Thieves Posing as Snow Shovelers

This is from WBBM.com; not quite 60655, but close enough.

There is a potential crime spree in the Morgan Park-Beverly neighborhood -- thieves posing as snow shovelers, robbing houses of Christmas gifts and personal belongings.

It happened to at least one family in that neighborhood, and they want to warn others. CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports.

From the outside, the Strand family home looks like something out of a Christmas card. But Wednesday, in an hour's time and in broad daylight, burglars broke in and put a damper on the family's holiday celebration.

"They went through every room, overturned every drawer, broke things to get change, tore clothes and personal papers ... and were able to get away with quite a lot," said burglary victim Kathleen Strand.

Snapshots tell the story: Closets rifled. Clothes destroyed. Drawers emptied. Worst of all, the burglars made off with nearly all the family's Christmas presents.

"Just the night before, my sister and mom had wrapped a ton of presents and, as is our tradition, we put them under the tree and set them up -- and they took them all," Strand said.

Only three wrapped gifts remain, left by burglars on the on the doorstep in their apparent haste to get away.

Strand said the thieves entered through a basement door and adds there has been a rash of break-ins the past few weeks in their Beverly neighborhood.

"There's a lot of anxiety out there," she said. "We're just hearing more and more stories about crime increasing, but with the economy ... everybody's struggling and desperate, and certainly that's why we're seeing more of these kinds of robberies."

Ironically, the family's loss has helped them focus on what's most important this holiday season.

"We're all alive and we have a roof over our house, and we're grateful for that," Strand said.

The Strands say they saw a couple of strangers in the neighborhood posing as door-to-door snow shovelers. Neighbors think those folks had been watching the home and knew nobody was there. There's a warning for everyone in the neighborhood to be alert.

Of course there's no descriptions, that would be racist, unless they were White!

Every time I see a silver back around my house I CALL!! They do not belong here. I would love to see the penny saver and these flyer guys stop. They are casing our houses. I saw it happen in evergreen and they arrested the guy.

Thats the problem around here, No one calls! At least if you call it will bring beats 2211 & 2212 back to the west end because they have to respond to the call. If you dont they will stay on the east end of the district all night and day.

If you see Pookie at your door and he's not in a postal uniform call the police. Probably not a good idea to let him in either.

Call the 22nd District and ask the Commander to require the beat officers to feel out contact cards on all of the people they see in the area carrying shovels. If they see we are paying attention, I am sure they will get out of our community.Call the police and give them a description every single time you see someone like that. Just say it is a suspicious person!

I called the police last week at 200 pm to write a ticket to a vehicle illegally parked facing the wrong way and in violation of permit parking (8am - 4pm)on 103rd lawndale. They never showed up at all. I even called back twice without ever seeing a squad drive by. I guess they wont respond for anything over here. Seems the only arrests made in Mt. Greenwood are when an off duty police officer who lives in the neighborhood takes action.

Last week my son was out snowplowing. He saw two people pretending to be shoveling and a third waiting in a car near 107th and Fairfield. He called 911 and surprisingly they didn't give him a hard time about why they were "suspicious". He gave them a description of the car and the license place (temporary of course). The police arrived quickly and pulled them over on Washtenaw. I don't know what happened after that though.

I will answer the question of why there are no calls. If you call 911, like I have, and give a description of an african american male acting suspiciously they hang up. I had to call three times and ask fof a supervisor. The answer was maybe one of my neighbors isn't as racist as me and has a black friend. That's why we can't get the police. There is an ongoing investagation into racial profiling in this neighborhood because of the amount of contact cards to blacks. Look it up. Some white cops have come into contact by IAD for this practice. I don't feel the city has our safety in its primary concern.
