Post for Continued Conversation on Racism

Quite a few people have suggested that the conversation on racism be given its own post instead of totally banning it. If you want to contribute or read it it, it will contained in THIS POST ONLY. This way, the people who want to have the conversation can, they can express their opinion, etc. and the people who are tired of it, don't have to be bothered with it.

I will reiterate the fact that if the comments are posted in other places, they will not be posted. They go here and only here!

thanks...

Sorry Mixer, ever hear the music the black community is putting out? Every other word is NIgger, so why does a kid have to hear it at home? My kids know the word, not from me but from the black kids at school, comedians like Chris Rock, and music, that I might add is not allowed in my home! So stop you instant blame on the residents and open your eyes to the fact that this woman or someone else in her home did this to create a storm and you walked right into it!

Mixer, you claim to be a resident, so why are you so quick to jump on your neighbors, lay blame on your neighbors for everything, find fault with your neighbors, yet refuse to believe this woman created this controversy herself? It has been known to happen before yet you refuse to even consider an outsider of starting trouble, you instantly blame us. Some neighbor you are!

wow...you people should be proud of yourselves! especially with the article that is in today's southtown! way to show your kids how to be stand up citizens! i loved the part where the police officer said it was "kids stuff".

and how ignorant are you people! to blame the woman that lives there? And the blame should be put on the residents. if you people had an open mind, this would never happen. well, guess what...the neighborhoodis being talked about an not in a good way. way to go!

and i am so sure that your children NEVER heard that talk in your home. way to make yourself look like a saint! i bet most of you people go to church. in my eyes, this isnt very christlike

At the school my kids attend in Garfield Ridge, the students were scolded for calling a black boy nigger. The school said they don't condone the use of the word. I don't either, however at this EXACT time, the students were reading the book Edgar Allen which contained the word Nigger SEVERAL times. If you don't condone the word, don't teach it! Kids and adults will do what they want obviously but don't lecture only when it's convenient.

Whoooo hoooo free speech! Love it!
OK, this is my OPINION about the word. The word is wrong no matter who uses it. Just because black people use it themselves to each other or in music or it is in literature does not mean it is right. Many black acedemics debate this all the time and they agree it should not be used. If it is in literature, well then that is educational and you suplement that info with what the parents teach and explain to their children.

This is the way I look at it. If they use it with each other it is often in a friendly affectionate way like when guys call each other asshole or dickhead in a friendly way or women say hey bitch in a friendly way to their friends. But you would not scrawl "dickhead, asshole, scab, bitch, nigger, gimp" etc.. on someones door if you did not mean it in the friendliest of ways. Maybe a 40th birthday!! Calling someone nigger is attacking a personal characteristic,(the color of their skin) which is un changeable. For example if I had a friend that was handicapped and we had a REALLY good relationship they ,might not mind if I called them a "gimp" periodically in the most affectionate of terms.(FYI, I still would not do this) but if a stranger got pissed off at my friend at the supermarket and noticed their disability and called them a f*****g gimp, I would think that is highly offensive. The offender singled out a personal characteristic that is unchangeable and went for the jugular. That is exactly what whites/blacks or people who do not know the black person being attacked are doing, they are going for the jugular. It doesn't matter what other people do. What do YOU want to do, what do YOU want to teach your children to do. To find the absolutely most offensive most hurtful thing to use to attack a person? That's not nice or Christian. P.S. finally there is not one word anywhere in the english language that could remotely offend a white male that comes anywhere close to this word, unless you add on personal characteristics or personal knowledge,(white fat ass, toothless white piece of shit, zit faced white boy, scab...) get it?

I am not blaming the residents for what happened. I am blaming the person who did it. Just because this woman does things that are wrong why would white people want to drop to the same low life depths and write that word on her door,(PS to the other anonymous, it's her door as long as she is paying to rent it)Why don't you prove how much better you are, the way you think you are and handle it differently. Not like a low life like them. What did you teach them? That whites in the area are just as stupid and ignorant, and can break the law,(grafitti is a crime) but we are just a different color? I bet people in 60655 would be REALLY pissed if gangbangers started tagging garage doors. What's the difference? The Whites are marking their territory and making a warning just like a gangbanger would. Once again I repeat, what's the difference? If you say you are, then you should be better than that!!!

I have always said that anyone that does something wrong should be held accountable. No matter what race or nationality or religion... But all I say is don't lump everyone together. I don't call all 60655's racist because I know that is not true for a fact. I don't call all black people lazy criminals because I know that is not true for a fact. Calling a person a scum bag is ok. Calling someone a "monkey scumbag" is racist. Calling someone a bitch is ok, calling someone a "white bitch" is racist. It goes both ways. It's not right either way.

MIXER said...

Second Wifey - I understand your frustration. But the word exists, it has historical origins and if you explain it to your children and the implications of and it's use then it is educational. Just like explaining that the words "Dago and Pollack and MICK" etc.. are wrong but you will find those words in tons of literature. You complement what your children learn at school and outside the home with your own values and morals and then they will not be confused when they see it or hear it and eventually they will form their own intelligent opinion.

MIXER said...

