It is clear that, yes, a criminal took the officers gun. But it is also clear that other passerbys,(note plural), helped the officer even to the extent of climbing in to the squad to call for help and filming the criminal,(at great risk!) on their cell phone. Why do you always have to look at the bad? What about the good (black),people that helped out? Would it kill you to recognize that?
..................................
Are you kidding me? Why wouldn't we focus on the bad and have it on the news for people to be aware there are shitheads out there that will stoop so low as to steal an officers gun after he was obviously so injured that he couldn't defend himself? Color doesn't matter....it happened and the primary focus should be on the perp. The real heroes or good samiratins wouldn't want the focus on them if that's truly what they are. God help you if something like this ever happened to someone in your family....I guarantee you'd think differently!

There was another child luring attempt 3 Jun 09 around 10pm in the 3600blk of 111th street. An offender described as a hispanic male with a thin beard attempted to lure a 13yo girl into his van. She was able to alert some people standing ouside Lawlers bar who were able to get a good description of the van and Lic plate. Police are investigating this incident

Can't confirm it but I heard the passerby who helped the officer was a retired officer, not just your everyday ENGLEWOOD citizen. I have the audio of him calling it in and will email it to anyone at their request. Even hearing the passerby talk, you can tell he is not just a regular citizen. He knew exactly what to do and say.

Once again we are left to defend ourselves. During the midnight watch on 01JUN beat 2211 was detailed to 113-117 Church St for the tour. Also on 02JUN 2212 was detailed to same location while 2211 was at LCM hospital for several hours on reports then detailed to Church St. Again on 03JUN 2211 was detailed to Church St for several hours of the tour. This is an outrage! We pay our taxes therefore we are owed police service in return. I will keep you updated as the month goes on. I will be out of town when the beat meeting is conducted hopefully somebody will challenge the powers that be as to why this is happening.

I made it my mission that nite to make sure she saw her 1st violent crime DOA and went with me into a few nasty ghetto domestics over by the Ryan, would you beleive she beefed to the watch commander the next night and refused to ride with me again lol. this is the type of clout useless people you have assigned to that dist, outside of guys lie self who worked in Englkewood or oo2 dist, unbeleivable. hey M.G/ revolt the crud has arrived and they dont know how to cope.

CPS- banks on parents not knowing their rights. Mt. Greenwood residents...lets become squeaky wheels and get the grease! We should unite and get the rules changed at the AG School so the children in this community can utilize the high school in their own community. The AG should run exactly like Mt. Greenwood and Cassells schools. If you live on the northside of 111th street you go to MTG School and if you live on the southside of 111th street you go to Cassell School. How about if you live in 60655 you can attened the AG School. That is the way it should be!

Residents of Chicago's Mount Greenwood community were surprised Thursday to learn another attempted abduction of a teenage girl had occurred in their normally quiet neighborhood.

That makes two attempted abductions in five days, and that has some residents on edge.

"I'm sorry to hear this," said Margaret Schroeder, president of the Mount Greenwood Residents Association who plans to put the group "on alert."

The latest attempted abduction happened on the north side of the 3600 block of 111th Street, across the street from Mount Greenwood Park, police said.

A 13-year-old Chicago girl was walking toward her home at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday when a man in a van drove past, circled around and stopped near her, police said.

The man rolled down his window and said, "Get in the car," police said.

At that moment, several people were walking out of Lawlor's, a tavern at 3636 W. 111th St., and began walking toward the van, police said. That evidently spooked the man, who drove away, police said.

The bar patrons and the girl, however, got a good look at the black Pontiac, and saw the license plate number, said Sgt. Dennis Kettering, of the Morgan Park Police District.

Using the license plate, detectives determined the man lives in Chicago and went to his home Thursday, Kettering said. The man was not home, but will be questioned as soon as possible, Kettering said. The driver, who was alone in the van, lives "north and west" of Mount Greenwood, Kettering said.

The driver was described as Hispanic, 25 to 30 years of age with brown hair, a medium complexion and a goatee. He wore a gray sweatshirt and a multi-colored hat, police said.

The other attempted abduction, which took place at 1:30 a.m. Saturday on a road between St. Xavier University and Mother McAuley High School, involved a white man driving a small red vehicle who tried to force a 17-year-old girl into his car, police said.

The girl, who was riding a bike, fought him off and he fled, police said.

Despite two attempted abductions in five days, Kettering and Mary Beth Waller, an aide to Ald. Ginger Rugai (19th), said their community is not overly concerned.

"You're talking about two isolated incidents at this point," said Kettering, who works in community policing for the district.

Still, Kettering said it's best if youths stay in groups when outside and should pay attention to their surroundings.

