Congratulations!

Congratulations to these two young women from in and around 60655.

The Illinois Alliance of Art Education and the Illinois State Board of Education have selected the artwork of Mother McAuley High School senior Nikki Annes, of Chicago's Beverly community, to be the 2009 Illinois Arts Education Week poster.

This is the second year in a row that a student from McAuley has won the state board's poster contest.

The theme of this year's contest was "Envisioning Our Future" through the arts. The contest, sponsored in cooperation with the governor's office, brought in nearly 150 entries.

Senior Lauren Martinkus, of Chicago's Mount Greenwood community, also had her artwork selected for an honorable mention award.

Both Annes and Martinkus are students in Kathy Gordon Davis' AP Studio Art class at the school.

The printed posters will be sent to all Illinois public and private schools to display during Illinois Arts Education Week.

The winning artwork also will be on display at board headquarters in Springfield and at the awards ceremony in Rock Island.
