Say What!!! Are you kidding me!

I found this interesting and also a little ridiculous in some circumstances. I understand controlling your kids, but I cannot and will not have my teenager leashed to me. I cannot follow them and all I can do is hope that I instilled morals in them...but the day I have to pay for their stupidity, they are dead meat!

READ ON... This is an Illinois law.

Parental Liability for Minors

In general, minors are liable for their misdeeds. However, when a minor acts intentionally or negligently in a manner that causes harm to another, it is difficult to collect damages from the minor. In such a situation, the minor's parents may also be held liable for their child's acts and/or ordered to pay for them. A "parent" can be anyone exercising parental authority over the child, but typically refers to the "custodial" parent. Although they vary widely by state, most parental liability laws target intentional, malicious or reckless behavior and exclude pure accidents. Parental liability stems from the custodial parents' obligation to supervise and educate their children.

Types of Acts by Minors for Which Parents May be Liable

Many states have enacted laws which hold custodial parents responsible for delinquent acts of their minor children including:

Vandalism

Theft and shoplifting

Automobile accidents (especially if junior throws a party and someone left drunk, gets hurt, kiss your house goodbye)

Fights and assaults

File sharing (e.g., music industry copyright cases)

In general, individuals who are injured or harmed by a minor may be able to file suit against both the minor and the minor's parents.

A co-worker's daughter was caught shoplifting (14 years old) and was arrested and sentenced to community service. Okay fine, good, she learned a lesson (hopefully). Well then mom gets a letter from the store stating that the mom has to pay $130 in restitution. WHAT??? There were no damages, the merchandise never even got of the store. What are you paying for. Maybe I am wrong, but when I drop off my kid at the mall and they do something SO STUPID, why do I have to pay?

So with the fighting at Mt. Greenwood, parents be forewarned, if someone gets hurt, YOU can be liable for DAMAGES.

Thanks so much for all the info. on Illinois Law. I did know about "if a minor has a party with alcohol" and the consequences but was not aware of all the rest, it's good to know especially when you don't have teenager, I'll be prepared in a few years. I just hope parent's realize what their sons/daughters are doing and I think what happened or didn't at MTG park made some parent's wake up. I do think sometimes people judge and are a little to harsh with other's who may not know all these laws for minors especially if you're not a cop or married to a cop or you don't have teenagers that's still no excuse but yes, it's your responsibility as a parent to find out all you can so thank you!! I also refuse to keep my children on lease now as pre-teens or when they are teens but I will make sure they are very selective with who they hang out with. Thanks again!

DEAR PARENTS, I live by Mt. Greenwood Park and can look out my window and see what is going on in the park daily. If you could see what happens here nightly your hair would stand on end. I have gone out on occasion to try and stop some of the problems I see and have been told to get back in the house or get hurt. From now on I don't care what they do. I am not going to jeopardize my home or health for a bunch of kids who have no respect for their elders or themselves. I pray the day never comes when one of these kids gets seriously injured. Before that happens, take a ride or walk at night to the park and witness for yourself what is going on, you won't believe it....

***********************************My son doesn't hardly go there and if he does it's typically not at night. However, he is 16 and I'm sure I'd know at least half the kids there. Although they are not my kids, I have no problem taking a stroll through there and without embarrassing my son by my actions I have no problem intimidating them so that they think twice about what their doing. Maybe more parents should do the same. Just show your face and get them thinking about what they do because some parent might pop up at any time.

Re the Mt. Greenwood Park issues, I live further east, closer to Munroe Park. Can you elaborate on what's taking place in your park?

Underage drinking and smoking for sure. They have also been UFC fighting there lately, but I think since the helicopter incident they've stopped. People start rumors about kids having sex out in public there.....that's being extreme. More like making out and rolling around on the ground clothed. Definitely some inappropriate behavior and parents allowing their kids to hang out there should be aware of it. It's not all the kids, but a good portion of them.

I do not live near a park but how about videotaping what is going on there and put it on "YOU TUBE". Then let's see how the parents react when they see their "Angels" doing what they say they aren't doing.

You don't have to videotape it. I know for a fact the kids do themselves and put it on Youtube for anyone to see! All the parents have to do is get a clue and check it out for themselves.

Tried finding it on youtube, no luck. What is it listed under? Anyone know?

Clearly Mt Greenwood has abandoned any child over the age of 10. There are no activites for teens, tweens or preteens. These fights show that kids need something to do. Even the kids involved in sports are out here doing the same fighting. A movie theater or something is needed here. Beverly Art Center is too far for most and the costs, schedules and programs are not geared to this neglected population.

I say let um' beat the snot out of each other. After a couple of good poundings, it will stop. Their just doing what they are allowed to view on T.V. There's a new business across from the "new" Walgreens store on 111th & Kedzie called "Knock out" They teach Ultimate fighting in there. I guess that's the type of nice business that the Mount Greenwood development ass are trying to lure to the neighborhood. I kind of like the ghetto look east of Christiana. This shit is unbelievable.

Here's a nice youtube example. If you know the kid who produced it, try to save him. He seems to have a little talent.

I agree!! too bad the area churches don't take turns opening up the gyms for a small entrance fee for BB, board games, or even movies. Sell food/drinks and have parishioners or off duty police chaperon for a small salary

I am more than a "bit" troubled by the posting on YouTube by:
CHIxUSMC2594xMTG

You should watch some of his camera work of the fights and read his profile on youtube..

If this is considered accepted behavior in Mount Greenwood I'm moving.

It's been years but after living very close to the park here are a couple tactics I used. I always kept the job of putting my childrens clean clothes in their drawers. That way I wasn't "snooping" just doing my job. I had access to notes from school (very valuable), holes in clothing (pot), and the smell of any Godforsaken thing they were up to. Anytime they were going to a sleepover, I called the mother of said sleepover giver to thank her for having the event and ask if I could bring some soda or chips. Needless to say the first time I did this, The other mother had no idea what I was talking about. Those "bad kids" in the park that you speak of? Yea right. They are OUR little son of a bitches. Take a walk thru the park at night and give anyone in the neighborhood the right to yell and scream at your kid. My neighbor found my little darling at the park with a rope tied to a twelve pak which was dropped down the sewer. 1989. When they say I'm going "out", get a destination. Just some tips from a now grandmother. Thank god I was such a bad kid, my kids had a hard time getting over on me.

Apparently the kid or parents of the MtG. UFC group pulled down the postings on YouTube. All of the videos are gone...
