Okay, so I think the dicussion regarding race/prejudice/racism, etc. has been fully discussed. This discussion could go on for months, maybe even years. I for one am tired of the discussion, as are quite a few of the bloggers. Let's just drop it now. No more comments on the subject will be posted, so don't waste what I am sure is valuable time. This is a fresh open post.

Does anyone know if S&T is willing to join the Manna Group?

June 18, 2009 7:25 AM

That is a good question. I buy their setups several times a month (much cheaper than ordering pizza) and the beef is great, especially in summer when you don't feel like cooking. Manna would be great!!!

In response to the dog that bit the kid, it could be reported. I realize it's on his property, but was it chained up? A good family in Mt. Greenwood was forced to put their dog down because it felt intimidated by a kid that was on their property and bit her.

Illinois to start using Photo Radar in July !

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. One mile per hour over the speed limit and the machine will get you a nice $375.00 ticket in the mail. Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense. The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates.

This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement. The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. Pass this on to everyone you know who might be affected!!!

Slow down people and save yourselves some money and headaches. Also, you may save the life of a construction worker also!!

Anonymous said...

Re: Photo Radar in Work Zones...

I could support this if there were a limit on the number of work zones and the length of the zones, but apparently there is not. The state tears up miles and miles of highways for months and years at a time (I294 from 159th to 95th, for example). They inconvenience motorists, create dangerous road conditions, and cause us to waste huge quantities of expensive fuel.

Governor Quinn: Work on one mile of highway at a time. Finish that mile and move on to the next mile. We're tired of this game of rewarding politically connected road contractors with OUR money.

A Simple Explanation of the Manna Program
The Manna program is a program in which you buy gift
certificates for participating vendors (listing attached) for face value and in return you or someone you designate, receive a tuition credit. The School also receives a credit on each purchase.

All of the neighborhood Catholic Schools run a program. Some are called Manna, Fast, Stop, Sharing, etc.

I want to know when they will start sending speeding tickets to all the I-pass users on the tollways. All they have to do for that is calculate how much time it took you to get from one plaza to the next.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!

Thank you to inandaround60655 for ending the discussion on the race/prejudice/racism. It was to the point that I didn't want to even read the blag anymore because it was consuming to much space. Let's be honest.... nobody is ever going to be settled in today's society regarding this issue. Onto more important things that deal with this community!

CPmom said...

Thank you for the info on the Manna group. Does Brother Rice use the program??

inandaround60655 said...

Whatever parish you belong to (or pick a parish) runs some sort of program. I know for a fact that St. Christina has Manna and they pay out every August. If your child attends the school, the credit is sent to the school towards first month's tuition. If you have children in high school, a check is cut payable to the high school in August. It's useful as you get credit for the money you already spend, like Dominicks, Beggars, etc...the % is 7.5 for Bourbon Street, if your throwing a party there and buy $500 in certificates, then you just earned $37.50 towards tuition. Some percentages are low, some high. It's worth a try.

I was greeted by a teen at my door today with a flyer for the 19th ward. Nice try Ginger but it is still a no go.

We need more schools or additions from CPS. We need our free pre school just as other "in need neighborhoods" receive. You need to speak up and get them. We need the % increased for local ( Mt Greenwood not 19th ward) kids to get into the AG.

We need a police presence in 2211 all the time. No details out.

We need 111th and Kedzie to be built or dump the current decade of leaders who have failed to so their jobs.

We need you to speak up against the Mayor and his Olympic plans and put a stop to the sale and lease of City properties and services.

You want my vote for you or Matt....put up for a vote in City Council a "cease and desist" on the sale of any/all city property or services.

Give up your 6% raise.

With Ike "busy" stand up for the Police and Fire since you are the co chair.

Why would you want to try and defame a new business owner, from the neighborhood, that invested a TON of money and heart into his new business? You are offending him and his family and attempting to ruin him financially with your anonymous innuendos. JR Boz's is a great new community gathering place with extremely affordable ice cream, food and treats. Maybe that's why he doesn't accept credit cards! If you don't have the $1.50 cash for the cone maybe you need to rethink your priorities. I encourage others to come to his defense!

