Twas the Night before Spring Training
by Lucas Brown ©

Twas the night before Spring Training, when all through the clubhouse
Not a creature was stirring, except the managers.
The uniforms were hung in the lockers with care,
In hopes that the season soon would be there.

The rookies were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of the Big League danced in their heads.
And Nuke in his garter, and Crash in his cap,
Had just been rewound before the players' nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
Cy Young was the pitcher, and Babe Ruth was the batter.
Away to the window the players all flew,
To see the ghosts on the evening dew.

Shoeless Joe was in left on that moonlit night,
Who was on second, oh wait, that's not right.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Mighty Casey with a bat drawing near.

"Now Mickey! now, Willie! Now, Hammerin' Hank!
On, Harmon! On, Reggie! on, Maris and Frank!
To the top of the leader boards! to the top of the Hall!
Show the young rookies how to play ball!"

They all admire the slugger named Roy
As he steps to the plate with his bat, Wonderboy.
They'll pass him on the street, a tip of the hat they will give,
'There goes the greatest player that ever lived."

The rookies' eyes will twinkle in their first at-bat.
The veterans will calm them and give them a pat.
For it is only spring training with so much to do,
Preparation for a season, a career to pursue.

The young ones will play their best through the spring,
With hopes of making the 40-man team.
They'll play their careers 'til they finally say,
"Tell them I'm through for love of the game."

Abraham Lincoln turns 200 on Thursday. And Obama just cannot help himself. He has just got to get himself involved in the festivities. I would assume so he can remind the American people of just how lucky we are that we have such a visionary leading our great nation. I'm sure the President will try to compare himself to one of the greatest Presidents we've ever had. (There's so many similarities). And with all the great things Mr.Obama has accomplished throughout his remarkable career, how could argue. I"ll bet Obama will even get his face on the 3 dollar bill someday.

"The Day Shay Got To Play" by EJ Nolan

Chush is a school in Brooklyn, New York that caters to learning disabled children. Some children remain in Chush for their entire school career.

At a Chush fund-raising dinner, the father of one student delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he cried out, "Where is the perfection in my son, Shay? Everything God does is done with perfection, but my child cannot understand things as other children do. My child cannot remember facts and figures as other children do. Where is God's perfection?"

The audience was shocked by the question, pained by the father's anguish and stilled by the piercing query. "I believe," the father answered, "that when God brings a child like this into the world, the perfection that he seeks is in the way people react to this child."

He then told the following story about his son Shay: One afternoon, Shay and his father walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they will let me play?"

Shay's father knew that his son was not at all athletic and that most boys would not want him on their team. But Shay's father understood that if his son was chosen to play it would give him a comfortable sense of belonging. Shay's father approached one of the boys in the field and asked if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance from his teammates. Getting none, he took matters into his own hands and said "We are losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him up to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay's father was ecstatic as Shay smiled broadly. Shay was told to put on a glove and go out to play short center field. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again and now with two outs and the bases loaded with the potential winning run on base. Shay was scheduled to be up. Would the team actually let Shay bat at this juncture and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that it was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, let alone hit with it. However as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher moved a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay should at least be able to make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. One of Shay's team-mates came up to Shay and together they held the bat and faced the pitcher waiting for the next pitch. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly toward Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay and his teammate swung at the ball and together they hit a slow ground ball to the pitcher.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could easily have thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have ended the game. Instead, the pitcher took the ball and threw it on a high arc to right field, far beyond reach of the first baseman.

Everyone started yelling, "Shay, run to first. Run to first." Never in his life had Shay run to first. He scampered down the baseline wide-eyed and startled. By the time he reached first base, the right fielder had the ball. He could have thrown the ball to the second baseman who would tag out Shay, who was still running. But the right fielder understood what the pitcher's intentions were, so he threw the ball high and far over the third baseman's head.

Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second." Shay ran towards second base as the runners ahead of him deliriously circled the bases towards home.