"If they see a suspicious vehicle, they should keep an eye open for any adults in the area, and call out to them. It's important to be aware of your surroundings and stay in well-lit areas," Kettering said.

Waller said Rugai's ward office had not received any calls Thursday from residents, and would not be issuing any alerts.

Schroeder said residents of the tight-knit community "watch out for one another."

"It's a good thing for everybody in the neighborhood to watch, and I think they do that any way," Schroeder said.

Schroeder said she would be more concerned if the same suspect was involved in each attempted abduction.

"Then," she said, "we'd really get the dogs out."

"Unfortunately, our society is a scary place sometimes. No one should be walking alone anywhere. Forty years ago, I wasn't allowed to walk by myself anywhere and the same should go now," she said.

Schroeder is confident both suspects will be caught.

"I have a lot of faith in the neighborhood," she said.

Hello all I'm new to this blog and a Mt.Greenwood resident for 3yrs. I agree with the Ag school idea but talking about is only the start. We need to petition and get local officials involved.

The Ag school is listed in every real-estate posting for our area but if you can't get in because the out of area kids take those spots then where do you send your kids if you truly can't pay the mortgage and a private education? And would you want to send your kids there with the way the school looks at present. What's the alternative? Morgan Park? YEAH RIGHT!

We live in good neighborhood and we should have a good public high-school to match. It's ridiculous that everyone has to send their kids to private schools. We should be putting that money back into our homes and increasing the value of the neighborhood making it an even more desirable place to live and boosting property values even higher. The residents up by O'Hare have this why can't we?

How do they know that we are overly concerned. Have I missed the ward office out taking a poll of its residents?

Waller said Rugai's ward office had not received any calls Thursday from residents, and would not be issuing any alerts.

************

If there are no alerts to warn us or make us concerned, how are we going to call the ward office to express our concern...see the vicious circle?

Schroeder said she would be more concerned if the same suspect was involved in each attempted abduction.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think it is more worrisome that there are two perverts driving around trying to get our kids?

I agree inandaround60655. We are concerned because we are talking about it. I urge everyone to go to the CAPS meeting on the 18th. Do we have a neighborhood watch of sorts? How about a newsletter, police blotter just for 60655?

Not that I know of. Does anyone want to volunteer their time to put together a blotter? If they put together something (maybe a cop with access to up-to-date occurrences), maybe bi-monthly, email me blotter, I will put up the blotter for all the readers to see.

10:15 is late, but curfew is 10:30. It is definitely a community issue. Would I have my kid out at 10:15 by herself, HELL NO, but that that does not negate the fact that there are predators out there stalking our kids. Maybe the parent(s) of this child was out searching for her because SHE didn't come home when she was supposed to. We can't judge the parents without knowing the facts behind why she was out at 10:15, but we DO KNOW that someone tried to lure her into a car as there are witnesses. I shudder to think of what COULD HAVE HAPPENED.

Because of the richness of their colorful life. You the working dummy must pay for them , oh yeah they want hot lunch and a bus ride too...pay up

Anonymous said...

You will also be paying for their lunches all summer too. The schools will be open to feed those "less fortunate" then us. I don't get it, their mammas get free money on their little plastic cards to buy food to feed them.

did you hear that in some states the welfare reciepients are complaining that they want the money put on "visa" type cards so they don't have to be embarassed when using them. PRIDE???? if you had any pride, you would be out busting your hump working two jobs to support your kids, but instead you are a "stay at home mom" living for free in houses that you pay for or take care of and complaining the whole time that you don't get enough freebies. I can see aid as it was intended, a helping hand, NOT a way of life for generation after generation.

I see the sign at the AG School says that summer school is starting on June 15th. They will be having a morning and afternoon session. That means kids out roaming 111th street twice a day. Anyone want to take bets on where the local beat cop WON'T be when the sessions change?

I can almost guarantee it won't be anywhere near the AG School.

Anonymous said...

Just a quick note yes the Ag school is a disgrace when it is letting out. Kids (i guess) wondering around smoking weed playing in the street, urinating in the park but the whole 22nd dist patrol presence is at Julian, Fenger, and Morgan Park high school where on top of the above behavior they are fighting throwing rocks and bricks jumping on cars and shooting at each other. 22 does not have enough officers assigned to handle those schools much less send some officers to try and control the ag school dismissal. It is sad but true Mt. Greenwood is left with no police presence from 130pm to 330-400pm because the other schools have mini riots at every dismissal. It would help is the police ofc assigned inside the Ag school would be outside along with any security assigned there but that too maybe to much to ask for.

I read this blog from time to time. Lots of useful information about the community.
Unfortunately though, this is becoming a venue for vulgarity and racism. I wish the blog administrator keep comments in line. It was a good thing and unfortunately, not so much anymore.

inandaround60655 said...

