I see that the fine citizens of Altgeld are demanding that Carver be reopened for them so they can have a neighborhood school.

I agree. All Neighborhoods should be able to send their children to High School without fear. Using the Reverends JJ'ss logic the Ag school should be open to Mt Greenwood and Beverly only.

Please return to the old format. We should all recognize that there are dishonest, non-truth tellers out there. Don't let them infringe on those of us who like to hear other's anonymous opinions.

1917: With a team built on pitching, and speed on the bases the White Sox were poised to become the class of the American League. On the mound Eddie Cicotte would dominate the American League Hitters all year compiling a 28-12 record with a league low 1.53. Also dominating the league on the mound for the ChiSox were Red Farber, and Reb Russell who each held AL batters to ERAs under 2.00. The White Sox would go on to win a franchise record 100 games, and would win the pennant by nine games. In the World Series the White Sox would be matched up against the New York Giants. The White Sox wore Red, White and Blue uniforms all season in a show of support to US forces that were fighting a World War in Europe. To further honor the troops the Sox decide to play "The Star Spangled Banner" prior to Game 1 at Comiskey Park. It was the first time the song was played before, a game and it would soon go on to be common practice. The Sox would go on to win that game 2-1 on Happy Felch's 4th Inning HR. The Chisox would also take Game 2 with the help of six singles in the 4th inning, which brought in five runs. With the series shifting to New York for the next two games the Giants would bounce back to shut the Sox out twice to even the series at two games a piece. With the final three games set to alternate between Chicago and New York Game 5 would most likely be the key to claiming the World Championship. Things looked bleak for the Sox as the Giants took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. However, with the help of big two-run double by Chick Gandil the Sox would even the score in the seventh inning, in the following inning Eddie Collins singled in the go ahead run. The Sox would tack on two insurance runs to capture the pivotal 5th game 8-5. In Game 6 back in New York the White Sox would score four runs thanks to three Giant errors to capture their second World Champ ionship 4-2. Little did anyone know at the time it would be the last World Championship for the White Sox in the 20th Century.

Bruce,

I'd like to know the pros and cons of making the Ag School a neighborhood school. What % of spots would be filled by neighborhood residents? What % of students currently in the neighborhood have to leave the neighborhood to attend other CPS schools (Morgan Park). I don't know if these numbers are available for discussion.

My 13 year old loved it. I guess it is about 15 to 20 minutes long and pretty scary. From what I hear, you can get a $5 off coupon from Bourbon Street.

Personally I liked the new format ... I think if you have something useful or fun to bring to the table you should not be afraid to bring to the table ... You are not giving away national secrets ... I give it a week before the nasty comments start. Better that that a day.

I am glad we are trying the old format again! The point I had been trying to make is that not everyone is a shit starter, but may have important info people want to know about but they are afraid of getting their personal info out there. In and around, I am not saying you would divulge email addresses to people, but one can never be too careful. Life's too short, you can choose to not read the posts that bother you, same as you told others to ignore your posts about baseball if it bothered them. Same concept.

No one expects absolute truth in a blog, they expect to learn about the issues that concern their neighbors. They may be afraid to divulge their identity because of social, political or economic consequences...but their concerns are valid and should be shared. I'm delighted that the anonymous entry has returned.

Is it worth it? I am sorry, but I have to get this off my chest... I went there with my 8 year old and my oldest sisters two kids (6 & 8) and I have got to say I was not impressed! Since when has the Bourbon Street Haunted house started busing in the west side? As usual, I sent the kids off to play while my husband and I waited in the line. I looked over and my 8 year old was on the ground and my niece was crying with a bloody nose! I look and see a group of young teenage west side honor roll students taunting and teasing them! When I went over to address the problem I see one of the ghetto bunnies wearing my niece's north face fleece her mom had bought her last Christmas! (I knew it was hers by the small stain on the left sleeve!) I inquire as to how "shaniqua" ascertained her jacket and shaniqua replied "*F* you *B* I earned dis! Now walk off!" I grabbed my crew, AND JACKET and left ASAP! Before leaving I went to Bourbon street (I was a bit irate, so my apologies to the door man there... my frustration should not have been taken out on you) and in a less than polite manner asked about security at the haunted house.. I was told it is nottheir responsibility and blah blah blah... bottom line is I have talked to more than a few moms and apparently this haunted house is becoming quite the hang out for west side savage so be very careful and keep your eye on your babies... And as a real kicker, as I was leaving I see 2 squad cars pull up and start talking to the ghetto trash, and they were pointing at me and my victimized kids... THEY ACTUALLY CALLED THE POLICE ON ME!!! obviously nothing happened and the suburban cops realized this was just a ghetto game of who calls the cops first wins and didnt give them the time of day...very sad to see this but figured we should all know what is going on in our back yard... 60655 sorry I didnt log on but I am not very computer saavy...

