Open Post 8/20 through 8/26

Here's your open post.

Please remember we are all neighbors and should treat each other with respect.

I am getting mentally exhausted reading all the negative comments. Do we all really hate EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING so much...geesh. Let's try to remember that other people's opinions may not be ours and that's okay, got to love America, and read and respond to such with an open mind and a light heart.

Think of this, there are 41 comments for the BBQ post, and over 130 comments in open post, most concerning blacks and parent coaches. THERE ARE ONLY 4 regarding Officer Cole (injured PO) and NONE regarding the Y-me tournament (fundraiser for cancer).... that is a sad statement of what interests us.

Thanks.

Did everyone in the RecycleBank program activate their blue bin(s)?

It is a great program and many of the coupons earned can be used at local businesses.

Does anyone remember Mt Geeenwood Records and Tapes? That place was awesome! I was around 12 and had a crush on Nancy, the girl who worked there. I remember buying Def Leppard Pyromania on vinyl there!

Easy there, blogmaster. Or should I say Blogmistress. oh whatever, I'm bad at being politically correct.

My grandmother came over here on the Lusitania. My grandfather was a Chicago Fire Captain horrendously wounded in the 1920's.

The first time I was in a shootout I didn't feel like I was a hero and I didn't shit myself. I just went home in a daze and hugged my kids until they said, "Hey, let up, Dad."

Now my son is on his third tour in one of the worst shitholes in the world. Every day I don't want to answer the phone and I don't want to answer the doorbell. I would die tomorrow in his place. But please God let him come back marry soemone and have children like I did.

The point is this: We don't do what we do for profit or persoanl gain. There are no rewards, as you well know, except for the ones given us by our Faith.

Like SecondCityCop, SecondCitySarge, and the other bloggers, you have created one hell of a blog, without any personal gain. You are an agent of change. As such, you have opened yourself up to criticism and the endless negativity that pervades ourt human spirit.

All I can say is, God Bless You and keep up the good work. Like any parent, you know you do the right thing because it's - well - it's the right thing.

Take great pride in what you do - look at your kids and know that you have worked hard to make a better life for them - because you have.

I guess to clarify my past post, I could care less about paying $45 to make my child happy. I also love Mckiernan Park, all I am saying is why once again is it up to us the working tax payer to pay for other areas that don't work. I love everything about Mckiernan Park and would not change a thing about it, I was refering to the unequal cost accross the city ,thats all!!

Am I the only one mad as hell about the later start time at Cassell?

Cassell sent a flyer to parents announcing the new start time would be 9:15am. Line up time is 9:10.

Many people had a hard enough time getting to work by 9am at the old start time but, how in the heck do you get to work by 9am if your child start time isn't until 9:15am?

How Ron Huberman can issue an edict that makes one school start later to "save" money on buses is beyond me. (and yes, the decision came from Mr. Huberman - not the parents, nor the LSC, nor the faculty nor staff - none had a say)

Cassell only has 20-30 students max ride the bus out of the 320+ student body.. and that small subset of students can dictate the start time? That can't be right?!?

It is not like Cassell is the only school in the area that needs buses - there are buses in the neighborhood earlier.. Keller starts at 7:45am (kids on buses dropped off at 7:30am)and Mt. Greenwood starts at 8am (kids on buses dropped off at 7:45am) - so where are the buses between the time the drop of kids at Mt. Greenwood and the 9am drop off time at Cassell - Mt. Greenwood is not that big - the buses must be going elsewhere and picking our kids up last.

I think it is unfair to put parents at such a bind to have to find childcare or "make do" in these hard economic times. Some could potentially lose their job if they are continually late due to the late start time.

I won't even to get in to the ramifications of the 3pm dismal.

