A drunk driver crashed his car on the 108 block of scramento yesterday (Sunday)into the train tracks and into a hydrant. He tried to run away but an off duty ran out of his house and grabbed him. Beat 2293 showed up and took him in. He didn't look to be from MT Grennwood

If we all sent our kids to the AG school it would be like Mt Greenwood school. Why are we not taking advantage of this. Who wants to pay 10,000 dollars a year for Catholic school? I talked to the cop and teachers who work there and they said the school is great,no gang bangers or problems!

Anonymous said...

better take beano!

Anonymous said...

Because the Ag school only takes 30% from our own neighborhood. If we could take the school as our own, I'm sure they would be at full capacity with a waiting list! People are struggling to make Catholic school tuition at $8,000 + and then books, transport and uniforms.

Anonymous said...

To the person that complained that the AG school only took 30% neighborhood students.

30% of the student population would be about 200 students from the neighborhood. So unless you have applied for your student to go there and have been rejected don't keep saying that they can't get in.

Every student that applied from Cassell last year are students there.

Anonymous said...

The Ag School has no gang bangers or problems? That is a laugh! Whereever you are getting that information from they are lying. Just like any other High School around the City or in the Suburbs, they too do have lots of problems with drugs, guns coming into the school, and other foreign objects that could hurt one! YOu do know that the students walk through a metal dectector every day. And the crap that does go to the Ag school from other neighborhoods still dress like thugs with their pants hanging off their butts, the chicks with their skirts so high that they can't cover their butts and all the other dress issues. If the High schools, especially the Ag,school would put the kids back into standard uniforms, I might take in consideration to send my child their when the times comes!

Whoever said the Ag School has no gangbangers or thugs must be talking about another school. Come by after school lets out and see the crap that hangs out in front of Wiseguy's Pizza and tell me there are no thugs or gangbangers at the AG School. The principal of that school could care less what those kids do "across the street" because they're not on school property so it is not his problem. I feel sorry for the guys running Wiseguy's because they have to put up with the "crap" that comes out of that school. And I'm probably going to be called racist for saying this, but it seems all the problem kids that hang out over there are not from this neighborhood. And I'm sure you all know who I mean too. I'm not being racist I'm just living in the real worldwhen I make these comments

Mary Carol said...

Hey know-it-all. There were students from Mt. Greenwood who didn't get in and parents had to fight for awhile to make it happen. 200 hundred is nothing compared to the # of students from the area that currently attend Catholic HS.
Read slowly: IF the Ag school was open for ONLY neighborhood kids, it would be overflowing. How can you dispute that??????

It is not racist at all, it is FACT!!
The majority of the student body there is NOT from our neighborhood

Just asking, but would there be enough kids per class level? Say the typical freshman class is 500. If each school in the area has 60 graduates and EVERY single kid went to the ag school, we may actually just be about 100 shy of the 500. A few of the schools in the area have 1/2 suburban living kids, like St. Catherine and Queen of Martyrs and St. John Fisher. Then you take out some of the kids who don't live in the area that attend Keller. Then you take out the kids whose parents actually choose to educate them Catholic. You would still be opening up the school to "outsiders" to fill in the gap. 500 was conservative, most of the public schools are probably class sizes of 700. I went to a Chicago public high school back in the 80's and our freshman class started at 800 (550 by graduation).

I just wish the Ag school was only kids from 60655 that would be great. My kid is in 6th grade. I am between Marist and the Ag school depending on my spose not getting laid off and the kids who attend there. The Ag school only has a total of 600 students compare that to 500 freshmen at St Rita. Is there anyway of turning it into a 60655 school like Mt Greenwood. Who would we have to talk to?

Anonymous said...

From the AG Schools own website:
As of 2008, the largest demographic at CHICAGO AGRICULTURE is African-American. This demographic currently makes up 55.2% of the student population. The second greatest demographic is White at 27.6% , followed by Hispanic at 10.5% .

How many of the 55.2% live in 60655 or in the city of Chicago for that fact?

Anonymous said...

I talked to the cops who work in the school and they only had good things to say. I also talk to teachers and baseball coaches, they also said only nice things to say. I am just saying more kids from 60655 go there the less kids from east of the Ryan will be able to attend. We have a nice school in our area and we should be able to use it. My kid is going to college no matter what school he goes to. It's how the kid is raised that counts black ,white or hispanic

Anonymous said...

I'm sure they're saying that to make it look like they're actually doing their jobs. Deal with these kids out of school, walking down the street, crossing the street whenever and wherever they hell they please, call people on the street names. These people who do work at the school NEVER mingle with these kids after school.