Since we now have an open forum I actually have my first question! Do any of you actually DESIRE diversity for yourself and your children? Don't you want to know about aother cultures and ethnic groups and races? And I don't just mean their food. When you think about it black people come from many cultures, they could be African, Jamaican, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Indian and any combination of these cultures as well as European cultures etc.. If you get to know a black person you will eventually find out their ethnic makeup just like you would your Irish/Polish/Italian neighbor. That is why I don't say African American, how do you know they are not Jamaican? But if you look at all of these cultures and their history they are as rich as the cultures in the rest of the world. If you look at their differences they are cultural. If you learn the culture and the history you start looking at things in a different way. If you DESIRE diversity instead of just tolerate it it changes the way you look at everything. Any takers?

Mixer.....

What do you mean if they start??? Two of them were just picked up robbing old people on my block trying to park in their garage! At least this isolated incident is to property and not to humans! We do it to run them out and it works! Just what kind of roof work is this lady getting done that she has to come stay and stir up trouble in our neighborhood for 3 months?

In response to your question....ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!! I'm proud to say it and I'm sure I won't be the first!

No Mixer, I do not desire to have diversity in my neighborhood for myself or my children. This is what many of us have been trying to tell you, we like it here as it is.

Mixer, you already know the answer to that question.
Here's the deal, you can't stand the way a majority of us think and you can't except the fact that your pollyanna look at the world will not change our minds. Why keep pushing? All you accomplish is to inflame emotions and re enforce our thoughts and opinions.

I was the "anonymous" on the other blog that brought up the question of the house on whipple being tagged or not.I didn't mean to start a shitstorm over it,just looking for the truth.I had heard the story at Mackells on 111thst.but rumors and stories fly around in taverns all the time, just wanted to see if it was true.My families lived in M.G. for 54 years, but the things i've seen in the last few years, are really making me think changes aren't for the better.

Mixer, you're not alone, perhaps outnumbered. Take comfort, we have village idiots, a gal who isn't 60655 - but identifies herself through her husband's profession.

The only thing constant is chage.

Second City Wifey said...

To Mixer, I never said I was frustrated. I also never said I did not understand the word. I was simply stating what happened at my kids school. My children were not the ones using the word. I would also not expect the school to be the ones teaching my children right from wrong. They can stick to teaching math, reading, etc. Just from reading this blog it sounds as if you are the one frustrated though. By the way ,unlike others on here I will not get into back and forth posting with you or anyone else. I do not want to push my views on others nor do I want other views pushed on me.

Have a great day.

WOW!!!! I actually didn't think people like you still existed! You people are disgusting! And to the comment regarding the word "nigger" in an Edgar Allen book....it was ok back then because they also called black people slaves. I guess its ok for me to teach my children to call people like you white non-educated trash....because thats how you act! Guess what....neighborhoods arent the way they used to be. Times are changing! Time for you to change too! If you dont want to live in a city where there is diversity, move to Naperville!

Is this post only for 60655 residents and single people then?

Anonymous said...

The big diference that separates 60655 from many other neighborhoods 1) grafitti tends to get painted over as soon as it is found 2) there seems to be little parental support for taggers and even less community support 3) equal opportunity...if Martians are seen tagging a garage; somebody is sure to dime their skinny backsides to their parents, the popos, or the neighbors. All members of humanity are also given the same treatment. Such foolishness tends to be frowned on here.

I sure wouldn't mind diversity if the diverse people could act like normal human beings.Point being, black family moved onto Whipple very soon after moving in they are asulting the neighbors and throwing up their gang signs telling thier neighbors that they now own the block and getting arrested. These are not human beings these are animals. My family and I moved to MG because we are forced to live in the city and there are very few havens left for people who want to allow their children to play outside, have nice neighbors and atleast some sense of safety. Like I said, I'm not against diversity I'm against ignorance and entitlement.

Hey Mixer, why is it that the least diverse (and therefore most racist) neighborhoods in this city are black? Englewood, Roseland, Grand Crossing, Gresham, etc. run 100% black. Why aren't these poor souls experiencing the joys of diversity by welcoming in people of all other cultures just like all non-black neighborhoods are expected to do. Could it be that the African American culture is the most racist and self-isolated group in this country?

Anonymous said...

ok I would just like to say one thing. Why is it racism? I don't believe it is. Here i go on my little soap box, 1. we pay taxes and get nothing. 2. we cant send our kids to public schools. 3. we do not have high crime. 4. we take care of our families. 6. we take care of our houses. 7. we respect other people 8. we can let out children play in front of our homes. 9. We dont disturb our nieghbors. 10. we actually try to help those who need help. I am so sick and tied of paying to raise other people children. I have three of my own and i do not think the certain people will even get of the government tit unless something is totally changed. I mean i work on the east side and its hell. I dont think it rasism if we do not want to turn into that. I dont want my children around it!!!!!!!!!

ITA with your post. Why is it racist to want to live with people like yourself. It apparently is not racist to have all black colleges, NAACP, Ebony magazine, Black Miss America, The Black Bloggers Convention( held last week in chicago). Major companies like Nike provide shoes, bags, clothing to BLACK schools, as if we don't need help also, free concerts, free camps, free this and that for poor black kids, hey we are struggling too. Our kids go without because we are paying so much in taxes, tuition, groceries, etc. What is fair about that?
I am so tired of the race card being thrown out everytime whitey says he likes his neighborhood the way it is. For all of you who so desperately want diversity, why did you move here in the first place? It was not diverse then, so why here and not Ashburn/Gresham, , Pullman, South Chicago, South Shore. Why come here among people who bother you so much and who are so disappointing to you? That makes as much sense as me moving to Englewood and crying/complaining that they are mean to me and call me cracker, honkey, white bitch and worse.

let me ask you a question...do you live on the block of whipple and see this first hand or did you hear it from someone? there are alot of residents in the mt. greenwood community that act like elitists. i know that every person in the area is not going to have an open mind, but the sad thing is that as a whole, the community acts like they are better than black people. just like the comment made that black people act like animals. how sad that you have these opinions and that they will be passed down to your children. its a vicious cycle!