Anonymous said...

Why would a new business in the year 2009 take "cash only" and not credit cards? Maybe when a creepy ice cream store only wants children? Stay away from JR Boz's.

June 18, 2009 7:37 PM

Taking credit cards can eat up to 10% of the transaction cost. Give them some time. Till then, borrow some cash from your kid(s).

Anonymous said...

Um, is there something we should know about JR Boz's? Just not taking cash isn't reason to show up with torches and pitchforks.

CpMoM said...

Okay, who attended the CAPS meeting? approx. 20 people showed up;

Nippsy Russell said...

Running a credit card transaction costs the business a pretty good chunk of change. If Boz's business gets well established I'm sure that will change. S & T has been operating here for forty years or so, they don't take credit cards. So next time you go to Boz's bring cash. You're not buying a car over there, give the guy a break. He's offering a great alternative to Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen or Rainbow cone. Most people in the neighborhood can walk there. And that's pretty cool.

There are many of us business owners in the area who don't take credit cards. As a matter of fact, a lot of us won't take checks either.

Credit cards do cost us money to accept. Most credit card companies take a percentage of the total sales of the month right off the top before they distribute the money back to the company. As far as checks, anyone who takes a check in this day and age are fools. Way too many of us have been stiffed on bad checks too. And just try to collect the money from the customer. You have to take them to court and who needs that hassle.

So I can definitely agree with JR Boz's policy of cash only. It' sht only safe bet for a small business these days

Anonymous said...

YES THEY DO

Anonymous said...

Regarding credit cards. Not only is there a transaction fee for each purchase based on the amount of the transaction, if you have a REWARDS card the fee is higher and if you have a business credit card the amount is even higher. Also the Business owner must pay a rental fee each month for the equipment they use. This is another $100.00 or more a month depending on the company that you use.
If a business owner accepts credit cards he may not refuse use of it for any purchase amount no matter of how small. So if you use a crdit card for a small amount say $3.00 the business owner is making absolutely no profit.

Aldi's doesn't accept credit cards, only debit cards. Sam's Club only started to accept credit cards about a year ago, but only Mastercard and Discover so if you have a Visa you need cash. Now should we stop going to them because they may be preying on our youth?
Why would anyone want to discredit someone else without knowing what they were talking about in the first place? What kind of person would be that malicious trying to ruin someone else's business. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!

For all you people living in the hood, YOU NEED TO WAKE UP.... For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, two North American Felons were run out of the neighborhood attempting to prey on the elderly residents in the neighborhood.

At approx. 2:30p.m.on 19 Jun an alert neighbor spotted the 2 male negros in the garage of the 80 y.o. couple as they returned home (11200 block of Troy)from grocery shopping. The 2 villians were attempting to shake downthe couple when they were run off, only to continue further noth and enter anotehr neighbors garage and attempt to shake them down.

The police were called by the "off-duty detective" neighbor only to be told there were no police the 022nd District was in a "RAP".

How amazing is it that a 022nd District car is assigned 24 hours a day to the Racine Courts housing complex rain or shine!!! But nocar available for the neighborhood here?????

I don't believe so, there was another block on the house that was for sale. Some people moved in to rent and left the place looking like crap. The owners moved to like Wisconsin whilw these people rented. I guess 2 mortgages got the best. Anyways, there was a water disconnection notice on the door before. And the other day I saw some kind of sign hanging in the window. I am only guessing that it was this particular house. Only 2-3 doors down from sec. 8.

TWO THINGS -

JR BOZ was nice and friendly when we went -however to be honest they sell Edy's ice cream -i can buy that any grocery store - nothing fancy nothing special. Very nice people though. They should look into carrying green river. I prefer Lindy's Gerties over JR boz.

Second the 19th ward girl showed up at our house asking us what we wanted -still waiting on our tree to be trimmed. Or someone to kill it. The roots are growing into my side walk / front yard and house. and Ginger doesn't care. IN Fact her oh so great assistance thought it would be wonderful to replace the side walks last year that are up rooted by our big old tree instead of fixing the problem -the tree. They are just growing back again Up rooting the sidewalks. Just take down our tree and plant a new smaller one! DUH!!!!