No racism...check. No bickering...check. No vulgarity...check. No talk about cops or fireman, either good or bad...check. No talk about schools...check. No talk about religion...check.

Okay, my job is done and I can now close down the blog. I can have some spare time now.

Or wait, I know, we can discuss all the rainbows, puppies and sugary things that make up 60655. The sunshine that perpetually shines down on all of us, G*d's creatures. (Can you hear the angels singing and the harps playing?)

Sorry for the cynicism and sarcasm, but if anyone comes on the blog and is offended or unhappy with what they see, then don't read it and go to the right hand corner of the screen and press the red X. Start your own blog; feel free to run it the way you would like. Send me the link, I'll post it.

FYI, I am not speaking in the context of the crime, I am speaking in the context of this site where anytime there is a crime involving black people, some people on this site just want to point out the bad and talk about how horrible black people are. I am just saying that it is OBVIOUS that not all black people are bad and when you wake up to see that then you won't miss the bad one's that come around and try to abduct little girls in the neighborhood. Take the one way blinders off and look for ALL PEOPLE that are out of place, not known or wandering aimlessly or learing at our children. They all don't come with such clear identifying marks as darker skin! And by the way, why is it that anytime someone wants to defend blacks on this site they get horrible things wished upon them and their offspring? I don't wish you unwell! I just want you to be happy and join the real diverse world and start seeing people for who they are and not what color they are. And I don't wish you or your children unwell just to try and prove a point! By the way things have happened to me and my family by people of all races, that's what happens in the "real" world, but thanks for the kind wishes!

Its called playing the odds.Of course individuals of all races are capable of commitimg crimes, but when 80% of all violent crime, and 70% of all crime is commited by one particular "group"-who are you going to look out for? There is an entire gangsta culture out there that is against our (the civilized) very existance. Instead of turning a blind eye and pretending we are all the same- which is nonsense- we should be defending ourselves.

Anonymous said...

Please start calling the police about all stupid behavior at the Ag school dismissal the only way police will be allowed to come west is if they are responding to a call. For some reason the areas east of here seem to get a lot of police service. If the police are not out west on a call they will be sent east to handle the overflow of jobs.

I was at Mt. Greenwood park on Friday with my children and all was good with neighborhood people. The only thing that made me leave is Channel 7 news fired up their broadcasters to talk about the possible abductions in the neighborhood. One thing I didn't want is my kids to be aired on t.v. for these perverts to look at or to search for. Obviously, if the media was at the park all day their should be a community alert and all parents should be explaining stranger danger to their kids on a daily basis. I guess Rugai would like onf of our kids abducted before she feels that this a alarming situation. Hey Rugai, show your true support to the community...turn in your papers and resign already!

All the talk about the agg school and what are we doing about it. I heard that 50% were suppose to be neighbor kids attending and from what I can see that is so not true. Also only 6 kids from graduating class of mount greenwood 2009 were accepted into the agg school. Where do the other 114 kids come from. I wish someone could tell me the statistics. The agg school is on a lotto basis not academic, so we get the good and bad kids together. That is why I will never send my kids there! Teens are easily influenced and it only takes one bad kid to screw it up.

From what I've read about the Ag, it is a magnet school, not a neighborhood school, the same with Keller, that's why "everyone" has a chance to get into the schools. I thought magnet schools were for "exceptional" students? Political B.S.
My thoughts: Annex from Beverly, Morgan park. Mt. greenwood should have its own Alderman....SOmeone from Mt. greenwood, who wants to see Mt. Greenwood thrive, not shrivel up and become like all the other once beautiful neighborhoods in Chicago...I hope that the RESIDENTS Assoc. holds a meeting to recruit new members, because I will be there!!!

The academic standard to get into the AG was raised so that it will be harder to get in. With some patience, many other kids from Mt Greenwood School got in. This is the first year that downtown picked for the lottery to get in. I think the LSC can change the percentage of neighborhood kids that get in. Not sure though. I do find it funny though on how many more Cassel kids got in over Mt Greenwood. Could there be some political influence as Mt Greenwood school has long been treated as the "red headed step child" in 19th ward politics. I for one and sending my son there and am trying to make sure we use it so we don't lose it. With all the ren 2010 and new schools being built in the other neighborhoods we should be able to utilize the AG as our neighborhood school. Wasn't that a campaign promise of Ginger's. Keep calling her office. And on a side note, what is up with Ginger's staff stating "the Mt Greenwood community is not concerned with the recent attempted abductions" ??????

Anonymous said...

a child that lives 8 houses from the ag school was denied enrollement. when the parent called the principal to explain why the child did not get in...the principal said she missed it by a couple of points! so...what is it??? a lottery or a point system!

or is it the flavor of the day?

Anonymous said...