I live in Garfield Ridge, not Gage Park . Also to the person who pointed out the word was ok to use in the Edgar Allen Book , I never said it wasn't ok to use in that book or in that time period. I merely said the school was upset someone used the word and said it should not be using it at ALL even as they taught it. As far as Naperville, there is section 8 there. Also there is a black lesbian police officer there-how is that for diversity? Reading this and posting on here for the past few weeks, I can say I dare to even agree with Mixer on some issues.
someone posted this :
a gal who isn't 60655 - but identifies herself through her husband's profession.

I took my husband's last name when we were married-THAT identifies me MORE as a person than his profession ever will.

It seems people don't want outsiders even on the blog, I can't imagine how they are treated if they dare move in to that neighborhood.
I read this blog because in and around has lots of good information on here. I read posts about the neighborhood because it still involved the city of Chicago. If the tension is this high on a blog towards outsiders then like I said I can't imagine how it would be in person.

SC Wife, don't let a lone commenter make you feel as if you can't comment on this blog. You have seen first hand what Mixer's pollyanna version of diversity can do to a thriving neighborhood. It is not that we are against outsiders, it is that as a great number are city workers therefore obligated to stay in the city, we want to keep our safe family oriented neighborhood that! Too many of us see the blight that some neighborhoods have succumbed to and we deal with those that Mixer so readily want in our neighborhood on a regular basis and do not want to deal with that in our own backyards.
I just don't see why some find it wrong that we want to live among our own.

"#1 You have seen first hand what Mixer's pollyanna version of diversity can do to a thriving neighborhood.
#1 The version of your life and your families life doesn't have to do with your physical proximity to people of different backgrounds it has to do with your desire to know different people and cultures and integrate that into your life and your childrens lives. I choose to know different types of people and I get to know them and learn about them and then if I like them, I am friends with them. My polyanna world exists and it exists physically right next to you because I choose to make it exist. I don't need to go to Englewood. That is not a neighborhood I would consider due to ECONOMICS. Now if I was from Oak Park or Evanston or the South Loop or Lincoln Park or any of the other ECONOMICALLY similiar and diverse neighborhoods I would consider it. But I am not from there. So I get to stay here and try & make it a positive experience.

#2 Mixer--why did you choose to live in a predominatly white neighborhood if diversity is such an important issue to you? i love people who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.
#2 I live here because I grew up here and I KNOW I am not alone in my views or I wouldn't live here. People who think like me often don't waste their time having conversations about race with people like you. Maybe that's my problem. I still have hope that things can change even more than they already have. It is vastly different from when I grew up. At least now black people are not getting chased out of local parks with baseball bats just for being black. Now they just get the steely eyed look instead of a friendly hello. But they don't get that from everyone. That's when they let their gaurd down and then you can get to know them as human beings and find out thay are not that much different from you.

#3 Why come here among people who bother you so much and who are so disappointing to you?
#3 Your not all dissapointing. I know lots of nice white people that don't bother me much at all!

#4 I sure wouldn't mind diversity if the diverse people could act like normal human beings.Point being, black family moved onto Whipple..."
#4 The black family that moved on to Whipple that are such a problem are not the "normal" black people that would desire to live near YOU! First of all they were recruited to live there. That's what section 8 is. You make your property sec. 8 then you try & get a sec. 8 renter. So the person you should be pissed at is the owner who couldn't afford the property he built so he/she in turn brought in a group of people that can not afford the property or the neighborhood. Once again back to ECONOMICS PEOPLE! It's is not about the color of your skin it's about a persons economic level. If they were a "nice" middle class black family that just went about their business because they chose to buy a house in Mt. Greenwood, I think they would probably not want to piss off their neighbors, even if they are white and easily pissed off.

Nice lively debate though! Nice to hear I have some supporters and maybe even a couple on the fence. I will take whatever I can get!

I personally have heard enough of this Mixer (kind of a windbag). People feel the way the feel and, believe me, we get you feel and I don't think you are going to convince anyone.

I can honestly say I don't hate black people, but have to want to live next door to them either, at least to be considered non racist. That doesn't make me a bad person! Unfortunately, the black people roaming around this neighborhood are generally up to no good if you look at the arrests, and we know only a few black families live around here.

I don't want to be scared for my daughter to go out, and I don't want to tell her to be afraid of black kids, that happened all on her own. There was a couple of black kids who pushed her friend off a bike and stole it.

I saw a young black kid lingering around my garage trying to see what was in there. Then wouldn't you know it, my neighbor must have had some better stuff because they robbed him instead.

I lived next door to some straight up hilbillies for a while, and I can honestly say I would prefer to live near a nice working class black family who didn't cause a comotion. Not wanting to be afraid doesn't make you racist! This is obviously not a very diverse neighborhood, nor do I think we should force it to be one. We're not here having KKK rallies. This is a nice place to live and I want to keep it that way!

I can't believe all the press the graffiti incident got. Of course, it's illegal, but do you know how much crime, VIOLENT crime goes on not too far away, and this gets all the attention because of the "black factor". I think all of the attention race issues are getting is getting to be a bit racist for the white people.