The best is my neighbors slob ass kid who went to all these good years of Catholic High School still lives at home, dropped out of the Prestigious College of UCLA (University Closest to LaGrange Avenue....Moraine Valley for all you morons out there) and still has no job. Glad my kid is still trudging along at Purdue, after his shitty Ag School education. You people are the most uneducated morons I have ever seen in the world. Look at me I am prestigious, I send my kid to Marist, or to Bro Rice.

i dont understand why people want to send their children to the Ag school. to me, its a joke. it is not the same caliber academically as regular high schools and trust me, when u go to college there is a big difference between catholic educated kids and public. in college, you can tell right off the bat who went where. i know from experience. same with high school.

We need to change that 30% to 100% fot the ag school. We pay the taxes for the school, our kids should be able to use it!!!

You should get your head out of your ass and WAKE UP!!!! I guess if you loose your job and your wife's hours get cut back you'll still be able to afford the catholic tuition??? There is nothing wrong with the AG school being the neighborhood school for NEGHIBORHOOD KIDS!!! that means 60655 kids... instead of busing them in... I might remind you that 2 of the more recent graduates were OFFENDERS in one of the more recent murderous killing incidents in the City of Chicago since Richard Speck, the Murder of 5 people at 76th & Rhodes April 2008 were by 2 "AG School graduates" that weren't even close to being from the 60655 zip code....

Anonymous said...

What is so difficult to comprehend. Posters WANT to send their kids to the Ag school, however, only a certain amount of Mt Greenwood citizens are admitted there. IF,IF,IF it became a NEIGHBORHOOD ONLY school, only MT Greenwood/West Beverly citizens could attend there, therefore more parents would send their children there rather than the Catholic High Schools. In other words... We Want It To Be A Neighborhood (60655) School

How come almost every CPS teacher I know send their children to a Catholic school. That has to say something. Daley himself. Also all the engineers, drivers and employees that I know send their children elsewhere.

When teachers don't want to send their own children there. And the rest it is because of money. Can't have the fancy car and summer home if you are paying catholic school tuition. I don't but I prefer the catholic education. It is well worth the money to me.

Just reading the list from an earlier post about over 30 sexual orientations. Is there a category for a local married man who likes to talk bad about his wife in local taverns, while attempting to pick up other married women, telling them his tales of what a good guy he is, just caught in a bad marriage?

Anonymous said...

Could be a dent in the theory that such a man would have his own category. Maybe just an a@@hole with no respect for his wife or the santity of his own or other marriages. Hopefully his wife holds her head up high and realizes the trash he spread about her and their marital problems is false and people realize who the real pr#ck is.

Speaking of the U of C, Mt. Greenwood residents need to be aware of the scholarships available at the U of C for children of Chicago police officers and fire fighters. Many kids who wouldn't ordinarily be able to attend the U of C have benefited from this program.

Hey, all Mt.Greenwood Taxpayers, take a ride by your park, MT.GREENWOOD PARK LAKE/RESERVOIR and see your hard earned tax dollars at work! What a disgrace. Planning a day at the park, forget it unless you bring a raft. Now don't forget to give money to the 19th ward cocktail reception so your dollars can be forwarded to Washington and Jackson Parks for their beautification and care. Wake up residents and revolt on election day and get these BUMS out, there is no excuse for this blatant disregard for us tax-payers who deserve better than what we are getting. STAND UP AND BE HEARD WITH YOUR VOTE.

While I agree with you that Daley is a Jagbag, and the city should not be employing those dopes that write tickets on the bikes, the city cleans the street maybe once a month. You can't find a parking spot across the street for one day a month? I live on a corner lot that has five trees on it and the last couple of times the street cleaner came by, some bung hole was parked in front of my house. That's not such a big deal for folks living in the middle of the block with 30 feet of curb to clean. Some of us corner dwellers have 180 feet to clean. As far as I'm concerned they should tow these mopes.

I went to a huge and predominantly Hispanic public high school, my husband went to Brother Rice. I went on to an Ivy League college, my husband did not go to college.

Mt. Greenwood Public School is by far out performing the Catholic Grammar schools in this area, and 30% of the student body is deemed "special needs". Their scores are factored into the schools' standardized test scores. This is true at Ag as well. Do you think Marist has a Special Education Program in their school that they factor into their ACT scores? They do not. There is the difference in that score discrepancy right there. I think I would be a little disappointed to spend around $35,000 for a 23 on the ACT score, when a 20 is free at Ag The fact of the matter is, the top 25% of the Ag school scores are averaged out to 24.9. This is probably due to our neighborhood kids who attend, so it seems they are going to that "bad" school and outperforming neighborhood kids who attend private schools in the area.
I would hazard a guess that the kids from this neighborhood that attend the Ag School are the ones scoring very high on standardized tests, and this is because parents here care about their education and have taught their kids to value education as well.