As Shay reached second base, the opposing shortstop ran to him, turned him in the direction of third base and shouted, "Run to third." As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams ran behind him screaming, "Shay run home."

Shay ran home, stepped on home plate and all 18 boys lifted him on their shoulders and made him the hero, as he had just hit a "grand slam" and won the game for his team.

"That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "those 18 boys reached their level of God's perfection."

Our bone head President has done it again. He's cutting the defense budget across the board with 2 theaters of war in progress. He's also saying "I will not weaponize space". Did you know that Iran launched a spy satellite into space last week? Is it a coincidence that they did this after George Bush had left office? No it's not. Bush had these jerks in the middle east shaking in their turbans. Iran is still working on their nuclear reactor. China and has nukes too, with a missile capable of delivering it to the west coast. All of these countries are building up their military so let's reduce the size of ours. DOOEY!!! This guy is unbelievable! So now not only will our kids and grand kids never have any financial security, the security of the nation is going to be destroyed too. This live for today attitude is going to ruin this country, at some point that debt is going to have to be paid, Obama is going to make sure it gets passed on to future generations, so his piece of crap voting base will keep voting for liberals. Did you also notice that a big chunk of this so called " stimulus bill" will not be distributed until 2011. Just in time for his re-election bid. Hey you 52% who voted for this guy, how it feel to get s#%t on ya! To bad this dummy's policies are going to affect all of us.

Nipsy gain you are right on! I root for this coutry and of course its leader and leadership. I did not vote for him though. I cant root with so many absolutley used up terrible ideas. I tried to count the "umms" in his answers to the questions by the media I got lost at about 340. His first answer was 10 mins long and was a speech not an answer. I hope he knows what he is doing or we are all doomed to poverty and a giant goverment. Russia and Iran will test him immediately, its already happening they are beoming aggressive. He talked about getting rid of nuclear war heads here, wow we need help. If quayle was dumb then Biden is a dumber.
anyone else notice the constant "fear mongering" about "if this spending package (payback money)_ doesnt pass we will be in a depression" ? I thought the Democrats always hammered Bush for fear mongering wars? This is the same thing. Thanks Kid

by J. Kyle (2001) ©

Thanks kid for being the reason,
I get to coach another season.
Who was more nervous that very first day?
You just learning, or me who must teach you to play.

Out on the diamond I feel like a kid again,
Yet after each practice and game my age settles back in.
My muscles would ache and bones feel sore,
A little ice and some ointment and I’m better than before.

A few moments each game I would steal far away,
Back to a time when I could still play.
The boyhood memories came rushing back in,
Just like a good slider complete with the spin.

That ol’ team was a rough and tumble bunch,
We would play all day and never eat lunch.
We would play anyone, anytime, anywhere,
But no other team could give us a scare.

That old sandlot is still there today,
Now sadly the boys no longer come to play.
The grass grows tall where home plate once stood,
A long forgotten landmark in the old neighborhood.

“Coach, hey Coach” I hear from a place far, far away,
“Are you going to pitch to me sometime today?”
Suddenly, I am standing back on the mound,
Surrounded by my players just milling around.

I am back to the game, with you at last,
My boyhood memories tucked back in the past.
“Hey Coach, everything alright” I am asked with a grin,
“Just perfect kid. Hey, thanks again

What is the point of coming to church if your children are not paying attention or getting any spirituality out of the mass?????
Maybe you should all inspect your kids before they leave the house to make sure they changed out of their pajama bottoms/sweat pants and comb their hair or pat them down for any electronic devises that are hidden in their pockets! Or better yet, Go To CHURCH AS A FAMILY!!!!

I still like President Bush and thank him for keeping our country safe especially after that terrible day on September 11th, 2001. We were all fearful that was just the begginning of attacks on America and many other countries have been hit but our Commander and Chief kept us safe! Also thank GWB for naming 2 conservative judges to the U.S. Supreme Court. I'm fearful that if Barack Huessien has an opportunity he may name judges that make Ruth Baader Ginsberg look moderate!