There are a couple black families living in MG and have been for about 6 or more years, and there was no commotion about it, because they are good neighbors and decent working people. I think it's the crime and commotion these other families are causing that perhaps is the problem.

The actions of others should not cause any of us to be considered racist!!!

I challenge "Mixer" to try some those activities in Englewood, or Gresham, or Roseland etc, etc, and see if she has the same results. You're ridiculous. Oh, by the way, did you hear about the 9 year old girl that was murdered in her grandfathers driveway at 74th & Stewart today? Drive by shootings are great! "Key word here is choose. You choose what you want and expect others to respect it. We choose something different and you slam us and try to force your opinions on us."

I don't force my opinions on anyone. I express my opinions just as others express theirs. They have a right to theirs and I to mine. I am just trying to understand why people think that they have a right to pick and choose who lives in their area in a city of chicago neighborhood? The way they pick and choose is by making it abundantly clear who is welcome and who is not. If you want a private neighborhood then go and buy a plot of land and create your gated community. This is the city! If you took a job with the city then you knew the rules when you joined. So lets get this clear, your not racist your "white separatists". Your happy for black people to live their lives and enjoy all that life has to offer just not near you. So if your white neighbors adopt a black child will you still be their friend? What if one of your white neighbors marries a black person and moves them in, will you dis-own them as friends? The position you are taking is solely based on color not on relationships that you might develop. That's gonna be a tough principle to maintain. Your just not being realistic.

What is so wrong with wanting the neighborhood I grew up in, live in and love, despite some of it's negative qualities, to be a better place? No neighborhood is perfect and there is no "diverse utopian village" out there regardless of what people think. 60655 and it's neighboring areas are a great place to be, what's wrong with wanting it better? Maybe if your daughter knew some nice black kids she wouldn't be afraid of all black kids. Then maybe she could identify the good from the bad, just like she has to identify nice white kids from bullies. Teach her to look for the actions and attitude not just the color or she is going to get blind sided by a white predator or criminal.

No one is saying the neighborhood should be forced into anything. But if you don't think that writing'"get out n***r" isn't a threat to any and every black person that reads that article or hears about it than you are just in denial. It's as close to KKK as it gets. It's not a "nice place" if there are people who would write things like that living there. If your afraid of ALL black people than you don't know ANY black people. Go up to The Original Pancake House on Western sometime and strike up a conversation with the black family next to you. I live a very exciting life and I am already ahead in the world so spare me your pathetic comment!

Once again, we probably all agree that there are decent black families out there. The problem still remains that once a few of them move in, people are going to move out because of the FACT that 99% of the crimes are committed by blacks! Any statistic can show you that! One just robbed the KFC in OUR neighborhood! Why would we want to live with that? We move out when they come in and the neighborhood goes downhill. Economics? Our neighborhood has good economics because it's predominantly white. It would be completely opposite if blacks started moving in just like the rest of the neighborhoods that started changing. So YES, even though there may be a small percentage of decent ones, it won't stay that way. So thats why we choose the attitudes and opinions we have and nobody is going to change our minds! I'm sorry your race has ruined it for the few good ones out there, but don't come preaching to us that we are bad people because we choose to stay away from it and try to keep it away from us!

Nipsy, the neighborhoods you mentioned are lower income neighborhoods. As long as you and your neighbors don't race to sell your house cheaper than it is worth because you are moving to some fictitional or self designed "whitey land" then Mt. Greenwood will be fine. As you said many very nice black people go about their business everyday in the area and don't bother you. What a surprise!

Oh Mixer, enough already!! Preach on somewhere else. This has been discussed to death!! We know how you feel, you know how we feel, you aren't planning on changing, we aren't planning on changing. Agree to disagree and move on. We have very good, valid reasons for living here and feeling as we do, respect that just as you want respect for your opinions and let it go already!
You are not winning any converts by bashing our thoughts, opinions and desires!

"Hey Mixer, why is it that the least diverse (and therefore most racist) neighborhoods in this city are black? Englewood, Roseland, Grand Crossing, Gresham, etc. run 100% black. Why aren't these poor souls experiencing the joys of diversity by welcoming in people of all other cultures just like all non-black neighborhoods are expected to do."

Hey Anonymous, helloooooo? That happens all the time!!! It's called gentrification! Have you ever heard of Lincoln Park? Back in the 1950-60's white people said don't dare move west of Halsted. Damn I wish I didn't listen to them I would be a millionaire by now. Gee lets name a few others, Wicker Park, Bucktown, South Loop,(was completely wiped out and re-built), Lakeview...I could name a ton! Lets see what else...all of the projects are being torn down and the people are being displaced and scattered everywhere. As soon as the land is more valuable than the votes of the people that live on it their concerns are completely negated. All of the people in these communities were pushed out by developers and higher property taxes and guess where they are going? Not to Mt. Greenwood! They are going to the suburbs where the housing is cheap or they are moving into the cheapest houses they can find or they are going into section 8 and landing in homes "white people" should not have built in the first place. POOR BLACK PEOPLE AND OTHER POOR PEOPLE ONLY LIVE WHERE THE WEALTHY ALLOW THEM to live until they determine a better use for the land. Just wait..if we get the olympics all of the poor people east of us are going to get pushed out so that Daley can make the city look pretty for the rest of the world. Where do you think they are going to go? Think about that. I would make sure your house is not up for sale then at a really cheap price or your neighbors may not like what you do. The moral of the story is this, don't be afraid of change embrace it. Make your life and the lives of the people around you richer by engaging the rest of the world not shutting them out. You, your family and your community will prosper and be richer and better for it. Close your self off and say you don't want change,(just like the people in the projects that tried to stand their ground and got booted anyway), you will become outdated and just keep running away or get pushed out. Not much different than the people you are afraid of.

