Memories of 60655

Received this suggestion regarding a post:

I think it would be cool to have people leave comments about businesses or places that no longer exist in the neighborhood... i.e., Ray's pizza at 111th & Central park or Chicken Unlimited at 111th & whipple.

So 60655 natives, what are your memories?

Question of the day! What was the name of the pizza place at 111th & CP before it was Ray's?????

Also would like to throw out there Digidos (probably wrong spelling) that used to be across from the post office on Homan. Always good pizza.

Willy's Wayside Wagon at 111th and Drake

Candy Shack that used to be in building on 111th just east of Fat Tommy's, building is now torn down.

Reds I

Reds II

The original Eric the Red's when it was a resturant too with the slide from the second floor.

Soon to be a memory, The Salvation Army for basketball games, table tennis, bumer pool after school.

When the garage at St Christina fields was in the middle of the plot of land before buiding the new one.

Don's Foods

so many more......

Reds I & Reds II....

The best hot dogs...even better than Fat Johnny's.

Also the best shakes, thankfully Pop's has carried on that torch.

Prince castle ice-cream
Mt. Greenwood restaurant
Penny candy store
all around 103rd and Kedzie

Magic - 103rd and Pulaski...the site of CVS now.

Back when Bill was there, no finer corned beef breakfast in the city.

The new place by Saint Christina is not the same...

TRIANO's! Wasnt that the name of the pizza place? Used to love their cheese deep-dish. And who remembers bringing pop bottles back to Baynor's (113th Kedzie) for the return deposit money? Going up to Sawyer's store, (Hinkey Dink's) not the bar side, for milk and bread. Coming home from school and praying that Harry Miller's got a shipment and had stove or refrigerator boxes out back that we could use to make forts. Shopping at "the dime store" and at Ed Vree's. DiGuido's, or the 'Pizza House' had the best pizza ever!!

Trianos it is! Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

What was the name of the restaurant at corner of 111th and Kedzie, which is now the parking lot for Walgreen's. About 30 years ago or so one owner murdered the other owner.

For a short time there was a hot dog joint directly across the street from Burger King. It has been a home for many years.

Here's one. At he east end of the CVS lot on 103rd there was a Chinese restaurant. About 30 years ago it was a hot dog joint called, I think, O'Reilly's.

Reds couldn't compare to Fat Johnny's. Reds used Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs. Fat Johnny uses David Berg.

By the way, who remembers drinking in Harrigan's when the drinking age in Illinois was 19?

Anonymous said...

Harrigan's at 103rd & Springfield, (where Gilhooley's is currently) and Louise's Restaurant at 104th & Pulaski.

I think the name of the restaurant on 111th & Kedzie was 'The Golden Gate'.
Remember 'Steg's' on the corner of 107th & Trumbull? It was like Don's without the butcher's counter.
'Can you top this?' on 103rd & Kedzie for arcade games & ice cream.
'Pop's' used to be 'Winchell's Donuts'.
Returning pop bottles to 'Ed Vrees' grocery store on 110th & Kedzie.
Eating lunch at the counter at Woolworth's, 111th & Kedzie, then hopping in the photo booth by the door.
When 'Louise's Restaurant ' was on 104th & Kedzie next to Ace Hardware?
Monaco Drugs on 103rd & Kedzie.

Harrigans where your feet stuck to the beer soaked carpeting and there was always a chance to get asked to the prom.

Anonymous said...

I think Winchell's actually is where Popeye's is now. Pop's, and I can wrong, used to be called The Beef Hut, or something like that.

And wasn't there a candy store right next door (north) to the bicycle shop?

Remember when the realtor at 104th and kedzie was Jocko's?

Anonymous said...

That was called "The Sausage Hut". How about Kremms Bakery which then became McMahon's Bakery on 111th just east of Kedzie. They made those awesome "Atomic cakes" Yum! Herwiches clothes store on 111th. You can still see there painted sign on the side of the building if you look east down the alley on the south side of 111th st & kedzie.
Under age drinking at "Ye olde times" tavern 111th & Spaulding right next door to Creshendo music shop. That tavern burned down at least 25 years ago and the lot has never been used.

How about Dressels food store, it was like Don's and Steggs only bigger and with Pinball machines.
And check this out, Before Don bought the business at 107th and Homan, it was a place called John's, and they sold liquor out of there. At least they sold what wasn't stolen out of there. That same guy John has owned Freshline foods at 95th & 52nd ave. in Oak Lawn ever since he sold that business to Don.

I miss Willie's wayside wagon most of all. The place where it once stood is still there. Maybe Saint Xavier would lease that land to someone who would like to bring willie's back.

Garbage Granny was like Mt. Greenwoods mascot. I remember after she past away. They torn down her house (can't remember now if there was a fire there or not) but just about every kid in the neighborhood was up there looking for "riches".

Anonymous said...

How about Tu-Kynds Pizza at 103rd east of Pulaski in the A-Frame building ??

Anonymous said...