Maybe The kids didn't know SHE was out,her and dogs were both in garage. Dogs will be dogs and kids will be kids shared blame blah blah bottom line if your dog can do this much damage get a bigger fence so that small children can't jump over it. If you have kids in the neighborhood that do sometimes go after lost balls, what happens on in your yard is your fault so protect yourself from blame and children from mean ass dogs.

If the cop was in the garage why didn't the kid yell out to him to get the ball ??? And let me tell you something else ... Jack Russell terriers are not quiet dogs ... Next time kid ... RING THE DOOR BELL ... or go to the park and play ... And finally ... The reason you do not like the Mixer is because he he/she speaks the blunt truth ...

Wow just turned on by a neighbor regarding this website, I won't be stranger. Go to foreclosure.com and see how many homes in our zipcode are up (181) for foreclosure. Also regarding the police presence in this ward we had an instance where an african-american male was stuck in our alley (Com-Ed alley it is grass)it was around 10pm, and upon calling the police that took them awhile to send someone he took of running and when was caught he was wanted in Harvey for murder and had guns and drugs in his trunk. Happened again where an african-american 2 months later got stuck again but this time the 911 operator told my neighbor why should we send a patrol officer just cause he is black? He explained what happened 2 months earlier, 2 other neighbors called but still they never sent anyone. He eventually got out. Upon talking to a police officer that I know he said the first thing you say is you want a copy of this call sent to your house and you'll see a difference in their attitude. BTW the 911 was african-american.

I wish!!! nice raise, good hours, instead I am working 10 hours a day (12 with the commute) with my fingers crossed that when raises come around, I get one. I work for lawyers, feel sorry for me? I actually moderate this blog from my cell phone 90% of the time. It's actually funny when I hear people on the train talking about the blog, I have heard people say that "its really a man" or "it's my neighbor's cousin." Nope.

This person might want to rethink his/her "good source." About 10% of the readers of this blog actually know who I am, and the only reason I stay anonymous is because the hubby is a city worker, he's afraid that I will piss someone off and he will get screwed. Actually, one of Ginger's aides actually knows that I do it, because when I got it up and running, I emailed the site to my contact list and I saw that it was emailed to this person too later in the email tree. :)

To the Mixer:

Hmmm who do think called the media ?? ... Why the people who live there of course ... Who do you think the graffitti artists were??? I will bet money it was the people who live there of course ... this is a scenario that has been played over and over. African American family moves into the white Mt. Greenwood neighborhood. Starts acting like they do when they lived in Englewood. Neighborhood becomes outraged/ afraid/ panic sets in about home values ... Crime ... drugs .... so the neighborhood ... they start calling the police on these people who then get arrested. Now comes the poor African American family crying racism ... attacks on them because they are black = let's see if we can get on the news, sue the police, sue the owner of the house, sue the neighborhood. You know there has been African American families living in this neighborhood for years without any incident. Why ??? because they do not act like savages ... They keep up their property, they respect their neighbors, they respect each other, and their neighbors respect them. The sooner the people on Whipple move the better for them and the people on that block ... and not because of race ... because they have no respect for what good people do or are trying to do or have been trying to do.

MIXER said...

Village Voice - I understand what you are saying and that is all very possible but I highly doubt that a single woman with 3 small children would write "N****r" on her own door in order to attract media attention or start a lawsuit. That word is beyond reprehensible. If the renters are doing things that are inappropriate then deal with it with the landlord or the police or the same way you would deal with any local issues, but don't drop down to the lowest level of pond scum and call them names like that. It only makes the neighborhood look bad. Finally, these people are only there temporarily by their own admission! This is not going to contribute to the downfall of Mt. Greenwood the only thing it accomplished was that it told the rest of the world what kind of people still live in Mt. Greenwood. They added another chapter to the media's collection of "Mt. Greenwood the Racist Community" in google search. Unfortunately, maybe that's the message the people, the grafitti artists, really want to get out. That's the really sad part that people are so desperate to maintain this homogenous little pocket of the world that they would desire to brand themselves and the community in this hateful way.

Village Voice said...