Nippsy Russell said...

"Mixer" I said WE don't confront THEM. You said in one of your posts that whites chased blacks from parks in this neighborhood with bats. I just want to know went this event happened. You can bet if that had happened in Mt. Greenwood the media would have jumped all over that. They love it when a story like that pops up in a "White" community to cover. Mean while they cover one out a thousand Black on Black or Hispanic on Hispanic crimes. Go figure.

inandaround60655 said...

Mixer, I commend your liberal approach to the world. I however am a conservative.

You have yourself said that you grew up and live in the neighborhood. Do you work? How do you know “black” people? Are all the “black” people you know from Beverly? Are they all middle-class? Are you black or white? Are you in a mixed race relationship? Do you have kids and if so, do you arrange black and white play dates regularly? How, do you avoid the parks in the white neighborhoods and play only in the parks in Beverly or Morgan Park so your kid’s get a more diversified play group?

I myself grew up in the “inner-city.” Not on the outskirts of it. I went to a Chicago Public high school, did you? I had “black” friends in school and none of us were middle-class, but I didn’t go to their house and they didn’t go to mine, that was a safety issue that we both understood.

I lived in Marquette Park and was forced out by crime. I lived in Brighton Park and was forced out by crime. My dad grew up in Visitation and was forced out by crime. My husband’s family grew up in the Back of the Yards and were forced out by crime. My best friend was forced out of Ashburn because of crime. St. Bede is losing ground because of crime. So you tell me what all of these areas have in common? Don’t even say economics because when the crime came, the area was middle-class. This is the point people are making, it’s the crime that follows the race and not just black folks either. Have you ever been forced out of your home, torn away from your friends? I have. You flee an area when violence forces you to.

I grew up hanging out at Ford City Mall…do you shop there now? Why not? Could it be because of the crime?

The crime happening in this city is mostly black-on-black, but what happens when all the areas get “diverse?” The majority of black folks that moved into Mt. Greenwood, knew they were moving into a predominately white neighborhood, that’s why they did it, for safety for their children. I can understand that. I live in spitting distance from a few of the families, rarely ever see them. No problems. I lived near Kennedy Park for 9 years, 75% white, 25% black. No problems. They choose to live a predominately white neighborhood, because they don’t want to live with the garbage either. That’s what we don’t want, the families that move in and have no regard for their neighbors. Do we do a poll before they rent: excuse me, you seem like a nice (black, Hispanic, asian) family. Are any of your family members gang bangers, do people not like them, do you like white people? What about your cousins that will be visiting, or your kid’s girlfriend’s brother’s cousin that will be visiting? No, so we don’t know if we will be getting middle-class or the dreaded lower economically challenged family. I have a house two doors down from me for sale and its cheap, I had three cars pull up (same family) and Grandma, mom and about 5 boys ranging from 18 to 10 get out, hats cocked, pants falling down, white t-shirts, you know the type. Did that scare me? YES! Next day, same thing, different race, did that scare me? YES! They might be the nicest family around, but I am afraid of who junior pissed off. Will that next stray bullet be coming through my window?

I have been working downtown for the past 15 years. I have worked in places where the staff was 50% white and 50% black. For the most part everyone got along, but I can tell you that black people are racist too. In some firms, the majority of the minority would not even say hello back to me when I said hello, and it was because I was white. They would tell you to your face. I was judged because my skin was white and they were still holding onto something that happened 200 years ago and not by my ancestors. How dare they judge me? I didn’t care, they were ignorant, I got it, I moved on and ignored them the same way they ignored me. Live and let live.

As i understand it, the black renter whose garage was defaced isn't the first black family to move onto the block. I was told that another family had lived there months prior to the other family. No such chaos happened before that I had heard of. It seems that this first family has offered no reason to anyone to be treated with rascist graffiti. They are friendly, family people who treat others as they want to be treated. To a family like that, I say welcome and enjoy this neighborhood we call home. I don't know, but if they are Section 8 too, then good for them. The family who moved in second has come in and symbolized everything we don't want our neighborhood to be. I am not excusing it, but is it any wonder why they were targeted with this act?

Lincoln Park? Gentrification? Let's look at the fine bustling black community in Lincoln Park-oh wait-there isn't one. South Loop was historically industrial-no racial group called that place home- so who was displaced? Wicker Park? Who owns those overpriced brownstones? I guarantee you it is not your black friends. Mt. Greenwood does not need gentrification so therefore it is not necessary for the residents here to blindly accept it. I ask you, why don't you and your merry band of do-gooders attempt to gentrify Englewood. I am sure you will be welcomed by the current residents. After all, there are no cultural differences to get in the way (none that you haven't self admittedly embraced anyway). It's simply a matter of economics. I'm sure you can preach to them about the merits of leading a civilized and productive life. A helping hand buy someone as enlightened as you may be all that is needed.

Open comment to Mixer...

in several responses you bring up "economics"

Until the black community realizes that you do not have to be rich to be civil and respectable the problem of "acceptance" will never be resolved.

People have a problem with "niggers" not "black people"

Lack of respect for themselves and their community is what brings areas like Englewood down.