1906 - The hitting problems of the White Sox became so prevalent that the local newspapers gave the nickname of 'The Hitless Wonders". The Sox hit an embarrassing .230 as a team and just had seven home runs from the entire team all season. However White Sox pitching was strong enough to carry the load and as the team compiled a 19-game August winning streak to catapult them into the driver's seat for the American League Pennant. The Sox would end up winning 93 games and held off the New York Highlanders by three games to earn a trip to their first World Series. Not many people in Chicago noticed the White Sox hitting struggles and sudden rise to the top because across town the Chicago Cubs were compiling a Major League all-time best regular season record of 116-36. The Cubs sat tall and cruised into the first intra-city World Series, while the White Sox struggled until the very end. Going into the World Series no one gave the White Sox a chance, but for the hitless wonders more the bragging rights were on the line, and they wanted to show the entire city of Chicago they belonged. With both teams being from the Windy City it was decided that the games would alternate between the Westside home of the Cubs, and the Southside home of the Sox. Game 1 was played in cold conditions with periodical snow flurries holding down turnout. The White Sox would catch the series' first break when Cubs catcher Johnny Kling who dropped a ball and allowed the Sox first run to score. The Sox would add another to hold on to a 2-1 win in enemy territory. In Game 2 the Cubs got revenge by invading the Sox home with a 7-1 white washing. The Sox would bounce back in the 3rd game as Ed Walsh frustrated Cubs batters all day to a 2-hit shutout. However in Game 4 it was the White Sox who were frustrated as they fell victim of a 2-hit shutout from Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown. With each team alternating wins on the other team's field in the first 4 games, the series would come down to a best two of three and the winner of Game 5 would in Cubs territorial West Side Grounds would clearly hold the upper hand. Things looked bleak early for the White Sox as the Cubs soared to a 3-1 lead after the 1st inning. For the White Sox to win they would need a rare offensive performance from the hitless wonders. Led by Frank Isbell who smacked four doubles, and George Davis who drove in 4 runs the White Sox scored 8 runs on 12 hits and beat the Cubs 8-6 to gain to gain a 3-2 lead in the series. In Game 6 back at Southside Park the White Sox knew if they were to claim the World Championship, and city bragging rights winning the 6th game was a must. The Cubs would score in top of the first, but the lead, and hopes of tying the series again, lasted for less than half an inning. The Sox loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning when George Davis hit one into the crowd of fans standing in right field. Wildfire Schulte claimed that as he tried to catch the ball, a fan pushed him from behind the rope that separated the standing-room crowd from the players. The umpires missed that little detail and awarded Davis a double. Jiggs Donahue then doubled to left field, driving in two more. In the second inning the Sox would get the knock out punch with three more runs. The White Sox would go on to win 8-3 to claim their first ever World Series Championship. The losers share of $439.50 for the Cubs is the lowest ever.

You can use the excuse that posting anonymously "protects" your family (belive me, I've heard goofier excuses), but the bottom line is that in order to have a productive, meaningful discussion among neighbors, we should all stand behind our words.

It's funny how forcing people to take responsibility for their own comments really turns them off. Let me ask this of everyone who loves to be the random, anonymous poster: Would you say these things to your friends, family or neighbors? If not, then don't post the comments. Period.

It's about honesty, courtesy, transparency, and everything that is good about the freedom of speech. I won't go so far as to call anonymous commenters "cowards," but I do ask you this: If the issue is so important to you, then why are you afraid to take responsibility for your comments?

I've experienced a reduction in comments and stories posted by neighbors on the Southwest Observer for the very same reason. But I stick by my theory that if we know who you are, and you know who we are, it makes for a more respectful, friendly conversation.

Anonymity, after all, breeds contempt.

To this poster who wrote about the problem at the haunted house ... You mean to tell me that YOU let your niece be the victim of a strong arm robbery and all you did was leave !!! It is that type of response that allows people to get away with these crimes ... YOU don't walk away, YOU do something about it ... I hope YOUR relative does not let YOU have charge of her niece again, because if that is all YOU are prepared to do that I would not trust YOU watching my kid ... Sorry 60655 but I had to get that off my chest ....

Wow! Inandaround didn't take long! You posted at 8:54am on 10-13 that anonymous comments were going to be allowed..didn't take long.. 11:54am on the same day, they pulled on their hoods and let it rip.. "ghetto bunnies", "shaniqua", "canadians", "savages"..apparently some people can not make a point, tell a story or report on something that goes on in 60655 without getting down to the slime level that they accuse others of being at. I say they deserve each other! That is why he/she did not report the "supposed incident" just as ignorant and low class if not more. I say forget the anonymous it's just a bunch of cowardly b.s.r's. Yes, I am anonymous on this one to! I don't need local psychos knowing who I am. I can play that game too!

