February 6th is National Go Red for Women Day. The goal of this is to make woman aware of heart disease. Ladies they have trained us well to check the boobies, not so much on the heart. We are underdiagnosed, undertreated, and paying a severe price. If it doesn't kill us, it leaves a devastating mark on us (strokes, TIA, brain damage, paralysis, etc.) LADIES ANY PAIN, PRESSURE, DISCOMFORT FROM THE CHIN TO THE NAVEL NEEDS TO BE RULED OUT AS CARDIAC. DO NOT LET YOUR MD TELL YOU IT IS "EMOTIONAL, OR NOTHING". INCREASED FATIGUE AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH WITH ACTIVITY ALSO NEEDS TO BE RULED OUT. Check out this website http://www.goredforwomen.org/

And remember on February 6th wear your red, that goes for you guys too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read a comment in the Best Kept Secrets in 60655 about public schools not getting any support from the politicians. BULLSHIT. What more do they want at the public schools, we feed them breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner or a snack. I know not all people are catholic in Mt. Greenwood but don't say the public schools get more. How come it costs taxpayers much more to send a kid to a public school then I pay to send 3 of mine to a catholic school. That is because there is hugh waste at the public schools. They have tons of stuff that is not even opened because they have to use their budget or they lose it. I can't afford the catholic schools either but I send mine there, but in sound mind I could not send mine to a Chicago Public School. Why do 1/2 the Chicago Public School teachers I know send their own children to a catholic school? WHY DON'T YOU ASK ONE OF THEM.

We sent 2 of our children to MOPO Jr. High. Money wasnt the reason. Quality of instruction was. Dont write it off just because its public.

What/where is MOPO jr. High?

Lived here all my life and never heard of it.

Morgan Park High School actually has a small 7th and 8th grade class (same as Whitney Young). Correct me if I am wrong, but junior high at Morgan Park are actually honor classes correct - in the IB program? I knew a few kids from the neighborhood (yes, 60655) who tested in and went there for junior high and went on to Whitney Young for high school.

The public schools in 60655 are actually very good. Very few kids getting brekfast, lunch as there is very little busing and is almost all area kids now. No one gets dinner dont be so ignorant. Take a look at the test scores at christina and deciede if you get your moneys worth. Take a look at the types of degrees the teachers have at the catholic schools not very impressive (for the most part). The quality of instruction isn't what it used to be. I went to Christina but my kids will not. This isnt the 70's or even the 90's. The CPS schools are good and the catholice schools suffered huge enrollment drops in the past few years because of the declining quality and the growing cost. When was the last time you even saw a nun at one of the schools. The administrators at Mt. Greenwood and Clissold are doing great jobs and the test scores are great. The high schools are a differnt story the Ag school might be ok but getting in is a joke and morgan park HS isnt very safe from the crime stats.

I don't think education is the only reason I chose to pay for my children's education. I pay for the environment. I have been in Mt. Greenwood school for a screening. I was not impressed with anyone. The case worker was terrible. I sat there during the start of the school and could not believe the number of kids coming in late. My children learn from me. They have great attendance and are never late. My children attend St. Christina and scored very well on their terra nova test. I believe a child can learn anywhere, they get what they put into it. I just prefer the atmosphere and environment at a Catholic school. My opinion.

The public v. Catholic debate is as old as the Hatfield and McCoys fued. I have been personally on both sides of the fence and have fought this battle more than once myself. I went to public school, my husband to Catholic. When it came time to put my kids in school, I won and we went public (Clissold). Which was helpful as both my kids were diagnosed early with processing disorders and we all know the public schools have better resources for that kind of thing (at least back then). We then moved to Mt. Greenwood when my oldest was starting 6th grade. Mt. Greenwood was not getting a good rap and we enrolled the kids in Catholic. I loved Clissold and I love the Catholic grammar school she is in now, she no longer needs the resources, but they were available to her. I have had more than mean comment made to me about public schools when mine were enrolled and my hackles went up...I completely understand. But like each child is an individual, so are the schools, some are good, some are bad, it's all about what you do with what you are given. If your kids have always gone to public, you don't understand the Catholic schools and if your kids have always gone public, you won't understand the public...hmmm, reminds me of the whole Mt. Greenwood/Beverly rivalry...or the Bridgeport/Canaryville rivalry... Whatever side your playing on, is the one you will ALWAYS cheer for.