Mixer ... My understanding is that is more the a woman with three small children staying there if that is the house I am thinking about ... I agree writing the "N" on the property serves no purpose, even though many African American routinely address each other with that word ... That has always puzzled me ??? Why is it OK for one African American to address another by saying Hey N***** or What's Up N***** but when a white person says it, it is disrespectful.

You know I usually agree with you, but the reality is because our neighborhood is and has been a target, the topic that we can not talk about anymore is still a worthy topic. My reasons why:

Because it gives us the opportunity to vent in a public forum.

It gives us a chance to express ourselves. Some of the comments are good, alot bad. But maybe it gives a chance for some people to look in the mirror and say to themselves am I that Big a Hypocrite.

We still live and a somewhat racist society ... oops I said that word ... But I remember what it was like when I was a child growing up. I can honestly say that things are much better than years past ... I try to teach my kids that all people are good, but that there some bad ones too regardless of r***. We have come so far as a nation in the last 50 years that I hope it will be even better after the next 50.

Remember these words by Martin Luther King: "Live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

And in the violent neighborhoods of Englewood, The Westside, and the lower Eastside ... These words by MLK should echo through minds and souls of every African American, Hispanic, and White man who would do harm to another:

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.

Many people I know make fun of the man ... But once you become a student of history, you realize he was more to America than a black man for black people. He embodied the American spirit.

Remember my friends:

If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.... Ronald Reagan

and lastly:

If you can share a foxhole with a black man in the battle for freedom ... you should be able to share a neighborhood.

I mean come on pleeze, "Nigger" thats as close to KKK as you can get. And if it's kids that just means that they are hearing it at home. That's just wrong and it makes me sick. Even Village Voice had a dangling question about why blacks can call themselves that but we can't, I have an answer for that too! But no one will hear it. I just think it's terrible that you got a super lively conversation going about race that maybe people can learn from on all sides but it's going to end again. As you can see these people just can't help themselves! I prevail upon you once again, make a seperate blog and anyone who wants to enter, enters at their own risk. Regarding the dog incident---
Many of the facts you presented were very vague and misrepresented. First of all, this was not a little boy. This was an 11 year old child(who knows right from wrong) that made a decision against his better judgement to go into the dog owner's yard. He made a choice to go into that yard after being told numerous times to stay out and ask for any balls that were lost in the yard. As residents of 105th street we are all upset by this incident. Some of us are dog owners(with and without kids), some of us are not dog owners. Do we have to put barbed wire up to protect ourselves, our dogs, and our property from children that blatently disrepect what is asked of them by another adult? The children on the block were given the same direction as this child. The children on the block all knock on the owner's door or call out to the owner in the back yard when a ball goes over. Secondly, about the chain link fence--That is actually the other neighbor's fence that seperates the two yards, so why is it the dog owner's responsibility to replace a fence that does not belong to the dog's owner? Yes, there is a piece of plywood that is four to five feet tall blocking the back, but only because of property line issues from the surrounding neighbors that would not allow for the fence to continue through. The plywood is not only secured into the ground, but also blocked by a small wall of bricks. We all feel bad that this child was injured, but why do those of us that do not have children have to be responsible for other people's children? When are parents going to take responsibility for their child's actions rather than trying to find someone else to blame? This child needs to own up to what he did. The fact that you stated he thought he could get in and out because there were no dogs in sight shows that he knew better than to be in that yard. We need to stop this kids will be kids garbage and make children responsible for their own actions.

I live in the neighborhood where the child was bitten by the dog. Under the State of Illinois Statutes if someone enters your fenced yard without permission that person is trespassing and the owner of the dog is not liable. This child (11 years old)has been told by several neighbors to stay out of their yards. Don't be fooled that this is an innocent child. This is not the first time this child has been in trouble for not respecting adults or any other authoritative figure. He has been taught it is OK to sneak in and out of someones yard and hope he doesn't get caught. This child has been banned by parents in the neignborhood from playing with their children because he is such a bad influence. Ask him what he was doing 5 minutes before he went over two other neighbors fences. He was hitting Rocks with his Bat into the dog owners yard and the dog owner yelled at him to stop doing it!!! Did he NO!! It is very unfortunate that this is the way this child has been raised. Where is the parent when all of this is going on? At work? Is he left unsupervised while the parent is at work? Possibly this parent should wake up and take some responsibility for the child's actions. Maybe the parent should be home teaching him right from wrong. This dog owner is not at fault the parent of the child is. The parent should be held accountable for the child's actions. Do you feel sorry for the child? Absolutely. He doesn't any better.