I have to agree with Life's too short here also. It was your responsibility to call the police, to make it an issue, to call their bluff. This is why they come here and pull this crap, because too many here don't want to cause a scene and will walk away. Do the right thing, file a report, have them arrested, follow up at the court hearings. Don't just be a victim
To Southwest Observer, how is calling oneself whatever one chooses, being accountable for ones words? Any poster to call them selves Rich Daley, doesn't really make them so. And to answer your questions, yes, I would have no problem telling my friends and neighbors the same things I come here to say. I think people like the information they can find here which is what keeps people coming back! If it is info you don't care for, skip over it. We all do. I'm sure there are men who read here who don't want to read about designer purses and skip those posts. Some of us want to know what the police blotters won't tell us!

1917 - The Chicago White Sox won the World Series when the New York Giants left home plate uncovered and Eddie Collins dashed home with third baseman Heinie Zimmerman chasing him in helpless pursuit.

2005 - If the White Sox were to end their 88 years of futility they would have to start by dethroning the Champs, who were a heavy favorite despite the White Sox having the best record in the American League. Game 1 of the ALDS would end up being a statement as the White Sox pounded the Red Sox 14-2 led by two homers from A.J. Pierzynski and a three run homer by Scott Podesdnik who didn't hit a single homer during the regular season. Game 2 would be entirely different as Boston jumped out to an early 4-0 over Mark Buehrle. However, Buhrle would settle down the rest of the way as the White Sox rallied in the fifth Inning as they took advantage of a Tony Graffanino error by scoring five runs capped off by a three run homer from Tadahito Iguchi. With the game on the line hard throwing Bobby Jenks who took over the closer role in the final weeks nailed down a two-inning save to send the White Sox to Boston leading 2-0. Game 3 would go back and forth as the White Sox held a 4-2 lead in the sixth Inning. However, the Red Sox looked poised to explode as Manny Ramirez led off with a Home Run to cut the lead to 4-3, and then loaded the bases with no body out. Hoping just to prevent the Red Sox to take the lead Orlando Hernandez was brought into relieve Damaso Marte who didn't retire a batter. However, El Duque would top all expectations first getting Jason Veritek to pop up to first, then getting Graffanino to pop up to short, and striking out Johnny Damon to hold the lead. The White Sox would get an insurance run while the Red Sox would not threaten again as the White Sox won their first playoff series since 1917 with a three game sweep over the Red Sox.

I want to say this, my kids go to Casell seeing that my household is a single income and I have to kids and can't afford the bloated not worth it tuition at St. Christina. The kids had their last soccer game yesterday and at my 2nd graders game there was an altercation between one of Christina's "Christian" parents and our coach. This alleged Christian was telling his bovine child to knock over and hit our players seeing Christina looked as if they were going to lose. Our head Coach (seeing we have a total of 4 dads who volunteer their time) called the game because there is no need to expose our children to that type of environment. Then this asshat goes to the parking lot shoving one of our coaches and then getting and taking an open hand slap from him. I just wanted to get this out, "Thanks for ruining my kids and the other kids game. I know you think your child may have a chance at something professional besides eating but you are wrong. We had 20 kids asking why the bad man was yelling bad words at their coach and why the game had to end early. You sir are a punk and I hope you never cross paths with me in this neighborhood.

If there was a sexual assault at 109th and Kedzie, I sincerely hope that it was reported. The only way to get more police services (i.e., deterrent patrols) is to file accurate reports. If we all just take care of it ourselves then we won't get a bump in reports ...."calls for service".... and we won't get more patrol cars from 22! C'mon....we all need each others eyes to promote safety and get the offenders removed from our area the right way.

Curious and Curiouser
From our very own comment section, an interesting tidbit that might appear at a later date:

SCC,

I heard a rumor regarding everybody's 19th Ward Chinaman (can I use that term or has it been put into politically correct storage along with retard?)and her visits to 219 S. Dearborn.

It seems one of her 19th Ward party planners was promised a merit promotion.

When it didn't come he/she got wired up and went to Rugai's office. The disappointed merit candidate asked Rugai why the promotion didn't come considering that a "donation" had ben made to Friends of Rugai. Evidently the Alderman was recorded telling the candidate that the "donation" was not enough.

Tee Hee.

This should be interesting.
Given the largish amount of promotions that seem to come out of the 19th Ward, it would seem that a whole bunch of people might be sweating at being squeezed by the feds.

I just want to thank the officers who physically escorted me from Mt. Greenwood park monday night.

