This morning I called the Cassell Elementary School and spoke with the Principal to express my concerns regarding Obama’s message to the children scheduled for the first day of school on September 8th.

I have never met or spoken to Mrs. Esposito before, but it didn’t take long to realize that she is a very pleasant and sincere woman, who is dedicated to our children and what is in their best interests.

She was in agreement with me that there is no place for politics in the elementary schools, especially during normal classroom hours, and would not be exposing the lower grade students to this. She also said she was going to speak with her teachers that teach the upper grades as to whether or not any of the classes should be subjected to this at all.

It’s good to know that we still have teachers in our schools that believe in American values and possess the good common sense to “keep our children out of this.”

If your children, or grandchildren will be attending any of our other local schools and you are opposed to this administrations socialist agenda, call their school and voice your opinions. If they still plan on proceeding with making your kids watch this socialist propaganda, you could always keep them home from school on Tuesday.

If you support this administrations antics, that’s entirely your choice, but it should be the parents decision if they want to have their children exposed to this type of systematic brainwashing, NOT the governments. It should also be done after normal school hours and not at the expense of the taxpayers.

At the close of our conversation, she thanked me for calling and surprisingly said that I was the first person that she heard from regarding this issue, and that she was very appreciative of my concerns.

Don't know if we are still going to get info from neighborhood CPD regarding beat coverage and goings on in the area, if any are reading, could you please keep us informed? I do understand though that as police officers, many do not want personal info known, even to the blog owner.
Does anyone posting know if stuff is still happening up at the park?

I see what you put in the profile just like everyone else. However, I am able to block the computer your on. I don't see your PERSONAL stuff. So if someone's a jerk, BOOM, you are blocked. That's the extent of my eye in the sky.

Thank you so very much for the info. I must admit though, I've been under a rock the last 7 days. I will research the whole "Obama message to the children" speech myself. It's probably on your site. My daughter goes to St. Catherines. Should I be worried that this will effect catholic schools, as well as public shools. I'm sure I know the answer, but if you could confirm it for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for the info - have a good weekend everyone.......

Jim, my child attends Cassell as well. I do not see this as "politics" but as a message from our president. I really do not know the CPS policy about this address, but if it is a mandate from Huberman then the principal does not have a choice, and failure to follow the rules is insubordination. We don't always like the rules, but it is not usually a choice we have the luxury to make. Again, I do not know if this is an option or a local school decision. If it is, then the principal absolutely calls that shot. If not, well, I am not comfortable with a principal who picks and chooses what rules to follow. That is a recipe for disaster. Does anybody know if this is a mandate from CPS?

I know it's planned for all the public schools nationwide, but don't know about the parochial schools. You should probably call and ask them. The rectory should be open over the weekend.

I see NOTHING wrong with the President giving an encouraging speech to my kids while they are in school. Too bad many of you are throwing partisan politics into your children's education. God help anyone who would have done this to President Bush while he gave the kids words of encouragement. The republicans would have a bloody fit.

MaryCarol said...

I don't understand why it should be mandated that school children take time from their education to watch Obama. My children will be told if the speech is put on in their classroom they have the right to ask to be excused, in fact I will write a letter excusing them from the classroom during this speech.

inandaround60655 said...

This is my two cents, if the government will not all the Pledge of Alliance in the classroom, then I don't want the government in the classroom either. That goes for the Democratic or Republican government.

Thanks Brian...there are still a lot of hits, people just reading, but the comments are a lot more civilized now. Thanks to the readers and commentors alike. Not much going on recently (which is a good thing).

I'm honestly surprised that CPS is not mandating the speech, I taught in Hyde Park last year and we had Olympic week - the kids were forced to write a paper on why we should have the Olymipics in Chicago and we even had a 2 day assembly. I did get in trouble, because I allowed my kids to write a paper of their choice (for or against) We also held a debate, needless to say this may be one of the reasons why I wasn't asked back to the school. I know not all of CPS HAD to write a paper, but they did circulate example lesson plans that were to be followed throughout the week. My principal chose to follow it exactly. The school I was at was even on tv - this was during the swine flu issue, so of course all teachers had to have sanitizer with them at all times - to be visible by the cameras. Lovely, just lovely. Sorry for my rambling.

I was wondering, since there are so many cops that watch this blog...is there a site or PDF available that explains all the laws of chicago? How does a regular citizen know what he or she can or can't do?

Thanks!

Hi Jackie,

Not only is the Principal of Cassell Elementary acting within her rights by choosing to not expose children to this, she is actually legally bound not to show it.

Federal law specifically forbids Obama, Duncan, or any other officer from exercising “any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system.” You can see for yourself;

http://www.lc.org/media/9980/attachments/20_usc_3403_090409.pdf

Matt Barber, the Director of Cultural Affairs with both Liberty Counsel and Liberty Alliance Action has notified his children’s school to either opt them out of the President’s illegal indoctrination activities on Tuesday, or they will be homeschooled for the day and “taught a lesson on the Bill of Rights.”