In reference to the CHILD bit by the dog, the while he was 11, he is still a CHILD. Yes an 11 year old should and probably does know right from wrong. Most peole I know, including myself, did not always make the right decision - and that is how children learn - from their mistakes.
If it is true how the owner of the dog acted, I am not surprised the dog bit someone. Sounds like a lot of hostility. Glad he is not my neighbor!

The people responding about the kid bit by the dog obviously don't have kids! Yes at 11 they should know right from wrong, they should respect their elders, etc. etc. Go back down memory lane people....kids will be kids! That would be the day I hollered at a child for entering my yard for a ball. Give me a break! The good family I know had to put down their dog (well mannered)didn't scream and holler for kids to stay off their property and it happened on their property, they still had to put the dog down. Shame on the crabby ol' grouch and his mutt!

All of this talk about the dog biting the child reminds me of my childhood(1960's). If I had come home crying about getting bit by a dog. My mother would have asked me what happened. If I told her that my ball went into someones yard and I hopped the fence to go get it and got bit by the dog. And if she knew that I didn't go ask the owner of the house to get my ball. She would have given me a good spanking AND she would take me to that man's house to apologize to him for being irresponsible in the first place. Wake up parents and stop blaming others because your little Johnny doesn't know right from wrong. If more parents were responsible, their kids would be too.

Dogs will be Dogs said...

Just like "kids will be kids", we can take the road that "dogs will be dogs" and protect their property and their owners. Seriously is that the attitude our society is going to take. As a person who does have children I feel this child had no business in this dog's yard. I have tried to teach my children that you have one yard you belong in and that is your own. When did other people's private property become public property? Shame on you for thinking that all of the people responding do not have children, That would mean that we were all raising our children with this "kids will be kids mentality" where we should blame everyone but ourselves. The rest of us our raising our children to have morals. If this owner did indeed have a fenced in yard for the dogs then the owner has done everything right to protect outsiders. If someone chooses to trespass (child or adult), watch out cuz dogs will be dogs!

YOU SHOULD NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ. This dog owner is a wonderful person. There were several witnesses to what happen (the parent neglected to mention that). When the child was bitten by the dog the dog owner did everything she could to help this child. The parent could not be found. The child did not know where to find the parent. The dog owner did not yell and hold the dog up to the child's face. She helped him more than I can say about the parent. Where was she leaving a child unsupervised.
The majority of the neighbor's who live around the dog owner do have children and also have dogs.
We are not yelling at children to stay out of our yards because we are "mean". We do not want them to get hurt climbing fences. What if the child had fallen off the fence and had serious injuries. Who's fault is it. Would the homeowner get blamed? We are trying to protect this child since he has been raised by a parent who is irresponsible.
ASK THE PARENT WHERE SHE WAS WHEN THE CHILD WAS IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM? INSTEAD OF BEING WITH HIM TO COMFORT HIM SHE WAS AT THE DOG OWNERS HOUSE HARRASING HER.

AND YOU WONDER WHY MT GREENWOOD GETS A REPUTATION OF BEING "HILLBILLY TRASH".

ITS PARENTS LIKE HER THAT DOES NOT TEACH HER CHILD RIGHT FROM WRONG.

MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE PARENTING CLASSES TO TEACH PARENTS HOW TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN!!!!

Shame on me? You're comparing a human to an animal. What kind of nutcase are you? We live in what's called a neighborhood for a reason and if you can't get along with your neighbors well enough for your kid to hop a fence to get his ball then shame on you! My kid does have morals. Maybe if you and your kids got some you'd get along with your neighbors and wouldn't have this crazy philosophy!

Let's see how long before the parents of the kid bitten by the dog files a lawsuit. I'm sure we're exploring our options as we speak about it!!

