Applesauce For a Good Cause

Please read below.

This is a request asking you to run a link on your web site for a real quality product being sold by a real quality guy, Jim Mullen. He is a disabled Chicago Police Officer that was shot and left paralyzed in October of 1996 while answering a citizen's call for help. I've met Jim and he has one of the best outlooks on life of anyone I've ever met and could serve as a true inspiration to anyone.

Jim remains paralyzed from the neck down and needs the assistance of a ventilator to breathe. In spite of his physical limitations, it has been one of Jim's life long dreams to share some of his favorite family recipes.

I recently bought some of his Applesauce online and wouldn't consider any other brand at any price. I received my order in just a few days and it's fantastic. The label accurately describes it as being "Like 'Apple Pie' without the crust."

...Please patronize this fine mans business, you'll be glad you did.

Jim McMahon

The link to Mullen Foods is located to the left under the Misc Links heading. As you will see, a portion of the proceeds is given to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

Jim Mullen was dealt a bad hand and he is certainly a hero, but I must support him another way, and I will, even though I absolutely love applesauce.

I cannot donate a penny of my money to the Police Memorial Fund (PMF) until the crook Phil Cline is no longer affiliated with the organization.

Hopefully, Cline's wrongdoing at the PMF will someday come to light. He publishes no accounting of funds received, plus he pays himself quite handsomely from a job he created while still at the CPD and strong arming CPD members to donate to the fund. Yes, PMF t-shirts were sold, quite forcibly I might add, but there was also heavy pressure to participate in a payroll deduction for the fund. It was common knowledge that Cline would not consider you for a discretionary transfer or promotion if you did not participate in payroll deduction for the PMF.

Cline makes his ill gotten, bloated salary off the stories of deceased police officers that are publicized so as to bring in donations from current police officers and the public at large. Check the PMF website. There is no list of a Board of Directors, no list of the employees, and no published balance sheet.

I would rather shovel snow for Jim Mullen at his house, or cut his grass, or donate to another cause of Jim Mullen's choosing rather than give a dime to Phil Cline.

Have you done those things for him? Or do you just anonymously post things to discourage people from buying his applesauce because he generously donates a portion of proceeds to a foundation dedicated to fallen officers?

Re: Phil Cline & Applesauce?

I’m sure your intention was to make the public aware of some unscrupulous activity you believe is going on at the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, and not an attack on Jim Mullen’s character or credibility, but it could easily be misconstrued as such. I know nothing about Phil Cline or his affiliation with the CPMF and the fact that Jim Mullen contributes money to that organization, or any other ones for that matter, is totally irrelevant to me. In my opinion, there’s no connection between Politics and Applesauce, and I’m sure Jim’s choice to contribute to the CPMF comes from having a big heart, and in his eyes, is an honorable decision. You’re definitely entitled to your opinion but if you think about it, we’re all forced by the Federal Government to pay for programs that we don’t believe in every day, and we’ve all sat still and allowed them to stick it to us time and time again.

This is obviously Jim’s way of supporting his brethren Police Officers in the best way he knows how to, and should not be a deciding factor for patronizing a great guy who is doing his best to survive in a world that has walls and obstacles built up all around him. 95% of the people that end up in Jims situation roll up in a ball and cry themselves to sleep every night, he doesn’t. He has the courage to take on life, on life’s terms, and refuses to be beaten by anyone or anything, no matter what challenges he’s forced to deal with. This is his choice, and THAT’S what makes Jim Mullen a hero, getting shot didn’t.

I think it’s important that it be made very clear that the fact that he donates money to any organization, should not reflect negatively on Jim Mullen in any way, shape or form, and I do know that Jim is doing nothing illicit or immoral. My only interest here is to patronize a fantastic guy who has the intestinal fortitude to provide a living for himself and his family under some of the toughest conditions imaginable.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don't doubt for one second that some sleazy political hacks aren’t skimming money from the CPMF because our world is full of these derelicts, and it never ceases to amaze me just how low some people can stoop. There are precious few “charitable organizations” that I know of that don’t take the “Lions Share” of the funds contributed for over inflated “Administration Fees,” and that in itself is a shame. i.e., “Jerry’s Kids,” the “United Way,” the “Salvation Army,” the “Red Cross,” the countless billions that were donated for the relief of the Hurricane Katrina victims, etc., etc. Very little money actually gets to the people that we’re led to believe with be getting it. I can only hope there’s a special place in Hell that’s “good & hot” waiting for the likes of the vermin that prey on the kindness of others to line their own pockets under the guise of charity.

I’m sure there are legitimate charities out there, but the only respectable ones that I know of, or will even consider donating to anymore, are the Shriners Hospitals or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. (Not sure of the exact admin. costs, but those two are under 10%, compared to some others as high as 97%) I’d bet is very possible that Jim has little or no knowledge of the allegations about Phil Clines wrongdoings at the CPMF, and you might want to consider giving him a call or e-mailing him to apprise him of what you know to be fact. He’s a pretty easy guy to get in touch with and you’d enjoy talking with him.

No offense, but I do not know how anyone that can read could, or would, misconstrue my words. I was clearly supportive of Jim Mullen and not supportive of Phil Cline. Simple and to the point. Anyone unable to see the aforementioned is either stupid, or blinded by emotion.

And your statement of, "In my opinion, there’s no connection between Politics and Applesauce", is unfortunate. The connection is very clear.

How about if I were a reknowned and socially beloved philanthropist, and I ask you to buy my spaghetti sauce and I will donate a portion of the proceeds to say, I'll make one up, the United Fund for Underprivileged Chicago Neighborhoods, because they do so much good, but you were aware that the donated money was not spent in a correct manner that abides by your personal code of ethics. What do you do? Buy my product because I have a good reputation even though you are aware the donated money will not be spent in a correct manner? I think not.

No offense to Jim Mullen, I would love to buy his applesauce, but not when a portion of my money is going to the CPMF. I will not allow it until Phil Cline is gone. Cline is a philandering crook.
