So our tax dollars we pay for police services will be going to others who pay little to no taxes and we get the university police. No offense to SXU officers but what kind of training do they have vs CPD. Would you allow SXU to start a fire department and feel comfortable about that being your fire protection? It is a nice idea and does increase a law enforcement presence in Mt Greenwood......but shouldn't we get a tax break for not receiving services from the city? So SXU police are you trained to handle armed robberies etc, no sarcasism intended, we just want to know what we have here. No snow removal, no police, no new schools, no economic developement, why do we have alderman again? As to Beverly vs Mt Greenwood.....we need the leadership for organizations such as BAPA to come from within. We have to do this. The current org's are a bit lagging in leadership and we may need some fresh blood in there. Also, community support is not always there. Alot of people complain but stop at that. It is follow through that is needed. I remember being at a meeting for the new playground and people were mumbling "why do I have to do this hard work or contribute when others get this done for free and no work?" It is that attitude that defeats us. These gals worked their buts off for 3+ years to get the playground we deserve. Anyone else want to jump in and get things done. How about running for alderman? It has to come from within.

In regards to the S.X.U Police patrols. I don't think the idea is for Saint Xavier Police to be added as extra police for Mt. Greenwood. It is to add security to their own properties. In the event that S.X.U Police have to make an arrest, they can take them to the 22nd district for processing without tying up a 22nd district car. That's a good thing. We still need our beat cars to stay on 2211 as much as possible.

A majority of schools in urban settings with police/saftey departments are able to patrol areas that fall within in the campus area. Most schools are not confined within boundries that the school itself completely owns. They therefor have officers when moving from property to property under university control passing through areas that are not owned by the university.

I do not think SXU is looking to patrol the streets of mt greenwood. I believe the are looking for the ability to take action if they see something say at 10700 and central park when they are driving down the street to check on their building at 111th and drake.

I do not know the full police powers that their saftey department currently holds but fot them to have arrest powers they need to be certified by the State of IL. If they are just certified as security guards like somone at a bank of say a movie theatre, then they have no arrest powers and can not do anything. If they did something off the property of SXU theu would not be covered by insurance etc.

I beleive Loyola on the northside went through some process a year or so ago to give their officers this power around the campus.

Whether they have this ability or not it should have no bearing on how much police protection we recieve from the CITY itself. That is what we pay taxes for

I'm putting this post here but it applies to comments made in the other open post section. That's old now so I figured no one would get to it. It is ib regard to someone blasting a parent for allowing their 17 year old to be out until 10:30pm.......
Correct me if I'm wrong, but curfew only applies to children 16 and UNDER. Curfew does not apply to 17 year olds. I believe someone owes someone an appology. Let's see if you're adult enough to get on here and do it now. You sure did a lot of smack talking about how that parent didn't know the law. Do you care to blast yourself in the same fashion?

***********************************My kid is 16 and he's the ONLY one I care about in regards to who the law applies to. I'm not at all too big headed to apologize. This person did a lot of smack talking about kids and parents in the neighborhood. They don't know these kids or their parents. If you read further, I also stated in a later post that it's neither here nor there what she does....just to stop judging others!

To the original poster....I apologize as the curfew law does not apply to your daughter. I was simply making a statement that you shouldn't point fingers at others. Everyone needs to stop worrying about everyone elses kids and do what they have to for their own. Are there parents out there that don't worry enough...hell yeah, but don't post it like it's everyone and let them deal with their own problems!

One of my pet peeves is when people pass on the right. There was already one person who was kit on kedzie and his dog killed earlier this year because of somebody passing on the right.

I was wondering what others do and what can be done to prevent this. I have to wait to get through the light, as you should too.

Very doubtful. It's likely that courts would rule that the polling place is the proper avenue for redress.

As for equal protection, there's a presumption that the city has a rational basis for allocating resources the way they do. The burden of proof would be on us to prove that there is no rational basis for the city's actions. Very hard to do considering that folks are getting killed over there and not over here.

Pappy said...

Well Mike, what I do is drive right down the middle and do not leave enough room for them to pass on the right. It is definitely a jag off maneuver, but you are right (no pun intended!), there is only one lane on these streets (111th, 115th, kedzie). It is just a really BIG lane. The 'right lane' was intended for a parking lane but was never officially designated as so by the city or county. But, beware. If you do get in a crash or anything the insurance companies and police will try to assign a 50/50 fault due to no official lane designations (Yes, I speak from experience-it happened to a good friend of mine who lives on 115th pulling in to his driveway someone tried to pass on right and t-boned him-all the above info came right from the coppers and he had to fight in court to get his car fixed). He won because there is no dotted white line separating lanes. I agree with you and it is a huge pet peeve of mine too!