Both. Currently the stanine minimum is 5 in all subjects. For next year and the following it will be a 6. They base it off of the childs 7th grade ISAT scores and the 8th grade grades and attendance. This is for all students regardless of where they live. 7th grade is a vital year. If you had the statnine and did not get in, keep calling to see if a space opens up over summer. Freshman year is a very tough year as they have physics. Some kids end up dropping out and going to other schools. Keep trying it is well worth it.

Anonymous said...

i really think ginger is downplaying the recent abductions because she knows mt. greenwood does not have sufficient police patrol. she knows the community members will use this as an excuse to get more cops in mt. greenwood...and therefore she down plays it...making it sound like we are doing pretty good over in these neck of the woods. she wants to remain on the good side of our dear old mayor and not get her tit in the ringer (so to speak) with him.

she is so transparent...

o.k. that is what i think... :)

I appreciate your calm response. Thank you I don't have rose colored glasses on. My glasses see just fine. They see that neighborhoods and areas of the city that are "diverse" which means 50/50 or somewhere either side of that, with some other mix of cultures and nationalities besides black and white are actually more affluent, more interesting, more cosmopolitan and have higher home values, than areas that are trying to hold on to their singular racial make up. For eg. Oak Park, Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Gold Coast, Bucktown, every downtown, near south, west and north neighborhhod, Beverly, Morgan Park, pretty much any major metropolitan area in the country, affluent suburbs north and west of us are more than happy to welcome an equally affluent neighbor of a differant race or nationality than "European white". And all of these areas have higher property values and have no concern over "white flight". The reason being is that homeowners did not run off the minute someone that looks differant moved in. "White flight" combined with substandard, outdated and/or uniformally common,(when a neighborhood consists of all 1940-60 ranches, cape cods, georgians etc..),causes the decrease in property values not black people Hispanics or other ethnic groups moving in. As long as newcomers can afford the home they purchase then they will probably be just as good a neighbor as anyone. It's when the whites start freaking out and selling their homes for less than they are worth,(sometimes to relatives or less affluent neighbors, just to keep the "purity"), that undesireables move in. And by "un desireables" I mean anyone that can not afford or maintain their home, white or black or brown. Then when they go into foreclosure because they could not afford it in the first place that's when it gets even worse. So when all of these bloggers say "stand your ground" "let's take back the neighborhood", there is nothing wrong with that as long as they are welcoming people from different ethnic and racial backgrounds to join them. Then the make up of the neighborhood will be more reflective of the real world. If you think your objective is to keep Mt. Greenwood "white" than all you are doing is boxing yourself in to your own little unrealistic corner. Your box is going to get smaller and smaller until you have imprisoned yourself and your neighbors in your own little, sad, angry, prejudiced world that does not reflect what is going on and all of the great things that are happening out in the real world. P.S. working in a bad neighborhood is not the "real world" that's just the ghetto, and that's sad too if you have to work there. Sad for you and and the decent people that live there, but don't let it make you jaded.

About sanding the lockers at Mt. Greenwood school. They were doing that on Friday. I was there for the the first graders "Father's day tee" party with my kid and there was paint dust all over the place right out side the gymnasium entrance. Not the door leading outside, the other door leading to the hallway out side the classrooms. Why the heck can't they wait one more week to do this when the kids are out for the summer? That building opened in 1937 so you could just about guarantee that there is lead in one of those layers of paint. A few years ago when my first child was starting Kindergarten over there we noticed the 9x9 asbestos tiles cracking in the hallway and some other rooms. We were told that it was not a problem. Now three years later, over the spring break, they covered the whole first floor hallway with new tile and are supposed to do the second floor over the summer. Don't worry, our kids are in the hands of professionals.

Good morning, in response to "Mixer". I have relatives in Tinley and Frankfort who have other races as neighbors, who respect their property, as well as others property. Now, what I've seen happening in Mt. Greenwood is another story. Do you read the police blotter? The events that have been happening on the block of WHipple should not be tolerated by anyone. The trouble stated happening when our newest neighbors moved in. Is it okay for that street to be tagged with FUBUS hanging from the wires?? Is it okay for gangbangers to be flying through our neighborhood with their bass turned up so loud that it shakes the house? Is it okay for kids getting robbed walking home from the library on a Saturday morning?? I will agree that some of the people living in Mt. greenwood do not keep their houses up, but it is not the white people who are claiming the streets and the parks. Beverly isn't that nice anymore, beautiful houses, but when I open up the Beverly review and read the poice blotter, most of the crimes are happening in that area. I will live in my box and continue to fight for our right to live in a decent neighborhood. have you taken a drive through Englewood lately?? For every four houses there are 3 that are boarded up...If Morgan park is such a great place, then why is the High School 93% black, and have police protection at the end of a school day??I don't know, but I think everyone on this blog only wants to keep what is theirs.