In college I could tell the difference between public and privately educated kids, it is true. The private school kids were arrogant and quite often brought back to reality with failing grades, while the public kids went in feeling intimidated, like I did, and worked really, really hard, and graduated with good grades.

You, and you only, determine how much you get out of whatever school you choose to attend.

Not quite. Having served on the LSC I know they are factored out. Does not take away from Mg though. Trust me, they make sure those get pulled. Marist does have the Marcellin kids factored in.

Smackjaw,

I agree children get what they want out of their education. I know a junior at Marist that scored a 35 on his ACT. He was a graduate of St. Christina. Way to go.

Do you think anyone at the Great AG School is scoring a 35. I doubt it.

Anonymous said...

I am not an AG school graduate. I graduated from a Catholic school, but I would like to make a comment to the person that asked about sucess stories. The first graduating class of the AG school are still in their 30's. Their professions are most likely like the rest of us. Policemen, firemen, teachers, CEO's, CFO's, CIT's, Nurses, Doctors, etc. etc. etc.
It's about time we stop bashing the choices of others on how we educate our children. A school that is best suited for your child may not be the one that is best suited for my child. There is no right or wrong, there is just choices.

inandaround60655 said...

This topic of Catholic v. Public has been officially beat to death. You, the individual, make your education. I was CPS high school graduate (my family had no money). I grew up a very big reader and still love to read. I did well and could have gone to college, but I married and started a family young, during an age where parents and schools did not push for college.

I know graduates of both Catholic and Public that graduated grammar school and got into high school barely being able to read or spell. How did the parents not see this, how the teachers not see this? There are good schools and bad, good teachers and bad, good parents and bad. Everyone has a choice. If I couldn't afford to send my kids to Catholic high school, I would be confident that my child would get a good education at the Ag, because I know that I would push him to do well. The teachers are paid to educate your kids, but a good education ALWAYS starts at home.

Anonymous said...

I am a CPS graduate (and a success) and guess what? My family HAD money! It is a fact that public school teachers require a higher level of education to teach in the public schools than those who teach at Catholic schools. Not saying that all Catholic school teachers are under-educated but the Catholic schools are not mandated by the state and public schools are. Don't go saying that kids who go to Catholic schools are better, in any way, that public school kids. That would be a generalization. Education begins at home.

The whole point of this original post was that if the Ag school was opened FIRST to those students in 60655, there would be little room for others. Simply put. It's like Mt. Greenwood school... 10 years ago, I would have done anything I could not to send my kids there because it was a mixture of kids from all over. Now it's not.

The recession forced a lot of families to pull their kids out of the Catholic schools but when the economy turns around, I’ll bet they stay there. That is because they are getting a great education that is being overseen by the state, not just going through the motions like so many (NOT ALL) of the Catholic school kids are just because mommy and daddy keep paying their tuition so they can say they went there. I know of a LOT of absolute delinquents who had their parents busting their tails to pay their Catholic school tuition. I’ll bet they’re glad they did too!

Mt. Greenwood is busting at the seams. As for the poster who came up with some ridiculous number of students, check your facts before you post next time. There are at LEAST 100 students in each grade there and if you add Cassell, Clissold and whatever public schools there are, there would be WAY more than 500 students. Not to mention all of the others who will be leaving the Catholic schools after this semester, and there WILL be more!

I actually had one parent whisper to their child, in complete disgust, that mine goes to Mt. Greenwood but she said “don’t worry honey, a lot of families send their kids to Mt. Greenwood for KDG, I’m SURE they’ll go to Martyrs in 1st grade.” Wrong! Well now, guess who’s kid is ALSO going to Mt. Greenwood?? I’ll bet he’s finally learned to read too!

Children who excel in school or have learning disabilities, who go to Catholic schools get NO special attention, as long as their parents continue to pay their tuition, that is UNLESS they have parents who CARE ENOUGH to be their child’s advocate and get help for them. Guess where they send them for their additional help? You got it, to the public school!

It’s some of the people with the BIGGEST MOUTHS who would NEVER send their kids anywhere but Catholic schools who I see on the schoolyard at Mt. Greenwood now.

Feel free to send your kids to any school you like. If you’re so sure public school is bad, why not home school? We just need to encourage the school board to open the Ag to local kids first. That’s all we’re asking.