I am very upset and would like to know if I am they only one?

in and around: you are wise and noble. and unselfish. I too got a little hot under the collar. I'm a fan and a regular looker, not a regular writer - i think you call it poster. I was going to give up reading this because of the name calling. I am not saying people have to agree = that's the beauty of this. discousre, thoughtful, engaging converation. Too many here attack anybody who is not on the same page, completely, and consistently. I don't blame people for not posting their names - I work in the neighborhood AND if have teenagers. I would never let on who I really am. But some use anonymity as a cover and from the darkness and privacy of their homes resort to some real nastiness, maybe because they have deep rooted inhibitions and issues and anger. whatever. sorry for the ramble. In particular, the use of the word liberal. to tell you the truth, I am not sure what label i would wear because i give a lot of thought to issues/people before i vote and i don't think i was stamped out with a cookie cutter. People use the word liberal here with as much venum and the term child-molester. "if you disagree with me you are a filthy liberal" I am not a hyde parker or an oak parker, but I just don't have the fear and loathing that some, actually several, have. I would like to hear your thoughts, but without being shouted at and demeaned.

Well fellow bloggers, it is nice to be part of this community, in real life and online

Brian-unfortunately there is no way to control the ananymous sign on. People can sign on with any name they want. Things will be changing..I have tried to let almost everything through, but I realized, I don't have to, why? Because I'm the boss...LOL.

As for the nastiness, sometimes we get caught up in the moment and tempers flare...we sometimes have to step back and see what is important.

As for who I am, some people know me and know that I am the person hiding behind the blog. I hear from them a lot when there is interesting news. Having two kids, I'm all over this neighborhood. I started this blog and emailed it to roughly ten friends 9 months ago...this is where it is now. (Thanks to all of you faithful readers). I am a regular person, with a job and family. I just read the comments and push a little button to post..I scour the newpapers and do a little thinking for myself once in a while. For the most part, I stay out of it when it comes to my opinions. Now if I could figure out a way to retire on this...

Pete's Fresh Market-where's it going to be? Never been, but I'm interested.

Thanks for the blue bin information. I recycle like crazy.

To the anonymous poster- God speed for your son's safe return.

You my friend would be considered bi-partisan.

There is a good chance that I would disagree w/ some of your ideals. That's the great thing about our freedoms. 'I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ANY AND ALL VETERANS FOR MY FREEDOM'. I would hope that you disagree with some of mine. I don't look at this as fighting, I look at this as an example of how wonderful this country is!

Just so you know- I don't know what I am considered. I believe in womens' rights to abortion, homosexuals' rights to marriage, and I am somewhat of an atheist.

However, I believe I should be able to carry a gun in public, I believe that government programs ruin society, and I believe affirmative action is a nightmare for the black man/woman. Not to mention that P.E.T.A. can go F##k themselves.

So, I consider myself liberterian, but die hard conservatives will be happy to know that I will push my kid in the "right" direction. Currently, she's enrolled at St. Catherines. From there, it's up to her. I just don't think that values are learned from someone named "FATHER". They are learned from PARENTS.

So in closing- Thank you for contributing to this blog. Just- don't call me an 'idiot'
That's rude. Not to mention that there is a good chance that I am more intelligent than you. (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.)

School start-time solution:
1. Begin by contacting parents who may also be affected by the later start time and also those that aren't. Unite together to come up with a proposal.
2. Come up with a proposal for the principal of the school to offer some type of early morning care. I'm sure there are a lot of parents stuck in the same position. There might also be some parents needing extra income. For instance, have an early morning program at 8:15 a.m. at school. Each parent could pay $3 per day when needed for early drop-off. The revenue generated could pay for a supervisor of the morning program whether it be current employees, parent helpers, etc. Another idea would be to get parents to volunteer in the morning to supervise students. 2-3 parents sign up for one day each week. Rotate the schedule, get more parents involved, etc...problem solved. If this doesn't work, get together with some parents to create a carpool arrangement. The school, PTA, LSC, this blog could probably assist in making connections.
3. Cassell is not the only school affected by bus rerouting. There are many bus companies and many routes all over the city. Schools like Mt. Greenwood serve students with low incident disabilities. That means there are not a lot of schools that provide the specialized services to those students. The students may come from all over the city. Same goes for Keller; the students can come from all over the city.
4. Finding childcare should not be a bind or "having to make due" because the expectation of parenthood is that if you are going to work outside the home, you will eventually have to find childcare that works for your schedule and the children's schedule. Work schedules change, school schedules change, life changes. I encourage you to be proactive in the communication with other parents and the school. Solutions can be formulated and implemented if you start the process now. hang in there, I know it is frustrating, but you can do it.