My job brings me to places like this. When I make the effort to clean my mess I'm often told by the residents "Awww, man, you don't gotta pick that shit up...this is the ghetto"

Until those sucking the government tit are made to work for the benefits they receive the ghettos will remain. (Don't use the there's more whites on public aid than blacks quote.....there's more whites in the populous.....by percentage of their respective populations there are more blacks receiving benefits)

Example: "I can't work cause I got kids"

We're already paying for "head start" and similar programs. A parent's number one priority should be advancing their childs education.

Step 1 - Walk the kid to school. Make sure he/she gets there.

Step 2 - Have a "jobs" office at the school for parents. Parent drops off the kid, goes to the office for an "assignment"....something as simple as sweeping the curbs, cleaning a vacant lot or mowing a seniors lawn.

Step 3 - Complete the assignment and report back to the school to retrieve the child. Interact with the teacher and check for homework.

These 3 simple actions will improve the "underpriviliged" communities in these ways

1) Education is emphasized
2) Pride in community is established or deepened
3) Children are shown a positive work ethic

Until an effort is shown from within the "black community" to become self sufficient...nothing will change in the minds of the average white guy

In and around, thanks so much for your post. You put it perfectly.

As for Mixer, you are the least open-minded person here. You are trying to tell me to teach my daughter (whose friends bike was stolen by black kids) not to be afraid of black people, but I think it is understandable - she is in her own neighborhood and being approached by people who look sketchy and don't live here - sorry, black or white, I'd be afraid too! The thing is, white people in her own neighborhood aren't pushing her and her friends off of their bikes.

Also, I am trying to say, I live near a black family who is lovely and have lived here for years, as in and around said, because they want to live in a nice low-crime area. My daughter is not afraid of them. Please quit picking and choosing parts of everyone's posts, there is more to them than the one sentence or to you want to outline.

Like I said, I know and have worked with black people and like them. It does not make me racist to not want to invite them all to move in my neighborhood. We ALL know black people and, yes, even like some. We get what your saying. I, for one, do not want my house, garage, car, broken into, my children harassed and robbed, my family, my neighbors harassed. I don't want be scared or uncomfortable where I call home.

The grafitti is wrong. Kids are stupid and obnoxious, and do things wrong - that's how they learn. Of course, it's not okay, and I'm sure as they mature they will be embaressed by their actions, just as most kids are. Like I said, no one has to teach them to hate, sometimes it just happens, and kids and teenagers don't want to be pushed around in their own neighborhood. Nor do the adults for that matter. It's scary.

Mixer, perhaps you can seek out some black families, maybe these particular ones on Whipple and take some of your relentless energy and discuss their less-than-acceptable behavior and some of their visitors' behavior and maybe they will see the light. Please don't respond or outline anything here - I see where you are coming from and it is NOT where I am coming from so don't waste your time.

Best I can compare it is seeing some of these hoodlums walk by my house is the equivalent of me strolling through Englewood. I don't like it, that's why I don't go there.

Sorry for rambling.

1 was for biting an on-duty in uniform Sgt. of Police....the others had to deal with these scum bags threatening residents by stating that they were taking over the block, and that they were going to light the block up.

As stated in the other post, Don't believe me-use FOIA and check it out...Main stream media fails to report these facts.

Integration is a man-made concept to which society has given the old college try, but let's face it. It's doomed to failure and disappointment. Why? Because racism is innate to all living things.

You don't see ducks flying with geese. A pack of wolves doesn't want to join up with a herd of turtles. Buffalo have no interest in living with goats. You can't argue this! I'm sorry, but it's natural to want to be with your kind!

I'm all for equal rights and I wish all the other races well, but I want to live with and associate with my kind.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You are going to call white man an animal. It is simply people who want to live in their neighborhood with people who share their same views and interests, who want to raise their kids in a safe neighborhood, who want to wave to their neighbors, not be AFRAID of your neighbors. It doesn't matter the color, it just seems to be that some different races seem to be the ones causing crime. THAT MAKES SOMEONE AN ANIMAL?

It is those people who are so quick to criticize others who are the ones who are so ignorant to see what people are actually saying. People are worried about their safety!!! Listen to what people are trying to say! It's not mean or hateful, it's people scared for themselves and their children - not a bunch of animals!!!

To Nipsy, I like your quiet tone. You must not have been raised here or you would know, unfortunately, yes, young white men in particular used to chase young blacks out of parks throughout the area in the 70's for sure. I witnessed it personally. They also used to go on driving runs through neighborhoods east of us & knock side mirrors off of cars with bats. It was a long time ago. Things like that did not get reported and I am glad things have changed and black people are not assaulted just for crossing an imaginary color line.

MIXER said...

To In and Around,
I work. I have worked since I was 15. I am older than that now.
I know black people from my past, work, school, the neighborhood, my childrens school, sports & getting involved in the community. Pretty much the black people I know well are middle class, that is what I am & that is who I know, it's natural. My children play with different types of kids at all parks. It's whatever mood we're in or who we're meeting. There are black children in ALL parks in Bev/MP & Mt.G.I don't plan my childrens diversification it happens naturally. They gravitate towards children they like and it happens to be all races & ethnicities. I'm not counting or keeping track.

We can't compare our experiences growing up with a childs experiences today. I didn't socialize with black kids when I was young because it wasn't done. I can't help what happened when I was young & under my parents control. I'm an adult now & can make my own choices & help my children make theirs.