Public vs. Catholic times are a changing. Remember when everyone thought the public kids jumped those parents coming home from a QOM party, and then were shocked they were catholics. SCS and Terra Nova score, not so good, and Math YIKES. I am about to go public, I'm sure my kids will score well on the ISATS.

My kids go to QM - which I love.
I have thought about Mt. Greenwood - seriously. Part of it is I don't want to rip my kids from their friends, & part of it is Catholic guilt.
While I have heard great things about MG, I also personally know kids that were promoted just to get them out.

I also agree that you get out what you put in. I expect my kids to do well in school!

**No shock that they were Catholic - this is Mt. Greenwood. FYI - while they did go to Catholic high school - only 1 of the charged went to Catholic grammar school, another was tossed from QM, and the last 2 went to public.

Dear Anonymous (Jan 22 - 9:50 a.m)

I think you should run for Mr. Duncan's job. You seem to know
it all!

I think you should bend over...
grab your ears really, really
tight...

and pull your head right out
of your ***!

I went to Catholic Schools my
whole entire life! Just because
I did .... or my kids do or don't ...does not give me or anyone else the right to judge those that send their kids to CPS. Going to a catholic school
does NOT make you better than
anyone else!

Get real!

that whole Q of M party thing... i heard from a chicago police officer that the sh!!faced parents were the ones that started that fiasco! and they (the adults, if you want to call them that)lied about the whole entire thing. that is exactly why the story was dropped and you did not hear anything more about it! they deserved to get their butts kicked!

I hate to rain on everyone's Catholic/Public debate, but the school your kids are attending don't mean jack if YOU don't work with them at home. YOU instill the desire to learn. ALL schools teach, is YOUR kid ready to learn?

Kids to to Mt. G, very happy with the school/staff etc...had the whole catholic guilt thing. but the wife and I decided to try it and we are thrilled....Truth be told public schools get bad rap, maybe for good reason, but 1st thing that pops into peoples head when you say "they go to Mt. G" is BLACK kids, that's why we're all afraid...BE HONEST...THERE MAYBE OTHER REASONS, BUT THIS IS #1....Mt. G has very few if that's what your hung up on..otherwise its a good school, as are most Cath. schools in 60655....NOT TRYING TO BE RACIST, JUST TRUTHFUL...I MEANS MOST WOULD PROBABLY SEND KIDS TO AGG. SCHOOL IF IT WE NOT SO "DARK", ISN'T THAT WHY EVERYONE RUSHED UP TO VOTE ON THE LAST BOARD ELECTIONS THERE.....TO GET MORE "FRIENDLY" BOARD MEMBERS...i CALL IT AS I SEE IT...THESE ARE THE TIMES WE LIVE IN..

Please don't speak of what you do not know... They punks were charged and took pleas.

They story was not dropped.

Would you allow YOUR kid to take a plea if they had done nothing wrong?

Under what circumstance is it OK for a 17 yo male to strike a 40 yo women FIRST? The "kids" the street - not the adults.

DROP IT

I commend "In and around" and Mt greenwood people! I salute your easy and free ways, telling it like it is. I live in Beverly and I guess life repeats itself in art or blogging. The PC bullshit that most Beverly east and beverly north people live by is portraying itself on the beverly blog. Tip, if you ignore the topics because they may offend you are whats wrong with this society. That blog is really useless chatter about shopping. Just like in life trying to be so "open" to the ways of life they close their eyes and pretend all is well and kind. GRow up. White guilt is over with. Let facts about crime help you adhere and adapt, keep you on your toes. Ignoring them wont help and makes you ignorant to whats happening in yor snow globe world.
had to vent , sorry

I agree that one needs to look at the scores of St. Christina's Stae Report Card. Does the adminstration/staff not relaize that there needs to be a huge improvement in their math curriculum. Both of my children attend St. Christina......they recieve all A's except for Math.....I work with them at home, send them to enrichment in order to have them "catch up"....they barely get a B in Math.....One more intersting thing....when they ask the teacher to re-explain something, the response is often, "no, I already explained to the class." Isn't it their job to assist students when they ask for claarification on a topic. We have discussed sending them to Cassel next year....however I would hate from them to lose the religion aspect of the curriculum.

Blogger 9:27 A.M. C.C.D. is on Sunday mornings at 8:15 to 9:45. They get out in time for 10:00 mass. Don't worry about the religious part of their education. The parents that lend their time at St. Christina on Sunday mornings do a great job. Send the kids to public school k thru 8, and save your money for private high school. Good luck.