Also a pet peeve for me. I hug the curb as much as possible when I see a car flying up from behind me when I'm in the right hand lane. I don't care if they want to pass, just do it in the other lane!!

There will be no Walgreens. Come on, if they were planning on doing the signature corner, why would they paint the side of Walgreens to freshen it up? Isn't the lot between Walgreens and the old Fat Tommy's for sale? I thought I saw a sign there. The deal is dead and no amount of hot air is going to recessitate it.

We also lost another business to the suburbs. The dog bakery moved to Alsip (somewhere between 115th and 119th and Pulaski).

I followed them with 911 on the phone the entire time giving our location as I was driving and they caught up to us. My son gets honked at and cut off on a regular basis because he is doing the speed limit. People please have patience with these kids. It only gets them anxious and nervous and can cause an accident.

To Nippsy. On last weeks thread you mentioned it was Bill Clinton who passed NAFTA with a Democratic Congress and blamed him and Democrats for the loss of jobs. Free Trade negotiations started in 1988 with Canada. George H Bush ceremoniously signed NAFTA in Dec 1991. Clinton then tried to sign it officially but didn't have the votes in Congress which he would need. Eventually NAFTA passed with 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats.

Further more GW Bush's tax cut was opposed by Republican Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neal who said it would contribute to budget deficits and undermine social security, Bush ignored him. During Bush's 2 terms as President the national debt increased 70% to 8.98 trillion. Later Dick Cheney admitted they were trying to hold off the recession to blame it squarely on Obama.

How about this, just as insurance companies have long based their rates on your zip code, can our taxes be based on the same using the the number of crimes and/or 911calls etc? You call the police because pookie won't get out of bed and go to school, you get surcharged. If it is a bonified call, no charge.

About Cheney wasn't he the head of Halliburton and they received the contract to provide everything under the sun to Iraq $73 million dollars worth after the war started? Just another example of politicians lining their own pockets.

SouthSide said...

Nippsy, not sure if we would be better off voting for Perot because he did seem a little wacky, but that crazy little man was right about the economy. He was dead-on with the crisis we would face by loosing manufacturing jobs. 40,000 manufacturing facilities have closed since 1999 in this country.

I didn't actually quote Cheney but I'll retract the word "admitted". He was trying to pass the blame but it was obvious. As early as 2006 the administration was already foreseeing signs that the housing bubble was about to burst (because of the deregulation of banks and sub-prime loans). Bush called it a "rough patch". In 2007 Cheney was interviewed about the prediction he made of a sinking economy (that he admitted to, making that prediction). Then in January of this year before Obama takes office on Face the Nation he attempts to make it seem that the financial crisis is a "new set of problems" that "have developed...over the last six months"

Obama is done already? Well, we are all entitled to our opinions. Health Care reform is dead in the water thank God? Why are you thanking God? Did you know that 15% of our GDP goes to healthcare? Did you know that the next highest country only spends 10% of GDP but covers everyone? Did you know the U.S. was ranked 38th overall globally by the World Health Organization? If your rational for being against reform is that you don't want others to have access I suppose you will have to answer to your conscience on that one. But from a financial standpoint it behooves us as a nation to reform a system in which United Health clocked 154.9% profit over the last 12 months, that’s 859 million net profit, (in a recession mind-you) while 62% of those that file list medical bills as their primary reason for bankruptcy. You don’t have to agree with a Democratic sponsored plan but you should at least agree that Medical for-profit companies are robbing this nation blind and our system of delivering health care is broken.

I'm all for it! I've been to the 911 center and have heard the ridiculous calls that come in. Maybe if they started charging per call like 411 these idiots would stop calling and make the poor call takers/dispatchers jobs a lot easier and there wouldn't be so many false alarms. The only bad thing would be for the good samaritan calling in a fire or witnessing an accident, etc....they would be hesitant to call anymore.

I for one am going to give the new administration in Washington time to work out our problems. The man has only been in office 6 months as of this past Monday. How does anyone expect him to turn around the economy, job loss, housing troubles in that short of time. Go Obama!! Push your agenda, if it doesn't work so be it, a lesson will be learned, and YOU will admit to your mistake. If it does, all the power to the people for electing him. But give the man a chance.