"Please note I did say kid should not have been in the yard in the 1st place, but should we as neighbors be worried that a storm may blow down the plywood in place of a fence letting the tiny little dog that did so much damage out into the neighborhood? Thoughts please." Thanks for the thoughts now I know.

I'd like to add that I love dogs and grew up with them in my home. I agree that the parent is at fault for not being home or having any type of supervision for an 11 year old, but the poor kid suffered here and it's not his fault he has a horrible mother!

Re shame on me--Ha Ha you are funny. I get along great with my neighbors. Also, if I lived on this block I would totally back the dog owner because they are in the right. Hope your kids don't live on this block because with the mentality you have that kids could jump any fence they want might get your kid hurt. Some poeple treat their dogs better than other's treat their kids.

Kids will be kids, but then why is the white trash mother in the owner's face. Is the owner supposed to keep the dog in the house until she decides to supervise her child. What is the owner supposed to do with the dog? I have kids but my kids also have consequences. You do something you shouldn't be doing and you pay the price. If she or anyone else slamming the owner know anything about dogs, they are territorial. If you come on their property uninvited, they will protect it and their families. You better believe she's looking at a lawsuit right now. It's her mealticket.

The children WERE supervised! They were playing in one yard, with parent home. And yes - the owner did HOLD THE DOG (WHOSE MOUTH WAS DRIPPING WITH BLOOD) up to the CHILDS face and yell at him! The CHILD was in shock, and would not let go of the fence - not that he wouldn't leave - the CHILD was in SHOCK - blood was pouring down both his legs, and a CRAZY LADY WAS HOLDING THE BLOOD SOAKED DOG THAT JUST MAULED - not bit, MAULED - HIM, AND SCREAMING!

I cannot believe all these people attacking a CHILD.
Maybe YOUR perfect children can come give this CHILD some tips on how to be so perfect!

Recent dog attack unless you were there I would keep the parent and kid bashing to myself. I have tried to stay out of it but I was there, and poster anonymous from 105th that said this is what makes Mt Greenwood white trashy, I think it maybe neighbor bashing on the internet that does that. Were you there? Nope I was one of three adults there and you weren‘t. I live directly behind the dog and saw the immediate aftermath of the attack not bite. I won’t post my name but those of you on 105th should be able to figure it out. The boy had no right to be in the yard. Yes, you are right, we ALL agree there. If you weren’t posting anonymous I’d be happy to share with you what I saw in the aftermath in person. The dog owner was near hysterical unable to even give me the dog papers. I may have been too had it happened in my yard. Maybe that is why the mom had to go over there to get the papers. I don't know. I have said from the start I want to stay out of it that is until I read this blog. Since it seems that you all have issues with the boy aside from his fence jumping, I think the best way solve them is bad mouthing a an 11 year old kid and his parents on a blog site not white trashy at all. As for our neighbor that is so upset by the attack you should be, there is a now known to be vicious dog living on your street you are right to be upset. I am. My kids didn’t hop the fence and wouldn’t move a board but I have returned a lost dog to that backyard. I know that was not the case this time, the kid was in the dogs yard we ALL got that part. I am upset by the whole fence issue ANYONE can move a board the keeps a dog capable of doing this much damage to a kid (your opinion of the boy is not relevant)if the dog ever gets out it could be any one of our kids. At this point a good fence is the only thing that has a direct effect on my kids. Like I said I know from a personal experience that a dog can get out of that yard, I retuned a lost one to the dog owner. I wouldn’t think of asking someone to put their pet down, and my kids were not in that yard but I don’t think I am out of line when I ask being a surrounding neighbor and all, What can I do to help get a non removable fence in place back there? Grow up people!!

I know alot about dogs I have two myself again I live right behind the little dog I also know how easy it is for them to get out of the yard and I am not bashing the owner the dog yes if he gets out and gets your kid you'll see that not all dogs would attack a kid but we now know for sure this one would I think in or out of his yard he would. There should be a fence.

