute with them. Besides, I have teenagers, they don't want to spend time with me either :)

I respect your opinion, I respectfully disagree though. Many many parents HATE the summer and moan about what they will do with their kids. Why did you have them if they are such a burden? Not you personally but those that moan. I loved summer baseball , riding my bike with my pals, many lessons were learned and great friends made on summer days.

inandaround60655 said...

That's why I love this country, you have the right to disagree. Year round schools still get summer break to enjoy, but it's 6 weeks instead of 10. I have my memories too, but I remember being bored by the end of July. I think we get comfortable in our memories. Habits are hard to break, ;)

i bet the overpaid teacher comes home and says i hate my useless, grummpy, negative, pathetic copper neighbor.

at least the teacher has three good reasons why he went into the field that he did...what are your three? 1. my grandpa was a cop. 2. my dad was a cop. 3. carrying a gun makes me feel like a big guy!

you are probably jealous that you are not off all of june, july and august!

Your right....ease up... nobody loves their children more or less because of their choice in a blog question. Silly people, nice some can still get their Christina bashing in.... everyone has a choice.

I sincerely hope you are NOT a teacher if you think June, July & August are 3 good reasons to become one!

My grandfather was a fireman & my dad died in Vietnam. Carrying a gun is more a burden than anything else but you wouldn't know because you are scared of those who DO carry one.

Somehow I suspect you've gotten a ticket before or your spouse has called the cops on you. Don't fret small thinker, I'll still serve and protect you anyway.

To many kids out there are being raised by someone else's parents. Are you working to provide for your family or are you working to avoid raising your family? It is your choice for whatever reasons but don't make the rest of us change because of your choices. We choose to raise and spend time with our kids. They are only kids for a short window of time. Cats and the Cradle......

I don't get it...this was a thought, an opinion. I AM NOT MAKING ANYONE CHANGE. Maybe the above comment was not directed to me, but I am going to answer it. I do spend time with my kids, lots of time actually, I also coach a sport, I care about what and where my kids are at all times and I know the names of all my kids' friends, yes, I do work fulltime to SUPPORT my kids and to PAY for their schooling. Who the heck actually works to avoid their family???? I am committed to my family, my kids and my community (hence, this blog). Ease up a little and stop pointing fingers. This post was meant more for information and/or opinions. I may be a little snappy and I apologize, but I am a damn good mother and was highly offended that you would suggest otherwise.

Now we can add working mom's to the 60655 bashing lists....
coppers
firemen
unions
teachers
St Christina
Rugai (although she deserves it, she uses mapquest when she HAS to make an appearance in 60655)
and inner city kids (not that most of our kids have ever seen one, they just act like them)

Wow we are a productive lot... and truly helping 60655

Some people are never happy unless they are kicking the dog and thumping their chests. I think no matter what, if we post the sky is blue, someone will argue that it is green.

I post the comments, even the one's I do not agree with. Here's a little about me and you will see that for the most part, I post and keep my comments to myself. My husband is a cop, some of my really good friends are teachers and firemen, I'm a working mom and I still have one at St. Christina. I try to stay out of all comments. I did not start this blog as my personal webpage. This is for IN AND AROUND 60655, I think with the exception of some whom we can never please, we are all really pretty good people.

wasn't saying you are condoning bashing, yes you gotta post what you gotta post, and you are doing a good job....my comment was for the "at large" population that gotta hate to live.....you're right we have a great group of people in the area.

Any word on Walgreen's corner and on the Salv. Army buiding?

Nippsy Russell said...

111th & Kedzie is finished isn't it? Come on, am I the only person that is convinced that this corner is never gonna happen. Fat Tommy's has been closed for a month, and the other three store fronts next Burger king have been vacant months before that. They still haven't torn down the buildings, so what is it this time? Relocating the cock roaches and rodents to a safer environment? This crap is laughable at this point. I don't want too see any posts defending our piss poor politicians on this issue. If it were a park, strip mall, street lighting, concrete planters with automatic watering systems, more strip malls, lobbying for franchises such as fat burger to open a store or building a new fire house for Beverly it would get done. And is has. All but the Fat burger. So you can cram all the kind words about the wonderful 19th ward leadership. Cram it, cram it and then cram it some more, you dopes. Jeez I ain't done that for a while.

Does anyone know what the plans are for the park off 107th and Spaulding? They are in the process of re-doing it. Will there be a water fountain for the kids to play in, like it used to have?

Anonymous said...

There was an article in last weeks Beverly Review. Some company is testing out some new playing surface and is donating the surface to the park. They are putting in all new swings, climbing things, slides, etc. Don't know about a sprinkler. Not sure if this company is also paying for the equipment and installation or what. Listed it as a 500,000 upgrade, seems very expensive for that little playlot though

I like the idea of a year round school. My kids are always looking for a break once in a while; I think they would get more out of school if they had more breaks....with the long summer they forget what they learned the year before. This would be great to get away on vacations as well..."city worker"...don't get the perfect summer vacation to spend with the kids.
