Breaking News? What's going on?

Helicopters are flying around, what's going on? Heard that shots were fired at 111th/110th and Lawndale. Anyone have the scoop.

No shots fired! Lets not get everyone worked up. We were up there and two off duty cops said they did not no what was going on or why the bird was out but there was no 'shots fired' response to the park by CPD.

Anonymous said...

Group of kids fighting then ran helicopters happened to be flying by & assisted.

Anonymous said...

Helicopter noticed kids fighting in park and called in the fight. Noticed on here few days ago that kids are ultimate fighting in park.

HEY PARENTS: where are your kids? What are they doing? Can you help them differentiate between what they see on t.v., and what is acceptable, civil behavior? If your child thinks it's okay to imitate what you allow them to view on t.v. then perhaps they are not mature enough to watch that type of programming. If this is what is going on, then the kids that are getting beat up, should have to answer to someone.....Please step up and be an involved parent, before this situation gets out of hand and someone gets seriously injured!

this is what I got from a police source, don't know how true. Someone was breaking into garage, off duty cop confronted person, person shot at cop, cop shot back. Person is on the loose. Like I said, this is heresay and has nothing to do with the kids in the park. I think the kids were on the move because parents were calling them home or at least away from the park. Anyone know FOR SURE??? I can't find anything on the scanner or news.

Nothing. Just the usual mob of kids at 111th & Lawndale. There was a report of a battery in progress, kids running down alleys and shots fired but a it was unfounded. Police chopper #2 was up there. I haven't used my scanner in a long time it comes in handy on occasion. Here everyone, enjoy the show. 22nd & 5th district scanner code is 460.025. I know it sucks waiting for a response from the Police in this district, but listen in on a Friday or Saturday and hear what's going on just three miles east of you. Nice.

You can also tune to 153.77000 on your scanner for CFD

Why is the helicopter still flying? Its over 111th and kedzie now.

Anonymous said...

There were shots fired earlier- that much has been confirmed. Don't know if it was an off duty PO or break in or what.

Anonymous said...

my mother called 911 and was told they were there due to fights in the park...why then did i just see them going to get a frozen pizza from my garage hovering due east over kedzie it appears.

Anonymous said...

There was alot of action in the 5th
police district tonight which is just east of the 22nd district and shares the same dispatch. The helicopter was hovering around a person shot in the area of 111th Indiana (which sorry to say is not unusal for that area) when a 'Battery in progress' call came out @ Mt. Greenwood Park followed by ahots fired @ the park - this prompted the helicopter to then head west at which time the copter reported hundreds of kids running in all directions. This made many think that maybe there were shots fired however responding officers investigated and reported it as a not-bonified incident and coded the job out which is done in lieu of a bonified incident in which a report would have been generated. Sleep tight 60655ers and enjoy the park this weekend!

Anonymous said...

I know people at the 911 center and apparently the cops thought they heard shots fired, but nothing confirmed. Chased a group of kids to 109th and Lawndale, but nothing found...just questioned. Yes...the kids are and were UFC fighting.

Let's talk about aldermanic politics in the 19th ward.

So much more can be done but isn't being done for fear of offending da Mayor. I think we need to get someone in there who isn't afraid to do what it takes to enhance our neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

I think Brian Callaghan would be a great alderman. Smart, sincere and willing to fight for whats best for the neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

I also heard the noise that sure sounded like gun shots?????? Then almost at the same time I heard the helicopter????? Can nyone find out for sure what happened?????

Anonymous said...

why are there so many different scenario's??? was a shot fired or not???

Anyone that takes on the current 19th ward power better not have any skeletons in the closet. These people don't play and will dig back into your childhood.

Does anyone the REAL story about last night, shots fired and helicopters flying around MTG park???

Pappy said...

Off the subject of shots fired I just want to say to the girl (probably about 16) driving the Jeep Cherokee yesterday around 3PM who almost ran over my daughter and I crossing 115th on Central Park, with the green light, and then had the audacity to roll down your window and yell at me that "Its my right of way" and "you're supposed to stop", I think you need to go back to drivers ed! First of all, smart ass, pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way! A car, making a left through the crosswalk while we have the green light NEVER HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY! You need to wait for us to cross! No wonder there is such a large nationwide push to raise the minimum age for licenses! Next time I hope you hit me and that your mommy and daddy either have a real nice house or real good auto insurance! I am not above making your family homeless and bankrupt! Ass! And the same goes for the idiot senior citizen that honked at me and my son while we were crossing St. Louis riding our bikes east on 115th! Seriously?? Again, another fool, this one making a left onto North St. Louis from 115th honking at me and my 5 yr old son to hurry up through the crosswalk! I guess she thought she had the ROW too! You, old lady, in the black Ford Taurus. I'll take a page out of the book of our canadien friends to the east and sue the shit outta ya! Please, next time, just run me over! I want to retire and move out of this cesspool of a city! This town needs an enema! John Pape for alderman!

Anonymous said...

Start taking down license plate numbers and putting them on here maybe then these parents will really know how their little darlings are driving.