Just went to school very early this morning to see the EPA report done yearly on the school. NO LEAD. NO LEAD ON LOCKERS. I really am pissed off at the alarmist who got us all upset over something they themselves did not look into fully. You should be ashamed of yourself. It is like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. Get facts before you sound an alarm. Anyone else concerned????Go to the school and look at he report. Better yet bring your lead testing equipment. I should know better than listen to rumors that snowball into hysteria. I was worried but instead of overreacting, I checked facts.

What great things? In Chicago? In Englewood? You are sadly oblivious to the real world! We don't need them to live in our little world/neighborhood...we see what they do every day on the news! Go drive through Englewood and then compare it to Mt. Greenwood. Wait....nobody in their right mind would drive through that neighborhood including you! That's NOT what I want for my family. I want my kids to be able to enjoy our neighborhood and not have to watch over their shoulders everywhere they go. We have to worry about where our kids go and their safety in our neighborhood because of them....that to me is imprisonment to our kids and it sickens me! Shoes hanging from wires...gang related....c'mon, are you serious!!!

Popular beliefs

It is popularly believed that tennis shoes hanging from utility wires designate "gang territory" or a location where one can buy street drugs, but that version of events would not seem to apply to the hefty percentage of shoes seen dangling over non-gang neighborhoods and quiet streets in rural towns where there's little or no gang and drug activity to be found.

Another folk belief holds that teenage boys who've just "scored" for the first time — i.e., lost their virginity — are wont to heave an old pair of sneakers over a power line to celebrate the moment and proclaim their conquest to the world (who says teenage boys aren't romantic?).

Cecil Adams catalogued at least a dozen more theories in a 1996 "Straight Dope" column, all of them very interesting but unconclusive. The long and short of it is that everybody seems to have a theory but nobody knows the answer. Maybe there is no answer; maybe sneakers hanging on power lines don't have any particular meaning at all.

Police: "This is another kind of urban myth"

More recently, an Associated Press story out of Tucson hoisted up the conventional wisdom that dangling sneakers are an emblem of gang activity and knocked it down with a quote from the police: "This is another kind of urban myth," a spokesman said. Like law enforcement officials everywhere else, Tucson police have found no correlation between dangling sneakers and crime.

Now for my take on the subject: There could be many different explanations for the gym shoes on the wires.

1. It could be someone marking the area.

2. With all that has been posted on this blog, the police blog, and just plain loose talk and gossip through the neighborhood, and I have heard a lot, This may have been done by some local residents to stir things up for more police in the area.

I have had many conversations with officers in 022 concerning our temporary resident Gangster Disciples on Whipple. Their presence is known and officers from the neighborhood are keeping an eye on them.

I have been made aware that an incident as Cassel school where neighborhood kids were hanging out when confronted by a group of male black teens who told them this was their hood and to get the F#@% out of there.

My advice ... Call Call Call the police. Be descriptive when you call, do not just give minimal information. Help the Police help you. Some of these African Americans youngsters come to the neighborhod to race bait the police and the neighborhood so they can sue. Do not let them succeed. If you see criminal activity report it. Put the pressure on these thugs. Officers need to fill out contact cards every time they stop someone. This shows a pattern, there is a record.

If you see graffiti before you have it removed or remove it take a picture of it for the police to see if it is gang graffiti. Or call the Area 2 Gang Unit to come out and look at it so they can be alerted to the area where gans may be trying to infiltrate.

Do not back down to crime or criminals. Make a difference in your neighborhood. Teach your kids what to look for and what to stay away from. And finally a little bit on that note of our own children ... I have seen some our own little darlings running through the neighborhood acting shall I say less than appropriate. Remember something folks ... just because curfew is 11:00 pm on the weekends does not mean a 12, 13, or 14 year old needs to be out roaming the sreets at 11:00 pm. A good rule of thumb when I was a kid was that when the street lights came on you were home or at least on your own block. Maybe we should get back to those types of days. Know where your kids are, who they are with, and what they are doing. It will keep them safe and others as well.

Mixer I appreciate your comments. You make valid points about other neighborhoods. Here is the problem though; Mt.Greenwood in many parts is still affordable for many. When homes are selling for $180,000 after a foreclosure and a quick rehab the opportunist from a troubled neighborhood slips right in. You can’t blame them, they want out.

Maybe they specifically don't have bad intentions but friends and family who visit or the teenage son or daughter who's growing up and having friends from the old neighborhood over to party in a safe neighborhood increase the burden and test the tolerance of quiet neighbors who just want to live and let live. They tend not to care about this neighborhood because it’s not theirs while visiting.