It seems there are comments (including my own "kids will be kids") giving opinions of who's right and who's wrong regarding the vicious attack on a CHILD. I'm glad people that live on the block have submitted theirs to help make sense of what happened. I'm sure the owner doesn't feel good about it, but regardless people, a child was attacked and how would you react if it was your child? The fact that your child hopped a fence to retrieve his ball wouldn't at all enter your mind. The fact that he was attacked is the issue. Now I read the dog has gotten loose and it could happen to any kid in the area? If my dog attacked anybody, he would be put down. Dogs are not meant to be vicous animals....they are meant to be family pets. I've seen family pets turn on their owner. They are animals....it happens. Their bark is what makes them guard dogs....not their teeth! The only exception is if they are threatened by an intruder or somebody attacking their owner/family......not a harmless little kid. I feel bad for all of them....the whole situation is terrible!

I think the person who lives behind the dog owner needs to go back to school and learn some grammer!! Also, did you ever ask the 2 owners who lived in the house before you why they moved? Do you know why you have such a tall fence around your yard? I bet you can take a wild quess why. I believe it had something to do with certain individuals who live on your block.

Stop making this whole incident into a FENCE issue. Or maybe the fence issue might be your fault. If you live behind the dog owner there may be a possibility that YOUR fence is not within certain property lines and that caused a gap??? Better check your Plat.

Also the person who said they "witnessed" the whole thing had to be 6'8" in order to see over a privacey fence.

Again defend the white trash. Based upon your writing skills, You must come from the same bolt of cloth!!!

Just my two cents, but as a dog owner, you have a responsibility to look out for the welfare of a kid your dog mauled, whether or not he was in your backyard. Right. The kid had no business going in the backyard, but once the kid was "mauled" as it has been stated, the owner of the dog still has an obligation to look after the welfare of the kid. The mother has every right to be livid at the treatment of her child by the dog owner. There's a way to approach it, the right way and the wrong way, but in my OPINION, the dog owner's reaction was nothing short of appalling.

Anonymous said...

Would someone please get a dictionary and define to the person who indicated that the child was "mauled by a dog". The child was trespassing on a dog owners property and was BITTEN ON THE BACK OF THE LEG. END OF STORY!!! The dog weighs about 6 pounds and stands about 1/2 a foot tall.

Please stop listening to these nut cases who say he was mauled.

Also, the property owner acted in a very professional manner and did everything possible to help this child.

I was a first hand witness to the entire incident from beginning.

There was no one else around until after it happened.

I think there is a problem of communication between heresay and the actual truth.

This is a trespassing issue. The child and parent are in the wrong! The dog was protecting his property. Stop putting the blame on dog owners.

The parent and child have NO "Legal Recourse" if that is what they are after.

Bad judgement on the kid and the dog owners part, can we neighbors work through it, and STOP posting anonymously on a site. 2 or 4 (if they are couples) need to sit down and work this out. N

Anonymous said...

Bitten multiple times - I think I would define that as an "attack" or "mauling," not a simple "dog bite."

FYI - once a dog bites - they WILL bite again! They are animals.

Call any shelter - they will tell you to put them down.

In response to June 24, 2009 4:16 PM you are a flat out liar. If you are not one of the five kids in the yard or the dog owner then you must have seen it out your window (Anonymously) because you weren’t there five minutes after the “incident” OR are you invisible?? Bitten on both legs no less then seven times, needing multiple stitches and crutches no weight bearing for 2 weeks. Yeah I’d say that was a kid just getting bitten on the back of the leg. Tomato, Tomahto. Pull your head out of your butt. The big surprise here is not that a kid trespassed, and I think everybody for the most part agrees he should not have. THE BIG SURPRISE IS THAT A DOG THAT SMALL COULD DO SO MUCH DAMAGE! Shame on you for being such a liar, anonymously on a very upstanding blog where only the truth is said and read and shame on me for even stooping to your level in response.

