October 11th 11am to 6pm 103rd St. Oktoberfest. Food, Music, kids crafts, specials menu items, beer and wine at 103rd between Longwood and the tracks in the Beverly Bank parking lot. Should be lots of fun!

I am very sorry to say that World Music, the non-profit storefront venue, on 103rd St. just east of the Metra tracks, that had live music, children and adult music classes and performances is closing. Just another casualty of the economy. We have to support local business's and venues or they are going to close. This is devastating to the community when this happens. I suggest that everyone go out and see a performance, music event or movie at The Beverly Art Center as soon as possible. Let's not lose that too!

I would like to know if anyone has heard any information regarding a meeting that is supposed to take place regarding the Ag School and the possibility of it becoming a neighborhood school. It is apparent that very, very few children from Mt. Greenwood go there. I personally am disgusted that we do not have the option to send our kids to a public high school.

mtgreenwoodmom: Ag will probably never become a community school. That rumor/hope has been going around for 2 years and has been addressed already. The powers that be say that we here in the neighborhood will not fill the school, partly due to the stigma associated with CPS in general and most of you consider to send your kids to the catholic schools, which in my opinion, do not provide a superior education (I pulled my kids from Christina years ago and sent em to Cassell which is a phenomonal high performing little neighborhood magnet school). My teen does attend Ag and got in on his merits (you do need to meet certain test score criteria to apply) and was chosen via tne neighborhood lottery. You can go into 1 of 3 lotteries at Ag: sibling, neighboorhood, and general. The Ag attendance boundaries currently extend east to Stony Island, west to the city limit, south to the city limit, and north to 79th street. Maybe now that the Supreme Court has ruled that schools can no longer use race as a determining factor for admission it will become fairer. CPS was required to allow no more than 35% white into the selective enrollment and magnet schools until the other day. Remember the desegragation ruling 29 yrs ago? They have until next week to come up with new admissions criteria. However, everyone that applied to Ag this year from the neighborhood AND met the minimum standards was admitted. The other thing to keep in mind is that even though MTG is 98.6% white, the population of Chicago as a whole is only 35% white (or something close to that) and white children only make up 8% of the CPS! That is why we are having a difficult time making a convincing argument to make Ag a community HS. But, I will support and stand by anyone that wants to cross that bridge. The Ag is a fantastic school with a fantastic faculty from what I have seen thus far. It would be a welcomed option if everyone from here could send our kids there. You are right, there is no other viable option unless you want to spend 10K for parochial schools or risk death sending them to Morgan Park HS.

Its a travesty for another neighborhood business to close. Has anyone heard of the 3/50 project?

Pick 3 Independent businesses in your neighborhood.

Spend $50 there each month.

For every $100 spent, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll...etc.

Visit: the350project.net......take a look at the numbers.

Folks,

I recently had a terrible experience with CPS and the Ag school. I have a case and plan on suing them and making any kind of stand that I can for the rest of the people in the neighborhood so it doesn't happen to anyone else! Huberman is such a wimp that he won't even return my calls. Instead he has some attorney returning my calls like that's supposed to intimidate me???? He's afraid and he should be! Once I have things in order I will be sure to post the information on the site for any other angry parents to stand in my corner.

Blogmaster, I thought your blog did not permit anonymous comments. see above? Or do you make exceptions?

And Pappy. One correction. The boundaries that you posted are for LSC voting. Students from across the city may apply to the school

No, there are no exceptions. I don't care what name you use as long as you open an account, which anonymous did...You chose Jackie and they chose anonymous. You can tell who has an account because their name is blue and underlined.

Hope that answered your question.

Concerned thanks for the info. on the 3/50 project. I have forwarded it on to anyone I can. I think all small business's should check it out and utilize the free tools.Maybe we can get it going here in our neighborhood!

Pappy said...

Jackie, yes you are correct, thank you. I actually misspoke myself a bit on the way the lottery is done. It is sibling, neighborhood (those that live within a 2.5 mile radius of the school) and then citywide, in that order of preference (supposedly). But again, until the other day, magnet and selective enrollment schools were not allowed to exceed a 35% white student body. The supreme court has lifted that rule. It remains to be seen what CPS is going to do now. One idea that has been tossed around is using household income for admissions purposes. Like I stated, my kid did get in and he is very happy and doing quite well there. It should definitely be an option for anyone around here that wants to send their kids there. He had the option of Marist and Ag. He chose Ag.

Pappy said...

Anonymous: So what gives? Are you going to post info? I am curious as to what happened, not nosy, but I have a vested interest in the school because my child attends, along with many other kids from the neighborhood that were qualified and lucky enough to get in. And, I have had nothing but good experiences with the staff and leadership there thus far. Do any of your children attend the Ag? Is there something that the rest of us need to be concerned about?

perhaps at the upcoming 19th Ward Townhall Meeting, Ms. Rugai could explain to the voting taxpayers of the 19th Ward about her several required trips down to the Federal Building.

Pappy,

I'm sorry for such a vague posting. It has nothing to do with the school or faculty there. It has everything to do with upper CPS folks downtown. My child wanted to transfer there and we were PROMISED he would get in. Needless to say a week before school, after I already withdrew him from his other school, they called us downtown for another meeting saying they made a mistake. There are many more details I don't wish to get into on here right now, but stay tuned....

I just wanted to reply to let you know for peace of mind that the school and faculty are great (one of the reasons we wanted to transfer) and if they said no from the get go last March, we would have walked away. BUT, they didn't and everything they did and said was a lie. We really got put in a bad situation because of it so I'm going to fight back to be sure nobody else has the same experience.

Pappy said...

Anonymous: I am sorry to hear that happened to you guys, and I believe you. You are not the first person to relay a story abot that crappy situation where someone was promised a seat and then suddenly that seat was no longer being offered, of course AFTER you already withdrew your kid from his other school. It's such BS and not fair, especially for the kids. I'd say go take it up with Rugai, but that will probably get you nowhere unless you have clout, which it does not appear so based on your current situation. Oh ya, and I am sure you are a taxpayer, so she won't care about you anyway. I wish you the best of luck, especially for your kid's sake. Don't give up. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for your encouragement Pappy! Unfortunately, after my original attempts with the principal (good guy, just wasn't responsive) going nowhere I did go to Rugai and all she did was forward my note to Matt O'Shea who never did call me. That's when I took it upon myself to meet with the folks downtown. I wasn't going to give up without a fair shot because I am a taxpayer and live in the neighborhood. That's when all the promises started, but like I said.....they went nowhere. 3 days before school they told me they made a mistake and said "ya know, Morgan Park is your neighborhood school". In which I replied...I'm sorry, but we wouldn't consider it because of safety issues. After I left a message for Huberman I get a call from an attorney and others saying that I said I wouldn't send him there because it's primarily black. NOT TRUE! Now they are putting words in my mouth and trying to turn it around? I don't think so! In the meantime, the school I withdrew him from was already in session for almost 3 weeks and we were placed in another public school 10 miles away. It's a great school, but the 1 hour round trip commute is killing me having to get other kids off for the day and head to work myself. I'm up at 5:30 and not to work until 10 a.m. Are they going to reimburse me my time and gas? Heck no.