Yes property values are effected (sad but true) because this is a reasonable area market-wise where city employees (who make a moderate salary) live and don't want the inner city life. If all our homes were worth $550,000 and up then you'd know you are getting a certain level of ownership and there is nothing to worry about. When home values sink you make affordable homes in the area that invite a certain element

For someone looking to buy in the Mt.Greenwood area they are looking for certain characteristics in the block/neighborhood. Likely they are forced to live in the city but can’t afford Norwood Park or Jefferson Park. It’s not right but it is a reality here. If your neighbors are black then it’s not going to be as easy to sell your house. Someone looking to buy specifically seeking a certain characteristic won’t know your neighbors and assume many negative things ultimately not buying your house and effetely reducing your property value. You can’t blame them, why take the risk? Maybe it’s unfounded but when shopping for homes you don’t tend to ask for a sit down dinner with the potential neighbors to feel them out. You get a first impression and move on.

We are trying to maintain property values and see to it that our neighborhood stays safe. If some people comment on race then their emotions may get away from them sometimes but I don’t think the intension is bad. We all want the same thing, a safe neighborhood, healthy property values and a pleasant way of life, there is nothing wrong with seeking that out.

I see your point but if you beleived the alarmist? What besides getting upset did you do? Did it really cause you that much grief? Does the report you looked at say they checked the lockers specifically? I am not saying you should not be mad but we do live in a city with people who refuse to see the truth in all areas. The mayor after all still thinks there are 14,000 officers. I don't think I would be that mad if it was me. As far as someone testing it themselves I will assume you are joking on that one. If I was you I would not even read the newspaper as that is full of alarming lies too.

If she was snippy, she should not of been. However as a police dispatcher myself, I do know we have to ask what is suspicious. For example, a white couple with indiana tags going up and down the street would not be suspicious to you. you would probably think they were lost and offer help. Black people - SUSPICIOUS to you. I agree with you to a point, people know who lives in the area etc. However I am not convinced you would call if it was a white couple you never saw before. The police cannot just randomly pull people over because they are black in a neighborhood they do not live in. Next time be creative, say you THINK they are looking into cars, you THINK they threw up a gang sign etc. The days of the police being allowed to be the police are over. No officer is going to risk getting a CR to someone who just wants to win the ghetto lottery. You would be surprised how many people cruise other neighborhoods wanting to be stopped so that they can instigate an officer into fighting or worse. I feel your pain believe me, I have been on the other end of the phone with a not too friendly dispatcher but the mere question of asking what is suspicious is a valid one and also involving officer safety. Once I asked someone what was suspicious about a black man and they said, "oh he has a gun , too!" The gun was not important to the caller only the color of his skin. Could the dispatcher of been nicer? Yes, was she wrong to ask what was suspicious? No. Just curious though, what was suspicious?

Any news on the Residents association? I do remember getting an invite in the mail awhile back about new members. A party was being held at a bar on 111th street. It cost $25.00 and you would receive the newsletter the Mt. Greenwood express...I should have attended!!

Nippsy Russell said...

I wouldn't believe a word in that report. What do think is in the EPA report about the broken asbestos floor tiles. Or how about what are risks to the children who attend Mt. Greenwood school, or worse yet to the people who live in the immediate vicinity from the smoke stack/cell tower omitting microwaves 24 hours a day. The former Principal Mrs. McDonald sold us out on that one last year, so whats next? Oh yea, they are just four years late on the "rules" sign that was supposed to be posted in the play lot. The play lot that has no fence to keep the kids from running into the "Homan ave. drag strip".

Mixer, I am curious why you are living here in Mt. Greenwood since it is not your ideal melting pot utopia? I like my box as do my family members and neighbors, that is why we are here. If I wanted to live in the little fairytale land you describe I would move to Hyde park or Lincoln Park (Both of which have increased crime lately), however, the majority of us are here because we want to be here, we like living among white people. And no, I am not sad and no my opinions are not sad just because I am not an Obama lover. Once again, if the racial makeup and racial opinions of the neighborhood does not make you happy, try one of the neighborhoods you mentioned, I'm sure you would be much happier among people who think just like you!!!

We all know the pace at which this City government works. Any city building has a few things in need of immediate repair. The school would love a fence all the way around, but CPS won't pay for it. If it were't for the dedication of the couple of ladies who makeup the beautification commitee saving for 7 years, we would not have the fencing we have in front of the school. You'd think after years of asking for fencing, CPS would do it. But no, other schools are in more "desparate need" of things so we get nothing. Not a new story. The cell tower pays for a teacher because CPS's formula that determines how may teachers we get is so cockeyed that it does not take into account classroom size from grade to grade. Alot of improvements have been made recently because the support from parents(volunteering time),teachers writing grants and the tenacity of the new principal. Please know that every parent at this school wants to see more improvements done now but with little support from CPS and politicians, progress, will continue at this pace.I urge all parents to join in helping. My kids are quite proud when they can say "my parents helped with this". Let's show the rest of the city how Mt Greenwood gets things done. Family that cares about its community.

