Taste of Mt Greenwood sounds good. Edison Park has had one for a couple of years and it is a nice time. Any idea on who the food vendors will be?

Anonymous said...

I hope it's not run by those same people who used to put on the Party in the Park thing. What a joke that turned out to be.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the info In and Around.

This is exactly what the neighborhood needs!

Maybe some local food places can establish more business with this.

Looks like stuff for the whole family....we'll definitely be there!

I can't wait for the Taste of Mt. Greenwood. Anyone know who is running it?!

Anonymous said...

Not enough notice.....already have plans. Would have been nice to know in advance. Party in the Park was ran nice before the 100th fiacso.

Anonymous said...

My mistake, I thought it was this weekend. Reading is a skill......Sorry!

Anonymous said...

What '100th fiasco' at party in the park?

cpmom said...

The Chamber is sponsoring...So far the vendors are (tentitively) sp? Fat Tommy's, Rosatis, Wiseguys and Sweet Escapes...I think that is it...Mark your calendars!! Sweet Escapes will be showcasing new sandwiches and will have a special guest for the kids....

Anonymous said...

huh? pet parade? and a blessing? by whom? does ANYBODY know about this?

Anonymous said...

As long as Ben and Jerry's is not involved. We do not want supporters of Cops Killers in Mt Greenwood.

Anonymous said...

The 100 year fiasco went out in debt. No money was made. People brought their own coolers.

Anonymous said...

Blaming the CPD for a business closing? Come on.

Anonymous said...

Martyrs Fest is the same weekend as Taste of Mt. Greenwood

Anonymous said...

Can you have a pet blessing on CPS land?

Anonymous said...

If only we had enough businesses here in Mt Greenwood to have a Taste. Are we going to have accordian tuning and doctors giving free exams? Shop Mt Greenwood First? Where????

Anonymous said...

Hey people, these events are supposed to be fun...stop hating on everyone and everything...If anyone has a thing to say about how the stuff is run, then volunteer to help organize...Ben and Jerry's is not involved...its no where near open...There are many good food shops in Mt. Greenwood...if you don't like any of them, open your own, and then feel free to voice your opinion about everyone else's business///There is no pleasing everyone on this blog..People are trying to make this neighborhood better...stop bitchin and pitch'in.

Anonymous said...

I'd rather go to Martyrs Fest ... this Taste even will probably have, like 5 restaurants? Besides, why the quiet announcement? What'st the big deal on keeping it so mum?

Anonymous said...

What exactly does the Chamber do for the Community other than the Halloween Walk and sponsors Santa for Winter something?

Anonymous said...

Let's see. Local Redevelopment Committee, Chamber of Commerce, Homeowners Association, Civic Association and so on. MAYBE if all these committees could work TOGETHER, this Taste of Mount Greenwood MIGHT be a success.

WOW! All the nastiness is back!!!

If anyone was ever considering moving to the neighborhood or bringing their mom and pop business here and they stubled upon this blog... would you blame them for running as fast as they could in the other direction?

If this is how much respect we show neighbors who in their right mind would want to come here?

geesh!

I am sure that the Chamber is doing their best to put together a great taste this year. The reason for the Taste of Mt. Greenwood is to invite the local neighborhood restaurants to sell their most popular items so everyone has a chance to taste their food. What other kinds of restaurants do you people want to see in this neighborhood???
The fest will be held outside...if it rains, the vendors will be moved inside the Ag...
I am excited to be a vendor at the Taste...

OT - you mention John R. Powers in your other post. On May 25, 1979, an American Airlines DC-10 crashed taking off from O'Hare Airport, causing the largest single aricraft air crash in U.S. history.

Many of the 271 people killed were authors on their way to the American Booksellers Association annual convention in Los Angeles.

Southsider and Author John R. Powers was in a taxi on his way to the airport. He was going to LA to promote his books, "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes..." and "Unorignal Sinner..." and he had a reservation on flight 191.

In the taxi he started feeling odd and thought he might be getting ill and decided not to take the flight.

Maybe it was a bad hot dog the night before...whatever...there's magic in that South Side food.

I cannot get over how a post about family events can turn so quickly. I know people can gripe about whatever they please, but I hardly see anything nice on this blog anymore. Everyone posts anonymously and it's hard to believe that people can be so mean and jump to so many conclusions about things without knowing the facts.

To rkmelissa, I agree with you..Why is it so hard to work as a community? Why do people insist on being so negative without even giving the event a chance? I myself would love to see Mt. Greenwood flourish into a great place to live..I do attend the CAPS meetings,I am involved with my children and their schools, I am also getting involved with the resident's association...doing whatever it takes to make this neighborhood a safe and happy place to live. I hope that the Chamber continues to work towards making more family friendly events happen in the coming months...I guess that some people will never be happy...

The reason more doesn't get done through the chamber, the lrc, the civic assoc., etc. is because the people running these organizations can't get along with each other. Most of these committees have been run with the same 5 or 6 people in the leadership roles for years and they're constantly sniping at the other groups. Add in the alderwoman and all her issues.

Until these groups can learn to get along not much is going to be a success in this community.

Taste of Mt Greenwood sounds like it would be a great family day. The Ag School would be the perfect place, plenty of room for vendors. Some one say a car show, we need more events like this around ! We have quite a few really good food places here, lets have the chance to check out their specials. We should give the Chamber credit for trying something new, we the residents of Mt Greenwood need to patronize our town, pet parade? Everyone's got a dog or two, it'll give the kids and their family pets something fun to do. Sure wish the negativity would stop, lets support this event and others to follow!!!