I was doing my usual laps around the park after work and had an interaction with 4 african american youths. I politely asked them to pick up after themselves after I observed one breaking a bottle on the walking path. I was replied with "F*ck you, you aint my daddy, we know our rights, hope you fall on that glass and get cut up"

Unfortunately I forgot to bring my cell phone with me so I just continued my laps. Then 2 squad cars pulled up. I thought how wonderful, someone else called the police on these thugs. WRONG. They had called one of there uncles who works here in 022. So I was asked by these 2 african american officers why I was using racial slurs to juveniles and how he could have me locked up. I was actually accused of breaking the beer bottle!

I was kicked out of my own park that I PAY TAXES ON. I am a 47 year old man. Im a mere 507, 175 pounds and I was looked at as the offender. I'm sorry for the rant but had to get this off my chest and wanted everyone to be aware.

That is uncalled for! I 5"02 and weigh 110 lbs soaking wet! I feel by standing up to the beast and getting my belongings back and letting those in control handle the situation was the ADULT thing to do! My brother in law is a police officer in Orland Park. Apparently lately there has been an influx of "canadians" there too... He tells stories of ridiculous calls for service that have become a norm since the "canadians" moved in. I did not feel that this was a situation that warranted a 9-1-1 call... You see, the way I was raised Mr. Know-it-all was 9-1-1 is for EMERGENCIES ONLY! If you want Mt Greenwood to become like the south/west sides where the police are used to make the kids go to bed, well I wont be apart of the nonsense! They want to act like savages, let them act like savages... I just wish they would do it in their own neighborhoods! I stood up to them... if more people would be as brave as a 5 foot nothin 100 and nothin white mom then maybe just maybe these ghetto thugs wouldnt be so comfortable in bullying whitey! The police dont scare these thugs, white people standing up to them does! So take some of your own advice junior and stop hiding behind 9-1-1! Ill see you at the next St Christiana basketball game... Ill be supervising the concessions!

Henry I know exactly what you are talking about... I too am a middle aged (atleast I still think I am middle aged) man born and raised in MTG... A few weeks ago (when the weather was nice) I was in the park doing laps... I have been retired from streets and sans for about 5 years now... it was around 830pm and it was pretty dark. I saw what was probably the same group of 4 shines doing their thing cooking out, and aside from their music being too loud pretty much minding their own... Midway through my second lap a dance off apparently broke out on the sidewalk, completely obstructing the normal flow of foot traffic... now as for me, I could care less, I could go around. But about 100 yards in front of me was an old timer (at least 75) with his walker trying to enjoy the evening air... When he gets to thug nation he stops and just stands there waiting for the dance off to allow him to pass... no one moves not one inch! So by the time I close in I am fuming! I go off on the thugs and after a few choice words were exchanged and a threat to call the cops on them they dispersed and the old timer went about his evening... I felt like I did my civic duty until I noticed the foursome wasnt leaving the area, but rather taking a slow stroll int the neighborhood! MY GOD!! WHAT HAD I DONE I thought to myself... So I continued with my laps and kept an eye on the traveling hip hop circus as long as I could... I didnt have my cell phone on me as until recent I have not had these types of issues... about 15 minutes later I see the same 4 sprinting out of a gang way shooting down from the east side of Central Park... they made it back to home base, got in their car and peeled off at a very high rate of speed E/B on 111th... about 3 minutes there was a flurry of squad car activity around the park and surrounding area... I gave the info I had to a cop but I dont think it did much good... I didnt hear whatever came of it but all I know is this place just isnt the same! Im just happy my house was paid for 25 years ago!

Charles Eberson III said...

Henry, I'm sorry but this mt.greenwood park "issue" has been discussed before and is and has been out of control for awhile now.

After numerous calling 911 and doing citizen patrols of the park to no avail I have came to a solution....let them have the park.

Just like when old man Daley built the Cabrini green projects which "Contained" these thugs and problems.....I say let these thugs have Mt.Greenwood park. Atleast they are not running through the neighborhood I would rather them be contained in the park.

Please understand my logic. When these gang thugs are at the park and someone calls 911 the police come and kick them out of the park so then they run through our neighborhood causing problems.

So let them have the park.

WARNING TO MTG SELLERS!!!

