Walgreen's Revisted - Again

12 years later. Still nothing.
Committees formed. Still nothing.

From MGLRC - Breaking News

City Council Adopts Ordinance
‘Coming Soon’ just got sooner. An Ordinance authorizing the redevelopment agreement between developers of the Walgreens Signature Corner project and the City of Chicago was approved October 8, 2008. This is a huge step in moving closer to an actual groundbreaking.

Then going back a year or so, found this on the web (from the Southwestobserver) - Emphasis added to highlight complete and utter POOP!

Spring 2008.

It was an answer that more than 60 Mount Greenwood residents were looking for Monday night when they packed the Chicago Public Library's Mount Greenwood Branch to air their questions and concerns with the developer of the northwest corner of 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue.......

But the question on everyone's mind was: When will construction begin? It likely will be as early as spring 2008 but no later than summer of that year.

Ald. Ginger Rugai stepped in halfway through the hour-long meeting to calm what was fast becoming a fiesty crowd. (hmmm, wonder why everyone was mad, after 11 years in the making)

She explained to those in attendance that the process to create a signature corner, which began four years ago (try many more than that since the plan was initially approved in 1997) with Terraco's initial purchases, has progressively (too funny, we ALL know the City does nothing quick, at least without secret pocket $$$) made its way through the city's planning and zoning departments.

Nonetheless the process - however slow - is moving ahead, added Rugai, who underscored the need for such a development. "There was no sense of Mount Greenwood pride," she said. "This creates a signature corner at 111th and Kedzie."....

"Our home values are skyrocketing (not anymore)," argued resident Maureen Chausse. "But 111th Street, which is our signature, looks like the ghetto. (with our 1960's Walgreens, Currency Exchange, Dollar Store and Nail Place, this is something to be proud of, Mt. Greenwood's signature corner!)"

Anyway, I called the alderman's office this morning, after getting the "I'm not sure what is going on" I was told to call the Mt. Greenwood ward office, of course, being city run, nobody answered. But I was told by the Beverly ward office that the

"WALGREENS' PROJECT IS NOT DEAD, BUT HAS SLOWED DUE TO LACK OF MONEY"......what?????????????

So I guess we need to raise money for the Signature Corner now too....just like the park project that took years to get done???

I don't get it, please someone explain, how did all the stores at 95th and Western get put up within weeks, but the Walgreen's project has been 12 years in the making.

This would be because 111th & Kedzie is located in 60655 - not 60643.

I live in 60643. I get no extra attention or police service or new curbs, hell I dont have school I can use in sight! Those stores on 95th and Western are mostly failed or failing already, no parking and lack of extra loot have left them without $ making ability. I dont live in North Beverly so I cant comment on that I call north beverly ":cul da sac land" that Rugai ahas ruined that whole area of Western with those stupid things. She is useless in many ways. The top thing I despise about her is that she has a ward full of police and firemen and yet she never speaks on their behalf at city hall or meetings, she sits on her hands . Never damands quit contracts or more hiring to protect our ward . She is a clout hand puppet! Who needs another god damn Walgreens anyway there are one on every corner in this dump city.

To me it is not so much the Walgreens as it the nastiness of that corner and the empty, broken and pitiful promises. Just call it dead after 12 years and stop treating us like mindless idiots. We get it, if we are not democrats from North Beverly then we are screwed. When is the election? Is anyone ready to run against her?

She will not be run against. She will stay the 2 years and give the reins to Matt o'shea, so that he dpesnt have to run for the spot , at first. I have no opinion of him either way, but the whole process is backroom politics as usual. If he is so great then let him run against anyone.

Let's hold a protest on 111th Street from the empty lot by Fat Tommy's ( old one ) to the corner of 111th and Kedzie. Where is the MGLRC? Oh yeah, it is Monopoly time! No one will run against her without her blessing. What if no one voted for her at all? Boycott the alderman vote! Would it make a difference or would she get in anyway?

Okay, they screwed us. Let's find a respectable candidate, and organize

How about those park ladies? They seem to be able to get things done. Any one of them will do.

Can we post pictures of our "signature corner" as it stands today?

send me pictures or I can try to take some. If you have pictures, send them to inandaround60655@yahoo.com and I will get them posted... Maybe throw in a couple of potholes too?

Can Rugai just hand over the reins. I thought we lived in a democracy. I thought we are always supposed to vote for our "leaders." Oops, I forgot this is Illinois and politicans from Chicago, Cook County and the State of Illinois are exempt from following the rules.

I just hope that one day the corner of 111th and kedzie is as nice as the corner of 111th and pulaski. Dare i dream the impossible dream.

Ginger is as useless as tits on a bull!

Anonymous said...

It is because our residents are White and not of non taxpaying descent.

Are you all talking about Alder-blimp Ginger " Slow as a Snail in Molasses" Rugai ? Don't worry, if shes's in charge of the development, you'll be dead from old age by time it gets done. Just like the new Streetlamps on 111 St. They got em in the Ghetto, but in Mt. Greenwood? Fogedd-a-boud-it.

We should organize a rally at 111th & Kedzie instead of sitting behind our computer screens. Lets get the press involved. We would need get everyone from our blocks so we could have a HUGE CROWD to get people talking any maybe get something done. Who's in??

When the whole Walgreens project started several years ago, We were told it would take 12 to 15 years to complete because land had to be bought and zoning other things had to be taken care of. I know MGRC took longer than they wanted to purchase some land because owners got greedy. So it seems to me that the project is still on the original time line. Who ever said Rugai doesn't speek on behalf of police and fireman is wrong. I've heard her talk and praise them many times. I've been down there for award ceremonies and she seems to be the only alderman who talks to any fireman or police after they receive their awards.

Rugai is co chair of the police fire committee why do the police and fireman have to wait two years for a contract. The electricans, carpenters laborers teachers cta teamsters all got new contracts as soon as the old one expired with good raises. Ginger had no problem voting herself a 6% raise and her staff a 5% raise. Ginger doesnt give a damn about anyone but ginger.

i said this before. rugai isn't a terrible alderman but lets face it. she has little influence when it comes to city politics. how long did it take daley to shut down miegs field? did he need any special zoning permits to build his wife's pet project? does it make any sense that it takes over 10 years to rebuild one corner? lets face it mt.greenwood has been and will always be on the backburner unless we find someone who isnt afraid to speak up