How come most of the towns around Mount Greenwood have weekly farmers markets and we don't?. This might be something good. People in the community could visit each week and get out and talk with their fellow neighbors. Great way to meet the neighbors too!!

&&&&&&&&&&

Maybe these organizations need new leadership. Who am I kidding, that will never happen. The powers that be would never allow new blood. Are there elections for these groups or are they just "appointed"?

Anonymous said...

I agree with everyone about the negative postings so I say let's all start to find positive things in our neighborhood and post them, ignore the negative posts. There are many wonderful people in our neighborhood. I for one love our neighborhood and even if I did not have to live here I would choose to.

Will the dog owners clean up affter their dogs at this event?

From all the advertising and such I'm seeing around town for this "Taste of Mount Greenwood"....We'll be heading to Martyr's for their fest. It sounds like their committee is more organized and professional in their handling of their events.

Wondering ? said...

Do any of these organizations ever have any meetings open to the public?

It would be interesting to hear what they hope to achieve in the area.

The LRC website is sort of out of date and I can't fine anything about the Chamber of Commerce.

Anyone know anything that's public about any of these organizations?

********************************

Exactly what "powers" are you refering to?

If you are referring to the Alderman - these groups do not fall under the ward office control - she does not have a say in the running of them - and I am sure she too would like them to work together more effectively.

As to the MGLRC.. often spaces on the board open up, have you volunteered to become part of it?

As to the Chamber... if you own a business in Mt. Greenwood you can become a memebr, have you opened one?

As the Residents Assn.. they are always looking for new active members to help out, have you joined?

I can go on...

I know it is very easy to sit back and complain, but until people get off their butts and get involved nothing will ever change.

Do you know that both the LRC and the Chamber are considered delegate agencies from the city and receive monies to pay for salaries.. not much.. but they still get some

Seems to me they both do the same thing for the community. Why do we need both?

Seems to me they both do the same thing for the community. Why do we need both?

The MGLRC is supposed to bring NEW economic development to Mt. Greenwood. Bring in NEW businesses, help with the area's SBIF and facade rebate program (when there is money). Help drive the focus and revitalization of our business district.

The Chamber is suppose to help EXISTING businesses. Help them get licenses, share business ideas, resources in some cases, bring the business community together, and be a resource for the businesses to stay in business.

Together the two should work together to bring a cohesive effort in keeping Mt. Greenwood a growing a vibrant community with a thriving business district.

That is the original idea for the two entities

So in a sense the two groups should be working together sharing ideas and such to improve the whole of Mount Greenwood. But when you look at their directors listed on both of their websites. No one from either group sits on the board of the other group. The only one that does sit on both is the person from Bourbon Street, a business NOT located in Mount Greenwood.

People, Bourbon Street is too located in Mount Greenwood. If it wasn't Ginger wouldn't have all her money begging events there.

I dont think the alderman has a big say in any of the org's except LRC. The person who has the paid position spot has been there for- ever and has done nothing except stall. Try and ask any volunteer board member about what is going on and they have closed lips. Heard they had to sign a document to not to speak of what is going on.No one ever knows when a position is open because they don't let the community know in enough time. This position can be changed but won't be. Closed meetings. They throw a couple of meetings a year for businesses but never asks the public what they want. The Chamber needs some new blood. This is changed from within their own board. They have closed meetings to the public.I see many other communities that contribute to the community not just their few businesses who join the Chamber. The civic assoc. does what here? Don't even know if they meet.
So how about a beginning and at least change the LRC head.

I thought Bourbon street was Merionette Park

Dear 5:19, you are indeed correct. Bourbon is not only NOT in Mount Greenwood, it is not inside the city limits. Merrionette Park, as you stated, is correct.

I think it is great to be having a taste of Mt Greenwood.
The party in the park was a great event and one year it goes bad and everyone has something to say.
Things happen, but they are trying to start something new to help our business and our community. Stop complaing support it and join in. Spread the word, help out where you live instead of trashing it. The event just got started give it a chance people. These people dont get paid to do this and they work there but off trying to make it work. Would you do it for free?
Im sure the answer is no.

-The chamber helps, they work just like the rest of us but they have to hear all the complaining, get ideas rejected.

- For the purse store- I havent seen bin ladan around there so I think were safe- That is ridiculous. If you dont like it dont shop there- Go support the "Prada" store- oh wait theres not one in our community- SHOP MT GREENWOOD FIRST- If you dont like whats here move out, but you seriously called and complained to who- the cpd arent there ACTUAL CRIMES to be worried about.

Use this site to help and better our neighborhood.
Just my opinion.

So when does the LRC paid postion open up? When will we have the opportunity to bring in someone who can actually get things done? In the last LRC newsletter, they claim to already have purchased the parking lot from the city for $1. This newsletter was put out how many months ago? They are just rehashing old news because there is still NO PROGRESS MADE. The Alderman does influence to let us know when the postition is open and backing a new person. Will she do this actually?

Anonymous said...

Years ago the MGLRC had two paid part time positions. An in-charge positions and an assistant. The assistant left sometime ago.

Not sure what the current status is.. does the LRC take less money from the city? Does the paid position remaining work full time and gets more pay?

Any agency that recieve monies from the city must prepare and annual finacial statement and other records to re-apply each year. That annual report should be available to the public on request. If not it can be FOIA'd. If people are that bothered about the money and land holding of the LRC.

Anonymous said...

Still how does one get the paid position on the MGLRC? Is it an elected position or appointed? When does the term expire or does one need to be fired from the position and by whom?

Anonymous said...

I just called Rainbow Cone and spoke to the manager. They are NOT closing.