I have an interesting story... My brother in law is moving back to the area after being deployed in the Air Force for the past 8 years... He grew up at 109th/Hamlin so was THRILLED when he saw a nice Georgian on the market for a reasonable price... He went for a showing and found it a bit odd that the owner asked a hundred questions, almost as a background check... after talking with the guy for a while(a MTG lifer leaving for the golf courses of the sun belt), and after a few beers he discovered why... apparently a couple weeks earlier this guy gets a call... a showing was requested for the same afternoon "no realtors necessary" So the owner is thrilled as this would save him thousands on commission if he could sell it by owner. The lady shows up (white lady, toyota corolla, conservatively dressed in her 50s) she does not want to see the house, refuses a tour, and ON THE SPOT OFFERS 10% ABOVE ASKING PRICE and presents the guy with what appear to be legal documents. The owner thinks this is too good to be true and starts looking around himself and asking a few questions... He observes behind the "buyers" corolla a black escalade with a black male in front wearing a bow tie suit... He presses the lady more about her intentions with the house and she says she cannot discuss the nature of her business. He politely asks her to leave, and she does. However, the bow tie guy exits his vehicle and approaches the house. The bow tie guy rings the door bell furiously and starts banging on the door. After 15 minutes of harrassment the bow tie assailant leaves (yes, he did call the police but big shocker no one showed)... a week later, he receives paperwork from RAINBOW/PUSH COALITION saying that if he agrees to sell his house to anyone for less than 10% above asking price he will be sued for housing discrimination and that it was RAINBOW/PUSH's intention to purchase his property!!! Luckily, this MTG lifer chose to take his chances and tossed out the "warning" as he will not be bullied by some group of bullshit reverends, but be aware of what /who is trying to infiltrate our neighborhood!!! They may not be who they seem!!! Seriously, how long before someone with much less pride gives in... ESPECIALLY in this market! Hold on, MTG It's gonna be a rough ride!!!

60655 businesses be warned. I just found out that there is NO beat cop for Mount Greenwood. Apparently he is out on medical leave and has not been replaced. With the holidays coming up, I hope the commander does something good for the community and schedules another cop in the area.

In 1866, Charles A. Peverelly wrote, "The game of base ball has now become beyond question the leading feature of the outdoor sports of the United States ... It is a game which is peculiarly suited to the American temperament and disposition; ... in short, the pastime suits the people, and the people suit the pastime."

1910: On July 1st in front of a packed house the White Sox opened their new state of the art concrete stadium, White Sox Park; the stadium would play home for the Sox over the next 80 seasons. In the first game the Sox fans would go home disappointed as the St. Louis Browns blanked the hitless wonders 2-0. The year ends up being a disappointment as the pitching is no longer able to carry the poor hitting line up which hits an anemic .211. The Sox would go on to finish in 6th place with a 68-85 record.

So your niece being the victim of a strong arm robbery is not an emergency ??? All you did was give them the opportunity to do it to someone else. I stopped up at haunted house last night and they have no recollection of what you are talking about. I am starting to doubt that this happened. I will tell you one thing, if it did happen the way you say, then I would repeat my claim that I would not let you watch my kid let alone supervise the concession stand at Christina ...

On the 1st of December, 1955, Rosa Parks and four other people were sitting in the beginning seats of the black section of the bus. When more white people climbed in the bus, the driver moved the board back and asked these four to get up. The other three complied, while Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. The driver called the police and had her arrested. A very tiny hardworking Black women refused to be pushed around by the system that treated her unfairly, and she had the COURAGE to stand up for what she believed in.

You let the thugs get over on you and you want use the excuse that you were too small to do anything... I would prefer to use another word and it begins with C and ends in D. We have a system in place to stop this madness people ... use it ... stand up and be counted ... and you can be counted on ...

"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying “I will try again tomorrow”."

Well-Being-Check done at Mrs.Rickoli's place this morning. No Answer and the cops didn't boot in the door. Wonder why.I don't think she has any living kin in the area.

UPDATE: Mrs.Rickoli is in the hospital for her hip. After speaking with her I heard what happened. Apparently she was walking at the park and some young punks threw a piece of pizza at her and hit her in the neck. The pizza sause went down the back of her shirt and began to burn her neck/back. She rushed home to clean it up and took a spill in her kitchen.

She will be fine and special thanks to Carrol next door who found her.

...and NO she did NOT call 911 and she says she couldn't even identify any of these young thugs.

Thanks to all that were inquiring, I will let her know many people were worried.

Anyone here about the methadone clinic opening up right on 111th?

This will bring nothing but riff-raff through mount greenwood.

We need it, look at the three recent deaths from Heroin in the neighborhood, not counting the overdoses.

I could call myself MOM OF 3 TO BE and that would keep me anonymous, but why bother with creating a silly name that doesn't reveal my identity either? I don't go to his website, didn't even know one existed. So your point is????

I can't believe what I'm hearing here about what is occurring in Mt. Greenwood Park! Why were none of these victims at the beat meeting? The officers act like nothing is happening.....THEY DON'T KNOW about it if its not reported. They only respond when called, UNLESS, an issue is made, a special focus at the CAPS meeting. Then they would patrol there and act as a deterrant force. Go to the CAPS meetings and get the police on your side. Don't give up the gorgeous park to teen punks of any ethnicity.

