Calling non 60655 natives - Where are you from?

What about an entry on where people were from before Mt. Greenwood. I guess, in Chicago, that means what parish. People could reminisce about St. Sabina's, St. Kilian's, St. Ethelreda's, Little Flower, etc.

Of course, I know a lot of people around here are from St. Gab's, Visitation, St. Tommy More, St. Bede, and so many more. Where are you from and what are your memories?

Me personally, I grew up in Bridgeport, St. Bridget's parish, which is now gone, actually long, long gone. One of the prettiest churchs. I do miss the catherdal like churchs that are no longer built. I also spent many holy days of obligation visiting my grandmother in Marquette Park and going to St. Rita.

I was born, raised, and lived in St. Bede Parish for the first 36 years of my life. It was a great working class neighborhood and was predominately Irish, Polish, Italian and German. Every family had plenty of kids and people really stuck together.

There is an excellent book out called "Parish the Thought" that was written by St. Bede parishoner John Ruane about growing up Catholic in the 1960's.

He uses mostly ficticious names in his memoirs, but if you grew up in Bede's it's easy to figure out who's who. Good reading.

Little Flower

They had an upper and a lower church and Masses would go on at the same time in each. And that did not even include the 9:45 (9:30?) in the high school gym.

I think they had eight Masses a Sunday.

St. Kilian's was a lot like Little Flower. Predominantly Irish. Two churches (the new church and Memorial Hall, which was the original church). At 9:00 on Sunday, there were two Masses: one for adults in the new church, and one for school kids and their parents in Memorial Hall.

There were three school buildings with about eight classrooms apiece. Each classroom held a nun and about 50 kids. Tuition was six dollars a month for one kid and nine dollars a month for two or more. Some families had a kid in each grade.

Great memories, but everything changed in the late 60's.

I grew up in the Southwest Suburbs, however I always hung out in Queen of the Universe Parish, Nabisco smell rocks! The suburbs sucked in the 70"s and 80's. There was nothing but farm. I now live in Mt. Greenwood and love the city. It brings me back to my childhood and I love every minute of it and I love raising my kids with the warmth of the neighbors who we cannot live without!!!

This is such a beautiful neighborhood, with beautiful people who have been run out of their former neighborhoods by crime and work for the city and are not allowed to move out. Let's take a stand and fight crime or the same thing will happen again and then where do you go? report itPeople are so afraid of this "racist term", who cares what color the person is, if you see something wrong report it. Once the bad guys know they have free reign here it will only get worse. Put a stop to it now or prepare to move to the northside.