To the POs that read: please leave the CPD gossip and slams and name calling to the other blog. Not at all appropriate here. I enjoy the childish banter just as much as the next guy, but I know where to go get it. Not here. Please.
Also to the POs: I've had several conversations with some of the officers that work our beat here. THEY ARE DISCOURAGED. They try to do the right thing, they try to keep the peace here and to keep the garbage from invading. They are shut down. By who? you ask...
the police parents. I'm shocked at how many have the 'not my kid' attitude. Furthermore, they actually accuse the officers of not having the guts (other words used) to work where real bad guys are. I'm disgusted by this. I appreciate 2211 trying to keep the neighborhood kids from getting out of hand and for being aware of who's who in the area. For appreciating our 'quality of life' concerns. To the parents: come on, kids are kids we know that. but if your kid pushes a little too far, it must be addressed. If he is doing something that is disrupting life for any other person in this neighborhood, YOU need to handle it. Teach them a bit more respect and where to draw the line. If you can't or choose to not, don't dare give the coppers a hard time if they are called to do it for you. I am the police and I have kids and I was a jackass teenager myself with CPD dad. I was raised to show respect for all ADULTS, not just police. Didn't dare try to push that envelope. I feel the same way today, and am trying to teach my kids that. BY EXAMPLE. I think that the on-duty police need to make the decisions and the off-duty police need to respect it. I'm all for giving our brothers a chance or a play, but how 'bout this- ONCE! Beyond that, too bad!

Why was it OK for all the area private schools to hold a carnival to raise money for the school but when a public school asked to do the same....they were turned down by the 19th ward. Why can a private H.S. receive $50K for a football field yet when a public school asks for help, they get none. I have one son in 7th grade at a public school that is now crowded. VERY good education but the classroom sizes are increasing as they take in more and more students from private schools. The school needs to expand. There are very few students not from our area bussed in, the rest are our own neighborhood kids. The concern has fallen on deaf ears by our public officials.

When we get our vouchers (for not using your schools)for paying for your jot lunches and bus rides and schools ,then you can have carnivals. Deal?

Hey idiot, I am a MTG resident whose kid does not receive free food from CPS. Most of our students do not. There are less than 20 kids out of 760 students bussed in and they (the 20+-) are mostly special needs. It is a neighborhood school. You get a tax credit from the state for your choice of paying private school tuition.

I thinks it's about time that we as a community have taken over Mt. Greenwood School...we already pay for it, and God knows I need to save $$ for a Catholic H.S., I am happy with the school and the progress, I see more and more cops, fireman & others each day at drop off, and I love it...if i thought for a minute they were getting a subpar education, I'd move them, but we're doing great......principal, takes no shit, they wear uniforms, and if they need extra help in whatvever, the programs are there....thanks to all for taking it back...

That CPD officer was probably the father of one of the little angels that committed the crime. Dont believe everything you hear. Those adults did not start anything, the drunk little angels of the neighborhood did. The father was at the police area putting on a show how his little darling was incapable of doing such a thing.

i do know one of the parents involved and can't see him starting anything. but what i do know is when i was a teenager and any parent said something or approached us we would walk away. in other words the lack of respect in some of these teenagers is terrible.

The lack of respect that kids show these days is fueled by the crap they are exposed to on t.v. and the internet. Turn on MTV 1 or 2, or VH1 at any time of the day. That's all you will see all day long, one show after the other of people disrespecting everyone and everything. These are those "reality" type shows. Everybody's trying to get laid, getting drunk, getting high, cursing at one another. They target teens with this garbage as if these activities are normal and acceptable behaviors for young people. Kids can sit in their bedrooms and dial up all the sex and violence they can handle at any given time. That's frightening! I'm not saying that you wouldn't see A-holes from time to time before the internet and cable were around. Just look at how many more kids have attitudes as compared to 25 or 30 years ago. It's up to the parents to get a handle on this. You have to be on top of what these kids are doing constantly. I love it when I have to listen to a bunch of kids cursing and screaming in front of my house for 3 hours. Then when you've had enough I tell them to beat it, they move as slowly as possible calling me a pu@#y all the way down the block. I've also have had the father of one of these cute little kids confront me for having the nerve to tell his little darling what a J%#-off he was. As if this jerk didn't already know this. Like I have nothing better to do than harass kids as they walk past my house doing absolutely nothing. Go grow a pair bonehead, and discipline your brat while your at it.
Damn, that felt good to get that of my chest.