Officer Densey Cole who worked/lived in 022 Dist. returned from Colorado today to Chgo. to continue his rehabilitation. Colorado gave him a glorious farewell, but did any of you in 022 hear of him returning? Here was a guy who just a week before his injury caught a burglar who was doing a number on the citizens of 022. Its bad enough that this dept. does not appreciate the work of our police officers, but we as citizens of Chgo. & his neighbor cannot forget him. I found out from an officer that he will be 39 years of age this halloween & that sending him a card would be great. Well my family & I will be sending a card each week to him. He told me to send the card to the 001dist. at 1718 S. State St with his name on it & they will get them to him. The time has come for us to do the right thing & show our appreciation.

Time to start chaining your patio furniture and grills.

There was a study done about Methadone Clinics and the surrounding area and ALL areas with a Methadone Clinic slowly but surely went to the dumps. I don't understand why people want to ruin a good neighborhood.

I apologize to my fellow bloggers. I know my White Sox rants are annoying people. I have joined a Chicago White Sox blog and will post all my information there.
I have this baseball fetish ever since my youth days. All though I never made the baseball team in high school I still volunteered as the batboy. My father has past away and me and him used to go to games all the time.

So here is my last White Sox comment...GO SOX!

As for neighborhood news my kid was knocked to the ground by a bunch of bullies at the park yesterday. It started over my son's lack of baseball skill's (like his old man)I was there and came to the rescue just in time. I yelled at the boy who then spit a large hocker at me but missed. I left with my kid. I wish my father had been around when I was bullied.

To whoever the ass is that posted this get your own name ... I will continue to post my White Sox stuff but only for 170 more days ... if do not like the baseball stuff do not read it ... and if you want to talk about my family, pick a time and place and we can discuss it man to man ... I say go back to the sign in format ... it looks like the asshats have returned ... as for the problems at the park if it is not reported the police can not do anything about, ergo it never happened ... if you our park to be safe ... report it and when they are caught prosecute ... but do not bury your head in the sand an dthen complain about it... otherwise you are part of the problem

Reclaim the park. Don't let it go to anyone who doesn't respect it and those who use it. Organize. Go in pairs at times when you know nonsense occurs. Take a cell phone and call 911. Take a camera phone or a camera. Get the cops involved and everyone else who just wants to complain but doesn't want to make it the haven it was intended to be. Its a great park. Teens shouldn't drink there. Vagrants shouldn't congregate there and use offensive language, gestures or actions. Why don't we focus on that.......?

The Real Life's Too Short said...

Sure no problem ... I started doing the baseball stuff last year and lot of people liked it ... The other reason is that it is a reminder that we are one day closer to spring ... It is also kinda fun looking new stuff up and learning things that I did not know like the white sox being the first team ever to play the National Anthem before the game which as everybody knows is done before every professional and amateur sporting event ... but I say go back to the sign in format ... I can already see the haters getting on here ... It just puzzles the hell out of me why people want to spread hate ... we all know that we have bad in all races ... I wish we did not ... I grew up in a racially changing neighborhood and witness it first hand. I went to a predominately black high school and I am white. I now how it feels to have the shoe on the other foot. I know we will never get to the point where we all sing Kumbaya together and I do not want these goofs hanging in the neighborhood commiting crimes. But what I can say is when I see a wrong I take action, I do something about it and do not say oh oh, I do not want to get involved ... they may find out where I live ... That my friends is how neighborhoods are lost.

Did you have their beat tag? They cannot lock you up for using a racial slur. They can if you use a slur with a threat however. They are like any teenager, pushing the limits. Take pictures/video and post it. Let the video speak for itself like a video did with the beating death and fight that made Chicago infamous two weeks ago. Their actions will speak louder than your words, so show the world what they are saying.

I agree that using other people's Identities when posting is wrong and immature. However, I feel more people are willing to come forward with info if they can do it anonymously. While during the sign in phase, we heard about Sweet Escapes, the purse place and taste of Mt. greenwood, all interesting and useful info I admit. But I also want to hear about nonsense happening at the park and within the neighborhood. The police blotter leaves that sort of info out, the ward office doesn't bother to inform the people, I bet most are clueless about the meth clinic, I know I was until I read it hear. I want to know when OUR beat car is pulled elsewhere, CPD officers posting here anonymously give us that info.
Life's too short: we know you don't care for this format and you don't want race brought into comments. I say move past those comments then. Not everyone enjoys your long baseball posts, most of us just skip past them and move on. You can do the same thing when you see posts that you don't care for. Or better yet you can start at Chicago Baseball history blog in which posters must sign in.

Has anyone had any problems with The Private bank since it took over Founders???