I am sorry I should made clear before the dog that did get out of the yard was not the same dog my mistake. In response to June 24, 2009 2:24 PM Grammer is spelled grammar. Maybe we could go back to school together. I also found my errors so kind of you to point them out. I don’t need to check my plat I did when I ordered my survey it was just fine. Thanks for your kind advice about not making it into a fence issue. Any more fence issues I have I will discuss with my neighbors in a neighborly way. Not via blogger 60655. If you had read what I wrote you would see I said I saw the aftermath not whole thing. I think you have made perfectly clear who the white trash in the neighborhood is oh wait no you didn‘t because I can‘t be sure who you are. I have a good idea though. Thanks again for your thoughts anonymous

This is really a sad situation. I'm sure the owner & parent's don't need or want this drama over a blog. I don't even understand why it was even started. I can see both sides of the story and I am a parent not a dog owner. But bottom line, the owner of the dog has a fenced in yard, what else do dog owners need? It is very unfortunate that this child was hurt. We do live in a neighborhood and we all should be able to get along. All in all hopefully we learned a lesson. Talk to your neighbors. If they don't mind if your kid goes in their yard to retrieve a ball, then that is great. But if your neighbor has an animal that is behind a fence (probably for a reason) then PLEASE talk to your kids and explain to them to Not go in that yard. COMMUNICATION is the key, with your children and your neighbors. No one is at fault, this was an accident.

My gripe is one that I have heard before. I am a PO who lives on 2211's beat. Bt. 2211, it seems is always detailed to something on the east end of the beat. There was a bt. 2211A to hadle the west end, but I have not seen it up in a long time. I know for a fact if an in-progress call comes in on the west end of Bt. 2211, it takes forever for a car to get to the call, if any are available. During the school year half the district cars are down watching the high schools at dismissal. Every day during this time there are no cars to handle the calls. I would think Alderman Rugai would do something about this. I know she has to be aware of the problem. I do not want to hear to attend the CAPS meeting to address this. I might as well be talking to a wall. Being the 19th ward is made up of a majority of city workers and other citizens who pay a heck of alot in taxes every year, it seems the Alderman should be doing more to address this problem. Other Alderman are up in arms regarding the shortage of police and the major increase in crime, but I never hear a peep from Alderman Rugai regarding these problems. At election time, I see my Precinct Captain promising to bring all the problems to the Alderman's attention, but as usual nothing is done. The only time I get a city service is by calling 311. This after calling the Alderman's office numerous times. Alderman Rugai, why for once show you actually care for the voters and citizens. Do something about the lack of police presence, not just in Mt. Greenwood and Beverly, but in the whole 22nd district. If you represent us, why is nothing ever done.

June 21, 5:15pm...The POLICE chip in every day. The reason the city DOES NOT and WILL NOT aske the rank and file to give up unpaid days is the police department by it's own numbers is 500 sworn officers below it's budgeted allotment and the real numbers are more over a thousand! With all the violence in this city, over 60 people shot last weekend, do you really want police officers to "PITCH IN"? I think NOT!!!!!

To the neighbor who happened to witness the incident, at what ever time you happened to get there. Why would you even thing of asking the dog's owner for any kind of papers regarding this dog? IT'S NOT YOUR BUSINESS!! O course the dog's owner would be emotional.
A child was injured!! If you were asking to owner to produce papers on the animal while the child was on scene, you should be FLOGGED! The parents of the child have no right to be asking the dog's owner for any papers either. THAT'S THE POLICE OFFICER'S JOB!! The police conduct the investigation and relay the information gathered to the hospital and the parents. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously!!! All of the adults regarding this dog bite incident need to realize, that the child was just getting a ball that was in a neighbor's yard, yes he should not have been in there, but the fact of the matter is that at the time he did not see any harm in it..... Unfortunately, it must have seemed quicker just to jump the fence and get the Ball. It's not like he went into this yard to deface or do any sort of damage! Just to get a BALL that was hit accidentally into a neighbors yard. An in and out sort of thing, just so that they can continue doing what children do....PLAY! Grow up!!! I know this child personally and he is not a trouble maker, he is just a typical boy that just went to retrieve a BALL! I know that if he was aware that the dog was out, he would have not entered the yard. He meant no harm, I am sure of it! As a dog owner myself, I do not trust my animal with any child, because animals never tell you what they are going to do or how they are feeling. FYI, this boy and his family are far from white trash. All of you "so called adults" bashing each other should check your maturity levels! What kind of examples are you setting for any child??? How about acting adult and STOP blogging and start doing something that will be effective, like GROWING UP!