..............

I would start to look into the wards these kids are bussed in from and what possible aldermen, activists, friend and/or reverend got a hold of CPS to get a whole school change its start time for a handful of students. This is a case of clout. Nothing new though. Mt Greenwood is very overcrowded and CPS buckled to the Alderman to keep one handfull of students from Beverly from moving to another school. If it were STC or QM another wing would be added to the schools magically. CLOUT CLOUT CLOUT. Seriously, dig deeper about Cassel. There is a story here.

Thanks for your comment regarding Cassell - I have already spoken to one mom that is equally upset - she is drafting a letter to send to parents.

She says she has spoken to the school, a member or two of the LSC, and members of the PTT. I believe she has reached out to the ward office as well.

She gave me this email to post if you would like to join the effort to voice your concern.

Regarding Cassell Start time...
I have spoken to the school as well since it will impact me too. They said they sent out the time to let parents know that a change is coming and that the time of 9:15-3 was the latest they had been informed of from the board. They said it is still not set in stone, as they are working with the board and the ward to see if any other alternatives are available. They are hoping to have the final times secured by next weeks registration.

I'm so excited about Pete's Produce! I'm tired of driving to 55th and Kedzie to get my fruit. It's so cheap and good there! As far as the rest of the store.....it has good authentic Mexican food, but everything else is just as expensive as Jewel/Dominicks.

OMG.....Mt. Greenwood Records and tapes was the bomb! I remember going there once a week because they had the sheet on their counter with the top 20 songs.

Ed Vree.....brings back good family memories! Going there with my siblings and my parents. How 'bout Woolworth? Sitting there for lunch on the little blue spin chairs! Sugar shack, Reds, Neumans, etc., etc. Those were the days! I can't say the same with the businesses we have now. Bummer!

*********************

No recyclebank is not just another well-connected private company.

While RecycleBank IS a private company they are not connected to Chicago and they are not diverting monies. They get paid by the recycling company - In this case RMC (Resource Management Company).

RMC sells the recycled goods and thats how they make a profit. They pay RecycleBank because they have more good coming in to be recycled so they make more money.

RecycleBank paid to have the trucks retrofitted with the proper equiptment for this program - no cost to the city.

The city saves money because the more waste diverted from the landfill saves the city money that would paid to dispose of it.

The homeowner that fills the blue bin wins because they get points for each pound of recyclable waste they send to the recycler. These points can be used for discounts and coupons for businesses in the community or online. You can also donate your points to not-for-profits.

Large chunks or Mt. Greenwood was selected for this trial run for the RecycleBank program becaue or volume of recycled waste pales compared to other areas of Mt. Greenwood and most of Beverly.

They figure if they can give incentives to us to recycle more - than the city saves more money.

I guess bribes work!

I signed up - and got my free gift card (missed out on Sox tickets) and I have already earned close to 320 points!!

It is a no brainer - I get free stuff and discounts for something I do already!

If you don't want to participate that fine but, maybe your neighbor would like to get your points?

Or do you just not recycle at all?

as far as cassell and the start time...that really sucks...but instead of focusing on the clout thing right now...focus on the parent patrol like the blogger, August 20, 2009 7:32 AM, said. this blogger had good suggestions. i'm sure there are several moms, grannies, dads, that would love to help out. we live in a good community and we should be able to count on each other in a time of need. even if your start time does not change...you should think about a parent patrol anyway...more adult eyes on the children...the better off they are!

then when all that is said and done...check out the clout thing! but get your kids situated first!

Anonymous said...

well if lose my job over the late start time I will have plenty of time to patrol - and I'll be living on the streets... sorry that is my primary focus and IS getting my kids situated.