I think it is great that parents are taking an active interest in their children's school!! Keep up the great work. It's too bad that CPS does not take more of an interest in the school!! Mt.Greenwood Residents Association. I just heard back from Margaret Schroeder the president of the association. She's basically it, there is no one else because the few people she had volunteering aren't around anymore. She asked for help, a secretary or treasurer etc. positions are open. She puts out a newsletter every few months or so. They meet the 3rd Thursday of the month right after the CAPS meeting but the meetings are suspended through the summer starting back up in September.

What this association needs is a website or at least a blog. She says that there is an "Mt.Greenwood Express" newspaper that comes out every 2 weeks (news to me). She says that they hold gatherings and raise a little money to do things like decorate the Christmas tree and pay for the newsletter, polka outings etc. I think this association has a lot of potential but just needs a little TLC.

There is also a Civic Association out there as well (I think its run by our more senior residents). I don't feel comfortable giving out her number but if you call Ginger's office and ask I'm sure Noreen will give it to interested residents. It took her a few days to get back to me so don’t expect an immediate response. In short it’s a volunteer community run association.

From what I have read on this blog it usually only cares if you are White. I understand not wanting certain types of people, dirty,no job, irresponsible etc. But to not want someone because of their color is amazing. I live in a neighborhood where there are not many blacks , however if I had to choose between one of the blacks and my psychotic white trash neighbor I would choose the Black neighbor any day of the week. By the way, my white trash neoghbor has a nice house, it's the mentality that I can do without.

It would be nice if our alderman would show a little support and help reduce the overcrowding that is a result of the excellant work being done by the teachers and staff. The community has been getting involved and the school is turning into a real gem. Hopefully, a little support from the city is on the way.

To Everyone,

It has come to my attention that with the rise in violence, particularly on the East end of the 022nd district, ALL tactical cars are only allowed to patrol the Racine Courts, and Church Street. There has been at least 2 marked police cars at both of these location for almost the past year, yet crime continues both there and throughout the district. There truely is not enough police in the city to be everywhere all the time, but the man power that is being isolated on these two locations is taking away from everywhere else. All the beat cars have been held down at some point or another as a "Detail" to deter crime. Now, as a knee jerk reaction to the shooting last night, ALL tactical cars are pay sole attention to these two areas. This means that the 10 sector(Mt.Greenwood, Morgan Park, Beverly) will not being seeing much of the plain clothes officers in unmarked vehicles. These are the officers mind you, that continue to make arrests on a daily basis and attempt to deter crime.
So regardless of armed robberies throughout our neighborhood, or burglaries, stolen property, etc,...... Our police presence continues to be taken away. It is hard enough keeping 2211, 2212, and 2213 in their repective beats, but now it seems that according to some, the only crime that matters is Racine Courts, and Church street.
I am writing this as a neighbor, and concerned citizen, I strongly encourage everyone to pass this information along voice your complaints to the city. Use the 311 system, Mayor's office, Alderman, etc.,. Let them know that we need more police and we don't need these stupid "details." Yes, those areas have and will continue to be addressed, but we need police EVERYWHERE.

Soon the EPA will not have a minute in the day to inspect anything because they will be counting cow farts. Obama's administration thinks taxing farting cattle is a great source of taxation. $175.00 a head I'm hearing.
Will you not be allowed to fart next?

Maybe if everyone on here stopped complaining so much and picked up the phone, you might get the same results.

CPMom, No one is saying that you should not be diligent in regard to protecting what is yours and wanting your neighborhood to be nice. All rules and laws should be applied equally. The residents of Mt. Greenwood should be more mad at the owners of these homes that rent them out to section 8 than at the renters. It's the owners that are bringing down the neighborhood. Anytime you have people of a significantly lower economic area they are not going to live in the same way as their neighbors. The expectations should be the same for everyone. Just because your other neighbor is white they should not allowed to have their dog out all day barking it's brains out or have broken down cars on their property. Anyone who is economically comparable to you and your neighbors wants the same thing you have. A middle class black family is not going to invite over their gangbanger relatives just the same as you don't welcome your white trash relatives over for barbeques. At least no more than you have to.

Just curious , did anyone help out the owners financially so they did not have to section 8 their homes? Until you are in a situation where you are forced to hang on to what you have however you have to I do not think you should criticize. Maybe everyone who is mad should offer to pay the mortgage of the next person who is contemplating putting their home on the section 8 program. Lots of complaining but I do not see anyone offering to help .