Life's Too Short said...

Mary Carol I am so suprised at you ... The reason I say not to focus on race is because we should rise above that ... I agree I do like the idea of issues of importance being posted on the blog ... when they are accurate and informative, which many are not they are based on rumor ... I am a Chicago Police Officer and When I check out my information I go to the source, so it leaves the rumor part out ... Like the non factual information given out about the haunted house ... I checked it out at the source, funny knowbody could confirm the happenings ... I plan on walking the park in the evening to check out those rumors ... why because it is our park, our neighborhood ... How about this ... Why don't all parents start walking the park on Friday and Saturday nights between 7-10 ... strength in numbers, the teenagers would know they are being checked up on ... as for the beat car dileama, you have to go the caps meeting for that answer and not just the 10-15 seniors that show up at every meeting. And I offer you the same advice ... don't like my baseball posts ... don't read them ... just scroll on by ...

MaryCarol said...

When I don't feel like reading the baseball posts, I do just scroll by. I have no issue with doing that. As for race playing into things, you and I (as a city worker myself) both know that race plays a big part in what is happening here. As for walking the park, I could use more exercise, why not? Get a chance to meet other neighbors, get exercise, keep tabs on goings on in the park, I think it is a win win idea~

In response to Cupcake Mom.....after two weeks of observing dried human spew, all over the cash machine, I assume it was human anyway, I had to call Private Banks downtown office, the person who answered seemed put out, but transferred me to an equally putout co-woker. A couple of days later the spew was cleaned off. I also told them that the location was not very well lit, and that the cash station itself is out of maoey way to often. If those problems are fixed it will be good, if not its a sign of how little respect this neighborhood garners.

By the way, really, if you think TIF money is going to be used for the imagenary corner, forget it, not gonna happen, stick a fork in it its done. I live in Morgan park, 60655 goes all the way to Western ave, and all the way the same dispespect is shown. Does anyone remember what buisness was in the bank building before it was Mt. Greenwod bank? Good luck and love to all....

Umm, ok. Let's try this again for those of you who need things spelled out in a really simple manner. Here we bgo: I am Michael Fielding, and I am the editor of the Southwest Observer. See? Easy!

The only reason I post under that name rather than my own is obvious ... well, I thought it was. See, I'm a business guy, and it's sort of Marketing 101. You see the Southwest Observer name, you may be curious about it, so you visit the Web site. It's that simple. It's called branding. That's why I have a Facebook page and Twitter account. That's why our Web site has sponsored local events and covered everything from the South Side Irish Parade to high school sports to breaking news such as the Mt. Hope Cemetery investigation.

I'm proud of my contributions to the neighborhood (if you're unsure of what they are but are curious, please visit the Web site at www.southwestobserver.com).

If you're not curious, then go ahead and take your own advice by skipping over my post. That way you can return to anonymous name-calling and rumor-mongering ... the same kind of unproductive trash that had the Rainbow Cone force this very blog to no longer accept anonymous comments just a month or so ago.

That didn't last long, though, did it?

Michael Fielding, thank you for the introduction. While I admire your pluck and courage to put your name out there, I am not going to criticize those who are not as willing to give real names, many have sound reasons for not doing so. I am grateful for the useful info I get here and understand some folks need for anonymity. Can't we move on already?

Folks, there will never be enough police in this city. Daley will not hire any more and too many of those wearing the uniform are there because of clout or minority hiring practices. Both groups have too many bodies in uniform that are completely useless. There are some GREAT cops in this city but unfortunately, not enough.

I can sympathize with those of you who have been victimized in the park or the haunted house, but I caution you. These situations will only get worse unless citizens take matters into their own hands.

Buy a nice 4 oz can of pepper spray. It is good on dogs, fat naked children with bats, and teenage thugs of all races. Also, it will not leave them with any permanent physical damage. It can be used on one, two, or a group of thugs. Believe me, it works.

Use it, then leave the area. Do not wait for the police, because that will only complicate your life. You will instantly disable the offenders, and if you wish, when they are writhing in pain you can inflict any amount of permanent damage you wish.

P.S. Get the "gel" pepper spray that also marks them with a long-lasting dye. Great stuff!

