Poll
New poll will be to see what the majority of 60655 does for employment, we are living in the City/County for a reason and in a neighborhood that is known for city and county workers.
*I know that there are those (like me) who do not work for the city or county and for obvious reasons I cannot list every profession out there, so we going to be voting under the "other" tab. HOWEVER, this poll will include multiple choices for those who are married to city or county workers.*

Digital TV Delay
House Republicans managed Wednesday to defeat the so-called "DTV delay" bill—and that means that the planned Feb. 17 date for the digital TV transition is still on, barring any last-minute maneuvering by Democrats and the Obama administration.
**********************************
FROM THE SOUTHTOWN:
People who have not gotten their TV sets ready for the changeover to digital signals could earn a four-month reprieve under a bill making its way through Congress.
The Senate voted Monday to delay until June 12 the deadline for the changeover from analog to digital television broadcasting. People still getting their pictures through old-fashioned antennas otherwise would face a cutoff Feb. 17.
Comparable legislation is being readied in the House, and the Obama administration has called for a delay amid mounting concerns that too many Americans who rely on over-the-air broadcast signals won't be ready.
It's estimated that more than 6.5 million U.S. households are still not prepared for the upcoming transition.

Bucks for Barb
In January 2008, Barbara Szykowny, was diagnosed with small cell Cancer, which was sited in her lung. Later, she would find that the cancer spread to her liver, parts of her spine, and hips.
Barbara has been enduring chemotherapy and radiation for the last several months and continues to undergo these treatments today. Aside, from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she continues to undergo testing on a regular basis to monitor her cancer. These tests include, bone scans, MRI’s, blood tests and doctor visits. These treatments, tests and visits are costly and insurance doesn’t cover much.
Family and friends have rallied together to form a benefit called “BUCKS FOR BARB” to help Barbara cover the astronomical medical bills during the course of Barbara’s heroic journey with cancer. Although, Barbara will never be cured from this type of cancer, this is a battle she will continue to fight everyday for the rest of her life.
Barbara (Colby/Sparr) is married to David Szykowny. Barbara is the mother of four loving children and the grandmother of eight. She lives in Mt. Greenwood, Illinois with her family. To help alleviate worrisome medical expenses, a benefit is being held.

Walgreens revisited
From City of Chicago website - October 2008
Mayor Richard M. Daley introduced a plan to City Council today to redevelop the northwest corner of 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue, the center of the Mount Greenwood neighborhood business district, into a new two-acre shopping plaza. "Encouraging private investment in our communities is a key component of our redevelopment efforts," said Mayor Daley. "This project brings with it jobs, new retail opportunities and beautification efforts, all of which will benefit the community and its residents."
The $10.9 million project will redevelop the site with a new retail center, anchored by an 18,000-square-foot Walgreen's store, a 70-space landscaped parking lot and a 3,700-square-foot corner landscaped plaza with benches and signage that will identify the Mount Greenwood community.
The City will assist the development by contributing a 13,000-square-foot surface parking lot in the middle of the site and $1.5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) assistance.
New Poll
From what I hear, Walgreens will be rebuilt, but in the same location as it is now. There has been some kind of fight regarding sewers having to be rebuilt. I don't know if we are getting the pretty little strip mall with the park (like in the pictures). Starbucks is a distant memory. Fingers crossed for Dunkin Donuts. Saw on another blog in the area that Beverly is getting a Fat Burger (franchise)...supposedly partially owned by Kanye West. How come it takes years to get anything built or opened over here, but in a snap of the fingers there is something opening in Beverly. (I am currently shaking my head as I type this). I vote for a potbelly or chipotle.
Corner of 111th and Kedzie looks like crap. The building on 111th and Pulaski either needs to be cleaned up and repainted or torn down...looks like crap.
Anyway, enough of my opinions, new poll is "what are you going to do with your tax return" (if you get one).

Stay Warm!
Stay warm as it will be getting FRIGID! Keep an eye on our home bound neighbors. Keep taps dripping to keep your pipes from freezing. Make sure you don't leave the animals out too long. It's been a long time since we have seen temperatures this low. Now, if I can get my teenager to wear more than a hoodie, I will be in good shape.

What a great neighborhood.
Child Lure Incident
such as -
Child Lure Incident on 105th & Troy, on Weds. 1/7, a 7 year old female was approached by 3 males driving a silver car, asking how old she was, where was her mother, etc. They drove North on Troy. The child reported the incident to an adult who called the police.
On Jan 7 2009 at approximately 6:00pm. A silver car with 3 male blacks stopped their car at 105th and Troy and asked a 7year old girl strange questions such as where is your mother? etc and then fled the scene. This was reported to the police and a citywide fax was sent out in the police dept. messaging system.
The post about the 3/m/1's stopping and asking questions of a f/2/7 is true. I also saw the fax message come out. The questions were indeed strange. It was listed as an attempt child luring. The info was given by the family I would guess but no one is in custody. They asked other q's besides where is your mother which were a bit odd. The story is true though and can be verified if necessary through the 022nd District. Please be aware these types are roaming the neighborhood.

Best of Polls - Just for Fun
The schools' poll is dedicated basically to the grammar and high schools in the immediate area where 60655ers would attend. Clissold and Sutherland are technically in 60643, but there are tons of 60655ers that go there, same with McAuley and Rice. Rita, Mt. Carmel, etc. are great schools with lots of neighborhood kids, but not in the immediate area. Hope that's clear, I don't want to be raked over the coals on this one... (sorry for not listing Barbara Vick, but see above about grammar and high school - sorry about no MPA listed, and it's too late to add it now as the first vote has been cast, I am sure it is a very good school)
YOU CAN MAKE MULTIPLE CHOICES ON THIS ONE FOR THOSE FAMILIES OUT THERE THAT HAVE KIDS AT DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.

Police News Affairs Director Monique Bond confirmed the man was an off-duty Chicago police sergeant.
The nature of the injuries and how they were obtained were not immediately known, police said.

Reward Offered for Merrionette Park Robbery Suspect
From the SOUTHTOWN STAR
Reward offered for Merrionette Park robbery suspect
December 31, 2008
BY WILLIAM LEE, Staff Writer
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of a career criminal wanted for robbing an elderly woman in October in Merrionette Park.
Authorities on Tuesday announced the reward being offered by Cook County Crimestoppers for the arrest of Juan E. Landa, 46, of Calumet City, who with an accomplice attacked the 70-year-old woman near 115th Street and Kedzie Avenue on Oct. 25.
Police said one of the men grabbed the woman by the throat from behind and threw her to the ground. She suffered two broken vertebrae in her neck and a broken ring finger when one of the men violently tried to remove her wedding ring, according to police.
The woman remains traumatized by the event, Merrionette Park police Sgt. Anthony Ferenzi said.
Landa's alleged accomplice, Charles Hughes, 52, of Harvey, is charged with felony robbery and aggravated battery on Dec. 7 and is being held on $300,000 bail.
Landa has a 21-year criminal history of both violent and non-violent offenses, according to court records. Authorities believe that he might be in Harvey, where he has family, or Dixmoor and warn that he should be considered dangerous.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Merrionette Park police at 708-396-3170. Tips can be anonymous.
Hopefully as these men are "career" criminals, they will go away for a long time.