There use to be some neat little prairies around the neighborhood. My buddies and I would make underground forts and stuff. The one that was between St.Louis & Homan from 106th to 107th was great. We would spend all day in there man. They built homes there 106th to 107th & Trumbull.

Loved Willies Great dogs and place to hang out. Jeannies ice cream parlor on 111th near Kedzie. Martello's furniture store next door, Herwiches dress store and Homemaker store across the street. The Shadey Rest on St. Louis. Dressell's store with a wall of candy, Hilltop grocery store and the best bakery. Who remembers the Pepper Mill before it was Waltzing Matlida's?

Going south on Kedzie from 103rd Street, I remember:

SW corner of 103rd & Kedzie was Monaco Drug Store.

Louise's original location was just south of the Ace Hardware Store before moving to Pulaski.

Sinclair Brothers at 104th Kedzie was a CONOCO Gas Station.

Just south of Sinclair Brothers on the corner was a self-service dry cleaner shop. Named?

The Pediatricians Office on Kedzie that use to be Jockos was Trainor Glass Company before it was Jockos. What was it inbetween Jockos and the Doctors Office? Dunno. Not sure if it was anything.

Immediately north of the Schwinn Bicycle Shop was a Ma & Pa Grocery Store named ?

Going south on the west side of Kedzie was the PortHole Lounge that is currently a Century 21 Real Estate office.

On the westside of Kedzie a little bit north of the church was Boyer's Hair Salon.

On the westside of Kedzie of little bit north of 108th Street was Flashback Cleaners.

On the southwest corner of 109th Kedzie was a barber shop, then a Century 21 office, then the current dentist office. Before being a barber shop?

The Jewel Grocery Store located on the land that is currently the south parking lot of Burger King.

Ed Vree's Grocery Store use to be on 111th Street, but moved to where the Dollar Store is now.

Mt. Greenwood Record Shop was on the west side of Kedzie across the street from Wonder Burgers current location and right next to the alley entrance.

Wonder Burger was on the west side of Kedzie on the other side of the alley entrance from Mt. Greenwood Record Store and in the back 1/5th of the building that housed the restaurant which was on the land that is now the parking lot for Walgreens.

Woolworth's was on the land that is the parking lot on the north east corner of 111th Kedzie.

Next to Woolworths was the Card and Candle which is now the school uniform store. The uniform store used the same sign out front, just changed the name panels.

The Florist Shop next to the Card and Candle was Ray's Jewelry Store.

Enough for now.

Before it was "the pepper mill" that tavern was called the "crazy horse", and like the "pepper mill" There would be fights spilling into the street a few times a night.

How about "Fat city" right next door to the Fire house on 111th street.

"Anns" store 107th & Albany was like "Steggs" and "Don's" but a bit smaller.

"Perfect pitch" auto repair 108th & Kedzie was "Pompers Phillips 66 Gas station".

The Rehabbed Building at 111th & Drake (Saint Xavier occupies it now) Was a bar called "Spanky's", and "Willies wayside wagon" was on that lot.

"Neumans" drug store was at 111th & St.louis where "Taco Joe" is now. They had this little red AMC Gremlin that they would deliver prescriptions in.

Anybody remember "Playland" on the southwest corner of 95th & Pulaski. It was on the property where K-mart (Formally "Venture") and "Chuckie Cheese" is now. It was a tiny amusement park like "Kiddieland" in Maywood and Dundee.

"Mr. Hotdog" and the Fruit stand at 111th & Homan where Boz's is now.

At 107th Homan, before Don its was John's, and before John (60's) it was Pete's (50's-60's).

McNally's was Eric the Red, but before Eric the Red it was an auto body shop, named? Cannot remember.

There was another Mom and Pop store on the northwest corner of 108th or 109th on Albany or Whipple that faced east and it had gray siding. It had a double staircase outside. You could walk up the stairs to the front door from the north end or the south end. The staircases had metal pipe railings. Does anyone remember the name of the store?

There was a garden center on the southeast corner of 111th & Central Park. Cannot remember the name.

I think the store on 107th & Albany was Gert's.

I miss the potholes and having no curbs and the gigantic mud puddles that wouldn't dry up for two weeks. The electricity that would go out when the guy next door farted. But really the thing that's missing most of all are thousands of Elm trees that died in the 7o's. There's only one or to really good old shade trees left in the neighborhood. and most of what is being planted these day's will not grow much taller than 35 feet or so. "PLANT SOME SHADE TREES!.

Al's Sugar Shack, actually had 3 locations, 111th & Homan, 105th & kedzie, & across from Hinky Dinks. Buying Lisa Frank unicorn stickers at Dodge Drugs. Eating fries at Woolworth's food counter after buying a parakeet. Fernando's steak tortas at 2 a.m. Horse meat or not, they were great! Working at South Side Video & having to call neighbors to return their late adult movies! And I miss all the weeping willow trees whose roots broke water pipes.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely, Fernando's was excellent!
There used to be clouds of smoke floating across 111th st. after the bars let out. Half the time I would wake up on the floor , leaning against the couch with what was left of my "loaded" steak burrito in my hand. The good old day's.