Anonymous said...

does anyone have a similar problem with their neighbors? Dogs CONSTANTLY barking, don't pick up after their dogs so I can smell "poop" while sitting in my yard and music "blaring" day and evening. Senior citizens called cops, they came because of loud music but never got out of the squad, just yelled to them in the driveway told them to turn the music down. CPD at their finest!! 5 minutes after pulling away the music was on loud till 2:00 am. Of course these are "renters" and one of the renters dad is a cop. Any suggestions? I just want one quite evening this summer.

Regarding new school for Mt. Greenwod: Mt. Greenwood had 5 public grammer schools. Four K-6 and one K-8. The residents in the area preferred to send their children to private schools, so CPS sold Duffy to St. Xavier, Wiggin became Keller Gifted school, Keller became the AG school and Cassell became a K-8. If people had utalized these schools they would still be around today.

Pappy seems to have serious issues...

July 19, 2009 1:22 AM

The problem is that nobody takes issues like this seriously enough.

Stand on central park ave next to the east end of the park and watch drivers flying north and south all day long. When both sides of the street are filled with cars and little kids are trying to get across the street, people seem to speed even faster. It's only a matter of time until a little kid gets killed.

I watch the kids trying to cross central park at the stop sign at the southeast corner of the park. Drivers never come to a complete stop and many blow right through even if someone is trying to cross in the crosswalk.

As we all know, many of these drivers are cops, firefighters, other city workers and/or their family members. So who's going to give them a ticket? They know it and that's why they drive like maniacs.

Very few drivers today exhibit any courtesy to anyone else. Most have no concept that speeding down side streets won't save you more than a few seconds of travel time at the most.

I agree - Kevin for Alderman!!! He's a great cop/protector/leader for Mt. Greenwood

Anonymous said...

Pappy I was surprised to see your post. My wife and I witnessed the whole thing. It was actually around 8pm not 3pm and we were just returning from a walk in the park with our daughter. The women in the suv was probably in her mid twenties not 16 from what we could see. We just crossed 115th on Central Park when this happened (the other side not your side). And yes, you had the right of way. I don't remember hearing her say that she had the right of way but maybe I just couldn't hear that part. I do remember her saying you're suppossed to stop. That's when you went off. Although I agree with you and she was in the wrong your language was a bit harsh. There was also a women and another child right behind you.

Anonymous said...

Pappy- I agree with you about the irrespnsible and disrespectful driving in the neighborhood. One suggestion though- careful about mentioning the need for an enema at the end of your rants. You know what some smart alleck may suggest...

Anonymous said...

I 2nd that! Kevin Howard would be a perfect candidate!

Anonymous said...

Who is Kevin Howard? and what qualifications does he have for Alderman> Just curious...

Anonymous said...

I don't know, I think Pappy and Nippsy make pretty good sense on their posts. They are just pointing out arrogant and self centered people are these days. I think there are more people that think like them on this blog than not.

Anonymous said...

Is it Kevin Howard, the cop? Only one I know.

Anonymous said...

What qualifications do you need for Alderman? None! A great start would be anti Daley, anti Machine. Everything would fall into place after that. Kevin Howard for Alderman!

Pappy said...

I admit, I did use some harsh language which was wrong on my part. Just FYI though, the woman and second child on the corner behind us were my wife and son on 115th and CP also trying to cross, not that that excuses my language. I will be more aware of it. I was very angry! I almost got splattered along with my 7 yr old daughter! To all the other posters, how come so few of you use your names or screen names? Are some of you afraid to stand by what you say? Stand up for what you believe. Thats the only way to instigate change! I know, its easy to hide behind a keyboard and say whatever you want 'anonymously'. But, thats probably why our CAPS meetings only have about the same 4 senior citizens every month and I stopped wasting my time going, not to mention Fran talks out of both sides of her mouth. By the way, someone had asked on an earlier post, they are the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6PM (as of a year ago). And, in response to the poster that says Nippsy and I should move in together and moan about the old times-first of all, I am only 32 and have only lived in Mt. Greenwood for 6 yrs, so I am not old. Second of all, you are right, although I am new to this blog, I dig what Nippsy says and do agree with her a lot. Some of us cops, firemen, and city workers actually care about a quality of life and we need to stand up to those (and their offspring) that don't! Nobody here is above the law (even though it seems that way sometimes). Considering most of us are colleagues in some way, shape, or form you'd think we could all get along a little bit better. By the way, I am John Pape and I stand behind what I say. Pape for alderman!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Kevin Howard is a cop and a great, honest guy.

Pappy, you don't have to apologize for using harsh language....I would too if I were in the same situation. I'm sure your kids will forgive the language realizing you were defending them from getting hurt. As far as the anonymous thing goes....we don't have to stand behind a name to comment on what we believe in. It's just a blog, not a job application.

Pappy said...

Yes, that is true. Remaining anonymous is OK for it being just a blog and a personal choice. The bigger question is how to unite the like thinkers to rally around a viable candidate for alderman and bring about the changes most of would like to see? Mt. Greenwood had been neglected for too long. It seems as if most of us on here are anti-machine, anti-Hizzoner, and anti-Rugai.

Anonymous said...