It's unfortunate you lived in neighborhoods where things changed drastically. It almost happened here. My parents could have moved in the 70's when everyone thought the neighborhood was going to change,(my parents came from a neighborhood that had changed), but they didn't & they watched all their relatives move to the burbs & they are still running! They picked the wrong burbs to move to! When you think you have to live with only white people your gonna have to keep on a-move-in! My parents house & the homes of those that stayed are worth more than the uninsulated, suburban boxes of drywall and bricks that lack any style, character or history. All I am saying is that if people stay and make the neighborhood better by embracing change & maintaining their homes then the neighborhood will be stronger & better & people won't have to run from good neighbors with different color skin. Hold people accountable no matter what their race & the people that want to live like scumbags will eventually move out because their house will be worth more than they ever thought and they will sell & move to a less expensive home!

In all of the areas you mentioned the crime followed the change in home values. The homes dropped in value because people left in droves when they saw just a few people of color move in. It was a different time and generation. Values dropped even more and the new people that could only afford these even cheaper homes really gave them even more reason to be afraid because they were of another class. It was a time and place and it happened. It doesn't mean it will happen again or happen here. If we don't understand & appreciate history we are doomed to repeat it. If we are afraid of the initial people of a different color than the same snowball effect will occur.

It's unfortunate that there are big, cheap houses in 60655. That could result in a bad neighbor of any color. We can't interview or select our neighbors no matter what color they are. But if someone "undesireables" move in regardless of color they should be held accountable. If they are, then eventually they will move out because they won't be happy either. All of the decent law abiding white and black neighbors of 60655 can stay put & hopefully mention the vacant house to one of their decent friends,(cops and firemen and city workers included),to buy. That's really all you can hope and pray for.

MIXER said...

To In and Around,
Finally, just because some black people are racist & un friendly it still doesn't make it right. Like you said, "Live and let live" be friendly & open to those that are and try not to worry about the others or possibly consider extending your self first. I think alot of black people have their guard up to whites & I don't blame them. When they meet us they are not sure if they are meeting a "good one or a bad one". Not because of what our distant ancestors did "200 years ago" because of what was enforced by our government in OUR lifetime & most definitely in our parents. They were legally identified as 2nd class citizens. That was reflected in the mind & attitudes of whites then and it still is now. It wasn't that long ago. I find that if I make the extra effort to be friendly, it is 99.9% returned with often surprising results. They let their guard down & you see the person behind the color. That's how I meet people to socialize with of ALL races and ethnicities.

Englewood will be gentrified as soon as the Olympics are confirmed! It won't be by do gooders it will be by opportunists and investors. Mixer ... I also grew up in the
60's / 70's and you are right when the black teens came to our neighborhood to take over the basketball court they were chased out, cars were damaged, no reports were filed and no media throng desended on the neighborhood. I also remember when they did come (Usually 20-30 strong, they would chase us out of the park proclaiming that it was their park now !!) This spurred on the retaliatory violence by the older guys in the neighborhood. I remember vividly taking the Lake street "L" with my Mom and sister's in the winter to go downtown to look at the decorated Christmas window's and being confronted on the platform by a group of black youth's who told my Mother "Hey bitch, this is our hood ... how would like it if we throw your kid's on the tracks ... you don't use this train no more" Needless to say my Mother was terrified and we never used it again. Mixer ... The main problem with the African American community(and you may or not agree) is a lack of leadership to shape the direction of poverty stricken communities. Generally sucessful black leaders become corrupt and therefore lose the confidence of the community, who almost immediately blame the white community for "for keeping a brother down." Black leadership in the Chicago area has been nothing less than a joke. Todd Stroger is on his way out, hopefully, after turning County government into such a mess that it may not ever recover. Now having said that white leadership is no less inspiring, ie. the felony governor's club as well as city leaders. Our mayor is not concerned with working people in the city, only completing his legacy of bringing the Olympics to Chicago. The black community is looked down upon by white's in this city because of how they live in their communities and they readily accept that way of life. The good people in those communities far outweigh the bad. How do I know this? I have lived and worked in racially changing and racially charged neighborhoods all my life. If those neighborhoods would rise up and say "We will not stand for the violence in our neighborhood, we will not stand for the drug dealing in our neighborhood, we will not stand for the desolate way our neighborhoods look, ex. Engelwood, the Westside." Then the respect would be overwhelming.

Village Voice said...

Part II -

I would call on President Obama to start programs to energize these communities. You are on public assistance? (White, Black, Hispanic) Then you must as a condition of your receiving money from the government attend training in the trades, parenting classes, children MUST attend schools and conduct will hold you accountable to receive funds from the government. I have been asked "where would this training be held?" Well for one, park district field houses in Chicago lie dormant during the day, turn them into trade training centers. Years ago in this country our forefathers ventured west and received land to build on. It was called homesteading. could we not do that in our big cities. Building's lie vacant ... lot's remain empty ... you want to put people to work? Then make America rise to show how strong we really can be. Let us build, restore, rehabilitate communities here in America. We are doing it in Iraq, We did it in Japan after World War Two. Were we successful? I would say so... What do we buy in this country? Toyota, Honda, Sony, Toshiba, need I go on? Japan's uneployment rate is at 5% as of April 2009. The United States is 9.4% as of April 2009. China with the largest population in the world only has 4.3% unemployment. Eliminate immigration, it is taxing our resources beyong our limits. In closing today I would like to recommend a book for all to read. (Scary I know because it would mean you would have to turn the TV off) But give it a shot. "America Becoming: Racial Trends and Their Consequences, Volume 1" It's 560 pages. Everyone have a great and hopefully peaceful day and let me share this Irish blessing:

May those who love us, love us.