I wonder if the British Prime Minister in the 1930's Chamberlin had to do it all over again would have gotten rid of Hitler when he had the chance, yet he said he posed no threat. What a huge mistake. Do you think if the Brits took him out it would have been a waste of money? Saddam Hussein was Hitler reborn. Compare what the two of them did, almost identical. Weapons of mass destruction or not, Bush did the right thing. How many U.N resolutions did Saddam violate? He was given every chance in the world to come clean and did not. I guess you would have to live in Iraq to appreciate what we did, just ask a veteran who served there and saw it first hand and you may change your mind. Now, talk about a waste of money, how about paying for health care for illegal aliens. Tens of millions are here and we the taxpayers pay the freight..If you want to save billions, close the borders and send those who don't belong here back where they belong!!!!!!!Right on Nippsy...

Still no response from the Obama supporters. They must still be trying to find a single reason that they voted for him. I've got a list of things that Obama stands for that might help out.

killing unborn children.

Not giving a child that survives a botched abortion medical assistance so it dies.

Letting terrorists that are being detained use our legal system as if they are citizens on our country.

Closing Guantanimo bay. With no clear idea of what he will do with the detainee's.

Socializing Medical care for the whole country. This practice does not work in any country that has this. (The money that this would cost would double the current "stimulus" package.)

Reducing our military budget. (Everybody knows we don't need a strong military in today's cute and fuzzy world.)

Drilling for our own oil will not happen.(Hey we don't need to find our own oil, gas is at $1.99 a gallon right now. Besides, the people that we buy a lot of our oil from now are so nice.) We will be paying close to $5.00 a gallon by summer again.

He wants to sit down and talk with Iran & Hamas, These two ass-clowns are "sworn to make Israel "cease to exist," that means the people too, Sounds a little like someone from you history books don't it? And Obama thinks he can sit down and reason with these idiots!

These issues will get you guys started, let's hear your opinions on why these things are good for our country. Without the usual name calling, just your opinions.

Sent this to the alderman, lets see how she responds.

What is up with impark raising the parking fee to $1.50 and not posting it but ticketing people at 103rd street. They have multiple signs with 1.25 posted but as of today they have a single piece of paper on the side of the payment box enclosure stating the increase. I am fine with the increase but inconsistently posting the price of parking is bullshit.

When the parking lot was repaved, they also move the dam pay box to about 150 yards past the parking lot. While i now know where it is, i didn't in the past and was ticketed for it. This is very deceiving for people parking. It seems like they are doing everything possible to make it difficult to pay.

Impark has no problem ticketing people but rarely takes care of the parking lot. Their lots were ice skating rinks most of the winter.

Maybe this is a conspiracy to get more revenue through tickets or not. I don't care. Someone needs to put and end to it.

One last city problem. Put a visible cross walk and a sign on 103rd street. Many people need to cross the street and basically stop traffic to get across. During the morning and evening compute, traffic almost never stops long enough for people the cross the street. Drivers get very irritated that people are stopping traffic to get across.

If you go downtown often, you can use the $13.00 to plug the parking meters, they are going up $1.50 per hour so that will give you about a extra 8.5 hours of parking time. Thank you Mayor Daley, you privatized the meters now a private firm can charge us what they want to park on public land and the city will enforce it. When will this nonsense end. Just a comment:
Why when you don't agree with someone you have to call them "Jerks", "Idiots" "Fools" and such. Why can't you agree to disagree. Especially regarding religion and politics. The 2 most controversial subjects that there are.

How about telling us about orginizations that you belong to that might interest others into joining. How about volunteer groups looking for help. How about places that have interesting things to do. ex. The Ag school has a great water areobics class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6:00. You do have to register and it is only $20.00.
These are things that I think a lot of us are interested in instead of always bashing each other.

This is what happens when clout allows the winning bidder on a contract to cut corners and use substandard materials for a project. Dont worry the city will pay (your tax dollars) to have it fixed most likely by the same clout bidder.