I will agree with the fact that Mt. greenwood has been neglected...I have been doing some research on the different "organizations" that are available in this neighborhood. If you look at the Beverly websites, they are updated and full of activities for families and kids. Looking at the Mt. Greenwood sites you see old information, no new events except for the Sox game sponsored by the Chamber. Trying to become a member of the Civic association or the Residents assocation is almost impossible because no one answers their emails or phone calls. I would be more than happy to volunteer my time to help make this neighborhood a more inviting place to live. We really need to spruce up the place...its becoming run down.....

Anonymous said...

I really enjoy getting the Beverly Area Planning Association's (BAPA) weekly blast email. They tend to have 15-20 items in it from all over the ward. I signed up for it on their website www.bapa.org.

Speaking of BAPA, did you hear Mt. Greenwood's "Sweet Escapes" has been invited to be one of the featured food vendors for BAPA's Music Under the Stars event. That is so neat!

Yeah for Sweet Escapes!! We have a great menu lined up!! There will be something for everyone!! Cupcakes for two, cherry cheesecakes, Strawberries with cream cheese and chocolate, Kiddie chow, caramel apple bowls!! Stop by and see us! We will also be selling tshirts..

Well I guess I will get a lot of hate comments for this but here goes............
MAYBE the kids wouldn't be fighting at Mt. Greenwood Park if the parents didn't let them stay out every night until midnight --- or whenever in some cases. Don't you think that it is time that we got off our butts and took our rights as parents BACK! Or do some parents not want those rights? is it just easier to just let them do whatever they please? Yep! I think so. My 17 yr old daughter moans and complains because she has to be in the house by 10:30 on weeknights and 11:30 on weekends. Oh well - sorry for your luck princess! "My friends don't have a curfew!" I have heard that so many times I just want to scream!

***********************************Only one comment. What kind of parent are you? You are allowing her to break curfew moron! The curfew hours changed back in March. For minors it's 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. And you're trying to give advice about parenting? No Thank You!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with both parent's about curfew. It's amazing how many kids don't even go home and have dinner, they are always out "roaming" or standing on the street corners. I've told my kds, no more!!! Find something to do, play f-ball, b-ball something other than sitting on a corner. Neighbors are sick and tired of the same group of boys hanging on the corners, recently a stink bomb was put in the mailbox, these kids are bored. Parent's do you know what your kids are doing when they are out till 10:00pm??? CPD needs to keep on these kids to keep them from getting in trouble. They should be able to go to MTG park but the fighting which is "fun" according to them needs to stop, that's where parent's come in.

Anonymous said...

In reply to the comment made about the person getting the curfew hours wrong...nobody is perfect! At least she has rules for her child to abide by and has an interest in what her child is doing. There are several parent's who have NO idea what is going on with their kids or what they are doing till 10:00 pm. You can tell, drive around the neighborhood, see the groups of kids just hanging on 105th street St. Louis and Lawndale...up to NO GOOD. Neighbors are tired of this group, they are nothing but trouble and the parent's think they do no wrong. Summer is almost over so school will start soon and hopefully parent's will keep their kids in on week nights.

***********************************I never said I was perfect, but for somebody to jump on and start bashing people about parenting that don't even know or follow the curfew law is just plain crazy! What kind of parent are they? There are rules and structure in my home and my kids follow it. I happen to agree about the inappropriate behavior with kids these days. Every parent needs to get on their kids. It's called "tough love" people.....they might not like it now, but they'll appreciate it and understand it when they're a little older.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, glad to here you have rules and structure in your home, wish more parent's would do the same. Yes, nobody is perfect and if you don't have older kids maybe this parent didn't know the curfew rules changed, I sure didn't until my neighbor with older kids informed me. You are so right about "tough love" more parent's need to start following that train of thought and maybe these kids around here would be more respectful.

Anonymous said...

I think her original post said her daughter was 17, but that's neither here nor there. Just struck me as funny she would criticize and not know the curfew, that's all. I guess I was just sticking up for those of us that do have rules and structure. Seriously though, I grew up learning all about "tough love" and apply it now with my kids. I trust them and love them with all my heart, but we do these things to keep them safe. They hate us for it now, but will love us for it later!

Tim said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but curfew only applies to children 16 and UNDER. Curfew does not apply to 17 year olds. I believe someone owes someone an appology. Let's see if you're adult enough to get on here and do it now. You sure did a lot of smack talking about how that parent didn't know the law. Do you care to blast yourself in the same fashion?

Anonymous said...

Actually, I got the curfew hours from another parent. But I will inform her that she was wrong AND adjust my daughters hours. BUT - to the parent that so rudely jumped me in a fit of anger - hmmmmm "me thinks thy doth protest too much" Such anger leads me to believe that you are one of the worthless parents with the worthless kids hanging out on streetcorners! LOL -- I think I just heard a laugh and it should have been the last one!

***********************************Wait.....you started the post and rudely jumped on judging other people and kids that you don't know. I'm big enough to apologize, but I also don't bash other people or their kids. I put all my energy into my own family. I don't need to defend the type of kid my son is....the only thing that matters is that I know he is.