And CLOUT has NOTHING to do with the late start time at Cassell,

There actually was a Pete's Fresh Market in Evergreen Park about 15 or more years ago. I think it was the first one around. It was on 95th Street on the south side of the street about 2 blocks east of Utica. I loved it then and never could understand why they closed.

Did anyone go to the CAPS meeting?

Anonymous said...

As far as the recycling program goes, I have been saying since it started that the city could make some good money off of it. Now you tell me that this is true. We are only not losing money with the landfills. Why couldn't the city drop off the waste and make money for it? Richie says we have no money. This could be a steady stream of income. No, he would rather let one of his politically connected friends make the profit and continue the status quo.
That is my problem with our politicians, especially our Democrat friends (the Republicans are guilty to a lesser extent). They waste our resources and tell us we are broke and need to raise our taxes. If they were to run government more like a business, we would all be better off.

You are right - usually that is how it works. This time the LSC was told this may happen but, they were not given a voice.

The school has been fighting the change - as they weren't not given a voice in the matter either. This came as a "cost-savings" directive from Ron Huberman. Neither the school, the LSC, the PTT, or the parents were given a voice in the decision.

I sent out a letter to many Cassell parents this morning asking them to forward the letter to Cassell, Ald. Rugai, and to fax to Huberman's office.

I feel we can not sit around an hope this change will go away. We need to show how we feel about this. The more parents that voice their concerns and objections - the stronger the argument the school has in fighting this change

Dear Blog-master. Keep up the good work. This system seems to work well. If you stop the anonymous bloggers, you will miss valuable info. Some people are afraid of a brick through the front window. Any intelligent person can tell the truth from hate and lies. I grew up in the Marquette Park neighborhood. Got drafted and went to war,Vietnam and seen some horrible things. I could not wait to get home and when I did there was a war here also. Had to move or live in the same battlefield I just left. Got married in St. Bede neighborhood and raised a family and it was happening again. Gangs, shootings, rape, murder, drugs, etc. Moved again out here, the last refuge. Now I see it happening again. These are not the Vietcong but Americans that have no family values or value life. To take what-ever they can just because they can and hide behind racism and don't mess with me because if you do I will cry racist and take your job, home and everything that goes with it. Everyone deserves a place on this planet where they feel comfortable to raise a family, go to church, and worship their God the way they see fit. Not where you are afraid to go to church, raise a family or let your kids play because some gang-banger might have a gun and just start shooting. Read the papers and this is a common thing in the ghetto. Do we want this here? With the way things are going it will happen soon, but lets get our kids grown and educated in the way we were and if they decide to stay here, it's up to them. And to the person with family in the military, may God bless them and you and may they come home with their heads held high and proud of their service to this great country. When I came back to the world, I landed at O'Hare Airport, myself and a few buddies from Chicago. Stopped at a bar in the airport with family and friends that were there to welcome me home and as we were leaving to go to the cars, two a--holes ran up to us and spit on us saying "Underfed, overpaid, babykillers' Welcome Home Pigs." If only I had my M-16 or .45 colt...So happy to see our soldiers get the respect they deserve. May God bless them all.....

They heard me playing with my daughter and started talking (like they were hurrying to pack up). I confronted them, asked them what they were doing. The young black guy was scared shitless, the old white guy was pretending to clean his windsheild and said, "on just a little dirty, just cleaning up". This looked so freakin' suspicious, the black guy was so scared that they got caught, doing what I don't know. I'm thinking this was some sort of sex thing. NOT IN BACK OF MY GARAGE!! I recited the license plate number back to them out loud and placed a 911 call at 6:23. Suspicious activity. License number X38 6965. Grey sedan (possibly a buick but I'm not sure). This is bullshit. This wasn't even in the dark. I mean come on, this made no sense. Keep your eyes open.

He also said that the guys took off running and the officers chased the guys for a couple blocks and caught them! I have been looking for something about this all over the internet & newspapers but haven't found anything. It would be nice to see a post or blog somewhere about a job well done to the 22nd district police! Please let me know if anyone has heard anything!

***************

This was discussed at the 2211 Beat Meeting. Guess Ridge has been broken into 3x. They caught 2 guys with cash register drawers from Calumet Park and 2 guys got away on foot.