SouthSide said...

I understand your concern with government July 24th 2:49pm. So if this is the case then there shouldn't be a problem right? I mean, if there is public option run by the government and they always screw things up then it'll fail. People will stay with their private plans because regardless of cost people will prefer the current structure. Obama and whoever supported it will be done.

However, we know Medicare works, nothing is perfect but it works. Try and get someone on Medicare to give it up for a private plan. The health insurance industry is pumping millions into the campaign coffers of congress because they are protecting their cash cow (btw that's our pockets). Republicans and Democrats are taking money, why do you think this is so difficult? Are you saying we are so inept as a people that every western industrialized country in the world can figure this out except us?

This all comes down to money. Those taking money from the industry are likely to support its interest which is opposite of ours. Profit vs. Health

"As early as 2006 the administration was already foreseeing signs that the housing bubble was about to burst (because of the deregulation of banks and sub-prime loans)..."

In 2003 Bush tried to reform Fannie and Freddie because he forsaw a problem with giving loans to people who couldn't afford them, and in 2005 Mc Cain tried again. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and their merry band of prancing thieves accused them of making it up and calling it a scare tactic.

Jimmy Carter started the problem with the Community Reinvestment Act and Bill Clinton put the problem on steroids when they decided that it is an American right to own a home. This caused the housing bubble burst that is a major factor in this economic recession going on right now. Had the Democrats listened instead of following their liberal agendas, this could have been avoided.

It's good to hear there are many people that share the same frustration with me, in regards to cars passing on the right.

Overall, be it in 60655 or elsewhere, it seems like driving, traffic, and road rage is becoming more of an issue. I find that if I don't go at least 10 over, people are staring and tailgating me. If I don't turn right on red, I get a horn. If I'm in the right lane going straight and the person behind is turning right and can't get past me, I get the horn. I'd love to know where and what the cops are doing because they sure aren't watching traffic.

It's glad to see that others have the same issues, and it sounds like it doesn't matter if you're 16 or 30. It's a shame that we have to live in a world like this.

So, who wants to go in with me and buy a million acres of land and start a real community again? :) One where you can trust everybody in your neighborhood and not worry about other people coming in and trashing the whole thing.

Its even worse when they come to stop signs. 104th and Maplewood is unbelievable when it comes to people stopping. Why can't we have a patrol car just sit and watch. Hell I'll videotape it for the city. Come on alderman get with the community cause this is probably your last act. Someone from your office must read this blog. Who runs the cities dept of trees/forestry? they have a great job, they dont do shit. I see we are not the only ones asking for tree trimming on the public way with no response in over two years. The tree by our house, for one blocks the stop sign, and two obstructs the view to the street, but I guess safety doesn't mean shit.
to the people complaining about the crazy drivers, feel free to write down their license plates, a description of the driver and head to the Daley center and swear out a traffic warrant. Not sure of the exact procedures but it has been done, and would only take a phone call to find out the right procedure. I know it is the police departments job, but remember your mayor came up with the community policing program and he wants you the community to be involved, so all his police can protect his reverends and their contributions..

Drive by the AG School anyday. This is how the kids from "The Eastside" cross the street there too. You should hear the names the drivers are called if they blow their horns. I've even witnessed the kids hitting the hoods on the cars that don't stop for them. The kids are jaywalking and of course you NEVER see the beat cop or any other cop ANYWHERE near the school when the kids are dismissed.

FYI - to those of you that block the PUBLIC sidewalk, please notice I will no longer try to avoid touching your precious car as I try to get around. I am sick and tired of these idiots when I try to take my kids on walk or bike ride. My 5 year old fell off his bike trying to avoid one of these dumbass cars.

Kodos (spelling ?) to anonymous who wrote about the people who block sidewalks, I'm sick of that too!! Why the hell can't people park on the street? Are they that lazy that they can't walk a few feet more? Come on!! To those of you who BEEP your horn when picking someone up, ONCE is enough, if they don't come out get your lazy ass out of the car and ring the door bell OR call them on your cell and tell them you are waiting. I'm tired of hearing horns beeping early in the morning before 7:00 am and late in the evening, have some consideration and class, ring the doorbell and stop beeping the horn continuously!