How about the pot holes on 109th and Homan. That is a very busy street with Mt. Greenwood and St. Christina being on each corner. That block is terrible and the holes should be fixed.

Maybe Rugai can take a look at them. Don't we pay enough taxes. Or do we have to fundraise to get that done.

Regarding Chicago Park District charging fees for classes. If you go on the CPD Web site you will see that all parks that offer water aerobics charge the same fee. Open swim is free but not classes. We don't get the free stuff anymore. But then you have to pay $120.00 for the same class in the far south burbs. So maybe we don't have it so bad.

Why Is Baseball So Much Better Than Football?

Before a baseball game, there are two hours of batting practice. Before a football game, there's a two-hour traffic jam.

Eighty degrees, a cold beer and a short-sleeve shirt is better than 30 degrees, a hip flask and six layers of clothes under a lap blanket. Take your pick: suntan or frostbite.

If you miss your favorite NFL team's game, you have to wait a week. In baseball, you wait a day.

Baseball has a drug problem comparable to society's. Pro football has a range of substance-abuse problems comparable only to itself. And, perhaps, The Hells Angels'.

In baseball, fans catch foul balls. In football, they raise a net so you can't even catch an extra point.

And the guys who did the home invasion a couple of months ago I think met the getaway car there and were caught ... they need to overhall the place top to bottom

David Francis Dravecky (born February 14, 1956 in Youngstown, Ohio, United States) is a Christian motivational speaker, author, and former Major League Baseball player for the San Diego Padres (1982-87) and San Francisco Giants (1987-89).

Not a White Sox player ... but a great inspiration to all ...

A left-handed pitcher, Dravecky represented the Padres at the All-Star game in 1983, his second season, in which he won 14 games. Equally proficient as a starter or coming out of the bullpen, Dravecky helped the Padres to their first pennant the following year.

In 1987, the Giants acquired Dravecky for their pennant drive. He went 7-5 during the stretch, and in the playoffs pitched a shutout in Game 2 against the St. Louis Cardinals and lost Game 6 by a score of 1-0. The Cards won in seven games.

The following season, a cancerous desmoid tumor was found in Dravecky's pitching arm. He underwent surgery on October 7, 1988, removing half of the deltoid muscle in his pitching arm and freezing the humerus bone in an effort to eliminate all of the cancerous cells. By July 1989, he was pitching in the minors, and on August 10, he made a highly publicized return to the major leagues, pitching 8 innings and defeating Cincinnati 4-3. In his following start five days later against the Expos, Dravecky pitched three no-hit innings, but in the fifth inning, he felt a tingling sensation in his arm. In the sixth inning he started off shaky, allowing a home run to the lead off batter and then hitting the second batter, Andres Galarraga. Then, on his first pitch to Tim Raines, his humerus bone snapped, ending his career.
To see a pitcher break his arm with a loud cracking sound while doing something as ordinary as throwing a pitch, then fall to the ground rolling in agonizing pain, was shocking, unusual, and upsetting, especially for those who had followed his touching story. The pitch was replayed on television repeatedly over the following days.

The Giants won the National League pennant in 1989 (defeating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS in five games), and in the post-game celebration, Dravecky's arm was broken a second time by Kevin Mitchell and Kelly Downs. A doctor examining Dravecky's x-rays noticed a mass in his arm. Cancer had returned. Eighteen days later, Dravecky retired from baseball, leaving a 64-57 record with 558 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA in 1,062.2 innings. He won the 1989 Willie Mac Award honoring his spirit and leadership.

After two more surgeries, his left arm continued to deteriorate, and on July 18, 1991, less than two years after his comeback with the Giants, Dravecky's left arm and shoulder were amputated. Then he went on as a motivational speaker.

I like our local Burger King. Never had a problem and always great service. Maybe if our local teenagers hung out there it would make the others move on. Start writing down times they show up and we all will go up there and take up the space. In my parents neighborhood, some of the residents started taking pictures with their cell phones. Made them nervous and they have not been back since.