And for those who don't love us,

May God turn their hearts.

And if he can not turn their hearts,

May he turn their ankles,

So we may know them by their limping.

May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.

Gosh, if I were gone you could talk about such socially relevant topics as, "the mean ladies at S & T" and "who the latest owner of Wiseguys is"..maybe you should check out another post. We may be typing a little too fast for you here.
...................................
Could give a shit about your feelings to be honest. You're not wanted in the neighborhood and you're not wanted on the post. BUT it's an open post and that's up to in and around, not me! I'm sure everyone here would agree that the blog was successful way before you got here so don't go taking ANY credit....you certainly haven't earned it.

Village Voice.....

Along with your second comment, I'd also like to add a tad bit of a recommendation I've seen back and forth in e-mails. Why not have people on unemployment, financial aid, etc. take random drug tests?

Village Voice said...

Drug testing would be a good idea, but would not feasable, cost effective and would be a strain to the already overburdened public health care. Who would pay for the testing ... We would of course, the taxpayer.

Couldn't they deduct it from their first unemployment, financial aid, etc. installment? Make it a condition as part of receiving the benefits. I envision people going through the regular process to get the benefits and once processed, handing them a cup to turn in their sample before they leave.

I'm female, not at all agressive or a bully. If I'm offensive, it's because you and your race deserve it! I love my job and rarely have bad days here....busy, but not bad. My sex life is amazing since you asked...at least once a day and sometimes twice. (Not that it's any of your business)
You make a claim that you're the only good topic of conversation on the blog and I very firmly disagreed....PERIOD! If you think it's so boring, why'd you get on to begin with other than stir up the pot with your race bullshit.

I don't think it's boring I think your interesting, you should be a case study. Someday people with attitudes like yours will be extinct and it's nice that you are documenting yourself for all time!

Village Voice I agree with alot, pretty much all, of what you are saying but I do want to point one thing out. Black people that have made it out of the lower class have done so either because they came from an established middle class background, which does exist, they were assisted by affirmative action or they just somehow literally got out by working their asses off against all odds. Now that they have gotten out they are then overwhelmed with the emotional, financial and physical burden of helping their own. It's just too big of a job. Imagine if a white person won the lottery and all of their poor white relatives came out of the woodwork looking for a hand out, hand up whatever. That is, I imagine, the life of a moderately successful middle class black person. I am sure that is why the black politicians get all political instead of only helping their own it's just too much. I don't know the answer but I believe it starts with the children. We have to insure that black children have the same education, support system, healthcare, positive role models and opportunities as their white counterparts. If we do that it may take another generation or two but at least it's a start with a light at the end of the tunnel.

I understand your frustration with Mixer, I and many others here feel just the same as you. However, don't feed the troll. You upset yourself for nothing. She/he is not worth the aggravation. This is what she wants, to bait, cause controversy and get people riled up. If no one responds to her, she will get tired of answering her own posts.

I find it interesting that many people think I stirred up the pot in regard to racism. Hmmmm.. If you go back to May open post you will see the most obnoxious, rude degrading, offensive, un civil, un intelligent comments possible in regard to the interaction between people commenting in 60655 and black people they come across. So racist comments were flying all over the place before I started commenting it was just ONE SIDED. So now that someone is saying, have the discussion, protect your neighborhood, do what you have to do to keep it safe and nice..but you don't need to generalize and bash ALL black people in the process, I am stirring the pot! If you can read, you can see, I am not stirring the pot. I am trying to bring some sense of civil discussion and information to the situation just as Village Voice seems to as well as others who have commented against racist language. It's just about being a decent human being to ALL people not picking and choosing. Ultimately, it would be nice if more people in 60655 could discuss the plight and or situation in regard to the black community and other poor communities without dropping down to the level of pond scum in the process.

This will be a lengthy stay, so the cards as well as prayers would be greatly appreciated.

I need to vent....this morning, while driving thru Beverly, I was backed into a person who decided to park her Chevy tahoe directly in front of me....no where for me to go...cars on the side of me, in back of me...so I honked my horn hoping she would stop. She did not stop...she hit my car. I drove around her and parked. Yes, I was extremely angry, and I yelled I can't believe she hit my f&^*in car!!!!!!! She got out of her car like it was no big deal...saying that she was parking and I should have known that, blah blah blah...I told her I wanted her info and she got defensive, throwing the This is why I hate all white people....I told her don't go there, that had nothing to do with anything...The cops came, I let her give her side of the story...He then asked me and I told him my side...SO, She had no insurance and her license was out of date...imagine that....The cops took our info and went across the street to finish his report. I sat in my car and was talking to my husband on the phone..I could hear her talking to her friend about how dare I think I am better than her...I hung up with my husband and stepped out of my car to listen to her...She was trying to get me to react..."She just wanted my info because she;s disrepectful...blah, blah...My blood was boiling, I could have easily talked back but I got back in my car and rolled up the windows and turned my air on....When I walked across the street to get my copy of the report, she was saying something about the blood of Jesus Christ... Needless to say, I did not receive any tickets...she received 4 or 5...Nothing to do with the color of my skin.
I don;t like the fact that my name and address are on her copy of the tickets she got...
I feel better now...