Just left 7-11 on 103rd & Sawyer... 3 YOUNG girls, maybe 14-15, and 1 boy. 1 of the girls was on a boys dirt bike. Another girl asked a car full on boys (16-18 I would guess) for a ride home. These boys had sense enough to yell at the girls for even asking.

I just overheard 3 girls talking while at CVS checking out tonight (July 27th) is "Fight Night" at Monrue Park. I couldn't believe my ears. I guess girls are into this "fighting" as well. I can assure you my daughter and son will be busy tonight. I don't know what has gotten into kids, they actually think this is a "sport"...how sad! Just an FYI for all you parent's with teenagers. Hopefully CPD will disburse the kids at the park tonight.

I also heard some West Bev and Mt Greenwood kids talking about getting dropped off in Oak Lawn for fights. The parents are dropping off and picking up!

Hey "Ass". Why didn't Bill Clinton have Bin Laden killed when the C.I.A. had him in the cross hairs? Don't blame 911 on Bush. If Clinton was doing his job instead of getting favors under his desk and putting cigars in strange places, the U.S.S. Cole bombing and 911 would never have happened.

Anyone have more details about the Gas leak and evacuation at Spaulding & 111th?

Or about the break-in at Brady's Pharmacy?

Homeowners - is is really necessary to water the sidewalk? While I realize some sprinklers go "over" the sidewalk - which allow passersby to get by without getting drenched - there are others that are going the entire time!

Drilling being done and they struck a gas line. CFD called for plan 2 because it's residential....lots of equipment response. Everything under control.

They fight at Lawn Manor (107th/Kilpatrick) every freaking night. Check it out for yourself if you're really curious or bored. Anytime between 9-11pm. Mostly Mt. Greenwood kids with CPD/CFD parents. Sad.

How do you know it's MTG kids? And that their parents are CPD/CFD?

Sorry, I meant 107th/Kostner. How do I know they are MTG kids? I asked an Oak Lawn officer the other day after a kid was knocked unconscious over there. I asked him if they were neighborhood kids. He simply said most of them were from MTG. One of the kids told him they get shagged from Mt. Greenwood park, Kennedy, etc. by CPD, so they come over to Oak Lawn instead. Not all of their parents are CPD/CFD, being sarcastic. Wouldn't you agree though that at least a 1/3 of these kids have mom or dad working for CPD? I'm simply making a point that I think many kids feel invinsible, especially when they're from MTG. No, Oak Lawn kids aren't angels either.

I would certainly agree that it's possible, but I couldn't prove that so I wouldn't post it.

Great to see all the streets getting fixed on Pulaski and on 103rd Street. Thank Goodness we live in the best Ward in the City!

If I'm not mistaken, these streets are maintained by the state and not the wonderful city of Chicago

Some of the above comments talk about sprinkling the sidewalk and blocking the sidewalk. I unfortunately have both problems. My neighbor feels the need to pull his van out on his driveway blocking the sidewalk while my kids are riding their bikes. Then he waters not only his grass but the whole sidewalk. Yes I have talked to him about it but he doesn't care. I have called it in before but, and I am not blaming the Police at all, they take a long time to show up. They are usually stuck out east protecting the non-taxpayer. So what do I do? I will not sink to his level and do the same to him or his kids. Its not his kids fault their dad is a Jag.

Hello,

I needed my gross carpets cleaned really bad. I noticed the red minivan that is parked on 111th street that advertises for expert carpet cleaning and called them. They came out the next day and my 8 year old carpets look brand new! The owner came himself to clean them and he could not have been any nicer! He has been a Mt. Greenwood resident for over 20 years. If you are looking for a good carpet cleaner...give this guy a call! He was great!

Sincerely,

Mimi Barry

Who cares if the kids in the neighborhood want to knock the crap out of each other. Let them. Then when little Mikey and Timmy have to go to the hospital for their own stupidity they will have no one to blame but themselves. They should know right from wrong by now and they should have to live with the choises that they make. Every kid needs to get his/her bell rung every once and a while. Hopefully it will knock them back down to reality.

Ladies and Gentlemen......

Parent of the Year. This is the type of parenting that is going on and is also the reason kids think this is OK to behave in this manner. I think the cops should get involved with this much like an incident that happened a few months ago with girls fighting on the playground.

As a police officer, the worst grief I ever got from a parent was a CPD parent in denial. I laughed all the way home because I knew they would be the ones stuck with those rotten bastards into infinity. Boy, was I right.
