Anyone going to Music Under the Stars Sunday Night? I am sure Sweet Escapes would love to see you there!

Cupcakes and Fireworks... nice combo!

Dan Hynes is going to run for governor. Like his father, he will be good for the neighborhood.

Parent of the Year. This is the type of parenting that is going on and is also the reason kids think this is OK to behave in this manner. I think the cops should get involved with this much like an incident that happened a few months ago with girls fighting on the playground.

July 30, 2009 1:42 PM

I didn't type the post that this person responded to, but it made me think about how much has changed over the years.

Back in the day I used to box Golden Gloves. I enjoyed it for a while, then grew out of it. Once I did a round in the old Fire Dept gym at Navy Pier and was given tips by Angelo Dundee.

When I went to Brother Rice and got into a fight, I never got suspended. More often than not they would make me and the other party come to the gym after class, put on a pair of boxing gloves and settle our dispute.

A lot of kids want to be known as good fighters. You don't get picked on or teased. If they get their bells rung, they usually either get better at fighting or stop.

The police are not the answer. One reason why there is such a backlog of calls for police service is that parents are relegating their responsibilities to the authorities.

In 007 and 008 the overwhelming number of calls involve stupid domestics where the police are expected to be the parent, the adviser, the babysitter, the nose wiper, and so on. It is bullshit.

I'm not advocating the fighting, but these kids want to fight. If you don't want them to, keep them home. The police should not be a substitute for parents.

Saint Xavier has been a great neighbor in this community for 50 + years. What has happened over there lately is a bit disturbing. They are making a bad public relations blunder with the Ben & Jerry's partnership for sure. But now to make matters worse, they are having that loud mouth professor from Harvard (Let's see how many you Policeman recognize the name, "Henry Louis Gates". Ring a bell at all? He is going to make a speech at the winter commencement ceremony. Start voicing your opinions at www.sxu.edu. Where have all the Catholic values that all the banners around the neighborhood claim that you still teach gone? In fact, forget about e-mailing the university, send off a letter to the Sisters of Mercy and let them know what you think about the way the school that they founded has been being managed lately.

The American Catholic Church is a shambles. It is a rudderless ship full of bewildered passengers.

A majority of catholics voted for Obama - even though he is against almost everything the Catholic Church teaches. But the ingrained catholic "guilt" forced them to vote for the celebrity "minority."

Today's U.S. Catholic administration openly supports illegal immigration, denounces law enforcement and encourages anti-American & racist activist priests like Phleger.

The church is becoming more liberal day by day as it struggles to become more "popular." Ironically, this will only make it less popular.

Let them fight? How about teach them not to fight or bully others or how to behave when they are bullied? Maybe when they grow up and someone has the sprinkler on their own sidewalk and they don't like it they can just go over and fight them over it. Better yet just turn block parties into fighting matches. Don't like your neighbor? Go fight him/her. You are an idiot. Parenting is teaching your kids how to behave not telling them to go deal with it with their fists. Cops have to deal with the kids whose parents didn't parent them. Much like the ghetto. Oh what the hell, let's just give them guns too!

Has anyone else noticed lately how much more 'ghetto' MTG has become? We have canadiens crossing the street against the lights expecting traffic to just slam on the brakes or wait for them to bee-bop across, we have mobs of kids fighting in the park every day, shots fired over a break in (I still don't know the details of that one) and just the other day I see a guy selling home made sno-cones on the sidewalk near Kennedy park. Hmmm...I see all of this same shit working out east. And, more and more properties are being rented out. We are going to lose this neighborhood if we keep tolerating nonsense. Give em an inch....

This coming Wednesday, August 5th, the Chicago Olympic Committee will be hosting an open meeting for community residents that are interested in learning more about our city’s bid to host the 2016 summer games here in Chicago.

The meeting is in the “Butler Reception Room” at Saint Xavier University at 7:00 PM. If you need more information on this, you can contact Fran Hurley at the Mt. Greenwood 19th Ward office by calling (773) 238-8776 or e-mail her at fhurley@cityofchicago.org.

In my opinion, hosting the Olympics is a losing proposition for the taxpayers of Chicago. Mayor Daley is cutting jobs, salary’s and benefits for city workers under the guise of being broke, yet is still going to guarantee profits to the Olympics using OUR money.

If he refuses to listen to the will of the people that oppose this and insists on having these games here, let him and the City Council guarantee these profits personally using their own homes, bank accounts, other personal assets and pensions to back it up.

The only ones that stand to benefit from any of this are the “Clouted” Contractors and the corrupt city officials that will be getting kickbacks under the table in return for huge contracts being awarded. Besides, Mayor Daley made it quite clear that the only people that are even allowed to bid on some of these city projects are “Minority Contractor’s,” which as of last week includes special status for “Gays.” What happened to the EQUALITY everyone wanted so badly? Personally, I don’t care what race, gender or sexual orientation anyone is, discrimination is discrimination in any color. To give ANY preferential treatment to ANY group of people under ANY name or description, is nothing more than plain old “discrimination.”