You know, I am not a big supporter of the city or Rugai, but to the anon poster spreading this crap that 'there is no beat cop for mt. greenwood'...Let's clarify-first of all, you're right, there is no single beat cop for MTG-there is 6! 2 per shift! Plus a sgt for the bigger area, 2240 I believe is the beat. This aint frickin Mayberry with Don Knotts and his one bullett! (Even though it may seem like that sometimes! HaHa) Just because one is out sick, supposedly, he would be replaced by a rehire (overtime for those who don't speak the lingo). I work on an ambo in the area and believe me, 2211 is out there, doing there job as best they can. They go where they are told to go by the OEMC-they don't have a choice. If you attended the CAPS meetings, you could meet all of the 2211 P.O.'s and the Sgt. They will tell you straight up, if there is no call volume (ie MTG), the car will be sent east to assist in the higher crime areas. Stop spreading fear and gossipy crap that isn't true. I know some of the coppers on this site will back me up. If you're worried, exercise your 2nd amendment right and buy a gun to defend yourself if need be (screw Commrade Daley and his unconstitutinal ban that will not hold up in the Supreme Court challenge). Keep in mind our patches say "City of Chicago", not "Mount Greenwood", or "Beverly Police Service". 2211 beat is relatively small so they do get pulled A LOT! Get some facts before talking sh*t. I know you probably don't blame them personally, but let's not start unneccessary panic. My family and I liver here too. Do we deserve police protection? Absolutely. Do they need to sit here every minute of every day? No, that would be silly. Then some would be whining that they get paid to do nothing (just like the firemen around here). And when a copper does cruise thru on his way to or from work with his city car, people bitch and moan about "why is he here? This isn't his beat" blah blah.

St. Christina is not just the problem in sports. The 4th grade girls southwest conference basketball is ridiculous. The coaches from both Christina and Cajetan scream and yell from tip off and don't stop. I don't even think the girls can undertand what these middle-aged men reliving their youths are saying because they actually yell over each other. Did any of them actually play a sport? What message are they trying to send to these 9 year old girls? The Christina coach even said, "If I see you doing nothing out there again, I'm taking you out." I should say he screamed it in the angriest voice imaginable. Sure those girls are going to want to play basketball again you idiot. I actually wondered why the parents even let their kids play for these asses. How about teaching them the skills they need rather than screaming at them. Hey, arent's sports supposed to be fun? Oh wait, that's right. These middle aged fools have to win at any cost -- that's the message they're sending.

Pappy, 1.The CPD doesn't do rehires. 2.The Sgt is 2210. 3.There are 5 per day on 2211. Days only has one person on the Beat. 4.Beat 2211 is one of the largest Beats in the city. 5.These are concerned citizens worried about their neighborhood. They are afraid to lose what they have worked hard for. I understand that and agree with them. We need to keep our neighborhood safe and whole. I am a Policeman and think you are wrong. I think you are the one who should get your facts straight before talking "trash."
2211 tries, but is constantly pulled East (not their fault). They need to stay in our area for a few reasons. First, the train tracks can kill response times when something actually does happen here. Second, we are carrying the tax burden of this District and deserve at least one car per shift dedicated to our neighborhood. We should not be punished for being civilized.

Anon-Thanks for the info, I am not looking to trash talk anyone only looking to support the coppers that take a lot of crap for stuff that isn't their fault. And, this is not the only district or beat running with one PO per car during the day. The 3rd and 4th are also doing it (that is the area I transferred out of) and it is much worse over there. I agree, we deserve to have the police we pay for as taxpayers. But, thats part of the problem. We are taxpayers and mostly city workers and her highness knows we can't go anywhere so why appease us? I mean, c'mon, we had to pay for our own frickin park! If this was Englewood Jesse, Al, and Farakhan would have staged a god damn revolt! I do know cops get overtime somehow because it is paid in comp time to them (maybe court or paperwork or something, I don't know). And, I still stand behind my earlier statement that they are out here because I see them, 2211, when I am at work myself. I work on the very edge of their beat. And, I know the 22nd district is very large, but the actual 2211 is not, comparatively speaking, unless their beat has been realigned or expanded since the last time I looked in to it, admittedly, about 4 yrs ago. The bottom line is that the city does not have enough resources to serve its ever growing population-period. That goes for EMS, cops, snowplows, etc. And, unfortunately, you are right-we will continue to be penalized for being civilized. We don't use EMS like a free taxi ride, we don't call the cops cause Shamequa stole my forty and then punched me in the eye, there aren't mass drive buys on Homan, and there aren't out of control brawls at the Ag. So what do we do? What's the solution? Personally, I own 2 well trained, large dogs and my own personal protective device and know how to use it safely and properly. Is it the optimal solution to the problem? No. But, at least I know I am secure in my home if I have to wait 45 mins for the police to show up or if they get 'trained' on 111th. And, I have no problem detaining someone while waiting and I make sure to tell them that on the phone (it gets em here pretty quick when you tell them you are detaining someone who has committed a crime against you). Yes, I have done it. They were here in under 10 mins. Could be a coincidence, or not.

Out of control brawls at the ag? Pappy, you are out of your mind. I know you're nuts, but I wouldn't want new people here to think there is any truth to what you say. That is a safe, well run school. They take no BS from any kid.