Mixer, do you even live in 60655? You never answered that question. If this neighborhood is so racist and bad, why do you stay? why did you move here in the first place? Or are you just on this blog is state your option of how racist we all are.

I can clearly tell you that when my white trash hillbilly neighbor was foreclosed on, I danced a jig. I don't want to live next to white trash, black trash, purple trash. I paid A LOT for my home, I can barely make it with the economy the way it is and trash of any color (Section 8) is unexceptable. I know that there are affluent African American only communities that don't want whites or poor blacks living by them either. Is that racist?

As for blacks and intergretion. Chicago is, has always been and will likely always be the most segregated City in the States. Maybe I like living in a cookie cutter community. I feel safe here. Wasn't it Jesse Jackson who commented once about hearing foot steps behind and when he looked, he felt relief that it was a white person? Crime statistics show that most crimes are committed by blacks? Aren't the prisons filled with blacks? Look at the City, most of the crimes are black on black. Why? Oh, I know, its the white man's fault. Your right because it was the white man who started welfare. Which gave opportunists of any color to become lazy burdens on society. Free food, free money, free rent. Even in Mt. Greenwood (the school) those kids don't get free lunch, free uniforms, free bookbags, free school supplies, incentives to go to school...please. Everything is handed to these poor mistreated souls, who are perfectly able to hold a job, but choose not to. Instead, they put their hand out and ask for more, no, complain that they don't get enough. I don't see White Entertainment Television, or the White College Fund, or White Miss American Pageant. That would be racist. Your future is what YOU make of it. I love standing in line at the store and the Link card holder is dressed better and eating better than me.

As for a post commenter, you stated that unless you are Native American or came on a ship in shackles, you are an immigrant??? I was born here, so therefore, I am an American. Nothing more, nothing less. The shackles were taken off a long time ago and the freed slaves could have jumped on a boat and gone back to their mother land. Did they? No, they stayed because this was the land of opportunity. If they chose to not take the opportunity, well, that was their choice.

By the way, Obama is WHITE too. Seems everyone forgets that. His cabinet is filled with rich, white men? Why is that? Because he used the "black" side to get elected and now the "white" side is running the country.

1st paragraph - Yes, I live, work and socialize here. FYI, 60655 is not just Mt. Greenwood.

2nd paragraph - Yes, It is racist for blacks to say that they want nothing to do with whites. Which some do. They are racist. So that means it's OK for whites to be racist? What's your point?

3rd paragraph - Once again you are lumping all black people together. All blacks are not on welfare, using link cards etc.. So Jesse Jackson said that, he is an idiot. Just because I am not racist does not mean I like or agree with all black people, I also don't like or agree with all white people re: Rush Limbaugh. So what! Once again what is your point? FYI, I just had 2 "lovely" white folks come up to me and my children at CVS and ask me to let them buy my groceries so that they can have cash because their link cards won't let them get cigs. I said no to them just like I say no to the Streetwise vendors and off ramp tube sock sellers. I treat all "low lifes" equally.

4th paragraph - Oh so blacks just "chose" not to go out and work when in ours or our parents lifetime,(one generation ago) they were told by the Federal government that they were 2nd class citizens and could not eat, socialize or even sit next to white people. Wow! I bet they had a lot of opportunities to work for business owners then, I bet the banks were just banging down their doors so they could lend them money to start a business, I bet all of the politicians in Chicago were welcoming them into jobs instead of their white relatives and friends. Gee, I am such an idiot! Black people have had ALL of the same opportunities and upbringing, benefits and positive emotional and social encouragemnt as white people ALL this time.

5th paragraph - This is my FAVORITE! If Obama did NOT win it would have been because he was 1/2 black or is it because he is 1/2 white? Gosh we could go round and round on this one! Why can't you just admit that the nation was ready for a president that was at least 1/2 black and people of all races voted for him and from what I remember attended the rally downtown and the innaugeration and still support him.... Once again, what's your point?

If you go back a bit...you could say the same happened to the Irish. The signs read "Negros and Irish NEED NOT APPLY." Yet, they rose above and it worked, and yes, one actually became a President. My goodness, an Irish and Black President all in our lifetimes. I don't care what happened one generation ago. It's been 40 years. They could not overcome this once they WERE given the same liberties and freedoms? Once they could work, eat, blah blah with the whities? I am not saying that there are not educated, professional blacks out there. I know there are, I work with them, eat lunch with them. Could I or would I live next to them, sure. But they are a small portion of the black population and unfortunately, over "East" is where the problems are. I don't want THEM living next to me as I am sure you don't want THEM either. If 9 out of 10 dogs bite, I will stay away from all 10. Common sense and self-preservation. Sorry. I am not racist either, I am prejudice. There is a difference. I am prejudice of all idiots, all gangbanger types, no matter what color they are.