Regardless if you’re for the games or against them, here is your opportunity to let the Olympic Committee, Mayor Daley and all the other politicians in Chicago know how you feel about the 2016 Olympics. Whining about what’s going on won’t make a bit of difference, come on out and express your opinion………LOUD & CLEAR!

Why do we have the blue recycling carts???? Our block has not been picked up for almost a month

Anonymous said...

Teens, mob action, fights, shots fired?, who-knows-what; Where should they go? Where can they go? Where are they welcome? Why don't the local schools open their gyms at night? What ever happended to Battle of the Bands? Know where we hung out back in the day? Mt Greenwood Park because we knew no one would call the cops (and that was in the 1980's!) Nothing changes. Maybe us old folks should head up there to hang out with our Strohs and boomboxes. Won't seem so cool to them then.

FYI: Just found out that young girl got mugged at 110th & Homan last night (Sat. 8/1/09) at 11:15 pm in front of her house. Took cops 1 hour to come. Two young mexicans threw her on the ground and stole her purse.

In Chicago this July, 42 people were shot and killed, while an additional 183 were shot and wounded

In Afghanistan, 47 U S military were killed and an additional 199 were wounded.

Wrap your head around that for a second...
42 killed here, 47 there.
183 wounded here, 199 there.

Now for the incredible part...
Chicago's numbers are for 1 to 30 July.
Afghanistan's are for the entire year 2009!

Bring on the Olympics... of DEATH !

This was a pretty site: a black couple sitting in the 7/11 parking lot on 103rd and Sawyer around 5:40 pm. Driver was drinking cans of beer and the female passenger was drinking whiskey. Tried to get out of the car and fell multiple times. But managed to stumble into the store to get more booze. Called 911 and waiting for 30 minutes...no one showed up and the car drove away. Makes you feel all warm the fuzzy. RIDICULOUS!

I would love to give some suburban insight. I am a man in his early thirties, who did not grow up in any city neighborhood. However I have a young daughter who thouroughly enjoys Mt. Greenwood park and I take her there at least twice a week. I would like to post some comments, but I don't know if they will post. I've tried before and it never worked. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or what

That is so true! Look at the girl that forwarded her boyfriend/prom date a picture of her chest. He forwarded it on to his buddies who forwarded it on to theirs and they were arrested for pornography because they were 18 and the girl was 17.

This entry went through so you must have been doing something wrong. Unless inappropriate, InandAround posts almost everything. Mt. Greenwood Park is a huge hangout and while there are a lot of bad things going on, there are good kids not getting involved. I would recommend you letting her know your aware of bad behavior there, not accuse her of being involved and trust her to use her best judgement. The only problem is the cops can't see everthing and will accuse all kids...sorta like guilty by association (can't blame them). I guess your damned if ya do and your damned if ya don't.

I just want to let everyone know that my son's cell phone while they were playing baseball at the fields behind the Ag School. A bus load of animals got dumped off to play baseball. His phone and his friends phones were stolen. I went up there to confront the animals and of course I got the stupid look like they didn't know what I was talking about. They insisted I was a crazy white bitch, but whatever. The problem is that all these kids were playing ball and got invaded by the animal and took over where they didn't belong. Most of these kids are policeman kids. One dad called the squad car to come up to the fields, but once again the police were a no show. Then 2 hours later my cell phone rings because the animal "fount" my kids phone and demanded a reward for finding it. I told the predator that I would not get a reward for stealing my son's phone. They are everywhere and can not be controlled. Thanks Ginger for not having the police protection that we tax payers deserve, but keep making it easy for the no good animal that gets everything handed to them because of my hard work. YES, I AM A RACIST!!!!!!!

The same thing happened to my son when he was playing basketball at the Salvation Army. I called there and was told they don't have a sign in sheet for kids, they just let anyone play. Shame on them! My son said there was a large group of black kids there. They had to dig through his bag to find it because he had it hidden in an inside pocket. Animals....YES they are! I text my son's phone telling them that it had GPS and I reported it to the cops. Not sure if they got scared, but it was worth a shot!

That is a nice thought... but, too many in this neighborhood would rather sit back and whine about how things should be done and how it is everyone else's fault but won't get off the butt or barstool to do anything about it.

Just like folks complaining about everyone else's kids causing trouble and not their little "innocent" Johnny (who happens to be the ringleader).

It is much easier to complain than to do.

I'd want to know if my kids were causing trouble whether a note, in person or even an email. If my kids were on youtube, I would hope someone would let me know. Don't confuse the messenger as someone who complains about others. They are only doing what they would hope you'd do for them, keeping you informed to protect you kids.

I must admit, I am a little surprised at the amount of liberal thinkers in the Mt.Greenwood area, or at least on this blog. My surprise is based soely on some of the comments on this post. I maybe wrong, but I'm sure you're all out there. P.S.- "crazy white bitch" Before you label yourself a racist ask yourself this, if the bus full of "animals" were white, would you have confronted them. If so, that makes you an outraged parent, not a racist.