Barber said “Not only is this a violation of federal law, it’s just plain creepy. It’s surreal. Obama’s actions here are right out of the playbooks of Saul Alinsky and Chairman Mao. Is this America or Soviet Russia?

You’re absolutely entitled to raise your children any way you choose, but so are we, and I choose not to expose anyone belonging to me to any of this communist rhetoric.

Hey Mr. Obama, “Stay away from my children!”

As far as things happening at the park, they still are. They always will happen until people get up off of their lazy arses and drag themselves to a few beat meetings and make a huge stink. Beat 2212 (the prestigious Christ the King parish) got a 2212A. They are not allowed to leave the area, they are not detailed out to the east end like 2211 or 2211A. That beat was also given the incident car to sit out there all night to try and watch for burglars. While we over here are left unprotected.

Also to the parents of this neighborhood, I don't appreciate your urchins (that wouldn't do anything because they are little angels) walking in packs at 930/10pm on a friday or saturday night screaming yelling and being general pains in the asses. Get your daughters home at a respectable hour (and have them at least dress decently) and teach your sons some manners and have them home at a reasonable hour as well. Last time I checked parents still rule the roost, at least I do with my kids. I don't give a flying fork what time little jimmy and janey get to stay out till. 830 is a good enough time to be home.

Off of that topic, seeing we have to sign in for some dumb reason at least take the word verification off.

The text of the speech was released earlier today (Monday), in case anybody is interested in reading it.

FYI, didn't vote for Obama, but his speech to school children was inspiring! It's what I've been trying to get across to my own kid for years. It was nothing to be afraid of people. I think it should be reiterated to your children if they didn't watch/hear it in school.

"President Reagan did it, President H.W. Bush did it," Gingrich said on NBC's "Today" show. "If he could give a speech tomorrow night in the tone of his speech today to the students, this country would be much better off ... It's a good speech, I recommend it to everybody if you have any doubts."

FYI the 'CK' beat is 2221 and yes they did get an extra car when home invasions and burglaries were occurring at an alarming rate. It was the direct result of concerned citizens who circulated petitions, organized a neighborhood watch, held community meetings and more meetings. The beat car 2221a was added when the powers that be realized (after 20 years) that natural barriers and man-made barriers may delay response time and compromise safety.

FYI 2212 also got a 2212a car for the same reason.

To The Ass, Mrs Shrek, Southside, Jim Mcmahon, and everyone else-

I was holding off on comments until after the speech. I know how media outlets almost always have some agenda. I watched it a little while ago on CNN.com. I wasn't worried about it beforehand, because St. Catherines was not airing it. But I would like to say that it was an inspiring speech that seemed to lack any liberal,or anti-american propaganda.

On that note I would like to add, it was an inspiring speech, THAT HAD NO BUSINESS BEING SHOWN TO ANY CHILD.

Everyone on this post seemed to miss the point that I felt was the most important. (Except for Jim, who I am not sure about, but have too much respect for him, to speak on his behalf). President Obama is not my daughters parent, and he is not your childs' parent.

It is our job as parents to inspire our children, not his. President Obama is an elected official who gave a speech to kids (that are not even allowed to vote) to stay in school. Am I seriously the only one that sees anything wrong with that?

Jim- In the last paragragh of your last comment you said, " Your absolutely entitled to raise your children anyway you choose" However, I feel that if you are in favor of this speech, then you prefer to have someone else raise your child. For some reason, I think you feel the way I do.

Mrs. Shrek & Southside- I guess the above paragraphs can be a response to your posts. With no disrepect intended.

Finally- to "THE ASS"-
Your first sentence was "I see NOTHING wrong with the President giving an encouraging speech to my kids while they are in school." If this is true, then I see nothing wrong with saying that "You may be a bad parent". Of course, I do not believe this, but I am just trying to make a point.

It is up to us, AND ONLY US, to inspire our children. That is the most important part of being a parent. Maybe the next time President Obama wants to replace me as my daughter's father, he could also make my child support payments. $900 a month is rough when you're unemployed. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

P.S.-- It does not take a village, Hillary Rodham. Just some love, and resposibility.

J.O.B., I certainly would be happy if my child was inspired by someone other than me. That would mean that I did my job as a parent raising a fine person who can think for themselves beyond the home they live in.

How proud I would be if my child was inspired by....

Police or Firemen to become a selfless defender and protector of the public.

A Teacher that encouraged them to become one themselves to teach others to learn.

A Priest or Pastor that brought out their religious thinking so they can go preach good to others.

A Scientist that maybe someday my child could come up a cure for some dreaded disease.

How dare you examine my parenting skills just because I would want my child to be inspired by others.