August has been a tough financial month with school fees, supplies and uniforms. So what are some of your best cost cutting ideas for the family? I have heard the return of " potluck barbeques " with neighbors have made a huge comeback.

Anytime you cook at home you're going to save some money. Soups, stews, spaghetti, stuff like that stretches and are inexpensive. Skip the drive thru and cook at home.

What hundred block was it? I don't need an exact address. Also which side of 115th, North or South? I'll take a ride around over there when I get back to work.

I'm not the original poster, but I don't think the North side of 115 has alley's does it? I would guess the South side.

Don's is closed. That totally sucks!
He's got a a hand written sign out there thanking everyone. I say everyone should stop by and write a little note to Don on that sign so he can keep it and hang it in his rec room. I was six when Don opened that store so it's gonna be weird not having store there anymore.

Thanks for not giving me any pertinant information. I'm sorry i don't know all of the alleyways in the city. I was just trying to help out in the neighborhood, but I guess you don't want it. I'll still check it out though. I just need to know what hundred block.

Did you read my post? I said I wasn't the one that posted the information to begin with, but that I didn't think the North side had alleys. I never said I didn't want your help.....was trying to narrow it down for you because the original poster of the incident never replied with the hundred block. Geez!!!!!

I wonder if God sent Mary Jo Kopechne to greet old Teddy at the pearly gates. Anyone remember the incident in Chappaquiddick when he drove off a bridge and left the scene of the accident. Oh yea, he also left Mary Jo in the car to drown too. He probably went home to sleep off the booze and just forgot to make the phone call to report the accident that night. OOPS! His punishment for this tragedy, a suspended license. It's nice to be a Kennedy.

I guess we could be thankful that only one poor souls life was lost with Kennedy. Compared to over 4000 poor YOUNG lives that Bush and his gang of warmongers have given to us.

Kennedy deliberately left Kopechne to die because she wanted him to break off with his wife and marry her. The coroner's autopsy was altered to hide the fact that she was pregnant.

Kopechne did not drown in that car. She died of suffocation. One of the divers who recovered her body said she lived in the air pocket for plenty of time for her to be rescued. She died a horrible death.

The sheep continued to vote this clown into high office for 40 years after this event, 40 years in which Congress lost its moral compass, its ethical standards vanished, and presided over a country where the only people you can make fun of (or name in the news media) are white people and Christians.

Kennedy was rich, he was powerful, he was arrogant. What good does it all do him now?

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"

I sure was born during the Viet Nam War. As far as my parents are concerned, my mother would never talk bad about anyone and my dad I don't know about. Next time I'm in Washington D.C, maybe I'll ask him. And that last part you can figure out you A**HOLE!!

What is the cardinal rule? Never talk about politics or religion, it will ALWAYS end up in a heated argument.

Hey, Mr. History Re-Writer. Kennedy voted "Yes" to go into Iraq & Afghanistan. That would make him one of the gang. Oh yeah, I know what you're thinking...Bush "tricked" him! HAHAHA! I guess if we want to believe that one, your guy wasn't very smart, was he?

Don't be scared of the Batman boy - he is harmless.

I'm so glad that the Cassell thing worked out - when parents ban together things can change, it's truly nice to see. I'm a displaced CPS teacher and this overcrowding in some schools and reduced enrollment is an issue in my eyes. Things need to change in CPS - I honestly think it needs to be broken up, one head office for 600ish schools is ridiculous. Sadly, it's run like a business and I wish it was more about the kids!

Just a thought while I am sitting on the beach in Florida right now...instead of calling the police about the bbq's, call for the FD about 'open burning' in the park. They WILL come because they have no choice and E92 usually has nothing better to do anyway. Call it in as rubbish, garbage, whatever you want to call the open bbq's. Let them come and inform them there is no open burns or grills allowed in the park without a permit. When the canadiens don't comply, the FD will call for the PD and when we call, it automatically goes to a priority 1 top of the list call for the cops. Just a thought...
Hope to see most of you all at the sept CAPS meeting
